[slim] Re: Brand New Squeezebox v3 switching off after 30 seconds
Hi Peter, that's exactly the problem I had :-) Due to the fact that the display was lit when selecting the song, I didn't even think about the brightness ... all seems to be working fine so far and I'm very happy with my purchase. If now I would know a bit about the life expectancy of the display I could decide whether to leave a screensaver (clock) switch on when the SB is off or better just have it on when really using it. Anyway ... thanks for your reply. The display is Vaccuum Flourescent, based on modules from Noritake. This technology is known to suffer from burn-in, but the lifetime is very long (long enough that I don't believe they even quote MTBF in the official specs). The original Slim Devices product, SliMP3 has been in the field for years (5 I think?) using a Noritake Character display of the same technology. Unit #1 is still running nicely. There was a recent case brought up in the forum a while ago seemingly showing faded pixels. The user was directed to slim devices support, and I'm not sure what happened from there. Slimserver automatically scrolls long lines, and typical browsing should give you a long life. It should not be necessary to have to worry about turning the display down to zero. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Since then, I've decided to work on phasing Ogg out of my library. Ogg is impressive and sounds much better to me than MP3 at any given bitrate, but nothing lossy is ever going to beat something lossless for sound quality. Storage is cheap and only getting cheaper. For those reasons, I'm transitioning to FLAC (and I hope ripping all my stuff for the last damned time). I think that SD saw these trends as well, which is why I think they went for native FLAC support and have native Ogg support way down on the priority list. I love Ogg as much as the next slashdot reading geek, but I fear that its chances for mass acceptance may have passed. While I almost 100% agree with you here, I think mobile devices will still depend on lossy formats for at least another couple of years until storage is large (in capacity), small (in size), and inexpensive. I also really like the ogg format. For my iriver, I use ogg with Rockbox and the format can almost not be beat. My library at home for the slimserver is APE, but I'd like to convert to FLAC for foward/rewind capabilities except FLAC is roughly 5%-10% less efficient. I doubt I'll ever see native APE format. I think the final days for lossy formats are numbered, but there still is viability for the near term. Also, when online retailers start offering lossless audio content, the days of CDs will be over too. -- verbatone verbatone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3556 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18357 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

In fact, the solution suggested only works if there's only one listener. In a mass audience situation, you have to maintain directional coherence and make the entire air mass move as one. [slim] SlimDevices Squeezebox 2/3 and Sonos ZP80
Over the past couple of days, I have had a chance to test the Sonos ZP80 (the model with the digital outputs and minus the amplifier) alongside my trusty SB2 which I have been using for close to a year now. I thought my experience would be of interest to both SqueezeBox and Sonos users / prospective users, so I am placing it on both forums. Right off the bat, I would like to say that both products are excellent and very well thought out. It is hard to go wrong with either of them. A] Ease of setup: If you are using a Windows PC or a Mac to store your music files, the setup process is fairly simple with both systems. For users who are unfamiliar with firewall settings and the likes, the Sonos installer actually walks you through the process, so it is a little easier. The Sonos hardware, which uses its own secure p2p mesh network, installs itself simply by following instructions to press 2 buttons on the box when asked. For the SqueezeBox, which in wireless mode uses your existing network, you have to manually enter information like SSID, WPA or WEP information, etc. If you are running Linux or some other flavour of UNIX, then setup is simpler with Slimserver (there is currently no Linux Setup software for Sonos, but there are workarounds, and also you only need the setup software once to point the Sonos system to the music so you might be able to borrow someones laptop for that). The preferred mode of use for me, however, is to have all my music stored on a standalone NAS; this is where the Sonos, with its ability to directly access SMB shares, shines. Of course, it is possible to hack your NAS to run Slimserver, like I have done with my Buffalo Linkstation. While it works wonderfully for me, I dont think my grandparents or parents could have or would have had the patience to do the same. Where the Sonos falls short for me is that it requires at least one zone player to be directly connected via Ethernet, unlike the SqueezeBoxen, that can directly utilize your existing Wi-Fi setup. This defeats the purpose of storing the relatively noisy NAS far away from the stereo. However, this will not be a problem for someone who has an Ethernet wired home, or who can afford to buy another zone player simply for this purpose perhaps Sonos should offer a zone bridge for significantly cheaper than their Zone Players. Another option is to use a wireless bridge for testing purposes I am actually using the SB2 as a wireless bridge. However this mode of use is unsupported by Sonos, and I have noticed several dropouts in audio in this mode. Overall in terms of ease of setup, I would give the Sonos the advantage. B] Audio quality: This is the area that was most important to me. While my stereo may not be considered audiophile, my Cyrus 8 integrated amp + PSX-R power supply with Dynaudio Audience 52SEs are no slouches either. In other threads I have talked about how the SB2, when paired with the Cyrus DAC-X DA converter, is barely distinguishable from my Cyrus CD8 + PSR-X power supply paired with the same DAC. What pleasantly surprised me was the quality of the Sonos machine both through the digital outputs as well as the analogue outputs. The SB2 running through the DAC-X provides clean open sound with punchy bass and wonderful stereo imaging. The ZP80 through the same DAC is very close, if not as quite good I cant really put my finger on what is different though, I think it depends on the music you are listening to, for some pieces there is a clear difference on others there isnt. I have not done sufficient testing with the analogue outputs, but my initial impressions were that the sound was a little muddier and less defined on the analogue outputs of the ZP80, but still excellent. A lot has been talked about the internal DACs on the SB2, but those on the ZP80 arent terrible either. FWIW, I am using a linear PSU with my SB2 a piece that I fortuitously found lying unused at work. Also all the music files are EAC+AccurateRip extracted FLACs. If I had to rate the audio quality of my components from good to better, it would go in this order: 1) ZP80 analogue 2) SB2 analogue 3) ZP80 with Cyrus DAC-X 4) SB2 with Cyrus DAC-X 5) Cyrus CD8 6) Cyrus CD8 + DAC-X Advantage, SqueezeBox, but only just. C] Remote control: A lot has been talked about the superiority of the Sonos handheld controller over the SqueezeBox remote. I have to confess that I actually like the SqueezeBox remote a lot. I think the keys are well laid out, and as long as I can easily see the nice VFD screen on the SB2, I dont need to have a display on the remote. This works well for me in my bedroom, but I can see the need for more information on the controller if you are in a larger space or at a greater distance from the device. In that case the Sonos controller would win hands down. I would like to point out that, as elegant as this controller is, it still lacks the high quality feel of a new iPod, and the wheel could do with

Is there something I need to do specifically with JMF or do I just need to have it installed on my machine? [slim] Mac Slimserver more resource hungry than Windows?
My Win 2000 server died the other day. I COULD fix it, but I have been looking for an excuse to move to a Mac Mini (Intel, dual core) for my server, so this seemed like a good time to do that. So, to test things out, I installed Slimserver on my Powerbook (1.25 GHz G4, 1.5 Gb). I had been using 6.5 on Windows, so I went with that for the Mac. Under Windows (2 GHz Athlon, 512 Meg), I wasn't having any real problems with dropouts. On my Powerbook, I have been having constant dropouts. Since both servers were wired, wireless reception should be identical. It will play a track or so, then it will just play a fraction of a second and then freeze for 10-30 secodns, then play another fraction, etc. During this time, response to the remote control is glacial, at best. (Oddly enough, even after power off, it continues to play for another stutter or two.) So, this brings up a few questions: 1) Is this NORMAL on a Mac? If not (hopefully), does anyone have any ideas what is going on here? Further system details: Streaming from 4/29 nightly of 6.5 (also tried 6/22, I think) to one SB2 and one SB3. Same problems on each. Internet radio works fine, but streaming AIFF (like WAV) files has the problem. OS X 10.4.6. The activity monitor shows perl pegged between 50-80% pretty consistently with NOTHING being streamed. It appears to have finished rescanning my library (6000 traks on external Firewire drive, though same problems with network monted Terastation), so I have no idea what it is doing; there isn't even any web server access. If I have other resource hungry apps running, the stuttering just fades away into no sound at all. I don't see anything unusual in the log. 2) How do you downgrade to an earlier version on the Mac? I tried just deleting the prefpane (in /Library), but when I tried installing an earlier 6.3, the server would never start. When I replaced that with the 6.5 install, it at least started again. I imagine there must be something else I have to delete, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about the Mac Slimserver to know what. 3) So, are the new Intel Mac Minis (with lots of memory) going to be signficantly more capable than my Powerbook for this? I would like to be able to use it as both a server and my desktop machine (web, email, Dreamweaver, no fancy graphics) without things bogging down. Any help/suggestions/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks. -- mmcguff mmcguff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5278 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23492 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I don't know the cause of your main problem, if it's not scanning your music files. But could do no harm to be sure your Web browser is not looking at the Squeezebox page. As regards downgrading, I think there is a difference in the database file. Im addition to deleting the preference pane, you should probably delete the SlimServer preferences (this may not be needed) in the Preferences section of your Library at com.slimdevices.slim.plist. and the database at silimserversql.db in the SlimServer section of the Caches. -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23492 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] How much longer for a really slim SlimServer?
Slim Devices has been absolutely brilliant with the ultimate Slim client (Squeezebox), I'm wondering how much longer until somebody turns their attention to a truly slim SlimServer appliance. The QNAP thingy is close, but they still sell you the storage, and don't provide an open-source interface. The NSLU2/Kurobox set-up is slightly underpowered and _way_ too hacker-centric. What I'm thinking is, the 'home PC' as we know it today won't be here in 5 (3?) years; everything will be an 'appliance'*.Your TB of tunes will not likely be stuck on a mechanical go-round thing either. So, is there some technical limitation I don't understand that is preventing somebody from putting together a 'slim device' with an HTTP interface (like a router), with a UI that allows for upgrading of the code/plugins, etc just like we do now? Storage would easily interface via USB (or whatever comes next). So I guess the questions are: a) can it be done? and b) how much longer until it is? Nick *handheld email/internet, game console, etc. The PC will truly become nothing more than 'office equipment', and how many people _really_ have a home office? ps Hey it is Slim Device_s_ Inc. - they really should have more than one! -- nicketynick Wireless SB3, Denon DRA-F101, Mission M31 loudspeakers WinXP SP2 Slimserver, SMC WBR14g router nicketynick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1511 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23496 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Good point! But for a company that has already invested a tidy sum in creating a market, it seems like a rather natural extension, doesn't it? I noticed that Sonos is now available at Future Shop - can you imagine all the folks who will drop the cash without really knowing what they're buying, or what the alternatives might be? I just think that our favourite company is soon going to have a deep enough market penetration (I know that everybody who sees my SB says wow, I didn't know you could do that - cool!) that folks will be clamouring for new hardware from them - I just thought I'd be among the first to suggest that a 'slim' server would be ideal. Interesting points, as a first stage perhaps the community could specify the hardware for a server - chip, motherboard, hard disks, leave the case up to the builder and prepare a LINUX distribution that would install as a Slim SlimServer without the builder having to know a thing about LINUX. Is this being too simple ? Or could a low end Dell server be chosen and a LINUX distribution built? Or could the LINUX build handle a wide range of hardware?
