Using 6.2.2 and F/W 48 my SB3 constantly seems to drop off, the music stops and the display goes blank. When I try to wake it up it says "waking up slimserver" but often doesnt connect. Sometimes if I ping the SB3 from the slimserver it all wakes up and works again at the first ping, but often not. I just have to wait. Very frustrating. I never had this problem before upgrading from 6.2.1, the first version I used. My gut feeling it is not the SB but slimserver. Often when I shutdown my PC I get an "application error - slim.exe" which I have to acknowledge before windows will shut down. Can anyone help? Unfortunately, getting information out of the open source crowd is usually like pulling teeth. The same thing is true on a Do It Yourself speaker building forum that I post on. They have their know-how and don't like to share it. I agree that the product needs to "just work" in order to go big time. My Slim Server is working well right now so I doubt I will upgrade any time soon unless I read that they have all the bugs out or there is a new feature that I just can't pass up. I have learned that when there are "upgrades" on software packages I always read what the fixes are before I run the patch. If I'm not having the problems that are supposed to be fixed and I don't think I'll use the new feature I won't run the newer version. You just have to resist the urge to over-tweak. On a slightly related topic: The Dell server that I use to run Slimserver has never kept time well. (Bad battery on motherboard? I don't know for sure). I found that it slipped out of sync quite often. By default, Windows XP only syncs with an Internet time server once a week. But by the time a week went by, my server would be off by a few minutes. Anyway, I found an article that tells you how to modify Windows to sync as often as you like. I now sync a few times a day and my time is very accurate now. The product is marvelous, the hardware beautiful, the solution it provides better than any other product (especially @ the price point) that I can find. I struggle with the fact, 'though, that it needs to be an *appliance* that just works, and not something that I spend lots of time mucking around with server settings, rescanning my library, wondering why my playlists disappeared, scratching my head over duplicate album entries, puzzling over why when my Slimserver shuts down, my Squeeze won't automatically reconnect when I start up my computer again. [slim] Power supply
Hi Guys: This will be my first post on the Slim Devices forum so please bear with me if you don't understand what I'm trying to tell you. I have been reading many posts on audiocircle about linear power supplies for the SB3's and the earlier models. Everybody seems to think that is the way to go. I am not going to spend big bucks on a power supply! Call me cheap or whatever you want but that's the way I am. Big bucks doesn't mean better performance. I had read about the Elpac power supply for the SB3 and it being less than $50 I thought I'd give it a shot. The first one I got was apparantly defective. It worked okay for a week or so and then went bonkers.Back to the stock p.s. and no problems. Wayne of the bolder cable co. sent me email asking if I Would sell it to him. Okay with me. When he got it and checked it out he found a crack or something. Repaired it and did mods to it and was very satisfied with the results. So I bought another Elpac p.s. I listened to it for two weeks and I really couldn't hear a significant difference between it and the stock p.s. Knowing that Wayne of Bolder cable co. has a very good reputation on audiocircle I sent him my new Elpac for mods the other day. In the mean time my very good friend and computer nerd rashiki lent me his own designed p.s. while he is on vacation. He'll be back July 5th. I'm not giving it back to him!!! His power supply has taken my SB3 to a whole new level of performance. Damn near jaw dropping!!! The darn thing is a killer!! I just can't say enough how much more it has made my SB3 perform. Congrats to rashiki! He has a winner on his hands! Cheers to all my fellow Sb3 owners. Every once in a while the SB3 will "forget" its MAC address. It'll be listed in Player Information as "ff:ff:ff:ff:00" or something. Setting it to the MAC address listed on the bottom of the unit fixes this. However that would only impact routers that are set to filter out unauthorized clients by MAC address. [slim] Re: Anyone here know anything about ad hoc wifi networks?
Well, don't bang your head against the desk! Let's start with the easy stuff: You're connected from a Windows PC to an SB3 using an adhoc wireless network, is that correct? On the PC, you can tell what the IP address of the various by opening up a command prompt, and typing "ipconfig". If you have multiple network adapters (like the wireless and perhaps a connection to a high speed internet service) you may need to do a bit of detective work to figure out which IP is which. Or just tell us both and we'll try to guess. On the Squeezebox, you can scroll to the "Current Settings" menu. Under that option, the third line down is the last IP address that was successfully assigned. -- ChrisOwens Christopher Owens QA Manager [EMAIL PROTECTED] (510) 743-1152 x717 ChrisOwens's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4240 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25108 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

To get into the network setup, hold down the left-arrow button on the remote, then up/down through the menu. There's a point in the setup after the Squezebox connects to the wireless network, where you have the option of getting an IP address through DHCP, or manually entering an IP address. If your SB is not in the same subnet, it will not see anything else on your network. -- Martin -- mschiff mschiff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4298 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25108 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Quoting Paul Forgey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: You're right, actually on the Squeezebox it was under the "Browse Music" menu. There are no podcasts under the "podcasts" plug-in other than the two PodcastAlley menus. Podcast browser is not the same as the iTunes Podcasts menu item. the iTunes scanner looks for the playlist called "podcasts" any valid tracks found there are updated with an added "podcast" genre. It is possible that the find isn't working for tracks of multiple genres, thus the server currently thinks there are no itunes podcasts. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The bugzilla numbers are #2511 and #2531 (I think your problem is specifically the first of these two). This problem is resolved with SlimServer 6.5 and the 6.5-compatible version of the plugin, but unfortunately I can't apply the same fix to the 6.2/6.3 version because it relies on a small database change that has only been made to the 6.5 version (see bug #2625). [slim] Re: SB2 Freeze after 6.2.2 Upgrade
FIXED! The problem was solved after I emailed support, this was the suggested fix and it worked - It sounds like you may be running into a version conflict between your old and new Slimservers. Try the following: * Uninstall Slimserver from the Add/Remove Programs box in Control Panels * Delete the install folder (default is C:\Program Files\Slimserver) * Reboot your computer Next... * Install Slimserver 6.2.2 from: http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SlimServer_v6.2.2/ * Next, using a spare network cable, please hard-wire your Squeezebox to your router, and go through the connection process for "ethernet network" from the remote control. (do not select "Connect to a wireless network") * Next it will ask you to hold the brightness button to update the firmware. Once the firmware update is complete the Squeezebox will reboot. * Finally, disconnect the cable, and follow the wireless connection process one more time. Lastly... * In Slimserver under Server Settings, make sure your music folder is set correctly and click "Change" (if you're using iTunes, leave this blank) * Scroll down to Rescan Music Library, set it to "Clear library and rescan everything" and click "Rescan" Thanks to Daniel Evans at Slim for the above -- MrP MrP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1001 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23397 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

100m free air can be bridged wireless almost out of the box. So I would also suggest going wireless with directional antennas. I thing that 1 directionl antenna at the house would be sufficient, use a SB2 with wireless on the other side. There are quite a few plans on the web to build your own directional antenna. ciao, TommyZ -- tommyz tommyz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5457 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24793 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

pretty much. a SqueezeBox never really powers off, 'off' is just a player state with different settings for the display and brightness etc. I guess if you set the screen to be completely black it wouldn't be generating any heat, but the rest of the unit will still be powered. -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25100 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you're digging anyway, run 1/2 to 3/4" grey pvc conduit and pull CAT5 through it. They do make outdoor CAT5 (black jacket) which is not very expensive, but conduit is not a big deal, so if I were doing it I'd use both. NB 300' = 91m. Ethernet is limited to 100m so you're pushing it. Get the best cable (350MHz CAT5, or CAT6 outdoor if you can find it) and terminate it as close as reasonably possible to where it comes out of the ground. Then put a switch on either end and extend from there. However, while ethernet is best, I wouldn't bother running wire unless you're already planning to dig. First try ethernet-over-power. That might not work because of the distance. If you don't mind some tinkering, you might try 802.11g with directional antennas. About $800 should get you a pair of high quality parabolic dishes, cables, and a pair of linksys WET54G or similar - I'm not sure what bridges people use for directional links these days but I guess those would work fine. Just a thought, but streaming over that distance may be a problem. As mentioned, the advantage of synching would be minimal because how would you ever know, unless you phoned someone in the main house! Why not consider a small seperate server for the barn. It would be easy to dubplicate your files onto a cheap home built server and this doesn;t have to be powerful. -- ajmitchell ajmitchell's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=800 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24793 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
