[slim] Radio URL needs synchronized SoftSqueeze to play.
Hi Community. I am new to post on this community, although I have had my Squeezeboks for 6 months or so now. It is fantastic and through the whole period I have found only one strange thing that I cannot get to work properly. Here is my problem. I had a friend coming over all the way from Turkey, and she gave me a tip regarding a radio station called Lounge 102. (www.loungefm.net) When I got there I found this link http://www.loungefm.net/lounge_fm_2006.asf to the radiostream. Here the strange thing begins. I can easily play this on my computer, in any audio players, but I cannot access it directly from my Squeezebox. What is even stranger is that if I start up a synchronized Softsqueeze on my computer I can access this stream both from my Softsqueeze and from my Squeezebox directly. So in order to initiate this stream from my Squeezebox I need to have an instance of Softsqueeze running on my computer. If I do not have a Softsqueeze running it does not manage to connect. I have not seen this with any other radioURLs. I have searched the forum for an answer to this question, but I have not found anything on this Have any of you seen this before? Disclaimer: I'm speculating on much of this, and would love it if somebody with more knowledge of the various specs could show me I was wrong. funkstar;141448 Wrote: the reason DTS or AC3 wrapped up in a WAV or FLAC works is that the SB doesn't need to do any surround processing, it just thinks it is regular audio and passes it as is to the AV reciever. I'm guessing that surround MP3 would need to be decoded and then sent to the digital outs. So it is completely different process than what will currently work. I think that sending to the receiver will be the hard part. I wonder if it's possible to send a 6-channel WAV directly to a receiver... if not, the problem is (as you say) that the MP3 will have to be decoded and then re-encoded to some format the receiver understands (AC3 or DTS? Possibly not practical; I don't know what the licensing or processor power issues are). Decoding: according to Fraunhofer, decoding the six channels needs around three times the processing power of decoding stereo MP3. I have no idea if the SB2/3 could support that. Fraunhofer also claim that an MP3 Surround stream can be sent over S/PDIF just like MP3. I presume that implies the receiver will be decoding it, and that a compliant receiver would be required for the surround effect (but I'm just guessing). ... Just checked the specs for my receiver, which can handle AC3 and DTS -- there's no mention of multichannel PCM support (and indeed it seems to be that PCM data is forced to be stereo). That's just one receiver out of many, so maybe 6-channel PCM is still viable. I suspect that the best way to get this to work would be if a receiver supported MP3 Surround files natively, and could be passed the data over S/PDIF. -- smst smst's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=752 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28112 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi All, 6.5.0 seems generally OK for me so far...no crashes, random stops etc. However, I've 2 issues that I haven't seen any previous answers too on the forum... 1) when viewing my SS from another pc in my house, it doesn't refresh the page during playback. SlimPvC;141950 Wrote: Don't know what you mean exactly here, but I'm playing DTS WAVS (= 6 channel wavs) perfectly through the SB2. These are the wavs that play extreme white noise when played undecoded. So I guess the SB2 is capable of decoding these wav files on the fly and sending a digital signal to the receiver? It's not -- I wasn't clear. I was referring to WAV files containing 6 channels of uncompressed PCM audio. Your DTS WAVs actually contain specially encoded DTS data which is masquerading as PCM data. That's why they sound like white noise when played normally: most players think they're reading 2 channels of uncompressed PCM audio (it's all just bytes, after all) and the sound is horrible. That happens when the player is trying to convert the PCM data to an analog format to be sent to speakers (say, you have your PC hooked up to a pair of stereo speakers, and playing the WAV back through WinAmp or fb2k results in white noise). But if you have the player hooked up to a DTS-aware receiver using a digital connection, the playing software doesn't try to interpret the data and the receiver does the work instead -- and the receiver is clever enough to spot the DTS data and decode appropriately. You can connect a PC soundcard's S/PDIF output to a DTS-aware receiver and play DTS WAVs successfully (but you'll need to be careful that your OS and music playback software leave the volume alone -- for fb2k that means an attenuation of 0.00, and with Windows the volume slider needs to be at max IIRC (if you try this, turn your receiver's volume down very low at first in case I'm wrong!)). So anyway, the SB2 doesn't actually know anything about DTS WAVs. It does know that if it receives a WAV file and has been told to play it back at full volume over its digital output, it should shunt the data right out over the S/PDIF connection to the receiver, untouched. It's just a simple conduit for getting the DTS data from your PC to your DTS-aware receiver. (It's the same with Dolby Digital files from DVD, after they've been suitably wrapped in WAV format; DTS files from DVD too. DTS WAVs ripped direct from special DTS CDs can be passed through with no work at all.) So passing DTS and AC3 (Dolby Digital) data straight through to the receiver is what the SB2 can do now. Those are formats that the receiver can understand, and the SB2 need do no special work to pass them on. I'm wondering if there's another format (maybe an MPEG format?) that can carry 6 uncompressed channels and which is understood by many receivers. If there is such a format, perhaps it would be possible to decode MP3 Surround files on the SB2 and pump the 6 channels out over S/PDIF. Of course, in theory the SB2 could create an AC3 or DTS stream to get that data to the receiver, but I'd be surprised if the box had the horsepower to do so, and there may be licensing issues. (Plus it's a lossy-to-lossy conversion which isn't usually a great idea.) If receivers start to support MP3 Surround, it might be possible to just wrap such a file in a WAV container (as we can do for AC3/DTS files sourced from DVD) and pass it straight through. Would be nicer if the SB2 could support it though. -- smst smst's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=752 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28112 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Do you absolutely have to have the server wireless? A wireless server is a bad idea. Even if you can get it working, you may experience bandwidth issues and you'll be doubly-vulnerable to interference. Yes, here's the part where someone comes in and says works for me but it's still a bad idea and if you can avoid it, you definitely should. No other server you connect to is wireless, don't treat SlimServer any differently. At this point, it looks like the router is running in AP isolation mode, where wireless clients can't hear each other. This is strange because your router probably doesn't support this mode. Also other users of your router haven't reported this problem. You may still have firewall issues though. It can't transmit anything other than 2-channel PCM over S/PDIF and since surround MP3 isn't contained in a specially-encoded 2-channel PCM stream like DD and DTS, it can't be passed to a receiver, even if the receiver could decode such a stream. But might it not be possible to encode streams other than AC3/DTS in the same way? And if we can transmit a stereo MP3 to a receiver, I'd imagine that adding support for MP3 Surround would be fairly easy, should a receiver come to exist which can support it. Transformed MP3s would almost certainly be as big as their decompressed stereo-WAV equivalents, but would compress well to FLAC due to all the padding (going by the way AC3/DTS behaves). [slim] Re: 6.5 Unstable and Bugs
I just installed 6.5 (saw the notification that a new version was available at the bottom of the version I was using (6_3_x_v2006-06-03) First thing I noticed was that it loaded in my browser quicker, quite a lot quicker. The second thing I noticed was that all my album art has gone. I have a folder.jpg in all my album folders, but nothing displays. That's what brought me to the forum, to see if this was a documented problem and whether there was a fix. I haven't found anything. I'm running it on ClarkConnect 3.2 Home. The third thing I noticed was that my SB3 now displays Cyrillic! How long I have waited for this! Now I can get to work ripping my Russian CDs at last! I have had one SlimServer crash since upgrading (never had one prior to that) and I haven't really checked the bandwith issues on my DGL-4300 -- I did have a problem playing FLACs in the farther away of my two SB3s, but it's in the kitchen where I mainly listen to podcasts in MP3 format, so it wasn't too big a deal. I wonder whether the 802.11n standard will see its way into the SB3 (if it ever gets ratified that is!) I like how 6.5 looks over 6.3 based on my 10 minutes of using it. I hope the bugs get fixed, as I'm sure they will be. I've had the two SB3s about a year now and I'm very glad I chose them. They quite simply have changed how I consume my audio in the home and I would hate to 'go back'! So, any ideas on the album art thing? Unfortunately my receiver can't take MP3 files, but it would certainly be interesting to get this going. And if it could be made to work, the SB2/3 firmware could probably do it for us. Interesting! Well that would be the way. You'd need a firmware change so that the SB could pass surround MP3 without decoding it over S/PDIF, then a receiver capable of decoding surround MP3. This might be able to avoid the licensing cost on SD's part. I would assume a receiver capable of decoding surround MP3s is capable of decoding 2-channel MP3s, so all the SB would have to do is transmit the MP3 bits over S/PDIF. It certainly can recognize MP3 from other streams, all it has to do is pass the raw data over rather than convert it to PCM like it currently does. Not knowing how the SB firmware works, I'm not sure if this could be done. But it will be rebuilding the MP3 file from the SlimProto packets, just like it's doing now. However it will bypass the decoder and transmit the reassembled MP3 data directly over S/PDIF. Since this is handled by SlimDSP software, it should be possible to change it as it's not hardwired if you will. It'll certainly be easier to do it this way rather than heroics at the server decoding the surround MP3, then re-encoding it into DD or DTS, then getting that into SlimServer - and incurring two or maybe even three licensing costs in the process! (Surround MP3, DD Live and/or DTS Conncect). At first I thought surround MP3, why do I want a lossy format? But that's exactly what DD and DTS are, lossy multichannel. Lossless multichannel is DSD, MLP and (new) Dolby TrueHD. Those can't be handled by S/PDIF, no way no how, plus they are content-protected. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28112 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Zone control on Squeezebox or Transporter?
Maybe sync'ing should be perfect, but after doing a lot sync'ing I still find it to be hit-or-miss. I have a wired SB2 and a wireless SB3 running 11g only (signal strength usually around 80%). I've used 6.2.2 and 6.5 on a LinkStation HG. Sync'ing does work for me most of the time, and 6.5 seems better at this, but it's still quite common for there to be a stutter when starting a track, and then the track is out of sync. Sometimes it's subtle enough that it just sounds like overdone reverb, other times it's really annoying (the rooms are close enough you can often hear both players, otherwise syncing wouldn't matter). How annoying depends probably as much on the particular track as it does on the precise length of the delay. Usually they will click back into sync on the subsequent track. And forcing it to restart a track will also usually re-sync. I've tried a few things, and still haven't gotten sync'ing to be rock solid. I figured the wireless SB3 was the weakest link, but I still lost sync when I connected it via ethernet (need to retest this with 6.5). Sometimes turning off wireless computers on the network helps, but again, that's no guarantee. Haven't yet tried swapping the router (Netgear WGR614v3) for something else. I'll try it again soon after I upgrade my Dell running Ubuntu to slimserver 6.5, in case it's a problem of the LinkStation's underpowered hardware. From reading other posts I think it's not only radish who syncs without problems, and not just gorman and I who have less-than-perfect sync'ing. [slim] Re: Same album with several entries in the database
Playlists are basically just text files pointing to the actual files using file name and path. Slimserver first scans your music library and populates its database then it goes on to scan the playlists. The path to the referenced file in the playlist is read and compared to the database entries. If slimserver finds a matching path and filename in the database the already existing entry will be used. If there's no match slimserver tries to read the tags from the file referenced in the playlist and adds the information to the database, assuming it is a different file. This way playlists can be used to add tracks to your library that are outside of your music library tree. You can end up with duplicate entries for one of the following reasons: -You have a copy of your music library, music library in slimserver is set to the original but playlists reference the copy (or vice versa) -You have symlinks somewhere pointing to your music library, music library is set to the absolute path (without symlink) and your playlists use any symlinked path (or vice versa) e.g. music library setting: /music playlist: /home/slimpy/music/track.flac (/home/slimpy/music is symlinked to /music) If you need to move your music library you need to make sure the paths in your playlists are still valid. If you move your library your playlists will go missing because the files they reference are no longer there. If you copy you will end up with duplicate entries for the reason discussed above. To update your playlists you can use any text editor that can replace text in multiple files at once (search the internet). Make a backup of all playlists somewhere just in case the files get screwed up. Open all playlists in the editor and replace the changed part of the file path and save. -s. -- slimpy slimpy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1524 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

A Google search shows no exploits for port 9000, but that doesn't mean there aren't any or won't be any in the future. Your PC will currently be listening on port 9000 for all requests. If an attacker can figure out that this is SlimServer, he can maybe start your player up at 4 AM. :-) That's not to say there's no security risk. New exploits are being developed all the time and SlimServer is not designed as a secure server for use over the Internet. SSH is. If you don't want to use SSH but wish to avoid someone playing around with your SlimServer, you may want to set a user name/password in Server Settings - Security. currently, you can't. In 7.0a1 builds, there is an experimental ui (meaning it may go away if people don't like it or if it becomes annoying to maintain) that allows you to click a link to make the text appear or disappear in the fishbone skin. for current releases, you'll have to resort to editing a file. Look for the file, HTML/EN/cmdwrappers under the slimserver install location. open it with any text editor (notepad, vi, etc) Look for the [% BLOCK galleryitem %], around line 150 Near the end of that section, around line 180 you can remove the line: [%- content | indent(4) %] with that gone, the text under the image will no longer be there. installing any newer version of slismerver will require redoing this edit. -- kdf kdf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
RE: [slim] 6.5.0 is OK except for....
Hi, There were two causes on my machine for the no album no artist problem under 6.5.0 1) Cover art embedded in the album. I went through the files with iTunes and deleted the cover art and all the tracks but one were put back in the database. 2) The track title was too long on the last track (something classical that had a title that went on for probably more than 100-200 characters). I shortened the title and the track was back in the database. I found them all by browsing albums to no album and picked them off one by one in iTunes. It soon became obvious that cover art was the problem because I don't normally use it and tracks without cover art were OK. Cheers, James 2) I now have a bunch of random no artist/no album tracks. I saw another poster mention this but couldn't spot the solution. I can't see them in mp3tag or in the file directory. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

...after switching from the 7.0 to 6.5/6.51 (there are some plugins I can't live without), I can't seem to get a complete scan of my collection. Worse, for the life of me, I can't seem to get *any* debug information to help me figure out which track(s) I presume have bad mp3 tags. I have approximately 2K artists, 30K songs (iirc). After doing a fresh install, I only get 728 artists. And I can see lots of gaps in my artist lists. Clues and work: - I've tried every debugging flag combo that makes any sense to me (d_mp3, import, scan, *sql, etc.) and not only do I fail to get error messages...I don't seem to get the logging of the successful scans, either. Which I seem to remember getting previously. [I've seen the other threads here about this and I, too, only get UPDATE contributors SET customsearch = ? WHERE ( id = ? ): errors.] - If I navigate to a missing directory, the tracks get added to the DB, as expected. - I've tried looking for new, clean and rescan, and even removing the sql db. - More than once, I've actually had the entire db picked up (i.e., 2K artists show up) but it immediately disappears once a rescan runs (like, over night). - Of course, none of my gallery-view artwork is working. Only when I drill down to an entry. I am delighted to re-scan, try different debugging options, post results, you name it. Any help appreciated. Thanks. What kind of files do you play? Specifically, what bitrate? You can limit the bitrate by going to Player Settings - Audio - Bitrate Limiting. Almost surely this is due to poor wireless reception and higher bitrate files, but if you wish you can go to Server Network Health and enable performance monitoring, then post the output here. I can't remember where this was in 6.3 (Server Settings - Plugins? In Help?) but in 6.5 it's in Help. 6.5 won't be able to cure wireless issues but since the scanner process is separate, your music won't skip due to low server resources when you're scanning. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28201 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It would be worth trying a 6.5.1 nightly build before going through to painful process of tracking down exactly what might be missing. -kdf ps. a great majority of the 'bugs' being reported are in fact all a combined problem due to upgrade issues that weren't properly handled. If you did an upgrade from 6.3.1, it is also worth getting rid of Plugins and HTML directory trees and reinstalling. Old plugins/page templates are a nuisance. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: 6.5.0 - No Album Art in random mix
You don't mention what you've done, so I'll start with the obvious. (1) Do a complete clear and rescan of your music library. (2) Force your browser to clear its cache. (3) If that doesn't work, try trashing the database cache file to make sure it starts fresh. I haven't had to do this yet on 6.5, so I'm not sure what the name of the relvant file is in 6.5. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28202 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
