[slim] Re: 6.5.0 scan error (sql)

2006-10-08 Thread zulu

Found the bug. The song had a tag called "ID", which confused the
scanner because "id" is the PK for the "tracks" table. I think the
scanner code should be a bit smarter to deal with these cases. Anyways,
I just deleted the "ID" tag and got around the problem.

Probably should be a bug report.

I do not have any playlists or musicmagic -- used a tag editor to clean

Everything about my configuration is the same (as far as I know) as it
was with previous versions of SlimServer, where I did not see this

You can keep album art in a seperate image file, or directly in the mp3
itself (in a tag). iTunes will read from either location, but if you
use it to download, it saves it in a seperate file - where other apps
can't see it.

If Ubuntu 6.06 is like earlier versions, you just use "sudo" to gain
root privileges. So you would go to a command line and type "sudo nano
/etc/fstab". It would then prompt you for a password, and as long as
you're the one who installed Ubuntu, you can just give your usual
password and it will let you in as root. You will then be in the text
editor "nano", with /etc/fstab open for editing. Be careful, because
root is the all-powerful user, so it's possible to muck things up if
you're not careful.

I use a couple methods. My tagging software (Cowbell, probably only
linux) will pick up some covers and store them as "cover.jpg" in the
albums folder. Failing that I have a couple tabs open on my browser set
to Amazon and Google. I tried to find the largest image possible
(closest to original) and save it in the same way as above. It's
tedious for sure but it's worth it to browse by cover sometimes. Easier
to spot something you haven't listened to in a while

[slim] Looking for Good Info on Album Art Downloading

2006-10-08 Thread BBobley

Can anyone point me to a good primer on album art downloading? I'm
interesting in learning more about how it works. I am using MP3 as my
file format.

For example, I've noticed that if I use MP3Tag to find album art, it
seems to store it in such a way that iTunes also can see it. But if I
use iTunes to find the album artwork, then MP3Tag does NOT see it. So
it would seem that both programs use a different technique for storing
artwork.

If anyone knows of a good FAQ or article that discusses the various
ways album artwork can be stored for MP3 files, I'd appreciate it!

ReplayGain definitely does affect the volume even when it's set to
fixed. No doubt about that when you switch it off for a recent "master

This debate has been smacked around in the audiophile forum on several
occasions. You might want to do a search there.

Squeezebox/Transporter does no volume adjustment in the analog domain.
IIRC, the only instance is within the Transporter, which has internal
jumpers for adjusting the attenuation of the analog out.

This was in response to the details in firmware, so this means it's
done at the player.

Regarding it being a "lossless" process I would venture to say it isn't
- if the track is HDCD-encoded, ReplayGain implemented in SlimServer
will disrupt HDCD decoding, which means it isn't bit-perfect.

[slim] Where/how is gain adjustment carried out?

2006-10-08 Thread peterbell

I have all of my CDs encoded using FLAC. I recently added replaygain
tags to the files.

My first question is:

Does the gain adjustment get performed at the Server or the player?

Secondly:
Obviously, if the first answer is 'Server', then the adjustment is
carried out in the digital domain. However, if the adjustment is
performed at the player, is this done in the digital or the analogue
domain?

If the adjustment is performed in the digital domain, then it must be a
'lossy' process and not conducive to good perfect reproduction of the
original waveform. However, if the adjustment were to be carried out
in the analogue domain, then it would probably not be detrimental to
the sound.

6.5.1 certainly seems to have fixed -some- things, but I'm still
finding some oddities - though I suspect these are due to wierd
tagging.

I used mp3tag to re-tag an album of pieces by Ferranti and Ferrier into
their separate composers. Right now, if I do an Advanced Search for
"Ferrier" in the Artist, I find 4 tracks; but if I then click on one of
these tracks, and then click on Ferrier as a link to the artist, I get 0
albums with 0 songs by 0 artists! Meanwhile, clicking on the artist of
a track tagged by Ferranti lists two copies of the album, with slightly
different titles.

I'll need a good rummage through the tags to see what strangeness is
going on... I wonder how much else is missing but I just haven't
noticed yet!

I've tried emptying the temp folders and everything else mentioned.

It would appear there is a bug which crashes scanner.exe when it sees a

Re: [slim] Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Requirement - Bad!

2006-10-08 Thread Michael Herger

Assuming that the developers indeed have made a dreadful mistake and
made MySQL a requirement, I'd like to know... WHY?

One reason that hasn't been mentioned is the inability (or buggyness in
this area?) of SQLite to serve more than one process. The scanner is now
run in a separate process.

The data model and processing requirements for a tool like Slimserver
do not outgrow the abilities of so-called 'embeddable' databases such
as sqlite. Convince me otherwise, if you can.

May be the data model isn't complex, but the user in this application is
more demanding than your accountant: ours are used to waiting a second or
two for a new screen. Most of the users here don't want to wait so long
when browsing their music collection on the display. That said I'll add
that I've already been using MySQL with earlier SlimServers as it was
about 30% faster in tests using the CLI. Probably not representative, but
good enough a reason for me to swap.

Thanks,JimThere's two possible causes, AFAIK -- you're transcoding from one format into another, and the transcoder is having issues; or, your network is dodgy for the task at hand.
The former is relatively rare, but does happen; the latter is very common and usually takes several days to adequately diagnose, most of which is spent in the Kubler-Ross stages of denial and anger.

Maybe I am a little dense, but if the simple search is searching for
text strings in the TITLE, ARTIST and ALBUM fields, why doesn't it find
all tracks by an artist then? Isn't the artist just a text string in
the ARTIST field?

Example:
SONG TITLE:Pata Pata
ALBUM: Putumayo Presents The Best Of World Music, Vol. 1: World Vocal
ARTIST: Miriam Makeba

If I search for "Makebe" this song doesn't show up, but searching for
"Pata" it does...

I'm using netstat from a shell script for that. The script calls
netstat at regular intervals (2 minutes at present), resetting a
timeout if there are inet connections which don't match a predefined
list of don't-care services.

There's a fixed connection showing up on netstat for any connected
Squeezebox, so it's an easy task to not shut down before all of them
are down. Similarly, any connected PC (member of the same workgroup)
is represented by a netbios connection. It might be trickier to watch
them for activity - shorter monitor intervals should do in most cases.

I have always been surprised that Slimserver does not either install
itself under a user account that has network access or creates one
itself whilst installing. The mapped drives issue for Windows is a
hardy perennial here. It's a query that comes up with annoying
frequency.
However, not being much of a computer bod there are probably issues
with creating accounts that I do not understand.

2006-10-08 Thread JJZolx

I'm really surprised this was committed to the stable 6.5.1.

If the new SlimTray reconfigured the service on its own, then it's be a
pretty large bug.

Aside from the ugly windows opening up, the biggest issue here is that
it requires a user to be logged on. So if someone chooses this and
decides to log off the computer when they're not using it, there goees
SlimServer. What happens when one user logs off the computer and
another logs on? Isn't that going to interrupt any music streams
coming from the server when SlimServer shuts down and then restarts?
Has this been tested with XP's fast user switching?

Was this ability added only to enable the use of mapped drives? There
are much better ways to address that issue.

2006-10-08 Thread Niss

I have 2 squeezeboxes but will add more. I am planning to have a routine
that runs periodically on the server to check whether any of the SBs is
running, but also the server runs SAMBA, serving other PCs for
file/print serving, so the routine would also need to check whether any
client connections are in use before hibernating.

So the problem with initiating the power off manually from a Squeezebox
is that it might cut off a SAMBA connection, also it relies on
remembering to do it. The CLI and the " power ?" command
would seem to be a good answer, just that I don't know how to use the
CLI (and read the reply) from a bash script.

In addition my Slimserver service startup type has been changed from

[slim] 6.5.1 - dos window keeps opening

2006-10-08 Thread ModelCitizen

I upgraded from 6.5 to the 6.5.1 nightly from the 06th Oct using
SlimServer_6.5_v2006-10-06.exe. I now find that whenever I hit play for
any track on the SlimServer web gui that a blank dos box opens up. I've
upgraded using last nights nightly (SlimServer_6.5_v2006-10-08.exe) but
still the same thing happens. Has anyone else had this? I normally use
the Fishbone tan skin and have tried reverting to the default skin but
it makes no difference.

I am sure this is probably not related but (just in case...) when I
installed the latest nightly (stopping Slimserver first via the tray
icon), a file (can't remember which) would not install into C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread until I had gone
to task manager and killed the mysqld.exe process.

How many Squeezeboxes do you have? In particular, how much physical
checking would you need to do to ensure that no SB is streaming
anything?

I can appreciate that you may not want to hibernate your machine by
physically going to it - it may be in a different part of the house.

But what I am thinking of is that you can use the Execute Script plugin
to hibernate the computer from a Squeezebox, but I'm not sure if that's
still too incovenient for you.

Many thanks for that (I should have looked harder).

I can use the CLI interactively by telnet to the host/port 9090 and run

But how can I do this from a bash script? Is there a UNIX command I can
use to send the CLI command to Slimserver and read the reply?

Thanks for any pointers.

I think the NAS + SB3 / Transporter route is one a lot of people are
going to favour in the future; and is not worth 'forgetting' about.

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Requirement - Bad!

2006-10-08 Thread erland

I really can't see the big problem here. We had a bundled database in
6.3(SQLite) in 6.5 we also have a bundled database(MySQL).

If you are a non technical person, you don't se any difference. There
is no extra installation, there is no exta configuration.

If you are a technical person who didn't administate/manage the SQLite
datbase with third party tools you won't se any difference. There is no
extra configuration or management with the bundled MySQL compared to the
earlier bundled SQLite database. The MySQL database bundled is by
default configured with no network support, so the security risk
shouldn't be a problem either.

If you are a technical person who cares about the database and wan't to
administrate/manage it with third party tools, you will see the
difference. Earlier you had to use user unfriendly tools towards a text
file which could easily be corrupted, now with MySQL there is a lot of
third party tools available which you can use to manage/administrate
your database.

Slim Devices could of course have choosen to say that they support ANY
database, but that would probably have been a huge hit on the support
team which would result in that we would get less support for real
problems. It would probably also have resulted in less time for the
developers to implement real slimserver functions because they had to
spend time to make sure to test the existing code toward all available
database products.

The only bad thing I personally can see with MySQL is if it make
slimserver not to work on low memory/slow CPU devices such as NAS
boxes.

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Requirement - Bad!

2006-10-08 Thread roamingstudio

If you read through the 3rd Party stuff there are quite a few threads
showing that some of the NAS (network attached storage) devices are
taking a huge hit in performance with 6.5.x This could well be due to
the need for MySQL (or not - ive not had time to read the SS source
code).

However an option to keep the old database format would possibly be
good for these groups of people - if it works; dont fix it. If you need
improved performance then the path is probably to have a custom mini-itx
/ PC based system; in which case MySQL is not a problem.

Just my 0.02$

Another question - should the qnap have come with some documentation for

(1) Well, more like post-children in my case!

(2) You'd be surprised how quickly you can work through these if you
put your mind to it, using mp3tag and its filter and sort capabilities,
especially if your music is consistently tagged in the first place. You
can also use its regular expression capabilities to write scripts to add
a value to a multi-valued tag, which can be helpful. I'll bet you could
cover 90% of almost any classical collection in a weekend...

2006-10-08 Thread Andrew L . Weekes

> For folks that have a few thousand or so titles and don't need the
> complication of a c/s rdb, sqlite performs more than adequately.

I beg to differ.

On my Slimserver box, which is a lowly PIII 600, the performance
improvement from migrating the database to MySQL was DRAMATIC.

Despite the extra processes, memory etc, it was a very obvious
improvement in speed of response. That was under SS 6.3, so the only
variable was the database itself, the SS code was unchanged.

I think we can all easily get bogged down by dogma, but what matters is
results. The other arguments are irrelevant to most users, they don't
care what database is used, they only care about whether it works or
not, something it plainly does ;)

Andy.
