[slim] Re: The ultimate remote control?

2007-01-11 Thread tyler_durden

I tried using my wife's Palm TX to control slimserver and it was a PITA.
Screen too small and browser doesn't cache so pages have to load each
and every time you access them (at least that's how the built-in
browser behaves). I also tried reading some ebooks on it- .pdf's that
I converted to .pdb files. OK for novels, but not good for text books
with lots of pictures.

I didn't want the weight or cost of a laptop, so I started looking for
something between a laptop and a PDA and found the tablets. The 10.4"
touch screen will be very nice for browsing my music collection (now
I'll have to add cover art, I suppose) and reading books in portrait
mode. I'll have to see if I can find some software for remote control
that uses the IR ports.

Too bad it runs windoze. I'll try linux if I can get the touch screen
to work with it.

[slim] Re: Playlists: best practices?

2007-01-11 Thread Wirrunna

Rhuffman, I'm another MusicIP (MIP) supporter. I generate playlists from
the Slim Server remote and these days rarely save them, I just generate
another using the same seed song. There is a parameter in the MIP
plugin that you can set to adjust the variety, set it to 0 and you will
always generate the same mix, set it to 9 and you won't recognise the
mix after it plays your seed song.
When I started re-ripping (due to finger trouble I lost my RAID5
library) I had MIP running and analysing in the background, this way I
was not faced with a great long analysis. (The first time it took 5
days straight).
To answer your other questions, to generate the same playlist to two
libraries identical except for format, well you could do it but you
would have to have two different login accounts, one library in each
and it would be a bit fiddly.
Generating playlists on tags, well MIP analyses each song and generates
its own info that it uses. You can set a bunch of different parameters
to get mixes that vary from depressingly similar songs to mixes that
make you say "Who put that in my music library??"

[slim] Re: Playlists: best practices?

2007-01-11 Thread Brian Ritchie

I'm fairly sure that SS can cope with absolute paths in playlists,
though at least one version I had early on interpreted different paths
to the same file (e.g. "C:\Docs etc\..." and "\\My Served Music\...")
as two different files, so if two playlists used different paths to the
same file, I'd get two listings for it in SS.

This stopped me from sitting in the living-room listening to one
playlist whilst making others on the laptop using the network path to
the server. (Memo to self: must sort out remote desktop stuff for
non-Professional XP ...)

While I'm here, I'll put in a plug for one of the features of SS
playlist construction that I *really* like: the ability to click "x" on
an artist, album or genre and have all matching tracks removed from the
active playlist. So if I decide I've had my fill of Yes after all (or,
more likely, if my wife turns up - she can't stand 'em), I can remove
them all with one click (OK, and some navigation) but leave the rest
intact.

One thing I'm less happy with is that if I'm part-way through a
shuffled playlist and add some more stuff, then the whole thing is
reshuffled, so that things that have already been played come up again.
Then again, I wouldn't want it just to add the new stuff to the end of
the list. Maybe what I want is to be able to set an option so that
tracks are removed from the active list once they've been played.

2007-01-11 Thread aubuti

Hmm, that's odd, because I thought I had posted a reply to your first
post. You don't say what format your files are in, but I strongly
suspect that you'll have to go back to a "raw" format, like WAV. Then
use cutpoints to define the tuning/crowd noise as a separate track. You
can do this using a cue sheet (leaving everything as a single file) or
by separating them into different files.

Useful tools for doing this are Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net),
GoldWave, or several other packages. They will analyze the tracks and
try to guess where the useful cutpoints are, but it still usually
involves a fair bit of work. I hope there are simpler options, but I
can't think of any.

I love my SB, but I'm a Machead, so the AppleTV thing's audio

Of course, it would have to sound as good or better than SB3, and
handle Internet radio with aplomb before it would trip my trigger.

One other thing I don't have is an HD t.v. and I'm wondering if AppleTV
requires that. I'm having trouble figuring that one out. With only

Morberg, you're quite right - me too - but the playlists created via
Slimserver don't use relative paths (so you can use the same playlist

[slim] Re: Itunes / FLAC Strategy anyone?

2007-01-11 Thread rhuffman

I do what some of the other folks do: keep parallel directories of FLAC
and MP3. To rip CDs, I use Exact Audio Copy, and for it's "compression"
I use Mareo, which is really just a program that lets you run multiple
compressions. In my case I configure LAME to compress to MP3 and and
FLAC to compress to FLAC. So for each song ripped, I get these files:

G:\Music\FLAC\\\.flac
G:\Music\MP3\\\.mp3

For playlists, so far I've been generating the playlists for FLAC and
keeping them in the FLAC directory. I use a text editor if they contain
absolute paths, making them relative. Then I copy them to the MP3
directory and do a global replace of ".flac" with ".mp3".

The EAC/Mareo/LAME/FLAC setup is great, but I'm still trying to figure
out a more convenient way to deal with the playlists: I hate having to
edit, copy, and edit again.

[slim] Wake on LAN and bridged networks

2007-01-11 Thread Creeky

Hi all. New Squeezebox 3 owner here, trying to get Wake-on-LAN to work
over a bridged network.

The configuration is as follows:
. Squeezebox connected wirelessly to a Belkin F5D8230-4 wireless router
(which works well according to
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?RouterStatus).
. Slimserver running on Mac Mini connected via wired ethernet to a
Netgear WGPS606 wireless print server. This print server includes a
wireless/ethernet bridge and built-in 4 port ethernet hub. The Mac Mini
is connected to the 4-port hub and the WGPS606 is connected wirelessly
to the Belkin router, acting as a bridge between the two.

Everything works apart from Wake-on-LAN. A quick network trace with
Ethereal shows the problem: the Squeezebox is broadcasting an ARP
request to find the MAC address on its network segment associated with
it's configured IP address for the Slimserver. Because the WGPS606 is
bridging the wireless side and its built-in 4 port wired hub where the
Slimserver is actually located, it correctly responds back with its own
wireless MAC address. The Squeezebox then uses that MAC address to
generate the Magic Packet and broadcasts it. The WGPS606 forwards the
broadcasted magic packet to its wired hub side, but because it contains
the MAC address of the WGPS606 and not the Mac Mini, the Mac Mini does
not wake up.

If I use a tool like the Magic Packet generator from www.depicus.com,
configure it to broadcast a Magic Packet containing the Mac Mini's
ethernet MAC address, and broadcast this from a laptop connected
wirelessly to the Belkin router, the Mac Mini wakes up just fine.
Similarly if I attach a Squeezebox via wired ethernet to the WPGS606's
4-port hub, it wakes the Mac Mini fine (since there is no bridging in
this case, the Squeezebox's ARP request results in the Mac Mini's MAC
address as the response).

My question is: can the Squeezebox be configured to use a manually
supplied MAC address (or one retrieved by the Slimserver software from
its host) to generate the Magic Packet, rather than it using ARP to try
and work out the MAC address of the Slimserver host?

Would this require an enhancement to the Squeezebox firmware or
Slimserver software?

I'm sure anyone wishing to use a Squeezebox wirelessly and use the
Squeezebox's capability to wake up the computer running the Slimserver
software by using a wireless/ethernet bridge would greatly value this
capability.

Hmm, that explains a lot. Winamp had the same problem till about a year
ago. I used a plugin to solve the gap. Since version 5.X it played
gapless (as far as I could tell), so I was under the impression that
this was something still missing in the squeezebox/slimserver

[slim] Re: How do i connect A NAS to a PC ?

2007-01-11 Thread SteveEast

Good question, iTunes does make it tougher. I use iTunes myself, but
I've never looked at having it support multiple hard drives.

I think you'll use iTunes' advanced preferences to change the iTunes
Music Folder location. Then you *wont* consolidate the library because
that would copy all the stuff from the original drive to the new drive.
But, as I say, I've never done this.

This URL:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748

tells you how to move your music to a new location - if you avoid the
consolidate, I think you'll be fine. Effectively, the iTunes Music
Folder location just tells iTunes where to place new music - there's an
XML file that has the actual path to each song.

You might want to browse the iTunes support forums as well.

Steve.

I'm not sure if anybody here even cares but I managed to create my own
firmware for the N5200 to allow for ssh access on their latest firmware
(ver 1.00.05). In 1.00.05 they disabled ssh. I also created a user
account called toor with a password of 123456 so you can login via ssh.
Enjoy! I don't know about most of you but I've been trying to get into
this array for the last 2 months! To be able to copy directly from one
array to another is extremely powerful! can we say rsync via ssh!
Also with ssh access I now have a super cheap linux box to do other
simple stuff with now!

Be careful though. Use this file at your own risk and don't mess up
your data. If you don't know much about busybox, logical volume
manager, or linux software raid, you probably should avoid logging in
so you don't mess up your raid array. A firmware re-flash may not
recover your array if you mess it up.

might be a networking issue at the location. Or it's possible theres an
issue with the player, this should point us in the right direction.

[slim] Apple TV Competition?

2007-01-11 Thread Zaphilosophile

i am curious to know what other members think of the new apple tv media
streaming box? obviously there are many differences between the
sqeezebox and appleTV such as the dependence on itunes - a TV - a
Computer etc. however they are obviously similar in function i.e.
streaming music wirelessly.

what do you think of all the hype around this box? how much of a
competitor do you reckon it is?

cheers,

[slim] Re: Playlists: best practices?

2007-01-11 Thread Pale Blue Ego

The playlist creation in Slimserver isn't totally horrible, just a
little clunky. One thing to remember is that whenever you are playing
music, the current queue is essentially an unsaved playlist. Saving it
and giving it a name puts it in the permanent playlist folder.

The "+" button of course adds stuff to the current playlist; what you
may not realize is, pressing "+" while displaying a track in the
current playlist actually REMOVES the track from the list.

Finally, there are some other front ends that may be easier for
creating and fine-tuning playlists. Look for Moose and SlimRemote on
the following page:

2007-01-11 Thread Siduhe

I think that there is a limitation in that you would have to use the MIP
GUI to create the mixes (rather than creating a mix from within
Slimserver) because MIP uses relative paths for playlists on "disk
based devices" only (but you can mount your music folder as a disk
based device to get round this limitation and Slimserver would pick up
the playlists when you did a rescan).

MIP also offer a free tool which will allow you to clean up .m3u lists
and convert these to relative paths with a few clicks...shouldn't be
too hard to tweak this to your particular needs.

Not exactly a playlist creator, but have you looked at MusicIP (formerly

[slim] Squeezebox 3 reboots

2007-01-11 Thread groovyf

Here's an odd one.
Since upgrading to SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11067 - Windows Server
2003 - EN - cp1252 (and also had to upgrade S3 firmware), the
Squeezebox 3 reboots by itself usually a minute or so into the second
song I play.

Basically. I switch it on, choose an album, and press Play. Then
sometime in the second song it reboots itself, reconnects to the
wireless network and continues to play.

Any ideas at all?
My Squeezebox 2 (also wireless) does not exhibit this behaviour. Could
it be the updated firmware of the beta build of SlimServer I
downloaded?

Thanks

2007-01-11 Thread rhuffman

Thanks for the tips. When browsing, I was selecting the right arrow
button for albums in the left pane, thus adding the entire album to the
playlist. I didn't realize you can click on the album name in the left
side, then select individual tracks instead. I also didn't see the
"save" button at the top of the playlist. All in all, it wasn't very
intuitive (at least for me). I was looking for a "create playlist"
button somewhere in the menus on the left.

I still haven't found a good way to create playlists with relative file
names. If I want to use a third-party tool like MediaMonkey, it exports
file names with absolute paths. That means I have to do some editing if
I move my library or want to generate the same playlist for both FLAC
and MP3 files.

Oh well: guess I should quit whining and go write some code.

[slim] Slimserver 6.5x and SB2=no music?

2007-01-11 Thread AudioFrog

I cannot get my wireless SB2 to work with any flavor of Slimserver 6.5
or 7. I can run 6.3, 6.2 or any earlier version with no problems. I
even completely wiped my XP PC and started with a fresh virgin install
but it still does not work (even with anti-virus disabled). Slimserver
6.5x & 7 successfully scans my Itunes library and the firmware update
runs with no issues but when I select a song from a playlist, the SB
displays the musical note and the level meter graph but there is no
movement on the graph and I hear nothing. The slim.exe chuggs away for
about 30 seconds after a song is selected (I assume that it is
converting something since I run Apple Lossless within Itunes). The
internet radio selections play fine. I have been at this for a few
months hoping that some nightly build will work but none have so far.
The network test shows 100% even at 6000k. The slimserver log (below)
looks pretty clean with the exception of one entry so I'm not sure it's

"steam and blather" - nice. Sorry if we stopped being slim fanboys for

The only thing that's really relevant to Slim is that AppleTV will wipe
out a chunk of their sales - and the only thing that the iPhone will
ever control is the AppleTV. It sure was a smart move selling out to
Logitech...

My money is on *neither* becoming the best portable UI for SS/SB.

I think the "i" stands for "i've been sued by Cisco, who owns the
trademark to iPhone, and even currently *ships* a product called
iPhone". Apple was remarkably arrogant (what a surprise) to announce a
product it hadn't secured the trademark rights to...

[slim] Re: web ui poll

2007-01-11 Thread MelonMonkey

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31443

Question: How do you control the Slimserver?

- Stock Handheld Remote
- 3rd Party Remote (Harmony, Nokia, PDA, &c)
- Web Interface
- 3rd Party Computer Interface (Moose, JRMC, &c)

A skin usage poll could be useful. Likely to start some flames like
anything else of course.

I primarily use the new-style remote because it's a very well designed
unit. I didn't bother to add an activity to my Harmony 880 because
frankly, the Harmony line although usable, is very very dated and would
suck pretty bad for controlling the Squeezebox.

I use the Fishbone web UI with a bunch of mods I've made to improve
things here and there. It's not vomit-pool awful, but it's pretty bad.
And Fishbone is the best web skin in my opinion. Most usable with the
required functionality presented in the most logical places.

No matter what skin you use, the Web UI is slow. Increasing server
horsepower helps, but nothing is going to get you the same speed as a
dedicated browsing/navigation aplication.

I don't think Logitech will get SB tech into the hands of consumers
without a better UI. Typical consumers will buy Olive and Sonos
products for their respective strengths. Though I think Apple's new
Apple TV will quickly become the defacto standard for many folks.

I hope Logitech can kick it into high gear soon and start with the
product announcements and various improvements needed to push this
product line to the front and keep it there.

Excellent, thanks for that.

Looks like full screen video should be a reality on that device then.
There is an Imaging Video Accelerator and a 2D/3D Graphics Accelerator
which would both help.

The processor can be scaled up to 1ghz, but by the looks of things the
IVA is outside the main processor block, so might run at the same speed

Re the OS on the N800 - it is a new version and not backwards
compatible.
i.e. OS 2007 does not run on N770.
The different processor was reported as the key reason. I have also
seen comments that some of the apps are making serious use of the extra
power and would be way to sluggish for N770.

I'm sure that, once the source is out, there will be a community effort
to get it working on N770 or to backport the best new bits into OS
2006.

Three is also a developers program - 500 units available at $100 (I
think).

I also had a play on one at CompUSA - and it certainly did feel
generally faster than my 770.

is there anything specifit wrong with it, or does it just not work any

For instance, if it is a dodgy power connection, that could be repaired
very easily. But if there was anything wrong with the screen or the CPY,
then you are probably SOL.

Have you contacted [EMAIL PROTECTED] to see if there is anything they can

No not enough room and I've just begun ripping . I'm all the way up to

I just got my N800 and it's pretty cool. We don't have any WiFi at work
so it's home for lunch today. I guess that's when my wife will find out
I bought it...

As far as the screen protector goes, it really is difficult to see.
Nokia put an additional adhesive tab on the front to aid in removing
it. Mine came off without a problem.

I can't wait to get home and point it at SlimServer...

I have just been ripping the compilation CD into
\genre\various\albumname\xx-artist-songtitle.flac. and then manually
opening in mp3tag and adding the appropriate artist name with the
filename->tag function (in addition to the "Various Artist" artist tag
that is already on every track). Then in slimserver if I want to see
the entire album, I got to the "Various Artist" artist. If I want just
the one song by a certain band, I go to that artist and the album shows
up there, but with just their 1 track on the comp album. I have never
heard of the "albumartist" tag. I thought these were the only tags
supported by slimserver
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerSupportedTags

Also, what is the purpose of using the "compilation" tag? If I set
this would it allow me to leave out the "various artist" tag and then
in SS I could select to have the album show up as individual artists OR
as various artists? I do not think I like this because I prefer having
both like I do now.

[slim] Re: First sec of song getting clipped off

2007-01-11 Thread Mark Lanctot

Eric:

I do not intend the following as an insult - this is to help.

This is an informal user support forum. It is not the official means
of obtaining Slim Devices/Logitech support. So continuing to insist
several times a day on immediate assistance here may or may not help as
the developers do not always actively follow every thread on the forum.
There's a chance they might, but it's by no means assured.

For basic problems, it's best to contact support at their phone number
or using support (at) slimdevices (dot) com. Of course basic problems
can also be addressed in this forum.

However you have done some pretty intensive investigation into the
problem which should assist the developers in their bug squishing
efforts - you have identified an issue which is well beyond basic and
it does not appear to be something support can fix without developer
assistance. I would suggest you log a bug on
http://bugs.slimdevices.com. You'll need to create an account.
Bugzilla has mechanisms for assigning a developer, cataloguing,
tracking progress, prioritizing, etc. This forum does not.

Not being a developer myself, I can't promise progress on your bug, but
properly logging a bug is your best option. This may be a tough bug as
it involves a potential problem with Quicktime and Apple will almost
surely not help.

Other pointers:

- search for an existing bug first. I looked in this thread, I didn't
see a link to one. I also searched bugzilla for "AAC" and didn't find
anything relevant to this issue.

- "just the facts". Don't rant on bugzilla. Just present the facts
and your findings as complete as you can.

In my situation using the video balun I used a pair of the unused pairs
on a CAT5 line I was running ethernet over (ethernet doesn't use all the
pairs). I believe I separated the video pair out before it made it to
my switch. I'm not sure what a switch would do. My guess would be it
doesn't look at the pairs at all and likewise it wouldn't pass the
signal along. A passive hub might work, but who knows...

have to export them from a computer. And even though it's got WiFi and
Bluetooth on it, you can't sync iPhone with a computer wirelessly. And
there should be games on it. And you're required to use it as a
phone—you can't use it without signing up for cellular service. Boo."

>From Engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-iphone-is-not-a-smartphone/

And the reality slowly sets in about what the iPhone is and is not.
Noted analyst and Engadget pal Michael Gartenberg stated that the
iPhone is first party software ONLY -- i.e. not a smartphone by
conventional terms, being that a smartphone is a platform device that
allows software to be installed. That means hungry power-users -- you
know, those people ready and willing to plunk down $600 for an 8GB
musicphone -- won't be able to extend the functionality of their phone
any more than Apple (but thankfully not Cingular) dictates. Other
unfortunate realities about the device:

* No 3G. We know you know, but still, it hurts man.
* No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your
host machine.
* No expandable memory.
* No removable battery.
* No Exchange or Office support.

What you have produced is a downloadable app for open systems on
Smartphones that can open a HTTP link to get more data, which is a tiny
market compared to the rest of the cellphones out there that run Java
and Brew and where often you can't do that, or if you can via web
portals, it's such a tiny market that it's not worth it. Also, in case
you haven't yet felt it, Smartphone software gets ripped off and
appears on web pages within hours if it's any good. It's not illegal,
but it's not much of a business either :-(

I was CTO of one of the leading mobile gaming publishers and technology
developers - pm me if you want the details - and we produced games for
Vodafone and Verizon for the launch of their 3G services and created
top selling games for Disney, Sony and others on all of the US majors.
For the *vast majority* of handsets, ie. the mass market ones that sell
in the millions, you have to sell the applications through the operator
portals using their billing and provisioning systems and only after it
has gained their approval. You can go off deck, but you won't sell
anything. It also gets placed on decks according to rules laid down by
those operators and that's highly influenced by branding, marketing
budgets and well, who you are.

It's clear that Apple and Cingular will control the market for
applications to recoup the money invested. It isn't a Smartphone in the
true sense as a result and it will be 1st party or the big boys apps
only. It's a native development environment and rogue apps from geeks
are an issue. Can you do that right now for the iPod, or do games come
from approved parties? And I mean real business, not the odd hacked
version of Doom. Where the open market for games and apps on the iPod?
The same will apply for the iPhone or whatever tey call it after the
dust settles.

I don't think there's a difference between the differently labeled boxes.
SlimDevices is now part of Logitech, but support, development etc. imho is
still done by the same staff.

Squeezenetwork so the upgrade to Squeezenetwork will be on Jan 15.

WRT to Slimserver, this is my understanding -
6.5.1 is currently in beta and will be the next "official" release.

7.0 is in development with a lots of work being done on plugins - you
can download the latest code from the SVN site but unless you want to

They are, search for "SlimDevices Squeezebox". I don't know about France,
but I've bought my first a few years back in Switzerland.

[slim] Re: Last.fm stops SlimServer (6.5.1)

2007-01-11 Thread Siduhe

When you say "Last.fm playlist" do you mean a default station (loved,
personal, recommendation) or one you've created (similar artists / frou
frou for example) ?

I found that using the wrong syntax to set up a radio station could
crash Slimserver on 6.5.0.

If not, try going to Server Settings / Debugging / tick the flag marked
d_plugins, open up the logfile (top of the Debugging page, click
"here"), and try to connect to a station that crashes Slimserver. Cut
and paste the relevant bit of the log file (may need to refresh the
logfile page to see it).

Do you have access to your log file?
Or if you're running the default installation on Windows can you check
the Event Viewer for errors from SlimServer?

[slim] Last.fm stops SlimServer (6.5.1)

2007-01-11 Thread hunta

If I try to play one of my Last.fm playlists either using the remote or
via the browser interface SlimServer stops running.

I realise this is precious little info to work off, unless this is a
known issue. Any pointers please on how to start diagnosing the
problem?

Thanks.

This is MP3FS, which is what my script uses to do some of the work. The
difference is that I create an actual copy of the transcoded files to
avoid the processing overhead of transcoding to MP3 every time the file

that's better for anyone depends on their system and needs.

Considering the low prices of disk space, I'd say storing a copy makes
perfect sense. It doesn't need to be backupped.

[slim] Re: Gaps between songs in 6.5.1

2007-01-11 Thread Malor

Gapless, from what I understand, is hard to do with MP3. It has to do
with how the audio frames are constructed. If I understand correctly,
the server has to monkey around and fill in the last frame or frames of
the prior song with the first frames of the next, and I gather that
process is error-prone. MP3 is *designed* for single tracks, so adding
in gapless playback is a hack.

This is the biggest reason I use CUE with a single FLAC file for my
library. Slimserver deals very nicely with this format. It guarantees
gapless playback, because the entire CD is ripped as a single image.

When I need individual files for MP3 players, I use Foobar2K under
Windows; it works beautifully with CUE/FLAC. Its mass
extraction/conversion engine is the best I've seen on any platform,
period. It'll convert pretty much anything to anything, it'll do a
giant library all at once, and it will take advantage of all the cores
you want to throw at it.

I do this as a two stage process; first I drag my music directories
onto Foobar (it'll recurse an entire hierarchy at once) and have it
compress to a single directory. This dumps all the MP3s in the same
folder, with a number in front based on where they were in the
playlist, which guarantees that all filenames will be unique. (You'd
be surprised, for instance, just how many artists put Winter Wonderland
as the third track in their Christmas albums. :))

It takes awhile to finish compression; on my quad-core Kentsfield, I
compress VBR LAME at about 100x, but most machines are a lot slower.
Once it's done, I clear the playlist and drag the new MP3 folder onto
Foobar. I tell it to do a mass rename based on tags. This rebuilds the
original directory hierarchy and sorts all the files into their proper
places. It's nearly instant.

This is the best way I've found to manage a library... by storing
CUE/FLAC images, you can generate any other format you need with very
little effort.

What's the problem with the polarity? As I understand it polarity
doesn't matter as long as all the speakers agree on it. Or do
audiophiles disagree with this?

I was about to buy a Transporter, too, until I saw that it didn't
natively support wma lossless (in the forum). I think that the
SlimDevices help files are very unclear on this issue. Not all
slimserver builds can transcode wma lossless (I am thinking of the
Infrant NAS running Linux). When I read the Transporter specs, it was
written that it 'natively' supported wma lossless... but this is not
true.
I understand that Microsoft charges a hardware licensing fee for
hardware support - but how much are they talking about? The Transporter
is already $2K. This is a high-end device and, I feel, should include
native wma lossless support.

Anybody with any sense should choose open protocols. Luckily, any
lossless protocol can be converted losslesly to any other, so as long as
you can find the proper tools (I'm sure Microsoft won't have provided
you with any) you can convert to FLAC. This should do it:
http://www.litexmedia.com/wma_workshop/ (for a price).

MS & Apple are trying very hard to pull you into their corner and not

Rob, I agree completely. Many audiophiles have their SB's modified so
that the analog signal goes out directly from the DAC. This inverts
polarity. As a result, many of us are still sitting on 6.2.1 with V15
firmware (that also inverted polarity) and remedied the problem.
However, this means that we don't get all the bug fixes. We can't just
remedy the problem by swapping the speaker wires at the terminals as
this inverts polarity for ALL sources in the system. Also, the vast
majority of pre-amps do not have a polarity inversion switch.

So a simple software switch "Invert polarity - Yes/No" via SlimServer
interface would at least get us back to having all sources in correct
polarity. The ability to switch polarity on the fly via the remote
control would be nice but could wait until later.

However, any wire you use (coax or Cat5) cannot be carrying any other

to any active networking devices (no routers, hubs, etc.). None of
those devices would know what to do with S/PDIF.

If you follow the link GoCubs provided you'll see the device claims to
need only one pair of CAT5 wires. So apparently you could run many over
one cat5 cable and - with a proper splitter, you should even be able to
run a 100 Mbit ethernet connection on the same line, since they use only
4 wires IIRC.

Well, in my twisted mind, it seems that there are parallels between

Crap, the two have nothing to do with each other. I've seen no eminent

It's typical for the current world that people just heap everything

It amused me that you seem to have fallen for both.
