[slim] Delete music library?

2007-02-25 Thread cruster

Is there a way to delete my existing music library? Running OS X 10.4.8,
SlimServer 6.5.1. My iTunes library has been corrupted and rebuilt a few
times - SlimServer is showing 3 and 4 duplicates sometimes of albums,
and it's showing a lot of things that have been deleted out of my
iTunes library...they exist elsewhere but not to iTunes, and I've got
SlimServer set to only look to iTunes. Yet...there they are. I have a
LOT of MP3s for social events but the stuff *I* listen to is all in my
iTunes library so I only want to use that stuff. Is there a way to
rebuild or reset?

[slim] iTunes/JRMC Volume Adjustment and Slimserver

2007-02-25 Thread MeSue

Does anyone know if iTunes for Mac writes volume adjustment info into
the tags of your files, or does it just store that info in its
database? If it's written to the tags, does anyone know how to remove
it?

Here's the reason I ask...

I have all my files (MP3) on a network drive. I had done Replay Gain
analysis with J River Media Center and SlimServer could read it.
Everything was great as far as volume when listening on the
Squeezebox.

In November I got a Macbook Pro, and before I knew what I was doing, I
had imported some of my music from the network drive into iTunes on the
Mac. I noticed it was doing some volume analysis and stopped it, but not
before it had done an unknown number of files. Ever since then, when I
listen to my music through Squeezebox, I am always having to adjust
volume up and down, so I suspect iTunes might have done something to
the files.

Then again, it is also possible that something changed in SlimServer
where it stopped using JRMC's replay gain. I know I have updated it
several times in the past few months.

I'm just not sure how to figure out what the culprit is, and how to fix
it. Any suggestions?

There's a whole directory w/ sub-directory structure and I can't tell
which I'm supposed to delete and which I'm not. The rapidly jumping
tracks and no playback is evident again.

Too much hassle, I'll just revert to 6.5.0 and tray again after the

[slim] SlimP3 woes (network connection issues)

2007-02-25 Thread elmtree

I have an original slimp3 on firmware version 2.2.
Over the past couple weeks I've been having issues with it and decided
to update the firmware to the latest (2.3).

When I got the player in the update firmware mode (mac addr
displaying), and started the update software, it errored out saying
that it couldn't connect to the player.

I am able to set up the player just fine, but when I attempt to
actually play a song, it begins to flash 2 messages over and over
(Network appears to be disconnected AND The network is now connected).
Eventually I have to unplug/replug. Once it is reset, I'm able to
navigate through all menu items, and even scroll through my music
library... all is fine until I try to play a song.

I believe that I'm unable to upgrade the firmware version because of
this issue.

I have a Squeezebox, which runs wirelessly without issue.
My slimserver software is v 6.5.1

I've tried 2 different cat5 cables and 2 different hubs/switches. The
problem does not go awasy.

I opened the case to see if the NIC connection was loose, and it does
not appear to be.

I did have to re-solder the power connection back to the board... that
thing sticks like mad when pulling the power cord out so I think the
solder-joints became loose over time.

I've looked through the forums, but haven't seen anyone with a similar
issue.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks,
elm

It is amazing how much of a day you spend killing time when you are
stuck generating 3D models of circuit boards for documentation. Other
than that, it doesn't really take much time to send a few emails and
run the server during the day. If I'm listening to music, there's
nothing stopping me from running a patched server to see if things work
right. Of course, what happens when it doesn't, is that I can't help
but "just change one little thing" and before I know it, no time to hit

Richard Titmuss (of SoftSqueeze fame) helped with the firmware I
believe. Andrew L. Weekes helped design the Transporter PSU. I'm pretty
certain there were others whose ideas were incorporated in to the
Transporter (see forum). Someone is reponsible for all those bloody
buttons and the knob (wait till I get my hands on them!).

I'm very glad they've sold more Transporters than they thought they
would. I felt that Sean might have gone out on a limb to make the
Transporter and it was lovely to see his enthusiasm with making the
cicuitry and signal path as pure as he could. He/they deserve the
sales.
Hopefully it'll mean it'll continue to be supported too!

I believe it's in the file info - click on the file, and if you see a
volume adjustment or album volume adjustment value, SS sees it.

It doesn't seem to see LAME RG tags, but LAME RG tags seem to be
supported by very few programs. It's a shame, FLAC RG tagging at
encode time works very well.

It does write the results of its analysis in APEv2 tags. You can see
this in two ways: (1) the program "remembers" the results of previous
analyses, even after it's restarted, and (2) a separate tagger program
like Mp3tag will clearly indicate that an APEv2 tag has been added
after a track analysis is carried out. You can see this immediately if
you have both programs open at the same time - look at the tag types in
Mp3tag, modify the gains in MP3Gain, and when you refresh in Mp3tag,
poof, APEv2 tags appear in the analyzed files. Foobar indicates the
same thing.

In fact, if you were to use a tagger to remove the APEv2 tags, I bet
MP3Gain would "forget" its analysis.

The MP3Gain documentation is skimpy - I don't think they even indicate
what type of tags they use.

> -- doesn't Windows Explorer indicate the file has been modified whne you

Hmm, it should - you are modifying bits in the file. I don't doubt
what you're saying, but the fact remains, the RG tags have been added.
Some tagging programs can change tags while NOT altering the timestamp -
perhaps MP3Gain operates this way?

The failure to open an Slimserver IE window when slimserver starts

is due to timing. The bug fix to which kdf referred is only relevant
when port no is changed using httpport option, it won't fix this

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread oreillymj

If you tell Slimtray to "Automatically run at log in" then the
Slimserver process and associated processes are owned by the currently
logged on user and can be killed much like Unix processes.

If you select "Automically run at system start" then the processes are
started as a service and then they are usually owned by the local
system account or unless the user specifically decides to alter the
logon credentials of service. This is usualy done by owners of external
or mapped drives due to a lmitiation of Windows.

You can however execute the following shell command to specifically
shutdown the Slim MySQL process if started as a service and not affect
any regular MySQL instances a user might have running on their box

net stop SlimServerMySQL

Thanks for the responses.

I'm not streaming internet radio, just my CD collection stored on my PC
in the office.

You guys got me to thinking though

I am NOT using a static IP on the PC and when it gets disconnected from
the internet it is polling to find another available wireless netowrk to
hook up to. I live in a Condo building with at least 10+ networks nearby
and at least 4 of those are not secured.

I suppose that is what might be happening to the connection? I get
dropped by Comcast and then the PC hunts for another network to get
internet connectivity even though I'm not interested in connecting to
the internet, just maintaining my local wireless network connection and
being able to stream to my SB3.

Can I effectively eliminate this hunting by setting a static IP for my
PC to my router?

what confuses me is that does have a lame tag.

why doesn't it see it?

also, the first file does list a replaygain value...

BUT how do i know SS is actually using it on playback?

i do have SS configured to "smart gain" but how do i verify it see's a
value (or not) for any given file?

Re: [slim] upgraded to new software, now no internet access

2007-02-25 Thread MrSinatra

could be your firewall on either xp, your router, or both is blocking
you.

it sounds to me like you can play files locally, which is a good sign
if true.

its very odd the SB can't connect to SN.

one more thing to try is the newest nightly, 6.5.2

it might not solve your issue, but i think its better then 6.5.1
anyway. worth a shot at least.

I add albums and edit tag/artwork etc. regularly enough to make a
rescanning a regular necessity. With that many files in my library,
running a rescan on the NV is not feasible.

well, the thing is i can't say for certain. i was playing around with
the services and options and so on haphazardly... i'd hate to give you
bad info.

what i am sure of, is how [your] ST acts now given the environment i
described above.

i really can't say if that all was also true or pertaining to the old
ST.

i still have a copy of the old ST, would you like me to try it?

and if so, besides the IE window, what do you want me to look for?

i would prefer to leave the slimrelated services set to manual, unless
you specify different.

ok...

so basically in 7.0 ur saying SS will know, or be configurable, to have
mysql shutdown with a manual shutdown of slim.exe?

if so, it might not be worth your trouble to 'fix' ST for 6.5.x, or
maybe it would be easiest to just have 'shutdown mysqld' as an option
separate from shutting down SS.

let me know what, if anything, u'd like me to do. -mdw

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread bpa

Maybe I'm a bit thick tonight but can you confirm that aside from not
leaking handles, on your system you see NO change in behaviour of
SlimTray between my version and the official version.

With regard to mysqld - by design in SS6.5.1 in Windows mySQLD is not
shut down - it possible that decision was made because you can't tell
if MySQLD it belongs to slimserver or not. In SS7.0 there is now code
to shut mysqld down in response to a bug report. It's possible Dan was
mixed up about which version was being discussed Unix or Windows 6.5.x
or 7.0 behaviour.

The comment in the file MySQLHelp.pm in SS 6.5.1

Code:

  =head2 stopServer()

Bring down our private copy of MySQL server.

This is a no-op if you are using a pre-configured copy of MySQL.

Or are running MySQL as a Windows service.

It is probably in the LAME tag. I do not know what players can even
use the Replaygain values in the LAME tag, but here is a link to a tool

if what you say is correct, why:

Now, I can access my music collection but I have no access to the

sorry, i was unclear...

the entire post above describes how things are now using your
slimtray.exe

i am pretty sure it would also accurately describe the way the old one
acted, except for the handles issue (obviously).

i am uncertain as to the IE issue, if the old one did that or not, or
if ST is even a part of that issue. i had thought this was solved in a
recent beta, as per another thread seen here:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32843

but then i noticed some things might be off with it since that
thread... basically, i didn't feel i had enough info to post about it
yet.

but what is certain, is that for some reason, as per the environment i
describe above and using your new ST, it isn't working now. i don't
mean to suggest in any way however, that its your ST at fault, just
that that is the current situation on my system.

ah, i see... so its useful for when the computer is turned on, but not
logged in. very nice.

here is a link to the other thread about mysqld not shutting down:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26650

imo the mysqld should, as dan says, shutdown with slim if slim starts
it. i would rather it worked that way, then having to shutdown mysqld
separately via ST or task manager.

thx again, -mdw

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread bpa

Vdorta,

Can you revert back to your old SlimTray and see if that still works.
The error message is as a result of an extra error check I put into the
processID code. I need to look up what causes it.

MrSinatra,

I'm not sure what the first bit of the post is about. Are you reporting
a problem with the new SlimTray or explaining your setup to Vdorta ?

Since I now have a SlimTray development environment setup. I have a few
ideas how to fix the problem opening an explorer window before
Slimserver is ready - I think it has become more prevalent as it takes
longer for slimserver to get ready than the expected delay in
SlimTray.

I also want to set up SlimTray to modify the shortcut so that SlimTray
will open the port specified in preference and not always 9000.

I also have looked at what SlimTray bugs are open including the one
references by kdf and I'll see if I do something about them.

In Windows you runs processes as services so they can run when a user
is not logged in - similar to Unix/Linux daemons. This was a feature
lots of people requested a few years ago. You can run slim.exe as a
normal user process in a dos box.

Re: [slim] MP3Gain, MP3Tag, iTunes craziness

2007-02-25 Thread Mark Lanctot

You have two buttons: track analysis and track gain.

Track analysis merely writes the RG tags. So you need an RG-aware
program like SlimServer to use the volume levelling function. Nothing
will happen in iTunes/iPod, it's not RG-aware AFAIK.

Track -gain- will not only write the RG tags, it will also -alter the
audio-, which means it can be used with non-RG-aware programs/players.
If you play these files back in SS, you'll get levelled playback without
using RG. If you use RG, you'll get a "double levelling", don't do
this.

If this contradicts one of my earlier posts in this thread I'll correct
that earlier post.

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread MrSinatra

fyi:

i set both 'slim services' in XP to manual, they don't start
automatically.

slimtray does, its in the startup of my pgm menu.

my config uses localhost port 9000 btw.

its now at 62 handles (~12megs) and steady upon reboot.

when i start SS manually from ST, it starts both the slim and mysql
processes, BUT the services seem to stay off. i assume thats the way
its supposed to be.

the ST handles grow to about 102 and stay steady, (and ~14megs).
however, as an aside, the IE window is opening to a blank page again.

in any case, ST seems ok.

i played a local file and then shutdown SS (via ST) to see if the mysql
process would also shutdown, (this is what Dan says should happen in the
beta forum)

mysqld.exe did NOT shutdown. slim.exe did.

so it seems some issues remain, but solid progress nonetheless.

does anyone know why someone would want those things to run as services
rather than processes? is it a security/users thing?

i typically try to not use any services i don't need, and just use
things as processes. so i was wondering what the reasoning was?

Re: [slim] MP3Gain, MP3Tag, iTunes craziness

2007-02-25 Thread eschurr

After some experimentation, I am confused and a bit skeptical of what
i've read.

My goal is to modify my MP3 files to play at a consistent volume in my
Squeezebox as well as my iPod without using ReplayGain. I want to know
how to operate the MP3Gain GUI to do that.

one of the postings says that by hitting the "track analysis" button in
MP3Gain it will modify the volume bits but not write ReplayGain tags.
to write those tags, the posting says, you need to hit the TrackGain
button.

however, after experimentation, i find that hitting Track Analysis does
nothing except report the difference between the file's current volume
and the target volume. the only way to implement the change is to hit
the ReplayGain button -- which alters the volume in Squeezebox playback
EVEN WITHOUT USING SQUEEZEBOX'S VOLUME ADJUSTMENT (TRACK GAIN).

Can anyone confirm or correct this -- please?

Re: [slim] Slimserver is woeful on Windows

2007-02-25 Thread MrSinatra

i'm just curious...

but can't SS run on the NAS? or is it limited to just a select few NAS
boxes?

wouldn't it be neat if you had an all in one box solution, (ie, ss,
nas, sb = one box) and had a color remote to see what you were doing?

the only drawback there i think would be in routing the audio from your
stereo to the box in another room, if you thought it necessary. fiber
could do it though.

anyway, i'm just wondering why you aren't running SS on the nas. -mdw

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread MrSinatra

bpa,

thx again. i should mention though that it wasn't the handles that got
me 'worked up,' but rather the times i'd come back to my computer to
find slimtray at 68megs and unresponsive. i didn't even know about the
handles issue till after that.

thx for not tackling me, and tackling the problem. i do appreciate
it.

without cause. tone is a very subjective standard, especially on a msg
board, and imo, i don't see anything to object to in my "tone."
certainly nothing personal, and nothing directed at any individual, (at
least not at first, until someone attacked me).

sounds to me like now you're just grasping at straws, since there is no
there, there. instead, we'll just attack you not on what you said, but
on our subjective impressions of our feelings about what you said.

straw man. i asked why isn't it done in C? i didn't say do it in C.
u apparently can't tell the difference. read the whole thread, see the
evolution of the convo.

and whats really funny about this whole thing, is i didn't even bring
up C first! jjzolx did. be sure you have enough wood to burn him at

i didn't offer a solution, i asked a question.

and i still don't have an answer to it. why is the current way of
doing slimtray, better than doing it in C, IF jjzolx is correct about
what he says in #5, and i have no reason to doubt him?

is the question itself impermissible? how liberal [small l] an

wow.

thats nonsense, pure and simple.

first off, i asked a question, but even if i had suggested a solution,
its not what you claim it is, ie. 'rude and arrogant.'

do you people who feel this way ever leave your house?

i really don't care what those of you who have a problem with me think.
i just wish you'd PM it. how is what you're doing benefitting anyone?

and the question still remains, why is the current solution for
slimtray, a by definition windows only app, the best one, given the
problems with it, whatever they may be?

its just a question.

I wrote a SS plugin and a 'Lirc Junction box' script. The A/V signal is
mixed with the TV cable signal that goes to all 4 TV's in the house, so
that MythTV is just another channel. Every TV has a SB3 nearby.

The closest I've come to documentation (from another post in this forum):

The latest plugin is available here:
http://a213-84-196-8.adsl.xs4all.nl/slim2lirc/Lirc.pm
The 'Lirc junction box' application can be found here:
http://a213-84-196-8.adsl.xs4all.nl/slim2lirc/lircjb

You start the lircjb (from /etc/rc.local or manually)

lircjb -l -p 12345 /dev/lircd &

You copy the Lirc.pm plugin to the slimserver Plugin directory and
restart slimserver. Lirc.pm will be sending IR codes it receives over
UDP port 12345 to lircjb.

At this time you should be able to run 'irw' and see the slimremote
buttons you press being echoed. Note: Lirc.pm only captures and
retransmits button presses when a SqueezeBox is off (standby) or when
you've selected 'Lirc Remote' from the Plugin menu.

Now you must edit the mythtv .lircrc file to tell mythtv what buttons to
react to and what to do when they are pressed. Note that Lirc.pm only
forwards codes it recognizes. At the moment that means the slimdevices
remote, but the code mapping can be changed at the end of the Lirc.pm file.

Peter

another appreciated response, however at this point, i feel it necessary

constructive:

but what if it is a bug, not a support issue?

the thrust of this post seems to be 'don't files bugs, call support.'

well, i have filed bugs and they were bugs, not support issues.

ChrisOwens;182965 Wrote:

i absolutely can see where it could become overwhelming for the bug
system when users take their genuine support issues there, which are
not bugs. i definitely see that.

but this just gets back to the human element... if when a user files a
bug, a human were to read it at SD and respond, i'd bet most of the
mischaracterized bug reports could be filtered out right then, and
referred to support.

i know in my case, the 3 bugs i have filed are indeed bugs, and that
doesn't include a 4th bug that i did try to take thru support, with
extremely disappointing results. luckily, after about 6 months, i was
able to make headway with andyg here on the board, but it is merely a
workaround, the bug still exists. (more on that in a bit)

ChrisOwens;182965 Wrote:

sure...

but what about when you can't duplicate it thru no fault of the user?
yet it is a SD bug?

my jpg bug was just like that.

but what really disappointed me was the SD reaction to the net radio
streaming bug.

when 6.5 (or whatever it was) introduced non-proxied direct streaming
of net radio directly to the SB, it made my SB useless to me as i use
it to listen to one stream 90% of the time i use it at all.

unless i'm mistaken, i was the first person to bring this issue to SD's
attention, which i did first here on the boards.

as time passed, i got nowhere, and the constant focus on me, and my
setup, my microwave, and everything else got ridiculous. i realize
those items must be eliminated first, but when i had done so and it was
time to move the focus from me to SD, i found it was IMPOSSIBLE to do
so.

when i did eventually try support directly, the response was horrible.
there is no other way to describe it. i can forward you the emails if
you like, but it was no help at all. and i'd be shocked if they filed
a bug based on my situation.

the situation, which i eventually gave up on as it was like banging my
head against the wall, only got resolved when other board posters
started posting the same issues i was having. at that point i jumped
back in.

thats when andyg, (about whom i want to be clear, i have no personal
complaints), enacted a workaround so streams could be forced to proxy.
but that took at least a minimum of 6 months, and other peoples
complaints, to enact.

in that time, i barely used my SB at all.

so going thru support, was a dismal deadend. i think you should be
aware that bad experiences like that make people not want to even try
support.

and it is also worth nothing, that the bug still exists! but is there
a bug filed for it??? i don't know...

the point is, i must now have a computer on to listen to my stream.
this is not the way it should be. i should be able to listen to my
stream without a computer on. but is there a bug filed or being worked
on to fix this? i have no idea, and support did nothing to help.

so chris, i'm sorry if i sound like a crank, and again i want to be
clear that i think andyg does the best job he can do given the
circumstances, but having said that, SD does need to pick it up.

in closing i just want to reiterate:

1. a human response in 24 hours of filing a bug is really needed.

that would be a great time to refer bugs to support that SD likely
considers support issues, not bugs.

2. after that, within lets say 5 business days or so, a response from
SD should come saying they were, or were not, able to reproduce the
bug,

Careful...that will probably work in this case but it may not always
work. Certain SlimServer versions are paired with a certain firmware
version, using combinations outside of this may produce unpredictable
behavior.

In this case it'll probably work fine as the firmware changes affect
only Rhapsody, but don't try this with the latest firmware and
something before SlimServer 6.5.0.

I'll add a comment to the bug report. The CPAN (

I was thinking of adding an option to ST to allow users to kill MySqld
as well as Slimserver. I think the "problem" is Windows - I think it
may not follow process ownership like Linux. In Linux killing
Slimserver - kills mysqld - it doesn't look like that in Windows. First
I'd need to look at the Slimserver code to see if explicitly tries to
kill MySqld on shutdown.

What bothers people is the tone in which you present your views. But

But since you clearly seem to feel that you're smarter than anyone else

Or you could drop the updated firmware into the Firmware/ directory on

Unless you're streaming Internet radio, it shouldn't be affected.

However maybe it's your modem or router that's disconnecting you, and
maybe that's having an impact? Perhaps one of them has its DHCP server

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-02-25 Thread EnochLight

-* What version of Vista are you running? (Home Premium, Ultimate, etc.)
Also specify if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.-

I'm running Ultimate 32-bit.

-* What version of Slimserver have you installed?-

Right now I'm running 6.5.2 - 11357, but it appears that there has been
a firmware update as of 2/25/2007 because whenever I log back and forth
between Rhapsody and Slimserver it asks to update. Every time.

-* What error messages are you getting? (if any)-

None right now!

-* What additional Security software are you using? (Firewalls,
Antivirus, etc.)-

I'm running my UAC, but I turned off my firewall. I run a hardware
firewall through my router though.

-* What happens if you try running Slim.exe manually from a DOS prompt?
(Cut and paste any errors.)-

Err - haven't tried that yet. For now, Slimserver 6.5.2 works rock
solid fine with Vista 32-bit Ultimate - except that I can't get the web
interface to automatically start running when I restart my computer.
Even then, after I get back to my desktop I have to double-click my
shortcut and tell Vista to allow it to run. Can't quite figure out how
to get UAC to ignore stuff I don't mind starting.

*shrugs*

All that said, prior to this firmware update I was having trouble with
Rhapsody - kept locking up after it played for a while. Sometimes I
could get a few songs to play and it would lock up; other times it
would play for an hour then lock up. But since this firmware update
all seems to be playing fine with Rhapsody now. I don't think this was
a Vista issue, though, since Squeeze network is independent of what OS
you are running.

[slim] Ogg streams played back too slow?

2007-02-25 Thread peterw

After an initial test, today I decided to try my Icecast/IceS setup to
stream music from the turntable beside the Slimserver host to a
Squeezebox.

It was awful -- too slow. With Michael Herger's MusicInfo screensaver
(thanks!) I could see my SB2 (firmware 71, connecting to a 6.5.1
server) running out of buffer. Every 1 or 2 seconds it'd lose another
.1 or .2 seconds of buffer. And the pitch was off due to the slowness.

The Network Test plugin shows my WiFi is stable (100%) to at least 2000
kbps for the SB I was using. I tried Ogg bitrates from 300k all the way
down to 64k, and all played back slow.

Then I switched to Darkice and 320k MP3 constant bitrate. I
occasionally see the Squeezebox dip into the buffer (change from 0.0 to
0.1), but it always recovers back to 0.0 seconds promptly. Speed and
pitch seem fine.

Has anyone else had similar problems with Ogg streaming?

Thanks,

Peter

P.S. A hint on encoding: IceS took 15-20% of my CPU (Athlon64 throttled
to 1 GHz) to encode Ogg (64k-500k). Darkice takes only 3-6% CPU when
configured for 320k CBR MP3 (do not include a "quality" setting in the
darkice config).

My setup is wired, linked through a gigabit switch, pc, switch and nv
have jumbo frames enabled and set to 9014. Network connects at gigabit
so it doesn't look like there are any connection speed issues. Same
connection via a Linux box and a rescan puts the NAS under the pump,
whereas under a windows rescan you'd hardly know it was happening.

In both Windows ans Linux I had/had Slimserver running on a PC. The
ReadyNAS NV would die a horrible death if I installed slimserver to the
nas and told it to scan ~50k files. I don't have enough faith in the NV
to even contemplate that prior to having a complete backup of the NAS.

I guess I was hoping that something would have changed in recent builds
of 6.5.2 for Windows. I would love to go back to Linux but had a drive
hardware fail on that box and I'm still recovering data from the drive
which is a slow process. Once that's complete I will most definitely
be returning to Linux.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the NV, unless of course
others using other NAS devices are experiencing similar performance
issues under Windows.

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread bpa

Using the latest ActiveState tools, I've tried to rebuild SlimTray.exe
exactly as 6.5.1 - however the resulting version didn't work because of
the changes to libraries also latest ActiveState is build 820 and I
think 6.5.1 was built using 819.

So I've patched SlimTray.pl as per my previous posts for GetProcessPid
and the port 9000 bug. I rebuilt SlimTray - it works and doesn't leak
handles on my system.

If you want to try my patched version you can find it here.

http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/SlimTrayexe.ZIP
1. Stop slimserver and slimtray
2. Backup your existing SlimTray.exe in case you want to revert.
3. Download and unzip my patched version into temporary area
4. Replace current SlimTray.exe in the server directory.
5. Run SlimTray from server directory or restart Windows.

Usual caveats apply and to be on the safe side run virus checker etc.

If there are no problems I'll post the patches to Developers.

Ok one last question, is there a limit on how many favorites you can ad
to the squeezenetwork
Thanks Mads.

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread bpa

The problem is in SlimTray code - the routine ProcessID. It uses a
routine called GetProcessPid in Win32::Process::List.

Changes were made to the Win32::Process::List in June 06 and
GetProcessPid no longer returns -1 if the process is not running.
These changes to the return behavior are not documented anywhere and
even the online CPAN documentation hasn't changed and is inaccurate.

I'll do a more complete check of SlimTray before posting to bugzilla.

The code in SlimTray.pl should be changed to the following:

Code:

  # Was below
  # my $pid = ($p->GetProcessPid(qr/^slim\.exe$/))[0];
  # return $pid ;

  # Should be
my $pid = ($p->GetProcessPid(qr/^slim\.exe$/))[1];
return $pid if ( defined ($pid) ) ;
return -1;

Do you mean has anything new emerged since you asked the same question
a month ago? Why not go back to running SlimServer under Linux?

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31844

My experience (and apparently yours as well): A Windows SlimServer with
an Infrant NAS for file storage is a BAD/SLOW/BROKEN combination.
There's something going on there with network file access between the
two systems that just doesn't jive. Whether the issue is limited to
file shares on just the Infrant system or is more general is something
probably worth looking into.

File a bug report and maybe someone will look into it.

The only thing missing in SqueezeNetwork is the ability to upload your
own library ;)

basically yes. SqueezeNetwork is essentially a global slimserver. You
just need to set up the "favorites" that you want through that web site
and they are available any time you want. Eventually, slimserver and
squeezenetwork will have much more integration, allowing you to save
the favorites from one to load into the other, and possibly more in
future.

They may come to your door, but they won't prosecute you unless they
find more evidence. Of course, the hacker may leave some evidence on
your disk, but that would be a personal attack against you, which is
possible if you have enemies. It sounds unlikely to me that child porn
enthousiasts would possess such technical knowledge and go through all
that physical work. If you're that good, you'd better set up a botnet to
do your dirty work and control them over TOR from the comfort of your
own home.

Thanks
Does this mean that the squeezebox connects the squeezenetwork, and play
the predefined stations,so the computer is only needed to setting up the
stations?
Mads.
