Re: [slim] Any New Squeezebox coming soon?

2007-05-02 Thread bludragon

A couple of possibilities exist here:

1. A cheaper squeezebox, probably with some compromise on sound
quality, and maybe the display.

2. An upgraded squeezebox, at a similar price, maybe with 24/96k
support, and an improved DAC.

The squeezebox is already nice enough though that I just ordered my 2nd

[slim] SB3 failing to connect to Slim

2007-05-02 Thread chris . mason

Hi all,

I've been running SlimServer 6.5.2 from a while ago - think it had
firmware 72 with it.
I've had some problems with stuttering on my sb3 recently - the display
stutters, as does the audio.

My SB3 is connected wireless by the way.

Before you say to check my wireless connectivity, I have, there are no
problems there...

Anyway, I decided to upgrade to the latest nightly three days ago, that
came with a firmware upgrade - 81 I think.

Since then, my SB3 won't connect to SLimserver anymore. Tries to , but
then fails, and switches itself off. I've tried this wirelessly, and
wired, no joy.
I've also tried a completely vanilla 6.5.2 install with no plugins, no
joy.
I've tried going back to my last working installation - doesn't work.
I've tried a fresh 6.5.1 installation, that doesn't work either.

I can only guess that the latest firmware has screwed up something in
my SB3.

Does anyone know how to down-rev the firmware? I've switched on
auto-update on the SB3, but it makes no difference. I've also tried
various resets - press 1 while powering up, press Add while powering
up.

I'm open to any suggestionsI need my Squeezebox!!

Chris.

Re: [slim] Gapless playback not working?

2007-05-02 Thread Hercules

I had an interesting experience with pcutmp3 earlier this week.

I used it to cut up a mix album into separate mp3 files, and then added
the files to my SlimServer music directory, and rescanned.

When I tried to play back the new files, my Squeezebox seemed to work
ok, but there was no audio, and the playback froze, in that the
progress bar wouldn't move forward.

And once that had happened, the Squeezebox wouldn't play back any other
music, even though I could still use all the menus etc.

The only way to correct the problem was to reboot the Squeezebox. If I
then tried to play back different music (to the newly-split mp3 files)
then everything worked ok. But as soon as I tried to play the new
files, it would freeze again.

It was definitely caused by the newly-split mp3 files, because when I
removed them - or just didn't use them - it all started working ok
again!

So, to get to my point, I came to the conclusion that pcutmp3 was doing
something to the mp3 files that somehow made them incompatible with my
Squeezebox/SlimServer.

 plugin rather useless

Well I managed to get it to spit this out:
Could not open /etc/slimserver-strings.txt for writing: Permission
denied

I'm running slimserver on Gentoo linux, using the official gentoo
package.

Slim::Utils::Prefs::preferencesPath() returns /etc

slimserver does not have permission to create a file in /etc

This behaviour is correct. The problem is that your plugin is wrongly
assuming it can create and modify a file in preferencesPath(), which in
my setup (and probably other linux setups) it can't.

When I manually created /etc/slimserver-strings.txt and gave slimserver
permission to alter it, the plugin started working as expected for
built-in strings (the server's still ignoring the custom strings for
plugins, but at least /etc/slimserver-strings.txt contains the
requested modifications).

I'd suggest adding an error message in the web interface that explains
the problem and suggests manually creating the file. Or at least modify
the installation instructions to mention this problem.

Cheers

Sure, will do so later tonight.

For info, I did raise a support call (070430-002964) for my original
problem about the Squeezebox not playing back music, but closed it
after working out what the problem was. The person working on the call
was very helpful!

Thanks for the recommendations for other splitters - I'll check them

Funnily enough, I chose the pcutmp3 splitter deliberately! I did so
because I had read glowing reports on hydrogenaudio about its ability
to split single mp3 files in a way that would guarantee gapless
playback.

Re: [slim] DSL vs Cable

2007-05-02 Thread GlennT

I've also had both. In addition to depending on the ISP, much can
depend on your individual situation.

Our home is more than 80 years old, and the phone lines coming into the
house, and through the basement, is quite old. During bad storms, the
connection is *sometimes* sporadic. Also, the actual thoroughput of
DSL can vary greatly, depending on your distance from the switching
station (CO). We're actually more than 1000ft out of SBC's range, and
although Earthlink is simply a resellar of SBC services, they somehow
can break the 14k ft SBC rule. Our speed isn't the best, but it's
more than good enough, given the low cost. Streaming radio has not
been an issue.

Comcast broadband was great, though expensive, and offered far more
bandwidth than we needed. Plus, I wanted to get Dish Network for some
channels I had been yearning for. At any rate, the ONLY problem I ever
had with Comcast was with the splitter outdoors. To get the best
possible signal to the modem and keep amps out of the path, a 2 way
splitter is often installed at the head end; often outdoors, as in my
case. If you get the optimal 15db (IIRC), 7.5db goes to the modem, and
7.5db goes to your TVs. Ours would fail about once a year, due to
exposure to the elements. I never had the time or energy to move it
indoors, or install a weather proof box.

Both provide solid service, with faults that are specific to our
situation.

Thanks for the feedback!

1) I just spent a bit of time hacking the Lazy Search plugin. After a
while I tried the original plugin - it already works fine for me, with
no modifications at all to the plugin! This is with LazySearch2 v2.3
for slimserver 6.5.x, and the second version of my modified modules.
What behaviour are you seeing?

2) Yes, a server-wide option would be good. I don't have time to do
this now, but I'll definitely want to add it in. The problem is that
I'd probably want to submit it as a patch to the official tree in order
to avoid needing to re-write it for different versions. This would
therefore require a lot more testing.

Re: [slim] RadioTime: security/privacy suggestions

2007-05-02 Thread peterw

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34909

Question: My opinion of this is...

- I don't use RadioTime, and I think this is OK
- I don't use RadioTime, but that sounds like a problem
- I use RadioTime, and I don't care about these flaws
- I use RadioTime, and this bothers me at least a bit

Hi, radiobill. Quick question: do you work for RadioTime, or have you?

radiobill;199017 Wrote:
The risk is much lower -- another user might guess a RadioTime account
name to listen to favorite stations. But the user would not be able to
 identify your email

That's not true. When you submit a valid RadioTime username in the
forgot password page (http://radiotime.com/SendPassword.aspx), the
web site will display a message like Your password has been sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], revealing the user's email address.

or your identity, nor would they be able to make any changes to your
RadioTime account. Since you don't enter a password for the SlimServer
or the SqueezeNetwork the password is never at risk

See below for more discussion of the password risk. My concern is how
the passwords are stored and processed in the RadioTime system,
including those of RadioTime users who never use the SlimServer or
SqueezeNetwork integration.

, much less the email used to register.

Registration with RadioTime.com is secure and passwords entered into
radiotime.com and the RedButton TiVo-style Windows software are
 protected.

That's also not true. I don't know about the RedButton software, but
the login process on the web site is not secure. The page that displays
the login form and processes login attempts
(http://radiotime.com/Login.aspx) is not secure. Nor is the page that's
used to set up an account
(http://radiotime.com/Enroll/QuickEnroll.aspx). RadioTime does appear
to use secure web pages (https) when soliciting credit card
information, as it is almost certainly required to do by its credit
card processing contracts.

Obviously you'll want to use a lower risk password for casual sites like
RadioTime, as compared to a bank account or accounts with sensitive
 information.

Certainly it's a best practice for users to use better passwords for
less casual sites like online banking. And if SqueezeNetwork required
a user's RadioTime password to work (as it requires Live365 passwords),
that should clearly suggest to the user that a lower risk password
would be appropriate. But not all RadioTime users use the SN
integration and, more importantly, it's also a best practice for site
designers not to store passwords in cleartext or in an easily
recoverable format, and not to send cleartext passwords via unencrypted
channels like email -- but that's what RadioTime has done. Below is more
detail on my findings, since you seem intent on questioning not only the
importance of RadioTime's flaws, but the existence of the flaws.

There might be some even more interesting (frightening!) combination
attack possibilities. For instance, if RadioTime has not built good
anti-CSRF measures into the portion of the web site that updates a
user's profile, an attacker who knew a victim's email address might be
able to write a simple attack that would send a RadioTime user's
username and password to the attacker without the victim's knowledge.

-Peter

Suggestions for RadioTime:

RadioTime:

* Devise a new forgot password system that does not depend on
recovering
the cleartext password and convert every single stored user
password
to a strongly salted hash.
* Modify your forgot password web interface so that it does not
display
Your password has been sent to + the user's email address
* Modify your web applications so that https is used at least for
displaying
login forms and password maintenance forms and for processing logins,

password changes, and any other user requests that include users'
passwords.
* Modify your APIs so that passwords are required and drop the old
APIs.
* Make sure your non-web login API uses https/SSL/TLS.
* Reassess your system design in light of industry best practice and
documents such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard,
the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) guidelines, etc.

Privacy Issues

RadioTime will provide account information without a password.

Passwords are not required for obtaining information about
a RadioTime user. RadioTime has an application programming
interface (API) for accessing a user's favorites and local
radio programming. This API does not require the user's password.
By submitting a username to this API, an attacker could learn
roughly where a RadioTime user lives, and what programming interests
that user. RadioTime asserts that it

slimserver folder before upgrading? Not sure if it's necessary anymore,
but at one time seemed to be a problem for people. Is it possible one
of the processes was still running while you were installing over, even
after 'stopping slimserver' or 'exiting' using the tray icon?

Can you connect to squeezenetwork? Maybe try disabling firewalls and
anti-virus(?). These are random guesses, if you didn't notice :-)

If a problem w/ SB was impeding my music fix, I'd probably contact
support directly.

I just realised the firmware reversion is moot point right now, while my

Do the debug messages I listed give any indication to the issue?

Re: [slim] Slimserver hangs after remote streaming?

2007-05-02 Thread ncpl

I'm just home. The server is hung again (I was streaming earlier).

WMP is v10. Does that do anything to the 9000 port ?

I'd like to solve this without having to explain to the wife how to
reboot the service.

Is there anything else I should be investigating ?

TIA

Ok, how about a factory reset? Press and hold ADD while powering on.

You might also try going through the setup again and setting teh

Re: [slim] DSL vs Cable

2007-05-02 Thread AubreyCTurnerJr

nicketynick;198944 Wrote:
I understand that in some areas, Verizon is rolling out FTTH (fibre to
the home). If you're lucky enough to be in one of those areas, I would
think cable would be hard-pressed to outperform fibre, wouldn't it?

I happen to be from Keller, TX, where Verizon did trials on the 'FiOS'
(http://www22.verizon.com/Content/ConsumerFiOS/) service (that's their
name for FTTH). As soon as I was hooked up I dropped the cable modem
service from Charter, as it couldn't compete in terms of the bandwidth
I get for the price. I'm on the 15/2 plan (15Mb down, 2Mb up) and have
been happy with it. Since I also have phone service I get a small
discount, so they're charging me $44.95/month. Charter was charging me
$39.99/month for 3Mb/256Kb. The upstream difference has been the most
useful to me, as I have to upload documents for my job. It also
doesn't hurt when I want to stream full-quality music while I'm away
from home, either.

With cable I had to reboot the cable modem every couple of weeks for
some reason, and had regular outages (seemed like about once a month).
With FiOS I've had only two or three outages in the past 2 and 1/2 years
(none of which laster longer than an hour).

Anyhow, aside from your provider's reliability, the main issues are
likely to be latency between your provider and the source server and
the server being overloaded. Even though I have 15M/2M service, the
network between me and the target really makes a difference (see
attached images; Fort Worth is a short hop with low latency, while
Miami had about 120ms latency).

I stream net radio to my SB1 almost continuously during the day (it
keeps me company while I work) and have done so for many hours at a
time on my SB2 and SB3, depending on where I am in the house. In all
that usage, I've found that most problems are either the server being
overloaded, or my neighbor's 2.4GHz phone (my SB2 is in a corner of my
house and if my neighbor sits outside talking on the phone it sometimes
interrupts the connection).

In fairness, though, when Charter's internet was working it was more
than sufficient to stream net radio to my Squeezeboxes. But it wasn't
capable of maintaining sufficient upstream bandwidth for even a 128Kbps
stream (despite supposedly being 256) if I wanted to access Slimserver
remotely.

TD,

I've had to replace fuses in my Rotel RB 1070 on a few occasions from
being careless with the speaker side spades while still connected to

Power off 24 hrs.

The BK is not as accessible and therefore would not want to be forced

Aside from that...problem solved.

Compared to my old PC SS setup, my new NAS SS solution is far quieter
(no fans and a quiet HDD), far smaller and was cheap. The first 2
factors are very important if the server has to be located in the same
room as the SB. The third is important if you have a family to support
and a mortgage to pay.

The fact is takes a couple of hours to do a fresh scan my music

Re: [slim] Slim 6.5.1 just hangs- will not run

2007-05-02 Thread rmassey

Well I decided my Windows 2003 server was just running slow in general
(Windoze Bloat). I have been running three years on the original
install mostly without problems, but lately it's been getting slower
and slower. So time for a reinstall from scratch.

I reinstalled today and after all the MS updates, Active dir, Domain
creation, users, network share, printers, blah, blah, blah I
installed todays version of Slim 6.5.2 - So far things seem to be
running well, but it's still indexing my 29,xxx (flac + mp3)
collection. Fingers crossed that I have overcome whatever gremlins
were causing me problems.

One interesting thing I found in the Windows Services UI, was a bit
about if the service fails to start, set it to restart, 2nd failure ...
set to restart, third failure... set to restart. I did this to see if
it overcomes any failed services for Slim and/or the MySQL service too.

[slim] Radiotime and Realaudio

2007-05-02 Thread wr420

Hi
I have alienbbc installed and working (bbc and other rtsp streams work
fine) but I can't play radiotime stations that stream in realaudio
format. Is this more to do with radiotime just not allowing it because
of realaudio licensing? Is there a workaround for this? I tried
sniffing(url snooper) but it uses an embedded flash player and the url
must be in the swf cause it doesn't show any media related urls.
The particular station is alice 97.3 in the San Francisco Bay
Area(94103). I could personally care less about the station but it
would sure help with WAF.

Thanks

2007-05-02 Thread radiobill

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: My opinion of this is...

- I don't use RadioTime, and I think this is OK
- I don't use RadioTime, but that sounds like a problem
- I use RadioTime, and I don't care about these flaws
- I use RadioTime, and this bothers me at least a bit

Peter, thanks for the great feedback. I do work for RadioTime, but not
in a technical role.

We've tried to balance security against ease of use, since our site is
about finding radio, ease of use and simple implementation typically
win. But we'll revisit some of the practices below.

Yes, a malicious user could guess a username, then request a password
reset and then discover an email address. We began displaying the email
and clear text password retrieval because a fair number of users would
forget the account used or misspelled the email, and then get
completely frustrated and stuck in a loop.

Within the radiotime system passwords are not stored in clear but
encrypted.

You are correct, basic registration is not secure, only paid
registration.

RadioTime support had deleted your account as requested, we don't know
what email address they replied to (if at all). We intend to allow
users to delete their own account.

We'll add some text to the signup and privacy policy saying passwords
may be sent in clear text.

Re: [slim] Any good tuning guides for slimserver ? Very slow browse response times on Linkstatio

arguments on MySql or Perl. I have some experience with both pieces of

respond to a browse command (browse music folder being the slowest)
 under any normal circumstance. snip
Basic question here: are you referring to browsing via the web
interface or browsing via the remote? I have a similar arrangement,
running slimserver 6.5.1 on a gigabit LinkStation with 4000 tracks
(3978 to be exact). I get pretty much instantaneous response with the
SB remote, whereas the web UI is sluggish. It's not quite as bad as the
10 seconds you cite, but it's slow.

Rendering those pages for the web UI puts a fair strain on the
LinkStation processor. If that's where you're having the delays, you
can possibly reduce them by using a minimalist skin like Handheld. If
you're getting such long browse times with the remote then something is
definitely wrong, although I don't know where to steer you from there.

As a side note, I could be wrong, but I think you'll always find
Browse music folder to be slower because it's not using the MySQL
database built from the tag info. It's traversing the directory tree.
