[slim] PPC Mac Mini Linux Advice for Media Server
I would like to use my old PPC Mac Mini as a media server. Ideally I would like to boot it with some sort of barebones Linux distro from an external firewire (or USB2) drive. That way the Mac OS X install on the main disk will remain untouched. I would like to run Slimserver, Firefly DAAP Server, a UPnP server, and some sort of video server for my DVD ISOs. My questions: 1) Can you boot linux from an external firewire drive without messing with OSX on a PPC Mac Mini? 2) If yes, could anyone recommend a good light distro? 3) Could anyone recommend some sort of server that will work for DVD ISOs? Re: [slim] BBC in Australia?
It always helps to tell us what Mac, and what version of Mac OS, what version of SlimServer, and also in this case what version of mplayer you have. If you look at some of the threads, mostly in the third-party plugins forum, you'll see that the version of mplayer may be crucial. I wrote most of the original instructions for installation of AlienBBC on a Mac, and I didn't have access to an Intel machine, so may well have suggested a version of mplayer that isn't suitable. One of the things that you can check is whether mplayer itself works ok. You have to run it using Terminal. As far as I know, most of the BBC programmes can be listened to worldwide, but not all of them. Because of the current problems, you need to check using a browser- which you have done - that what you want to listen to is available. -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37208 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you take some time, OSX actually strips down pretty good. I have a dedicated PPC mini that runs MythTV, I have replaced the finder with myth, so about the only sign of it even being a mac is the bootup logo. I use this as a video server for my DVD ISO's, it works well in that capacity. mythtv.org is actually a good source of info on running a stripped down mini. They have howto's on running a small Linux install on it, as well as booting Linux over the network on it. -Chris ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] sorting FLAC MP3 files
I'm just mentioning this since this question seems to come up once in a while. I personally doesn't feel the solution described below is good, but I thought it was worth mentioning. It is possible to use the Multi Library plugin to define a virtual library that does something similar to this. You can define the library by using the Download more libraries link in the Multi Library plugin web interface and choose the Best format library type. The virtual library will detect a flac/mp3 track to be the same if they have the same: track title, album title and track number. The disadvantages with this solution is at least the following: 1. If there is an album that consist of some tracks in mp3 format, some tracks in flac format and some tracks in both format, the result will be that you get two albums in the SlimServer interface. One album with all the flac files and one album with all the mp3 files which don't have flac counterpart. If both the flac and mp3 files for a specific album is in the same directory I don't think you will have this problem. 2. You will have to use Custom Browse for all the browse menus, the standard SlimServer browse menus will contain the mp3 files you don't want. 3. Saved playlists will play the files they refer to, so if you have refered to a mp3 file it will be played even if there is a corresponding flac file. If you would rather skip these mp3's than play them, you can use the Custom Skip plugin to do this. 4. Random playlists using the standard Random Mix plugin will play mp3 files even if you have a corresponding flac file. You can avoid this by using the SQL Playlist plugin instead. If you like to use the standard Random Mix and would like skip these mp3's instead of playing them, you can use the Custom Skip plugin to do this. I don't think you should hope that this ever will be standard SlimServer functionality. There are just to many different things that can go wrong depending on how your files are arranged and tagged, so I think it would just cause a gigantic support headache. Due to this I suspect that Logitech would like to avoid going this route. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and RandomPlayList plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37176 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well
After scanning results are not correct. Are you using the latest SlimServer? There's an update script available on the SlimCD which will do this for you. Please verify, if you see the same problems with the latest version. If you still see them, we'll have to turn on some debugging to know what's going on. This can become a problem (or at least a big task...) with your large collection. The log file might grow largely. If your free disk space is becoming low, shut down slimserver. To turn on the logging, go to Server Settings/Debugging and turn on d_info and d_scan. Watch the log file (/tmp/slimserver.log or similar) for failures when reading files. Do you see anything? If you have playlists in your music folder, try moving them elsewhere. Make sure they don't contain inexistent filepaths. One other thing to look at: SlimCD comes with a lot of plugins preinstalled, which you probably won't need at all. Do remove these plugins, too, before rescanning, as some of them do their own magic during scans (LazySearch, CustomBrowse etc.). Try to get started with a lean installation. Once everything's fine you can still add back the plugins you want. Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thus it has a mixture of MP3 and FLAC. Slimserver is pointed at the Best Quality folder, so you have all your music available to you. [slim] Network range problem
Forgive me if this is a common problem, but I have searched and not managed to find anything. It's difficult to know what to search for in this case. I recently changed the router on my home network, and found that I could not connect my Squeezebox to the router using a wired connection. Wireless, it works fine. I tried all manner of troubleshooting, but no solution. Then I found the following thread in a forum: http://www.filesaveas.co.uk/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1167302605/2 This suggests that the Squeezebox has a firmware bug preventing it recognizing a network range *.*.1.* when plugged directly into the router. Sure enough, my new router is operating in a network range *.*.1.*. My old network was *.*.0.*. I have not yet tried changing the network range on my router because I'd rather not break the network for now, having just given all PCs and printers a fixed *.*.1.* address... So I'd just like to know if: (a) this is a known issue, and (b) if it has been fixed in any recent version of the firmware. I can't find a reference to it in the changelog. I am still using v6.3.1 because it works without any issues (up to now). -- jdk jdk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9569 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37219 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the quick reply. Are you using the latest SlimServer? I had updated slimserver Just after i first downloaded slimcd a week ago. No Playlists SlimCD comes with a lot of plugins preinstalled, which you probably won't need at all. All other pluging are not going to be used. I will turn on debugging and see if that shows any abnormalities. It will take a while to get thu another scan as the first scan usually take 7-8 hours before returning results and my full time job gets in the way of playing with this new equipment. [slim] Configuring SB3 and music server
Dear All, After enjoying the SB3 for many months, I am now entering phase II. Currently I have SS setup on my home pc which is wired into a wireless router. SB3 is connected wireless in a different room. My Plan : Build a HTPC onto which I add SS (PC in lounge with SB3). SB3 connectes wireless to router, HTPC is connected wired to SB3, so I can use Wake-on-Lan to wake up HTPC. HTPC currently has a wireless card. Will this setup work? Cheers BT PS HTPC is built and is silent, so if this setup can be used I just need to add the HD's and setup SS. -- BigTony We're Only In It For The Music! www.zappateers.com BigTony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10638 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37223 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Pardon me - a volume issue
Remote controls are not a good app for rechargeable batteries. Get some alkalines and you won't have to change them for at least a year even if you use the remote everyday. NiMH have a self discharge rate that is higher than the remote control's discharge rate. Even if the remote sits unused, rechargeables will be dead in a couple weeks. If they get too low you'll have a problem recharging them. Use rechargeables for apps that demand a lot of current- digital cameras, etc. TD -- tyler_durden tyler_durden's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2701 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37202 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Updated firmware, now SB3 won't start
I've not been using my SB3 for a while and having moved into a new flat I decided today to set it all up. So I reinstalled Slimserver (6.5.3), scanned all my music files and then connected and plugged in the SB3. It connected up to my slimserver fine but then recommended a firmware update. So I dutifully held down brightness on the remote and set it updating. It then gave some message like restarting, this may take a minute and the display went blank never to return to life. I waited 10 minutes and tried removing/reinserting the power lead but to no avail. I also tried holding down power for many seconds, and even holding add upon reinserting the power lead to do a factory reset. Still no luck. I did wonder if the power adapter had fused or something but I do get a red light at the back of the SB3 so it appears to be getting juice. I've just sent a tech support email but in the interim has anyone here heard of anything like this? Re: [slim] Pardon me - a volume issue
TD, Thanks for the information. I'm a green kind of guy and haven't purchased alkalines for many years, and run rechargeables in all of my remotes with long term (over a year) life of a change in those remotes. Actually, I think that the batteries in the Slim remote are still the original from '05 so Michael's idea to refresh them seems like a valid one. Since I'm about to purchase a Harmony remote for the livingroom (already have one in the basement) I'll attempt to suffer through until then with rechargables. Armed with your advice and the fact the I have found a place that recyles alkaline batteries I will switch my remote power source for the 659. Thanks for the advice! Michael -- thanks for the response. I changed my router to the *.*.0.* range, and it didn't solve the problem. Should have tried that before posting, i guess... It's very odd. Does anyone have a pointer on how to remap the buttons or any pointers? With guidance, I could probably figure it out. I have a bryston pre-amp. If this is a wider issue, i.e. you want to use your pre-amp for your TV / DVD etc, then you might want to invest in a universal learning remote - it makes the process much more seamless. I use the Harmony 880, which works amazingly well; pushing one button turns on my amp, turns on the squeezebox, and switches the amp to the right input. Hitting another button turns off the squeezebox, turns on the DVD player and TV, and switches the amp input to DVD. It's a bit spendy, but you can search online for deals, and there are other threads in the forums comparing cheaper harmony models (they all have similar functionality, just different packaging / form factors). And of course there's a world of other universal remotes out there. Cheers, Geoff ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pardon me - a volume issue
I use rechargeable alkalines in my universal remote. I like them because they put out a full 1.5 V rather than the 1.25 V NiMHs do. Also they don't cost any more than regular alkalines, provided you already have a charger. I do have a fairly high infant mortality rate on these things though, but if I can get as little as 1 recharge out of them I'll accept that. Once I weed out the poor ones, the others keep on going. They saves money and you don't have to throw as many out. I charge them once a month. Back on topic, the problem is incredibly specific and you'd be noticing other effects if it was just the remote batteries. Try: - altering the volume using the web interface (if this works then this is the remote) - altering the volume while connected to SqueezeNetwork (if this works then something's up with SlimServer) If neither of these work then it may be a hardware problem. -- Mark Lanctot 'Sean Adams' Response-O-Matic checklist, patent pending!' Re: [slim] Problems with radio pls files
No problem, di.fm I assume? That playlist should work, the only thing that may cause a problem is if the proper content-type is not being returned. A debug log from SlimServer would be helpful since I can't test this myself...I should really get an account I guess. :) Enable the following debug flags: d_scan, d_parse, and d_directstream, then try to play the playlist again, then view /log.txt in your browser. Make sure to x-out the login info on the URLs and paste the results back. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37229 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia 770
when I'm in eye-shot of the SB, I prefer to use the IR remote, but when I am outside, listening to tunes on my back patio, the N770 definitley does the job. For some reason I still have not figured out, it works slower on some skins than on others. When using the default skin, its not too bad, with my music reacting about 0.5 seconds after I click a button. I got it for $130 from Buy.com and have been happy (although not thrilled) I got it. -- Zten Zten's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1810 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Asus Eee PC
I've been eyeing the Eee since I first heard about it, but mainly for use as an ultra portable. I hadn't considered using it for Slimserver. That said, looking at the specs it seems like it could perform the task well enough (900MHz Pentium M, 512MB RAM). I've run Slimserver on similar platforms in the past. I suppose that if Asus manages to hit the price point they mentioned in their presentation that it'd be worth a try, just to see how well it works. -- AubreyCTurnerJr AubreyCTurnerJr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9795 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37215 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 problem running on Apple hardware
Im in Canada, so 1 to 11. It's very reliable, so I'll leave it on 11. Interestingly, the original channel was defaulted to 1 or Auto. I had so many problems, it was driving me crazy. The remote was hanging, while using it. The SB would turn off, loose connection to SlimServer and SqueezeNetwork. Stations would frequently re-buffer or simply stop, often after 1 minute. Now it works as expected! I'm assuming that was the problem, because everything else is set to defaults (802.11n b/g compatible), except it's hard set to WPA/WPA2. -- duraace duraace's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12458 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37065 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia 770
I'm really pleased with mine. It's much better to browse on than the remote (the limited SB screen is a pain for me - not enough characters and/or I have to squint!). Plus it's great for just browsing the internet - the wife likes it so much we might get another! It used to sell for £250 in the UK ($500), and at that price the reviews are justified, but IMO at $130 you really can't go wrong. Just to draw this to a conclusion, I think it's just some bizarre conflict between the Squeezebox and the router. The Squeezebox will connect fine wirelessly. Re: [slim] Nokia 770
One of my good friends from college used this statement to describe a date he'd gone on: well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. I kind of think the Nokia experience is similar. It offers some really nice improvements over using the IR remote (list browsing and cover art are prime examples), but in some other cases (having to wait to connect to wifi, browser delays) it doesn't make the cut. The Nokia tablet is pretty whiz bang cool for some other things though too, so don't discount that. I really love using mine for a personal media player on flights. Also, Canola is fantastic for streaming media directly to the tablet. cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas the Nokia770 skin guy http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
