[slim] PPC Mac Mini Linux Advice for Media Server

2007-07-30 Thread Nikhil

I would like to use my old PPC Mac Mini as a media server. Ideally I
would like to boot it with some sort of barebones Linux distro from an
external firewire (or USB2) drive. That way the Mac OS X install on the
main disk will remain untouched. I would like to run Slimserver, Firefly
DAAP Server, a UPnP server, and some sort of video server for my DVD
ISOs. My questions:

1) Can you boot linux from an external firewire drive without messing
with OSX on a PPC Mac Mini?
2) If yes, could anyone recommend a good light distro?
3) Could anyone recommend some sort of server that will work for DVD
ISOs?

TIA,

Nikhil

Re: [slim] BBC in Australia?

2007-07-30 Thread danco

It always helps to tell us what Mac, and what version of Mac OS, what
version of SlimServer, and also in this case what version of mplayer
you have.

If you look at some of the threads, mostly in the third-party plugins
forum, you'll see that the version of mplayer may be crucial.

I wrote most of the original instructions for installation of AlienBBC
on a Mac, and I didn't have access to an Intel machine, so may well
have suggested a version of mplayer that isn't suitable.

One of the things that you can check is whether mplayer itself works
ok. You have to run it using Terminal.

As far as I know, most of the BBC programmes can be listened to
worldwide, but not all of them.

Because of the current problems, you need to check using a browser-
which you have done - that what you want to listen to is available.

OSX ?

If you take some time, OSX actually strips down pretty good. I have a
dedicated PPC mini that runs MythTV, I have replaced the finder with myth,
so about the only sign of it even being a mac is the bootup logo. I use this
as a video server for my DVD ISO's, it works well in that capacity.

mythtv.org is actually a good source of info on running a stripped down
mini. They have howto's on running a small Linux install on it, as well as
booting Linux over the network on it.

It would be a good feature - it could assume that where the filename is

Re: [slim] sorting FLAC MP3 files

2007-07-30 Thread erland

I'm just mentioning this since this question seems to come up once in a
while. I personally doesn't feel the solution described below is good,
but I thought it was worth mentioning.

It is possible to use the Multi Library plugin to define a virtual
library that does something similar to this. You can define the library
by using the Download more libraries link in the Multi Library plugin
web interface and choose the Best format library type. The virtual
library will detect a flac/mp3 track to be the same if they have the
same: track title, album title and track number.

The disadvantages with this solution is at least the following:
1.
If there is an album that consist of some tracks in mp3 format, some
tracks in flac format and some tracks in both format, the result will
be that you get two albums in the SlimServer interface. One album with
all the flac files and one album with all the mp3 files which don't
have flac counterpart. If both the flac and mp3 files for a specific
album is in the same directory I don't think you will have this
problem.

2.
You will have to use Custom Browse for all the browse menus, the
standard SlimServer browse menus will contain the mp3 files you don't
want.

3.
Saved playlists will play the files they refer to, so if you have
refered to a mp3 file it will be played even if there is a
corresponding flac file. If you would rather skip these mp3's than
play them, you can use the Custom Skip plugin to do this.

4.
Random playlists using the standard Random Mix plugin will play mp3
files even if you have a corresponding flac file. You can avoid this by
using the SQL Playlist plugin instead. If you like to use the standard
Random Mix and would like skip these mp3's instead of playing them, you
can use the Custom Skip plugin to do this.

I don't think you should hope that this ever will be standard
SlimServer functionality. There are just to many different things that
can go wrong depending on how your files are arranged and tagged, so I
think it would just cause a gigantic support headache. Due to this I
suspect that Logitech would like to avoid going this route.

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-30 Thread Michael Herger
After scanning results are not correct.

Are you using the latest SlimServer? There's an update script available on the
SlimCD which will do this for you. Please verify, if you see the same problems
with the latest version.

If you still see them, we'll have to turn on some debugging to know what's
going on. This can become a problem (or at least a big task...) with your large
collection. The log file might grow largely. If your free disk space is
becoming low, shut down slimserver.

To turn on the logging, go to Server Settings/Debugging and turn on d_info and
d_scan. Watch the log file (/tmp/slimserver.log or similar) for failures when
reading files. Do you see anything?

If you have playlists in your music folder, try moving them elsewhere. Make
sure they don't contain inexistent filepaths.

One other thing to look at: SlimCD comes with a lot of plugins preinstalled,
which you probably won't need at all. Do remove these plugins, too, before
rescanning, as some of them do their own magic during scans (LazySearch,
CustomBrowse etc.). Try to get started with a lean installation. Once
everything's fine you can still add back the plugins you want.

Asus have announced that it's Eee PC will be released for $199

Although the specification is more like a large PDA than a full

Re: [slim] Softsqeeze - Linux Client?

2007-07-30 Thread RaK

With the keyword headless I found a few options for what I would like to
implement.

I found slimp3slave which is exactly what I searched for. I got some
trouble setting it up.

I start slimp3
Code:

 #./slimp3slave -s 127.0.0.1 -c 'splay -M'

. I could see the new player in the web interface of slimserver. I play
command starts the music, but approx 15sec later the music stops.

I tried several mp3mplayers (mpg321,mpg123, madplay, splay) all with
the same effect.

Any hints?

Is there a way for Slim Server to only use the flac unless there is

I’ve had the same issue (lots of MP3s and a growing number of FLAC) and
have arrived at a satisfactory, non-technical solution that might also
work for you.

I have two folders: one entitled ‘Best Quality’ and the other entitled
‘Smaller’. The Best Quality folder contains (you guessed it…) my entire
collection in the best quality format that I own it in. Thus it has a
mixture of MP3 and FLAC. Slimserver is pointed at the Best Quality
folder, so you have all your music available to you.

As I gradually replace my MP3s with FLAC files they are relegated to
the 'Smaller' folder for use only with my MP3 player.

PS having reread my message I realise I have become a total nerd. I
have to redeem myself by going outside and chatting up some girls

[slim] Network range problem

2007-07-30 Thread jdk

Forgive me if this is a common problem, but I have searched and not
managed to find anything. It's difficult to know what to search for in
this case.

I recently changed the router on my home network, and found that I
could not connect my Squeezebox to the router using a wired connection.
Wireless, it works fine. I tried all manner of troubleshooting, but no
solution.

Then I found the following thread in a forum:
http://www.filesaveas.co.uk/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1167302605/2

This suggests that the Squeezebox has a firmware bug preventing it
recognizing a network range *.*.1.* when plugged directly into the
router. Sure enough, my new router is operating in a network range
*.*.1.*. My old network was *.*.0.*.

I have not yet tried changing the network range on my router because
I'd rather not break the network for now, having just given all PCs and
printers a fixed *.*.1.* address... So I'd just like to know if:
(a) this is a known issue, and (b) if it has been fixed in any recent
version of the firmware. I can't find a reference to it in the
changelog. I am still using v6.3.1 because it works without any issues
(up to now).

[slim] Squeezebox Satellite in the future???

2007-07-30 Thread thesil

There was a lot of buzzing at the beginning of this year about a
satellite SB.The word was that maybe April 1st would be the release
date. Of course that was incorrect. I am wondering if that would still
be something that could be coming. I have my SB3 downstairs and my main
music room is upstairs. It would be great if I could see and control my
SB3 from a satellite box.

Any new buzz out there about this??

Thanks

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-30 Thread schatzy

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are you using the latest SlimServer?

I had updated slimserver Just after i first downloaded slimcd a week
ago.

If you have playlists in your music folder, try moving them elsewhere.
Make sure they don't contain inexistent filepaths.

No Playlists

SlimCD comes with a lot of plugins preinstalled, which you probably
won't need at all. Do remove these plugins

By remove do you mean to erase the folders and files for them or just
turn them off in the server settings. The only plugins I will need are
IRBlaster (to turn on and off other equipment), Super Date Time (just
because i like the weather part), and the analog vu meters screen saver
(just because i am an old time audiophile). All other pluging are not
going to be used.

I will turn on debugging and see if that shows any abnormalities.

It will take a while to get thu another scan as the first scan usually
take 7-8 hours before returning results and my full time job gets in
the way of playing with this new equipment.

I will post my finding when i have them.

Thanks agian

[slim] Configuring SB3 and music server

2007-07-30 Thread BigTony

Dear All,

After enjoying the SB3 for many months, I am now entering phase II.
Currently I have SS setup on my home pc which is wired into a wireless
router. SB3 is connected wireless in a different room.

My Plan :

Build a HTPC onto which I add SS (PC in lounge with SB3).
SB3 connectes wireless to router, HTPC is connected wired to SB3, so I
can use Wake-on-Lan to wake up HTPC. HTPC currently has a wireless
card.

Will this setup work?

Cheers

BT

PS HTPC is built and is silent, so if this setup can be used I just
need to add the HD's and setup SS.

Re: [slim] Pardon me - a volume issue

2007-07-30 Thread tyler_durden

Remote controls are not a good app for rechargeable batteries. Get some
alkalines and you won't have to change them for at least a year even if
you use the remote everyday.

NiMH have a self discharge rate that is higher than the remote
control's discharge rate. Even if the remote sits unused,
rechargeables will be dead in a couple weeks. If they get too low
you'll have a problem recharging them.

Use rechargeables for apps that demand a lot of current- digital
cameras, etc.

[slim] Updated firmware, now SB3 won't start

2007-07-30 Thread Jon Geraghty

I've not been using my SB3 for a while and having moved into a new flat
I decided today to set it all up. So I reinstalled Slimserver (6.5.3),
scanned all my music files and then connected and plugged in the SB3.

It connected up to my slimserver fine but then recommended a firmware
update. So I dutifully held down brightness on the remote and set it
updating. It then gave some message like restarting, this may take a
minute and the display went blank never to return to life. I waited 10
minutes and tried removing/reinserting the power lead but to no avail. I
also tried holding down power for many seconds, and even holding add
upon reinserting the power lead to do a factory reset.

Still no luck. I did wonder if the power adapter had fused or something
but I do get a red light at the back of the SB3 so it appears to be
getting juice.

I've just sent a tech support email but in the interim has anyone here
heard of anything like this? Any recommendations?

Re: [slim] Pardon me - a volume issue

2007-07-30 Thread Secret Squirrel

TD,

Thanks for the information. I'm a green kind of guy and haven't
purchased alkalines for many years, and run rechargeables in all of my
remotes with long term (over a year) life of a change in those remotes.
Actually, I think that the batteries in the Slim remote are still the
original from '05 so Michael's idea to refresh them seems like a valid
one. Since I'm about to purchase a Harmony remote for the livingroom
(already have one in the basement) I'll attempt to suffer through
until then with rechargables. Armed with your advice and the fact the I
have found a place that recyles alkaline batteries I will switch my
remote power source for the 659.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: [slim] Network range problem

2007-07-30 Thread jdk

Michael -- thanks for the response. I changed my router to the *.*.0.*
range, and it didn't solve the problem. Should have tried that before
posting, i guess...

It's very odd. I go through the set-up for a wired network, it all goes
smoothly, the Squeezebox goes looking for my Slimserver, it finds it, it
tries to connect to it -- and the screen goes black. Every time.

Wireless, as I said before, works just fine. Any advice appreciated.

THe best channels to start with will be 1, 6 or 11 because they have the
least amount of overlap to any other channel. Try going to '11' and see
what happens... or down to '6'. I have two separte networks in my
house, one at 11 and the other at 6 both with different SSIDs doing
different things. No interference or problems at all.

figure it out. I have a bryston pre-amp.

If this is a wider issue, i.e. you want to use your pre-amp for your
TV / DVD etc, then you might want to invest in a universal learning
remote - it makes the process much more seamless.

I use the Harmony 880, which works amazingly well; pushing one button
turns on my amp, turns on the squeezebox, and switches the amp to the
right input. Hitting another button turns off the squeezebox, turns on
the DVD player and TV, and switches the amp input to DVD.
It's a bit spendy, but you can search online for deals, and there are
other threads in the forums comparing cheaper harmony models (they all
have similar functionality, just different packaging / form factors).
And of course there's a world of other universal remotes out there.

Re: [slim] Pardon me - a volume issue

2007-07-30 Thread Mark Lanctot

I use rechargeable alkalines in my universal remote. I like them
because they put out a full 1.5 V rather than the 1.25 V NiMHs do.
Also they don't cost any more than regular alkalines, provided you
already have a charger.

I do have a fairly high infant mortality rate on these things though,
but if I can get as little as 1 recharge out of them I'll accept that.
Once I weed out the poor ones, the others keep on going. They saves
money and you don't have to throw as many out. I charge them once a
month.

Back on topic, the problem is incredibly specific and you'd be noticing
other effects if it was just the remote batteries. Try:

- altering the volume using the web interface (if this works then this
is the remote)

- altering the volume while connected to SqueezeNetwork (if this works
then something's up with SlimServer)

If neither of these work then it may be a hardware problem.

Try connecting to SqueezeNetwork with it wired. If you can connect to

Thanks Mark! For the ideas to try and that concurrent green opinion.

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-30 Thread schatzy

Just ran home from work and tried to delete or move the Custom Browse,
Custom Search and some other plugins and was not able to do so.

I am new to linux but i tried to delete from Midnight Commander and
also thru a shell window via sudo rmdir CustomBrowse it kept coming
back that it could not do it because they are read only.

Is there another command that i need to use.

So i disabled all and i mean all of the plugins in the slimserver
settings menu.

Question about some of the plugins you stated to leave such as iTunes,
MusicMagic, CLI. I can understand the CLI but I don't and will not use
iTunes because it will never be installed on this machine. And as for
MusicMagic, i do not use any type of rating system and really do not
care about rating systems as i like all types of music. Is there a real
reason to leave these there if they are only taking up resources? Does
it really impact the way slimserver works?

Additional information. I only have Apple lossless stored in my library,
and slimserver is installed to a different internal disk than the
library which is on a dedicated internal disk. I disabled a bunch of
plugins and turned on scanning debugging. There is no additional output
to the log with the debug flag, and it still errors the same way.

Also, the iTunes library is created and accessed from an apple computer
over the network, using the windows machine for storage.

 happen.

If the preamp doesn't have a remote in, you'll have to buy an IR
 Blaster.

If you're using analog out, this won't work, unfortunately, because you
 can't set analog volume fixed.

I don't think that's true about IRBlaster and analog volume control

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?IRBlaster

The volume on the SB2/SB3/Transporter is set to a fixed value as soon as
an IR command is selected for either volume up and/or volume down. This
fixed value can be changed directly in the IR Blaster file itself if
needed. Open the Plugin.pm file with an editor and find the following
line in the 'Global variables' section:

my $gFixedVolume = 50; # Volume set (in SB2/3) if volup or voldown is
 used (max is 100)

Change the value to your liking, save the file and restart SlimServer.

And if you're not using IRBlaster, you can fix the volume at any level
you'd like using my VolumeLock plugin.

[slim] remote control out of synch with squeezbox

2007-07-30 Thread johnalmeida

I recently noticed that the buttons on my remote control seemed to
either do nothing or do something unexpected. When I pressed button to
advance to the next song for instance my volume went up. It also seemed
like in no cases was I able to use the down arrow on the directional
keypad. I uninstalled and installed the latest software and upgraded
the firmware on my squeezebox to no avail. It now won't even let me
browse my library. I am runnning windows xp and have my music stored
on an extenal usb hard-drive. From the pc I seem to be able do some of
these functions.

thanks

I have recently upgrade to version 6.5.3, to combat a problem with the
system not playing Apple lossless. Fixed that problem; now have
another.

Now, the system indicates that there are no artists. Specifically:
Your music library contains 1630 albums with 20908 songs by 0 artists.

Makes browsing a bit tough. I have forced a rescan (twice) and to no
avail.

I am using Windows XP.

Any help would be grand!

Many thanks,

No problem, di.fm I assume?

That playlist should work, the only thing that may cause a problem is
if the proper content-type is not being returned.

A debug log from SlimServer would be helpful since I can't test this
myself...I should really get an account I guess. :) Enable the
following debug flags: d_scan, d_parse, and d_directstream, then try to
play the playlist again, then view /log.txt in your browser. Make sure
to x-out the login info on the URLs and paste the results back.

when I'm in eye-shot of the SB, I prefer to use the IR remote, but when

not too bad, with my music reacting about 0.5 seconds after I click a

I've been eyeing the Eee since I first heard about it, but mainly for

Slimserver.

That said, looking at the specs it seems like it could perform the task
well enough (900MHz Pentium M, 512MB RAM). I've run Slimserver on
similar platforms in the past.

I suppose that if Asus manages to hit the price point they mentioned in

works.

Im in Canada, so 1 to 11. It's very reliable, so I'll leave it on 11.
Interestingly, the original channel was defaulted to 1 or Auto. I

while using it. The SB would turn off, loose connection to SlimServer

stop, often after 1 minute. Now it works as expected! I'm assuming that

I'm really pleased with mine. It's much better to browse on than the
remote (the limited SB screen is a pain for me - not enough characters
and/or I have to squint!). Plus it's great for just browsing the
internet - the wife likes it so much we might get another!

It used to sell for £250 in the UK ($500), and at that price the
reviews are justified, but IMO at $130 you really can't go wrong.

I wasn't sure if the BBC block overseas users, but if there are Aussie
users managing to connect if should be working.

I my try another install to see how it goes..

Are you using a RJ45 Cross over cable?

Re: [slim] BBC in Australia?

2007-07-30 Thread bpa

When you ran mplayer in Terminal, did you get connected to BBC and did
you hear an audio stream ?

If yes, then try increasing Radio Timeout in Server Setting/Network
from 5 to about 40.

Re: [slim] Nokia 770

2007-07-30 Thread bklaas

One of my good friends from college used this statement to describe a
date he'd gone on: well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some
of that. I kind of think the Nokia experience is similar.

It offers some really nice improvements over using the IR remote (list
browsing and cover art are prime examples), but in some other cases
(having to wait to connect to wifi, browser delays) it doesn't make the
cut.

The Nokia tablet is pretty whiz bang cool for some other things though
too, so don't discount that. I really love using mine for a personal
media player on flights.

Also, Canola is fantastic for streaming media directly to the tablet.

cheers,
#!/ben

Re: [slim] Album artwork bug?

The result in Slim Server is this(see attachment). I've tried
re-scanning my library but still getting this odd thumbnail with black
 background.

The black background paceholder tends to come about when the thumbnail
generating/caching code fails to load a thumbnail, vs. the other one
that is served when there is no cover art for an album. There seem to
be some bugs with regard to artwork thumbnails when you modify music
files. A full clear/rescan is generally needed to clear up the
problem.

No, although in desperation I did try a crossover cable at one stage. I
don't know why.
