By the way, I like the way the squeezebox sounds. I use the Rhapsody
service with it and I believe the source material has a lot to do with
the final output. It sounds great.

I use the digital coax out with a Yamaha RX-V659 - AV receiver and a
pair of Yamaha NS-777 3-Way Bass Reflex Tower Speakers using two
channel stereo mode and pure direct where the receiver doesn't
process the sound at all. This setup sounds audiophile to me without
 the audiophile budget.

And further on the subject of labels as it relates to the socalled
audiophile world, I have browsed some audiophile magazines at newstands
and I am amazed how much some people will pay for socalled audiophile
equipment. In my own opinion, it is an utter waste of money.

I studied economics in college and I remember an analogous example
involving women who go to a department store to buy lipstick and prefer
the fifty dollar brand over the five dollar brand even though in blind
tests there was no difference. It seems they received some type of
psychic income from the label, even though the quality was no
different. I think the same thing applies to audiophiles.

And do your friends who see your equipment really judge you based upon
the labels of your toys? You might want to think about getting new
 friends.

 Just my two cents.

Malarkey...

[slim] SqueezeBox3 Remote protection

2007-08-19 Thread jordi . c

Hi,

I have looked in the forum but cannot find anything related to
protection for the remote control.

I would like to keep my remote controls of the SqueezeBox how they're
now.

Because they are glossy I think scratches can be seen easily. Also the
text on the buttons will wear out with extensive use on most remote
controls.

Kind Regards.

[slim] Slimserver not 'seeeing' the same as iTunes

2007-08-19 Thread jmaynard

I am running Slimserver 6.2.4 on Win XP.
The music list disagrees with the list that iTunes provides: some
tracks display a different Genre and/or a different Album name and/or
different Artist name.
To try to fix this I removed all ver 3.1 tags but I still get
differences.
For example, I have a Leo Sayer album that iTunes (and MP3tag and
MP3Collector and Windows Explorer) report as having the genre 'Easy
Listening' whereas Slimserver insists it is 'Pop'.
I have checked some of the other anomalies and all are correct in
iTunes, MP3Tag and MP3 Collector.
Any suggestions as to why Slimserver is different and/or how to fix
it?
Thanks

Re: [slim] What does a $350,000 system sound like?

2007-08-19 Thread ioncube

don't know what I was expecting, but certainly way less 'wow' than when
I first time heard true HiFi sound (Marantz).

Exactly. The differences between a 350,000 and let's say 35,000 system
are presumably measurable given favourable conditions and top notch
monitoring equipment, but it's less likely that the average 30 to 40
year olds ears and brain can detect much, particularly if they're
unmusical and untrained in listening.

If one does implement a really top spec system then it's probably not
going to put it in an average living room filled with junk that
compromises the sound, but will be in a dedicated multimedia room with
as close to desirable acoustics as possible, and that will probably
have as much a beneficial effect as anything.

I'm currently putting the picture speakers that you can get from
soundartuk.com into our kitchen as traditional speakers were
unsuitable, and with an onsite demo I was surprised at how good those
sound relative to my expectations. The sound is radiated differently to
normal speakers, and stereo imaging even from a dual transducer single
panel was very effective. You can also get ones that are plastered into
the wall or ceiling so that they're completely invisible. Not going to
sound as good as the ugly speakers from the 350K system, but definitely
more pleasing :)

[slim] Crossover cable and wireless bridge?

I know that the SB2/3 has a bridging or AP function, but wasn't clear
whether this permits plugging in a wired client via a crossover cable
to share the wireless link for the wired client and SB (maybe that is
precisely the function). I couldn't find any xover cables here to try
it yet, and wanted to save a trip to being overcharged at maplins if
it's definitely not going to work. Should this work?

The SB3 needs a crossover cable to connect a wired client through the
wireless bridge.

You will need to go through setup on the SB3 to switch on the bridging
with the wired client connected.

Re: [slim] Slimserver 6.5.3 6.5.4 for Infrant NAS NV+

2007-08-19 Thread dhinesh

To shed more light on the matter, I had followed up with infrant and
Slim Devices. Infrant via long distance as I live in Asia. They
mentioned that it will take several weeks before someone gets around to
make the BIN file for the update. One of their support staff gave me a
link to the new infrant software:
www.infrant.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12249. Its a beta release of the
new software. I did not download it as it mentions that Infrant will
not support the beta release and you can not get back to the older
release once you install the Beta Release. Whats scary is that it now
allows you to access the root of the infrant system. Was wondering if
we will have to do future updates of slim server ourselves? Since we
have access to root. But how? Another thing: how do we convert a Linux
file to a BIN image to do this?

2007-08-19 Thread ioncube

Thanks for the quick reply. I'd seen that thread already, but there
seemed some confusion (at least I was confused :) about whether the
thread was discussing trying to use the SB as an AP for other wireless
devices, or what I want to do which is attaching a second client via
the wired port to get it onto a wireless network. I'll get an xover
cable from maplin and see what happens.

It'll be great if it works as I need to network a Siemens S450
basestation (VoIP/Dect phone) which only has a wired port in a room
where there's no wired ethernet. An SB3 is located were it would be
convenient to tuck away the phone basestation, so if I can get the
phone onto the network via the SB then that'll save getting a separate
ethernet to wireless device for the phone and be a neat solution.

Re: [slim] Buying a new Squeezebox...... or not?

2007-08-19 Thread mlsstl

Haunyack, I'm curious as to what part of the prior post your malarky
comment applies?

The whole of humanity is not shy for snobs who value brands and
appearance as much or more than performance and audiophilia is
certainly part of the human race. Exclusivity is a critical component
of marketing for certain products where mass market penetration works
against that image.

Mortslim's point about some who need the status conferred by one brand
over another is accurate for at least a certain percentage of
audiophiles, though certainly not all.

I would suspect that the executives and marketing types over at
Logitech studied this issue very carefully and weighed the likely
outcomes. They knew they'd tick off a few people with the branding
change. They probably also looked at increases in market penetration
into new segments with a more widely known product name. While
corporations typically don't share marketing projection data with the
public (and their competitors) it doesn't take a rocket scientists to
figure they concluded there were probably more new sales to be had from
the name change in contrast to lost sales to those who think their
private club has now been invaded by the riff-raff.

Anyone have any ideas?

[slim] SB3, active speakers and subwoofer issue

2007-08-19 Thread Husted

Hi all,

I have a setup with a DB3 connected directly to a pair of active
speakers (they have a RCA input and automatically powers on). Now I
want to add a subwoofer but have run into a issue, how to I connect the
subwoofer?
The subwoofer I want to use is the BW PV1 which has a high WAF :-)
Problem is that is that it only has a single input and no output.
So how would you connect the PV1 to my setup? The PV1 retailer
suggested that I connect a Y-splitter to one of the audio channel and
have one channel that feeds both the subwoofer and the active speaker.
Will this work, can the SB3 drive both the PV1 and the active speaker
on one channel?

Regards
Henrik

ludicrous, with on-line prices anywhere between £1300 £1700 (approx

Why is this with Slim Devices website showing $2000 or a little over

Maybe what the PR guys could do is provide an explanation for the price

Right, because that's something we've been known to do? Logi employees
will not comment here on pricing for many reasons, but we're not here
to suppress civilized discussion either. The only posts we've ever

Something has actually happened since the last thread.
Previously the national Logitech sites showed a high price on the

Re: [slim] Transporter Price

2007-08-19 Thread funkstar

The cost of things, especially specialist luxury items like the
Transporter are higher in the UK (and the rest of Europe to a certain
extent) because of the following reasons compared to the US:
Taxes are higher (VAT)
Taxes are higher (company tax)
The cost of business is generally higher (Wages, rents, electricity,
etc)
The US is less afluent at the moment

And here is the killer point: The transporter can be sold at 1700,
because thats what the market values it at. If no-one buys it at that
price, then it will be reduced to the point it does sell.

[slim] Wake on Lan no longer working

2007-08-19 Thread Plano_Mike

The PC on which I run SS had its C: drive crash. I re-installed XP and
SS and the system seems stable.

Before the crash I could get the PC to wake on LAN from either of my
two SB3s or from my laptop sending a magic packet.

I am having difficulty getting WOL to work after the XP re-install.

I have WOL enabled in the BIOS (Abit MoBo with an integrated 3com
10/100 ethernet port).

I have tried all of the permutations I can think of under the
properties for the NIC, but lo the system will no longer wake.

The PC is connected to a Linksys switch (and was when WOL used to
work). I notice when the PC goes into standby, the LEDs on the switch
corresponding to the PC go out. I don't recall if this was the
behavior before or not. If the ethernet adaptor is listening for magic
packets would one expect to see the lights on the switch to stay on?

Any suggestions?

Many TIA.

Mike

[slim] Unable to Connect to SlimServer After Working for 5 Days

2007-08-19 Thread mbakes

I have a Transporter which has been working fine for the last 5 days.
Today, I started getting stoppages while playing a song. I then tried
to connect to SlimServer and it just hangs. I've reinstalled the
software a few times. Each time it will work and while playing a song
it will pause and intermittently start (for second) then pause. I try
to reconnect and it just hangs. I've reset the Transporter and
wireless router and the same thing happens. It finds the network, gets
the ip automatically then finds my computer then goes to connect and
gets hung up at this point.

Any help would be appriciated.

One patch that is sure to work very well is a Linux CD. Facetiousness

If you have a spare (perhaps older) machine available for use as a file

Lots of places have strange markup do to customs taxes, VAT, exchange
rates, etc.

I've bought stuff for friends in down under, plugged it in so I know it
is USED, and ship it.

You (the receiver) are still liable for duties, etc.

It always amazes me that for a lot of consumer stuff, the UK price in
pounds is the same as the US price in dollars. Since the pound is worth
about two bucks each, thats a lot of markup.

I remember walking down the streets in Den Haag (The Hague) and seeing
Bass Weeguns in a shop window for three times what they cost here. My US
citizen friends working on assignment in Europe would use their trips to
corporate headquarters for serious shopping trips.

[slim] MUSICBRAINZ_SORTNAME - not supported but in code?

2007-08-19 Thread SadGamerGeek

I asked about this as part of a thread in the tagging forum, but it
might be better to ask here.

Slimserver doesn't seem to support MUSICBRAINZ_SORTNAME (only
ARTISTSORT as far as I can tell). If that is the case, I don't
understand why it is referenced in FLAC.pm:

Code:

my %tagMapping = (
  'TRACKNUMBER'   = 'TRACKNUM',
  'DISCNUMBER'= 'DISC',
  'URL'   = 'URLTAG',
  'musicbrainz_sortname'  = 'ARTISTSORT',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUMARTISTID' = 'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUMARTIST_ID',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUMID'   = 'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUM_ID',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUMSTATUS'   = 'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUM_STATUS',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUMTYPE' = 'MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUM_TYPE',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_ARTISTID'  = 'MUSICBRAINZ_ARTIST_ID',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_SORTNAME'  = 'MUSICBRAINZ_SORTNAME',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_TRACKID'   = 'MUSICBRAINZ_ID',
  'MUSICBRAINZ_TRMID' = 'MUSICBRAINZ_TRM_ID',

It would be really useful (at least to me) if ss did support this tag,
but I'm a bit confused why the code references a lowercase version of
the tag. Can anyone explain what is happening there...?

Cheers,

Richard

[slim] Cannot read music library on NAS

2007-08-19 Thread sgaspam

I've used Slimserver and squeezeboxes successfully for a couple years
now.

I have recently moved my music library to a DLINK-323 NAS device. I'm
mapping the drive to my Vista machine and can readily browse to the
files using Windows Explorer or through the 'My Network Places'
interface. Unfortunately, the Slimserver interface will not allow me
to enter any combination of paths to the music folder on that drive. I
get the error:

Oops - N:\My Music\MP3 doesn't seem to be a valid directory. Try
again.

I've tried many combinations of paths, such as the one shown by the My
Network explorer \\DLINK-EC2420\Volume_1-1\My Music\MP3, etc. and
nothing works. Has anyone got any ideas?

reboot now that I've set the Slimserver to run at login time, though
maybe not, as the drive letter actually gets mapped after that at the
 moment.

Let us know if that works. I believe the run at login time means to
run when the user logs in to the machine, not when the machine reboots.
Select the other startup option to run SlimServer as a service
available without a user logged into the server, but you'll have to use
the UNC path to the library (generally a better option anyway, since it
doesn't rely on a drive mapping) and you may also need to run the
service under a user account.

If exclusivity pitches your tent you need to spend a whole lot more than
$250-300 to impress anyone except maybe 12 year old boys and $5 hookers.
If the thing does what you want buy it. If it doesn't, don't, but
whatever you do, quit whining about the logo here. If you had any
creativity you could make your own logo to put on the thing or think of
a neat way to cover it (or remove it as I suggested earlier).

That's it! My new product will be a sticker with a logo of my own
design, far more exclusive than either Logitech or Slimdevices. I'll
sell the logo stickers for $100 each (that way they will be more
EXCLUSIVE) to the logo-babies who keep whining like little girlie-men.
My logo sticker will be sized to cover either the Slimdevices or
Logitech logos. They will make your SB sound better, the same way the
orange sticker on the clock makes your system sound better!

Probably a question with an obvious answer, however, what is the easiest
way to get my SB3's displaying on multiple lines. I'm after something

It annoys me when something is playing I can't put a finger on and the

The MusicInfoSCR screensaver is probably the only way to get it on two
lines.

http://www.herger.net/slim-plugins/detail.php?nr=446kategorie=slim-plugins

Natively, you can that information on a single (scrolling) line by
configuring:

Server Settings Formatting Title Format

and creating a format to display what you want if one doesn't already
exist.

Then go to:

Player Settings Basic Settings Title Format

and select the desired format from the ones available, and make it
'Current'.

I saw these at the CEDIA show in Australia a few weeks ago. They
