Re: [slim] Itunes artwork in slimserver

2007-10-07 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Actually, not strictly correct.
My iTunes Update plugin has an option (for windows only) that copies the
artwork for the currently playing song into SlimServer.
It is working rather well with the new default skin in SS7.0!

[slim] iTunes alternatives

2007-10-07 Thread Lorrin

I'm currently using iTunes. Virtually every time I restart iTunes it
decides my library is corrupt and churns for hours rebuilding it from
the XML file. Argh! I'd love to use a different library system. Can
anything else do what I do with iTunes?

* dynamic "smart" playlists based on ratings and genre and listening
stats
* syncs to a portable player. Portable player can input ratings to the
system.
* SlimServer can read the dynamic playlists
* podcast support

Bonus points for bi-directional interaction with SlimServer so that
Squeezebox ratings/playback feeds back in to the system.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Itunes artwork in slimserver

2007-10-07 Thread MelonMonkey

Just embed the artwork into the the tracks and SlimServer will see them
properly. iTunes uses correct album art tags just like any reputable
tagger out there. But it doesn't add the artwork automatically into the
track's metadata if you only use the "Get Album Artwork" feature. In
that case it stores the album art in its own external library files.

Adding the artwork into each track's metadata is much more useful than
having jpegs scattered through-out various folders that aren't useful
to any other software and don't follow your music around.

If using Mac OS you can download a script to automatically re-embed the
artwork for any track(s) selected in iTunes:

http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#trackswithoutartwork

If you want to do it yourself manually, you just need to select the
artwork in the preview window at the bottom left of the iTunes window,
COPY it and then PASTE it into one or more tracks using the "Get Info"
window.

This is really old news and it would be nice if people would just stop
griping about this rather minor annoyance with iTunes:

Very nicely crafted 3rd party interface for SS which has an automatic
lookup function for currently playing tracks.
I have gravitated to this over AlbumArtAggregator just for ease of
use.
As I play tracks from day-to-day, album art is retrieved for update.
Less of a chore than pro-actively filling in album art with other
alternatives.
This plugin is a workable alternative to the otherwise bug-prone UI of
SS.

Bottoms up!

ITunes uses it's own id scheme for linking artwork and stores the
artwork in it's own location.
Currently, there is no way to get this directly from iTunes, except
from iTunes.

Slimserver (now SqueezeCenter) works best with cover.jpg files in the
same folder as each album, or
images stored in the tags of each file. Why iTunes needed to do
something new and completely different that
doesn't play well with others...only Apple can explain that.

I find that new and changed music scan is much faster that a full scan
(although haven't timed this in SC7.0).

However, I've never found the new and changed music scan to be too reliable; it
frequently causes me issues with the library if I have

No, I don't think he should take any "blame". Why should a genuine
customer who has done nothing wrong be blamed?
Perhaps he could have done more checks. Easy to say after the event.
But he can not be held to be at fault. If he'd bought the item from 'a
guy down the pub' or some other risky situation, then he would not be
justified in complaining. He would be buying knowing he had no rights
if anything went wrong. In that situation it's definitely 'buyer
beware'.
>From a legal point of view empgamer is completely blameless. From a
moral or common sense point of view perhaps he could have done more
checking before parting with his money. Perhaps he might now also agree
with that perspective. But that's always easy to say in hindsight. I
certainly feel that he has done nothing that deserves the rude and self
righteous comments from a few people here.
He's done the right thing, and has now alerted others to possible risks

Re: [slim] Problems Connecting to SlimServer

2007-10-07 Thread pfarrell

You don't *have* to have a static IP address for your Slimserver, but it
helps.

In general, on Windows, you go to Control -> Network -> pick the NIC,
-> TCP/IP -> properties and click off "DHCP" and enter a fixed IP
address, netmask and router/gateway IP.

But, you shouldn't set this blindly. Which raises questions on how your
SlimServer PC is getting its DHCP address. If its from a
router/wireless/cable model, then you should got to it, and find out
what ranges of IP addresses you can reserve. Then pick a fixed address
in the same subnet but outside the dymanic range.

Re: [slim] How to you like to search for music in your library ?

2007-10-07 Thread bgw

Hi erland,

Well FWIW, I would love the ability to search within custom tags that
were aquired via CustomScan!

The reason is that I add a custom tag to all my flac files that
contains recording information.
Currently, thanks to your CustomScan and CustomBrowse plugins, I can
view this information right on the SB via the Now Playing right click
menu, which is incredible!
I must thank you for this functionality!

So the point is, currently my music selection process starts with the
music I want to hear -
ie, I typically browse or search by artist (whether by letter, lazy,
numerical keypress or standard) and drill down from there.

To be able to approach browsing my music collection from the other
direction, ie, recording criteria, would be awsome.

However I understand that this is one unique thing that may not
particularly pique yours or anyone's interest.

-Cheers!
-Thanks again!

[slim] Where have all my thumbnails gone?

2007-10-07 Thread Brian Ritchie

Whilst trying to get MusicIP to work, I did my first clean-and-rescan in
ages (using SS 6.5.3) - and every single one of my thumbnails
disappeared!

(I was trying to fix another problem where a scan-for-new picked up
temporary wav files generated by EAC that I'm convinced were removed
before the scan started. Suspect #1 is the MusicIP server, since that
was running during the rip. Do I *really* have to pause it each time I
want to rip something?!)

I've now installed 6.5.4, and did yet another clean scan, but to no
avail.

Sigh. I thought that one issue that bugged me for ages - that "scan for
new/changed music" wasn't setting thumbnails - had been fixed; but this
is even worse than before - and I don't know when or how it was
introduced, since I can't remember the last time I did a full scan
(though I'm sure it would've been with 6.5.3).

I haven't touched the artwork at all (cover.jpg in each album folder).
The thumbnails were shown before. Now they are not. Why? ...No,
actually, I don't care why, I just want them back!

Well empgamer, I support you 100% in the actions you have taken, and in
your replies to those who have criticised you here.

It's one thing to have bought faulty goods. Not necessarily the
retailers fault. But then, when they fail to respond promptly to
resolve the problem, I think anyone is justified in losing confidence
and exercising their legal rights. It's people who fail to take action
when 'abused' by retailers that makes it more difficult for everyone
else.

And then to be criticised by others for exercising your rights!!!

I suspect that your 'error' was in mentioning another brand of media
player. Some people here seem to think this forum is a Slim Devices fan
club. It's not. And Slim Devices/Logitech (and the majority of forum
users, I feel)seem to realise it's not, thankfully. It's pleasing to
see that Slim/Logitech were attentive to your problem and did try to
help, even though the retailer should have been the one responding
promptly.

I would like to add that I am a happy Squeezebox 3 owner, and hope to
add a Transporter in the not too distant future.

Thank you empgamer (and Sixedup) for bringing to the attention of other

[slim] Router issues

2007-10-07 Thread Big AAC

Hi Guys, newbie so please go easy :)

I picked up an SB3 yesterday and generally i'm really happy, however i
seem to be having issues sustaining a connection between my SB3 and my
router (at least i think thats what the problem is). The SB is now
sitting about 2 feet away from the router and still it seems to drop
every 5 minutes, sometimes the screen will go blank and come bck to
life after 10-20 seconds, other times it goes blank and stays blank
until i hit the arrow keys on the remote which then takes me back to
the Squeezebox Setup page where i have to connect again.

Strangely i have gone through a new setup a couple of times and each
time it connects to the wireless network (WPA password is correct etc.)
but it fails to find the IP address automatically(DHCP) and i therefore
i have to self assign.

So basically my question is..what are the best settings to use with
the Netgear DG834PN and SB3, i'd REALLY() would like to get this up
and running consistantly.

I must also say i'm having the same issue with internet radio, the
stream seems to cut. buffer quite a bit, but i'm not sure if this might
not be my internet connection (although BBC listen again works fine when
used directly on my PC??!?)

Any help from you guys would be really appreciated, thanks

Andrew

EDIT: I'm using Vista Ultimate 32 and the frmware version on my NETGEAR
is V1.03.25

EDIT2: Wireless signal is constantly at 100% by the way.

You can configure Internet Connection Sharing (assuming it's Windows) on
the internet connection of the living room PC, and that allows the SB3
to see the rest of the network through the PC.

Though it's likely to be less hassle to go and buy a very cheap switch
and use that instead to provide an extra connection without connecting
the SB3 through the PC.

Google for "internet connection sharing" and you'll find lots of pages
telling you how to set it up.

If it's Windows, you need to enable "Internet Connection Sharing" or

from one to pass to the other. You'd define the powerline NIC as your
"Internet" connection, the SB NIC as the "LAN" connection.

[slim] Two network connections at one PC?

2007-10-07 Thread andyh41

Hi,

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this but it's beyond my reasoning
at the moment :-). I cannot seem to connect my SB3 and maintain an
Internet connection. Setup is as follows:

I have a Main PC and NAS in the bedroom attached to a broadband router
and this is then connected to the lounge PC via a powerline link. I can
see both PC's and NAS over the network and internet access is fine. Then
I added a network card to the lounge PC and attached an SB3 via
ethernet.

I assigned a static IP address to the SB3 and network card and it
worked fine but the network connection and internet access disappeared
(in the lounge). If I remove the ethernet connection to the SB3 the
internet connection is restored.

I guess the conflict is having 2 network connections at the lounge PC
but why is that a problem? Can I overcome it through network settings
or do I need to add another switch?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Andy.

[slim] Nokia N800 Player Selection Problem

2007-10-07 Thread ds2021

I am having difficulty with the selection of players in the the Touch
and Nokia 770 skins in the version 7 Slimserver/Squeezecenter. Each of
the players is present in the drop down dialogue at the top right of
the screen, but when I click on the player I want to control, the name
remains and the box appears with a highlight around it, but the player
cannot be controlled.

In other skins such as Fishbone or Handheld, the player selection seems
to work fine. Javascript is enabled on the N800.

Any thoughts?

Good point - a full clear and rescan would be needed. There was a
thread a while back about how the time needed for a full scan wasn't a
significantly more than a "new and changed" scan - AFAIK because
Slimserver still parses each file to work out whether it is new or not.
Not sure if that is still the case in 7.0.

Re: [slim] Unable to play any playlists through Squeezebox/Slimserver 6.5.4

2007-10-07 Thread killick

Slimserver says my playlists are empty, but when I open the .m3u files
with an editor, I can see that they are not. Strangely, this is only
affecting some of my playlists, not all, and I can't see any
differences among them.

I'm using absolute paths in m3u lists on Ubuntu 7.04 and a SB2.
SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.38-Ubuntu_0ubuntu1

These things have not worked:
rescanning the playlists.
copying to a new name and rescanning the playlists.
changing the permissions to rwx on a playlist and rescanning

What's also strange is that the 'empty' playlists will still play using
Amarok (kind of like Winamp for Windows).

Creating and playing new playlists, either with the remote control or
using the web interface works perfectly.

Anyone know how to get the Slimserver to read my playlists again?

Thanks,

Hi,
The waveinput plugin can stream this from your soundcard to the SB/TP
(Lossless - whereas the stream is piped directly with no transcoding
loss)
Works great...a plugin worth mention.

btw... I love the service, thanks for the heads up.

Bottoms up!

[slim] Cannot get playlist with URL's to work

2007-10-07 Thread neu242

I am trying to use a playlist with URL's, and then use it as a
favourite. I cannot get it to work, am I missing something?

Example .pls playlist (I've tried an .m3u as well):

Code:

  [playlist]
  NumberOfEntries=2
  File1=mms://my.server.com/rod/test_071007_06.wma
  Title1=Test 071007
  Length1=-1
  File2=mms://my.server.com/rod/test_071007_07.wma
  Title2=Test2 071007
  Length2=-1
  Version=2

If I just put mms://my.server.com/rod/test_071007_06.wma into "Tune
into URL" in the web interface, it plays fine. If I put
http://my.server.com/test.pls (the example above) into "Tune into URL",
the squeezebox just turns itself off.

Any ideas?

[slim] How to rescan just itunes playlists using scanner.pl

2007-10-07 Thread govardha

Hello,

I am aware of the myriad options in the scanner.pl script. How do I
just run the script in the CLI to rescan just any new iTunes playlists?
The command below seems to scan the whole library once again, which is
not what I want.

scanner.pl --itunes

Thanks,
G

[slim] SlimServer 7.0 fails to start on windows

2007-10-07 Thread y360

Downloaded & installed latest slimserver 7.0 (07-Oct-2007) executable
for Windows
I get the following:

C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server>squeezecenter.exe
The following CPAN modules were found but are too old to work with
SqueezeCenter
:
File::Temp (loaded 0.16, need 0.17)

To fix this problem you have several options:
1. Install the latest version of the module(s) using CPAN: sudo cpan
Some::Module
2. Update the module's package using apt-get, yum, etc.
3. Run the .tar.gz version of SqueezeCenter which includes all required
CPAN modules.

Undefined subroutine &main::main called at slimserver.pl line 65.

C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server>

[slim] Problems with recent slim server releases

2007-10-07 Thread scozza

Well I have been happily using my slims for years without any issues.
Since upgrading to the logitech flavour of slim server things have
started going awry. With great regularity the slim server dies on my
2003 server, usually every day or so. And now I have discovered that
the artists view in the web interface produces one artist with several
squillion tracks attributed to them. If I check the tag info in the
'browse music folder' view, everything looks fine and I can happily
play them from there. I'm seriously considering a downgrade to an
earlier version of slim server. Is anyone else having similar
problems?

Cheers,
Scozza.

That's a fair point. Obviously Slim Devices must concentrate on getting
SS 7.0 and the Jive system working well.

But in the meantime there are clearly some issues with the Transporter
firmware. The company really can't afford to have its flagship model
not working correctly, and ought to see the sense in having someone
work exclusively on it for a few days to get it sorted once and for
all.
