Yes it does run, and no nothing special. Please see the 3rd party forum -

Re: [slim] Wireless experts out there? I need help

2007-11-14 Thread MUCHO

I ended up solving my problem. First I decided perhaps it was getting
too hot since it is on 24/7 and I have been upping the power so I
opened it up and put some heatsinks on the 2 chips that were warm to
the touch. Unfortunately somehow this process killed the router - so I
now have a Trendnet draft N router that was $29.95 after rebate and
without any hacks or extended range antenna I'm getting 6-10% better
signal on the squeezeboxes.

Re: [slim] 1 step down

2007-11-14 Thread davep

It's not really clear what you are trying to do. Do you have a
SqueezeBox or are you trying to use SlimServer/SqueezeCenter to play
music on your PC? If you have an SB that will find the server
automatically when you start it. If the latter then you should look at
using the SB emulator, SoftSqueeze. Look for this under Help if you are
running version 6.5 or Extras on version 7.0.

Re: [slim] Suddenly web interface "gone"...

2007-11-14 Thread Zevs

Hi again!

Well ... when looking at the properties of the SlimServer Web Interface
face file I noticed it was set to open in Firefox which sounded OK since
I use Firefox all the time. However I noticed that in the address field
in Firefox it seemed it couldn't correctly parse the file name, putting
"%20" instead of " ". So then I did go back to the properties of the
file and changed the program to open it with to Explorer instead. Then
when I clicked on it, it anyhow opened up in Firefox and this time to
the correct address without any problem. Go figure... no idea what
happend and why this strange behavior Sorry for long explanation,
the short message is it works fine now again :)

Hi Michael! I am running version 6.5.4 and everything worked fine the
day before, but suddenly yesterday I got this message whatever I did. I
then tried to reinstall Slimserver, the same version, but still get the
same message, every time I try "Open Slimserver" from the tray icon.
Except for when I noticed this problem suddenly, I haven't re-installed
or done anything lately with Slimserver, it has been running nicely as
expected and I use it regularly every day.

Re: [slim] 'Clear library and rescan everything' for just one album cover?

2007-11-14 Thread amcluesent

I'm using SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252,
and there is still oddness in scanning album art.

Browsing music folders definitely never adds art from folder.jpg.
Scanning for changes can sometimes cause recently added albums to
'forget' the album art they had. Only a full scan restores things. Very
annoying that after all this time, a basic function remains hit and
miss.

[slim] Suddenly web interface "gone"...

2007-11-14 Thread Zevs

Hi!

Suddenly today I wasn't able to connect with my Squeezebox so I checked
the computer. The little icon was on in the taskbar, but I know that
doesn't always mean the server is running. But when clicking on this
icon as I usually do to check if Slimserver is running, instead of the
usual interface opening up in Firefox I got the message:

Firefox can't find the file at:

/C:/ProgramData/SlimServer/home.html?player=00:04:20:06:74:70.

I reinstalled Slimserver, restared the computer but still get the same
message. However, if I then just used the address
http://127.0.0.1:9000/ in the browser, everything worked just fine! So
anyone understand what happend, why suddenly can't I open the
interface as I have always done previously ?

Grateful for advice or help!

Re: [slim] Apple Iphone= Idiotphone?

2007-11-14 Thread iPhone

Don't be afraid of what you have not used or have not owned. Come on in
the water is fine, no really it is. To each his own, and the iPhone
works well for and has great value to me. One should not slam something
they have not tried or even don’t need. At the price they are going for,
somebody must need and like them!

Yes I own an iPhone. I paid $289US for mine brand new in the box with a
hundred dollar Jawbone Bluetooth included in that $289 because I waited.
Less then I paid for my BlackJack two and a half years ago. I own no
Macs and have never owned an iPod.

Who cares about the battery? Battery technology has come a long way and
by the time I need a new battery there will be a better cheaper phone
available or I will buy a new one. I use my iPhone for about 14 hours a
day never turning it off and get about a day and a half out of a charge.
And when it gets low, I just stick it in the dock and load new tunes on
it while it charges.

The memory issue does not even exist. How many other cell phones can
expand to 8GBs much less come with 8 gigs? Answer, not many and the
ones that are coming are only there because of the iPhone. Have you
priced an 8GB MicroSD that will not come with the phone you buy? Can I
fill the phone up, with over 5000 CDs ripped, you bet I can. But I
don’t need every song I own with me all the time. All I need are the
best of my favorites, which takes up about 6 GB. That is over 5 days of
music listening to it straight (don’t think I can stay awake that
long).

The WiFi works great (full real web pages not that mobile crap!)! And
when not in WiFi coverage it falls back to Edge automatically. If one
can't afford $20 a month for unlimited data, move back home to the
parent's basement and turn in your cellular phone!

The touch screen is wonderful and the ability to do landscape or
portrait is a fantastic function. I have owned every Blackberry known
to man and tried every “Smart” phone and pocket PC (Cingular Wireless
allows to you return any phone in two weeks for something else). None
of them came close to allowing me to work away from home the way the
iPhone has. I used to be chained to my 9-pound laptop when I left the
house, now I grab my iPhone and don’t give it a second thought. I get
all my E-mail, can react to any Market Alert, receive phone calls, and
buy or sell options mobile on the actual website instead of the
stripped down mobile websites that will not let you do complex spreads
or iron condors.

Plus as others have said, if nothing else, the iPhone will make the
other phone makes put out a better product. I believe the iPhone has
sold more initial retail sales then any other cell phone in history.
And when it gets to the give away stage in two years for $59.95 plus a
two year contract extension, it will most likely become the world’s
best selling cell phone ever.

Re: [slim] 'Clear library and rescan everything' for just one album cover?

2007-11-14 Thread dcote

i would like to chip in here... because it seems as if arie and i may
have the same problem. (correct me if i am wrong arie!)

when i add new music, albumart shows up in "album view" but thumbnails
in "browse albums" do NOT.

this happens even without a complete re-scan, just scanning for new and
changed is enough (i am running 6.5.3).

but how does one get the thumbnails to update/show without a complete
re-scan? no amount of browsing to anywhere fixes the thumbnails for
me.

and as you can see they do work, so i am assuming my configured
settings are ok.

[slim] dealing with special chars in albumart JPGs?

2007-11-14 Thread dcote

while i am at it... (today i must have posted as much as i normally do
in 1/2 year! ;-)

my albumart is in a separate directory from my music. i have SS set up
to display it. (i think)

my scheme is based on albums, because they are unique.

but i have album tags with "$" and ":" in them, which NTFS cant
handle.

so how do i name JPGs for such albums?

example album:
"Some Girls Wander By Mistake: 80 - 83"

what name should i give the albumart JPG?
"Some Girls Wander By Mistake 80 - 83.jpg" -> tried it, doesnt work
"Some Girls Wander By Mistake 80 - 83.jpg" ? (supposed to have TWO
spaces between Mistake and 80, but the BBS autocorrects it)
"Some Girls Wander By Mistake_ 80 - 83.jpg" ?

i know i could try it out, but i really do not want to re-scan the
entire DB every single time! (takes ~45 mins. on my machine)
(see also: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35177)

thanks for your help guys!

Thanks for the replies. I take your point on product release dates,
probably not that sensible but it does feel like it's been a while
since the merge and i would have expected something by now.

If they were gunning for some kind of Christmas offering it would have
been prudent to hype it up a bit during peoples Christmas shopping
window. That has not materialised as yet so my assumption now is that
if it is quiet at the beginning of Dec it will be quiet till a few
months into next year.

All complete speculation of course

Re: [slim] Mac Mini - going to sleep

2007-11-14 Thread googdot

That's correct - sleep settings are in System Preferences - Energy
Saver.

I have the same setup and my mini has been running as a dedicated
server box 24/7 for well over a year and half now. The machine is
headless and I control the settings updates, etc. via VNC from my other
mac.

An alternative would be to setup Wake on LAN as that works fine as well
if you do in fact want your mini to sleep when idle.

PM me if you need any specific details - happy to help get it setup :)

Re: [slim] Really slow menus

2007-11-14 Thread dcote

yep - sounds familiar! :-)

your mac mini is probably just too slow.

my slimserver runs on a 700 MHz VIA ultra-low-power mainboard. (i want
to save energy). when it has too many other things to do (such as:
virus scanning, video streaming, etc.) my SB3 also sometimes slows
right down. it can take ~10-15 sec. to come alive after pressing the
power button!

things used to be a LOT worse when the mainboard only had 256 MB RAM. i
upgraded to 1GB, which improved things GREATLY!

previously, my SB would stall on every 4-5 button push, now it may go
days without stalling.

still happens though...

is your web UI also *very* slow? as in: 10-20 sec. for displaying a
"browse albums" page?

oh, and i found it had (as you suspect) nothing at all to do with my
WLAN. ;-)

[slim] which files/dirs does SS access? -> want to exclude from virus scanner (too slow)

2007-11-14 Thread dcote

hi!

i am running my slimserver on a severely CPU starved pc. it takes
~10-20 sec (!) for the web-interface to display a "browse albums"
page... :-(

i discovered that my virus scanner uses ~50% of the CPU cycles every
time i refresh a web-page. obviously, if i dont scan for viruses
anymore, i should be able to speed up rendering significantly.

i have already excluded
c:\program files\slimserver and
f:\music (all my music and albumart is in here)
from the virus scanner, wich dramatically improved scanning time. :-)
(about 2x the speed now)

however, webpage rendering does not seem effected by this, as the virus
scanner still gobbles up lots of CPU cycles during web access.

which other dirs must i exclude?

[slim] Sirius Plugin playing but no audio?

2007-11-14 Thread StAlphonzo

Hello!

Wondering if anyone has had a problem where your Squeezbox shows your
Sirius stream is playing yet you don't receive any audio? All other
internet radio stations work as does any of my personal music
collection. I can access the Sirius menus and choose a station and the
devices shows it should be playing but nothing comes out. It was
working just fine a few days ago. Here's a log dump, though I'm not
entire sure which logs to choose when debugging. Any assistance would
be appreciated.

Re: [slim] Skipping folders for import

2007-11-14 Thread sciurius

I developed a small patch to SlimServer. With this patch, SlimServer
will ignore directories that contain a file named '.slimskip'.
I use it to hide directories from the scanner, while they are still
browsable manually. For example, directories that contain unsorted
music, or other things that I do not want to go into the database.
You can find the patch here:

Re: [slim] Cue Sheet Problems

2007-11-14 Thread jjanis

Hi Andy,
Upon your suggestion played around a bit with the embedded tags.
Thanks - that was a good suggestion!
In most cases I got the embedded tags in good accord with the external
.cue sheet. Got both the "COMPOSER" and "CONDUCTOR" fields in, Foobar
interpreting them correctly.
Working on this found I am very much missing a tool where I could edit
both the embedded tags and the external .cue sheet simultaneously. Not
touching the indexes, just the composer, performer, title, etc. fields.
Should be possible...
Now I had to use metaflac - TagScanner/MediaMonkey - Notepad - Foobar
to achieve what I want. And even with this combo I currently haven't
figured out how to tag/cue properly a disc where several
composers/performers are represented.
Will be experimenting a bit more in the evening...

JJanis

Re: [slim] SB3 doesn't like microwave

I guess your SB3 uses wireless?
The microwave emitts radiation in the same frequency band in which the
sb3's wireless card operates (2.4GHz).
Try to switch the wireless channel in your router configuration to see
if this improves things.
A filter in the mains socket wouldn't help at all.

[slim] Confused about Now Playing settings

2007-11-14 Thread liffy99

What I want the SB3 to do is;
Display the title of the song now playing.
Move on to the next title when selected by remote control.
After 30 secs revert to the Analogue VU meter.

What settings do I need ?

At the moment I get the VU meter to appear as a screensaver but the
track title only appears when it is first selected. If I press "next"
on the remote (and jump to the nest track) the title does not change.

All this is used within the context of searching via Music Folder

What am I doing wrong ?
Thanks

[slim] Really slow menus

2007-11-14 Thread unclepuncle

I have just started using a Mac Mini as a slimserver music server,
instead of using my main PC.

Everything seemed ok at first but now I find that the menus on the SB3
are really slow to respond to the remote. If I want to scroll through
artists or albums etc then it may scroll through a couple but then it
freezes and after 10-20 seconds it cathces up and goes through loads of
them (depending on how many times you've pressed the button on the
rmeote), then it will frezze again, and so on.

I've seen similar problems reported on other threads, and most of these
blame a wireless networking issue, but given that I have no such issue
when I use my main PC (Windows Vista) using the same network, I'm
wondering if it is specific to the Mac and if anyone knows what the
soultion is. It's a real pain because the Mac is in a back bedroom
with no mnonitor, mouse or keyboard, so I can't physically check whats
going on with it unless I bring it down stairs and use the bits from my
main PC setup.

2007-11-14 Thread dcote

hi catbus - it seems my favorite encoder GTune3b1 is the culprit. when i
encoded the offending tracks with xiph's reference at q10, everything
played just fine.

but i agree with you that ultimately the higher bitrates with gtune3b1
are causing the crashes.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox stopping

2007-11-14 Thread y360

To all those having this issue, I advise you to read

http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=6060

Once activated, you will see that when music stops, the decode buffer
keeps increasing while the output buffer is stuck on a very low
number.

By the way, to SlimDevices support:
For a short while the SlimDevices FAQ was replaced by the Logitech FAQ,
and some answers such as the link above were not re-incorporated into
the SlimDevices FAQ when it was reactivated.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox stopping

2007-11-14 Thread y360

To SlimDevices QA - It does not take too much effort to reproduce with
firmware 81.

Set "show buffer fullness" in player display options under
squeezenetwork, play any long Rhapsody playlist, and at some point the
music will stop and you will see that left hand counter keeps
increasing while the right hand counter is stuck at 0.4s or so.
