[slim] Quirks after upgrade to SC7.0
I gave in to temptation and installed the 18th Feb build of SC7.0; but I'm seriously minded to go back to 6.5.4... if I can! I suspect I've managed to screw something up, but heavens knows what, or how. I didn't uninstall 6.5.4 first, but the installation seemed to remove it anyway; and then proceeded to ask me lots of questions, with defaults that showed it hadn't inherited anything from my previous installation. (For example, the music folder defaulted to My Docs\My Music, not to my previous location, G:\My Music.) This setup stuff looks quite nice and friendly, but one black mark as it resized my pre-existing Firefox window (I could've sworn I'd disallowed such behaviour, but evidently not). After the initial scan, things *looked* OK... at first. I quite like the new Default view, but yet again I miss the "add next" buttons; also as I discovered later, I need Fishbone in order to use TrackStat fully. I wanted to install new versions of TrackStat, CustomBrowse, DynamicPlaylist, etc.; so obtained the latest versions and put them into the Plugins folder. No change until I restarted SC (accidentally, when I looked at but didn't really change the "start on login" settings). That's when all hell broke loose! Now, I do get menu items for DynamicPlaylist and TrackStat - but there are no items for Artist, Album, New Music, etc! I only see Music Folder, Favourites, Random Mix and Playlists (and DynamicPlaylist and TrackStat). When I select the Fishbone skin, it goes mad, repeating the header menu and flickering like mad until I choose one of the above options. How could the UI get in such a screwy state? In Default view, clicking on any of the top-level items does nothing - no feedback, no busy cursor, just nothing. But - assuming these are temporary UI glitches that I can escape - I have a separate problem: I can only see one playlist, instead of the hundreds that I had before. My Playlist folder is the same as my Music folder, and almost all of my playlists use relative pathnames (Artist/Album/01-track1.flac, etc.) I can still see the other playlists, via Browse Music Folder, but they all look empty. My fear is that relative pathnames will no longer work. If so, then I'm not interested in SC7! Hard to believe this, though, since many of those playlists were generated by SlimServer, so it chose to use relative paths, not (just) me. The one playlist I *can* see under Playlists is called mediamonkey. And it's completely empty. The file mediamonkey.m3u isn't empty, but again contains relative paths. (There's another playlist of the same name elsewhere in the folder hierarchy, which *is* empty; but I don't see why it would be found but not any others.) What I can see of the scan logs (which isn't much, yet) suggests that scanning completed normally, and didn't bomb out before scanning the playlists. Maybe with some more digging around, or maybe with a bit of backtracking (e.g. removing the plugins), I can make progress; but this is far from the pain-free upgrade for which I was hoping! I've no more time for faffing about with it tonight. Tomorrow, I'll probably reinstall 6.5.4 (which had *better* work!) and leave SC7.0 well alone until it's officially released... or maybe even wait for 7.1! -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43636 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There are probably millions worldwide (potentially 10's of millions) who (like me) will eventually go Blu-ray in the next couple of years now that there is a clear format to buy. As for the AVR there are three different ways to achieve lossless HD audio from an HD/BD player and, depending on your AVR, may not require an new AVR. 1. player decodes audio and sends to AVR via 5.1 or 7.1 analog (requires player and AVR have discrete analog out's/in's respectively) 2. player decodes audio and sends to AVR as PCM (MPCM) via HDMI (requires AVR with HDMI 1.1 audio input) 3. player sends raw audio (bitstream) to AVR via HDMI, AVR decodes audio (requires AVR with HDMI 1.3 and onboard HD audio codecs) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43609 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Looks like Blu-Ray has won
I'm not about to change my main listening environment to more than 2 channels any time soon, even rhough I love multi-channel for film etc. This isn't really because I'm a Luddite, but because I cannot see how I can physically achieve it in my room, and get the same quality, plus the cost would be prohibitive. However, if I could get music in 24/96 (nice) untainted by the loudness wars (vital), and if I could then get that on a hard disc to feed my TP, then I think I would probably become a resonably good blu-ray consumer. On the other hand, Dolby TrueHD is pretty much an extension of DVDA - it still uses MLP for example. I believe this is a packeted format, and as such should be able to be read much more successfully off the disc, than redbook CD. LPCM can be output through the digital outs of a player.. So I'm thinking PS3 -> Transporter, which of course already works, but if we got a lot more choice of discs, it could be cool. Ah but, now we are back to discs for playing, instead as a transport medium for the data. So we are back to ripping, and talking about that on a US hosted web site could be illegal - so I won't. Sigh. Guess it's back to hoping for legal hi-res download opportunities. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43609 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'd add that even blu-ray technology appears to be somewhat irrelevant. As a user of a digital music server I can only imagine a future where we have digital video media centers just like a slimserver. movies and tv shows may live on hard drives (or on an accessible online server) and we use a squeezebox like interface (or apple tv) to access whatever we want to watch. Oh dear. Saw a similar RSS feed last night from Reuters. It is good for Toshiba to make the announcement before their last partner Paramount makes the switch. It is good for all of us with only one format. Blue-ray sales should go up fast and price should start to drop to the $150-$200 level soon. However, for most people, the main cost of the switch is not buying the player, but to upgrade the Receiver. I was surprised last year not seeing music industry using the HD format. Oh dear. Yeah, HD-DVD is dead. Just in the last two weeks Wal Mart & Netflix announced they are completely dropping HD-DVD content and players. Target saw the writing on the wall a year ago and stopped stocking HD-DVD players in their stores. Best Buy announced it will "officially recomend Blu-ray only". Other large retailers will follow. Toshiba is expected to announce (very soon) that they are ending HD-DVD player production and abandoning the format, though this could mean limited production players and content for another year or so. But Toshiba is abandoning the format as they are *bleeding* money on the format. Source material will still be available for a while, but there will be little (if any) new materials released on HD-DVD a year from now. If / when Toshiba officially abandons the format that should release the few remaining studios from their contractural agreements with Toshiba & HD-DVD. [slim] Multiple artwork for one album - possible??
I have asked this question in the (distant) past, but thought I would post again in the hope that anything has changed with the release of Squeezecenter. In older versions of Slimserver it was possible to have two sets of artwork for an album when using the Fishbone skin - one would display in the pane on the left and one in the now playing window on the upper right. This was achieved by simply naming one as thumb and the other as album. This facililty was lost many months ago with updates to Slimserver, and regardless of filenames used, only one set of artwork was displayed in all locations. Does anyone know of any way where it is possible to have one artwork picture for the album itself, and another for each individual song? I have tried to achieve this by embedding artwork with the song files using Media Monkey but have had no success. If anyone knows if this can be done (and how to do it) it would be greatly appreciated. -- PLynas PLynas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11960 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43611 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I use the AutoDisplay plugin to turn off my displays at night. That saves about 6 hours of display time daily. http://www.gwendesign.com/slimserver/dev_software.htm -- 4mula1 SlimServer 6.5.4 + Solaris 10 x86: Because Linux would've been too easy! 4mula1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=10573 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

-- rene50 rene50's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15486 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Dead Transporter
Hi All, I recently suffered a very short power cut ( think nano second ) which rendered my Transporter mute !, the VDU meters were working, as was the "Now Playing" display, BUT ! there was no sound, fearing something awful had happened to my amp / TP, I tried playing it ( the TP ) through another channel - without success, in desperation I searched these forums and discovered the "press 1 while inserting the power cable" trick which brought it back to life ( and me ! ) can anyone tell me what actually happened to the TP ? my SB3 was unaffected as was my amp etc... regards Pete Kane -- pkfox When the going gets weird - the weird turn pro. I see this on both an old slimp3 and an SB2. They have been showing the clock screensaver for years. As I mentioned before, the tracks' least significant digit is left > justified. Thx again for your feedback! I forgot to mention that I already did some experimenting on this but the font used is proportional which results in a misalignment when all single digit tracknumber are indended by a space. They will align properly with the two digit ones. One space is a little too short and two is a bit too far. So I didn't implement it yet because I though the current version is preferred over a misaligned one. There is a solution though and that is that the tracklisting should be placed in a table allowing to align by column. I have to experiment with that but i think it will serious degrade performance of the HTML page in the browser for huge collections because the table structure and nesting tend to have this effect. tamanaco;270498 Wrote: > 2. First guess is that this would be fairly easy to implement. I'll take it into account for the next version. tamanaco;270498 Wrote: > Btw, I think the issue I had with albums with the same name being merged > happened when I selected "Use folder structure to distinguish albums". > If you have any issues, please reply on this thread... > > The tool is getting better and better every week. > > Thanks again...
