On the Audiophile forum there are a group of users who insist that
server decoder Flac sounds better than SB decoded Flac.

Why is it necessary to have ALAC decoder in the SB ? The decoders
required in the SB are the formats that are streamed (e.g. MP3, WMA,
Ogg-Vorbis and possibly AACplus) so that a PC is not necessary.

To provide efficient bandwidth use - a lossless compress format is
needed - hence Flac as Alac and WMA lossles are proprietary.

Makes perfect sense.

The only reason I suggested ALAC in the SB was because of the alac.exe
issue (30 seconds to skip between tracks), but with the new alac.exe
the issue is fixed and all is well!

If transcoding works well enough it's probably not an issue (I don't
have any ALAC files myself). Thing is that if I advise a friend with a
large collection of CD's to go digital it's nice to be able to tell him
to just use XXX format and have it play on his iPod as well as his
slimsystem.

It's possible that the controller doesn't like having to figure out
more than one server IP address. Try doing a factory reset on the
controller and then try to connect to the XP server.

No definitive answer, but I wonder if in moving from Linux to Windows
you have changed the file sharing protocol, eg NFS to Samba? That
would make a difference, I guess.

[slim] at wits end - ready to return

2008-04-03 Thread davec67

macbook pro
duet
squeezecenter 7
all wireless

everything works fine. everything connects, music plays, everyone is
happy

However I take this macbook laptop to work and I want it to make the
duet work with a windows XP laptop that is always home.

Downloaded and installed squeezecenter 7 on the XP laptop. Everything
else is the same. Same wireless hub, duet etc.

Power down macbook, take it out of the picture. Duet controller goes a
bit wierd but lets leave that for now.

Turn on the PC, SC appears to run fine, no errors reported. However it
cannot see player and the duet controller cannot see it. Even if I put
its IP address into the duet controller as the music source ip it can
not see it. Tried rebooting pc numbers of times, refreshing SC pages
etc. Restarted both player and duet controller. Played around with
various combinations of restarting etc. PC can never see player and
duet controller can never see the PC

However and this is the confusing part, if I reset the player and
controller and select squeezenetwork for the player. Squeeze network
works fine, and if I then switch off the controller by holding down the
home button the PC SEES THE player. It can connect, asks me if I want
to switch from squeezenetwork I can select music from the PC, play it
everything works EXCEPT the duet controller is out of the game. No
matter what I do it will not find the player or the PC, even if I put
in the PC's ip address for the music source. If I turn the PC off the
duet controller can see the payer again.

what on earth is going on? If I can connect and play music from the PC
I presume that all the wirewall settings (which is completely off by
the way), hub settings, pc settings are ok.

At any time if I turn my macbook back on the whole duet system works
fine (but picks up the macbook not the PC) so I presume the duet
hardware is ok.

any suggestions on how to fix it or is it liable to be very complicated
and so time consuming that I should just give up now and return the
thing?

No, it's not.

Example: Thirty Years of Maximum R&B by The Who, with several tracks
by The High Numbers. This is a Who album (ie, The High Numbers is the
original name).

It is the "corner cases" that make this a challenge, but the corner
cases are real (also think of Tribute albums, which should have an
Album Artist of whoever the tribute is to). These are different from
the usual "Greatest Hits of the 70's" or whatever type albums which
would not have an album artist...

Complete Disclosure is definitely neccessary to report, even
(especially) in editorials. You cause your own reputation harm by not
being completely transparent.

And (a tad off topic) I agree with Jim on this last thing he said about
openness...

The number one reason I chose Slim over Sonos (And I was about 90%
convinced I would eventually buy a sonos) was not price- (although that
helped), it was the promise with the openess of the platform. These guys
made a rediculously smart decision- because this guaruntees that this
product will maintain momentum. I'm just too sick of going the closed
route to have the manufacturer lose interest and cut a product short. I
have a $250 Sansa Connect that will be losing it's wireless features
next month, because Yahoo Music Unlimited is closing. If it were open,
somebody with a little knowledge could fix it to at least stream with a
UPNP server or Shoutcast. But since it's not open, it was a pointless
investment and thanks to Slim- I vow never to go this pointless and
dangerous route again.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-03 Thread jason3fc

Ok - Just an update to my last post. I just held down the button on the
receiver and tried to reinitiate a connection via wireless. I was
watching the config screen on my router showing DHCP leases, while
standing and simultaneously watching the controller. As soon as it was
done, I noted that in the DHCP list, the reciever had obtained a
legitimate DHCP address: 192.168.1.135 and at the SAME time on the
controller it shows that it got 169.254.140.78.. Weird. I then
proceeded to try to connect to my squeezecenter and it worked! I
unplugged my wired connection to do this, so Im not sure if something
is wrong in my network, but I have 3 other devices which are getting
IPs over wired DHCP just fine.

Nevertheless, the report of the local IP the controller gave me was
wrong, since it really did get a valid IP.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-03 Thread jason3fc

Trying the latest (2166) build just mentioned has made things much worse
for me. I now can isolate this down to some problem with my receiver. I
can connect to my wireless network with my controller just fine, and I
can even find and control the SB1 in the bedroom fine every time.
However the receiver is continually not getting an IP from dhcp every
time I try to hold down the button to initiate a new connection. It
flashes red, and then on the controller it does its thing when I tell
it to set up, but every time it ends up getting a local 169.254
address. This happens with it connected via wired or wireless. Then
when I try to find a music source, of course it cant find one, since it
has no connection, and then the "Choose Player" disappears from the
controller menu, and in order to get it to return I have to restart the
controller.

I was by some fluke able to get the receiver connected once tonight, by
doing the procedure above and then going to squeezecenter and the
receiver showed up, and would even let me control it, even though it
wasn't working via the controller. Once I queued something up for it to
play via squeezecenter it then proceeded to show up on the controller
and I could see it. But as soon as I switched to my bedroom SB1 and
switched back to the receiver, sure enough it was gone again, and I
couldn't control it or hear it from anywhere.

I was seriously considering putting two of these in the attic for sound
into bathrooms, but I'm second guessing this now as it seems it doesn't
reliably keep a connection.

This is the second or third time I have had a problem like this since I
got it a few weeks back, previously I eventually got it connected again
without explanation and it worked for several days straight (albeit
with it dropping from the menu from time to time - as my original post
stated, but I could always bring it back by rebooting the controller)
now I'm back to this same situation with the receiver not getting an ip
again.

Besides disabling DHCP on the router as described in the instructions
is there a way to force it to use a static IP? I want to leave DHCP
turned on for other stuff, but thinking maybe I can force the receiver
into a static ip if possible.

My two SB3s are always plugged in. I realized that my log grab in my

similar error messages from this morning. I have a difficult time

[slim] SC Doesn't Stop Repeating

2008-04-03 Thread stinkpot

Hi all,

I've just upgraded to SC 7.0 from SS 6.5.

[To the developers -- It's terrific. I love the iTunes integration!]

Unfortunately, I've got one little bug I'd like to try and figure out.
My playlists don't stop repeating! (And, of course, I've unchecked the
repeat button.) Does anyone know what might be causing this behavior?

FWIW: I'm running SC 7.0.1 on Debian Linux. My linux box is running an
MP3 player (madplay) that plays streams from localhost/stream.mp3. If
madplay doesn't detect an active stream, it waits 10 seconds and then
searches for one again. (Could this be causing my weird behavior?)

Thanks all!

I of course had to re-enter all the network info on the SB, including
that selfsame static IP.

So, once again, before Factory Reset, plugins no worky. AFTER Factory
Reset, plugins worky. That is all I'm saying. I don't care why it
worked, it worked. For me. YMMV

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it

Ben,
I went ahead and installed the latest nightly on WinXP. I also
installed the XM Radio & IR Blaster plugins. My 770 has the most
recent Nokia OS and I'm using the default Opera browser. If I do a
search, the search button doesn't work. When I tap it an orange box
around the button appears, but the search doesn't happen. Same for the
clear button.

In te XM Radio plugin, the station lists don't appear after selecting
browse presets, browse genres or browse stations. When I try quick
play, it acts just like search, an orange box appears, but the commend
doesn't execute.

I'll check it out further tommorrow.

Thanks for your help!

[slim] analog output lower on SBR than SB3?

2008-04-03 Thread aubuti

Is the volume of the SBR's analog outputs at full volume slightly lower
than the output from an SB2 or SB3? I vaguely recall seeing something
about this a few weeks ago, but I can't find the thread now. I ask
because I just swapped an SB2 and SBR and the SBR sounds quieter at the
same volume level on the amp (SBR/SB2 volume at max and using replaygain
in both cases). Thanks.

While we would very much like to have it work "out of the box" the
reality of networking is that there are differences--sometimes
significant--between routers and devices. We simply can't provide a
guarantee that it will work in every single situation. We do our best
to test as mnay configurations as possible, and certainly the most
common ones, but even that won't predict all possible problems.

We are trying to gather as much information as possible, and are
actively working on the problem. As Richard said, we've not been able
to reproduce some of these problems in our facilities making it harder
to find and fix. We have been making progress and will keep at it.
Please continue to provide feedback as to what works and what doesn't
so we can try to address the problem.

There's a new firmware build available and we'd appreciate it if you
could test it out. Please see this message

Which is exactly why "Off" made it back into the Controller's menu. It
keeps the behavior of the Squeezebox Receiver consistent with all our
other players when they are synchronized.

Let me ask you this: did you test the Duet--a commercially available
version--prior to posting your cnet review? Now let me answer it for
you: you did not. You purport to be fair, but you did not disclose
that fact in your review. Did you expect that the community would
welcome you with open arms? They feel like a product that they've
built was unjustly portrayed; I agree with them. Your "review" was,
simply put, an attempt to sow FUD.

Again, you are entitled to your opinion. Others are within their
rights to question it. If there is a personal attack--and, no, we
don't consider Robin's response to you to have crossed that line--we
will deal with it as per our forum guidelines.

You may act as aggrieved as you wish. Petulance is hardly an endearing
trait, however, and will likely make your time and efforts here far less
productive. If you really want to be perceived as fair, amend your
review on c|net and disclose both your prior association with Sonos as
a forum admin, as well as the fact that you did not actually use a
Squeezebox Duet prior to posting (using a borrowed beta version doesn't
count). I think that would go a long way in creating a positive
reputation here on our forums.

Personally, I'm not interested in the whole Duet vs. Sonos debate. We
build different products for different kinds of users. Sonos went
about solving the problem of getting music from PC to stereo by
building a private, completely controlled island; this gives them an
advantage in ease of installation and multi-room sync of specific
sources of music (but not all sources). We built a "freeport" where we
can *integrate* fully into a home network environment and we opened our
source code to the public so they can extend functionality, add
features, and build the solution they are most interested in; our
advantage then is openess, lower total ownership costs, and
flexibility. Which one is most suitable for any given person is a
question best answered by that individual.

Re: [slim] When will the Duet be available for purchase in Australia

2008-04-03 Thread Apteryx

That's true of NZ as well - they operate via a distributor and the
listed price of $699 from Logitech is just the RRP - retailers would
presumably arrive at their own price, when they can get the product.
(The buy price from the distributor allows a good deal of room for them
to manoeuvre if they want to). Hope we don't get caught by the same

The kwiki-to-mediawiki migration tool just didn't work. None of the
links came over, the formatting was a disaster, and it was simply too
broken to use. We've got some of our engineers looking at fixing the

You posted an "authoritative" review, under the name ro53ben on c/net
without ever having used the commercially available version of Duet.
In fairness, you claim to have used one on loan from a "friend". In my
opinion, you are far from the fair-and-balanced perspective you wish to
portray.

Personal attacks are not acceptable, and if anyone does attack you in a
manner that we find violates our forum guidlelines, you may rest assured
that we will remove that post. Calling into question your intentions
behind posting here, as well as other forums (on A/V sites, cnet, etc.)
hardly qualifies. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but be
prepared to defend it. As Harry S. Truman was fond of saying: "If you

I tried the various javascript solutions posted here for getting ITunes
artwork to show on the controller but they seem to be PC only and I'm
on a Mac. At the beginning of this thread was a suggestion to try the
'embed artwork' script at Doug's Scripts. It took about 5 minutes to
download and install and just another minute to test on a single CD.
It's works really well. I told it to do the rest of my cd's (a little
over 400) and went to work. When I got home all of the album covers
displayed properly on my controller. It looks like when I RIP
additional CD's I just have to select them and run the script on just
the new ones. Nice.

Just managed to get onto someone else in Logitech. They tell me that the
Duet will not be available in Australia until late May or possibly early
June. The explanation was time taken to meet Australian safety standards
testing requirements. Another interesting fact I learned was that
Logitech does not actually trade in Australia, so the $599 price for
the Duet on the Logitech site is purely indicative as you cannot

2008-04-03 Thread bpa

I can make 404 happen at will without any player connected - so the
problem is player independent and resetting the SB will not cure the
problem.

However, it is possible that your browser is caching the 404 response
and this cached response may be related to the player (some player
specific info is in the URL). Resetting the SB may have caused a new
IP to be assigned to SB or invalidated some other cached info by virtue
of the reset.

Good point. I should have specified that, prior to doing the Factory
Reset, I had uninstalled SC7 via Control Panel AND deleted the
Squeezecenter directories (including all subdirectories) in both
Program Files and Program Data directories, then Re-installed SC7, set
up everything again, and still had the same problem.

I THEN did the Factory Reset on the SB3, and all was suddenly well
again.

I just wish I had done the Factory Reset first. I had luckily backed
up my Prefs and Plugins beforehand, so after restoring those to their
respective directories, everything was back to the lovely way it was
before the problem occurred.

I love love LOVE my Squeezybox, and can't WAIT to get a brand new
Squeezebox Controller to go with it!

Did you write that review [1] based on having actually got your hands on
a Duet? The whole thing is FUD.

Would you like to tell us about your involvement with the Sonos user
forums, how you were a moderator, but were removed when you tried to
throw your weight around?

By all means give us a fair and objective account of the Sonos gear, but
don't come the "I'm a neutral reviewer" crap.

To legally import good from the US, you pay the cost price in the US,
then you add on the local sales tax in the US, then you add on shipping
to the UK. Total that.

Then you add on import duty as a percentage of that total - I believe
it was 10% last time I looked. Note that total.

Then you add on VAT @ 17.5%

Having done this to the retail price of a Sonos in California, adding
on 8% sales tax, then shipping, then duty, then VAT...and converted to
GBP, I found a price not massively different to the UK retail price.
Last time I calculated, the break even was somewhere between 1.6-1.7$
to the £. Currently the £ is stronger, so the import price is cheaper,
I think it was about £50 on a Sonos bundle.

Personally, I think the £50 fully justifies the UK retailer handling
and local warranty. Marketing of the product would cost more here too.

This is why I felt the article totally inaccurate, it's a topic that's
been well covered in many places.

Re: [slim] SC 7.0.1 - 404 Not Found: settings/plugins/SqueezeScrobbler/settings/basic.html

2008-04-03 Thread bpa

The cause of the 404 message is the fact the Plugins install.xml files
will be read by SC no matter where they are in the server/Plugins or
server/Slim/Plugin directory and subdirectories.

However if the code of the Plugin is not in the correct place - when SC
looks for the Settings page (as defined in install.xml) it cannot be
found.

An uninstall does not remove user installed plugins.

If the user uninstalls SC and doesn't delete the Plugins and associated
directories left behind after uninstallation, the next re-install of SC
will result in the same 404 problem.

Haha, I didn't either...

[highly eneducated guess]
Some bad bit of data messed up the SB3's ability to use plugins. The
plugins still loaded into SC7, but any calls by the server to the HTML
settings page within each plugin made the server say "Huh? What are
these 'Plugins' of which you speak?"
[/highly eneducated guess]

I'm just saying that I had the exact same problem/symptoms (no plugins
working, 404 error on settings pages in SC7), and the Factory Reset
absolutely fixed it.

I'm glad your solution worked for you. But if anyone else (yourself
included) encounters the same problem in the future, and doesn't want
to hack the registry, etc., you/they may want to
try resetting first :)

Happy Squeezing!

You can also use the plugin "The Synchronizer" which has options to a:
synchronize all players to a given master, or b: create predefined sets
of players which are synchronized together (sync sets) and select them
easily.

Currently, it doesn't support the Squeezebox Controller, so you'd have
to use either a Squeezebox with a display, or the web interface, but
hopefully I'll get some time "real soon now" to remedy that problem.
Maybe even this weekend if it rains.

Makes perfect sense.

The only reason I suggested ALAC in the SB was because of the alac.exe
issue (30 seconds to skip between tracks), but with the new alac.exe
the issue is fixed and all is well!

That's only because Apple keep ALAC locked up. That's obviously not in
your best interest, because it made your life difficult, and there's no
technical reason for it, so why do it? I don't see why you'd continue to

Hi,
Honestly I cannot see how this solves the "404 Not Found" issue when
configuring the plugins on the server. But anyhow :-) I played a blit
more with this and finally got it working.

I am running Windows XP Norwegian Locale.
I ( once again ) deinstalled everything affiliaed with SqueezeCenter ,
and cleaned up everey trace i could find on the disk drive. Then I
searched through the registry and deleted anything connected with
SqueezeCenter , BIG NOTE ( Not for the Faint of heart.. not recommended
on supported in any way :- )

This at least got me up and running my favourite plugins again

Re: [slim] ALAC and FLAC

SC lets you choose - Apple does not. Why won't Apple support Flac or
WMA Lossless ?

On the Audiophile forum there are a group of users who insist that
server decoder Flac sounds better than SB decoded Flac.

Why is it necessary to have ALAC decoder in the SB ? The decoders
required in the SB are the formats that are streamed (e.g. MP3, WMA,
Ogg-Vorbis and possibly AACplus) so that a PC is not necessary.

To provide efficient bandwidth use - a lossless compress format is
needed - hence Flac as Alac and WMA lossles are proprietary.

I have this debate a lot with my buddy. He has all his music in FLAC,
me in ALAC as I own an iPod.

I personally think ALAC is excellent as, not only is it lossless, it's
very easy to move to another format in the future if required. It also
supported embedded art first, which was a killer feature for me at the
time.

If I need to convert to something else, a couple of clicks in iTunes
and I can convert my entire library to AIFF and onwards to FLAC etc.
Going the other way FROM FLAC isn't so easy at all.

I recently downloaded a free album that came in FLAC format and
couldn't get it on my iPod without burning it to CD-Audio and
re-ripping.

That was a very different thing. It was in fact a bug in the SB1, where
the decoder would not output a valid s/pdif signal for the first couple
MP3 frames of a stream. We later added a workaround for it, where we
would send a few frames of silence before sending the track. This
affected the initial start of playback (eg jumping to a new track) but
not track transitions.

SB2/SB3/TP/SBR don't have any such issues - the only time the s/pdif is
ever interrupted is when changing sample rates, where it's necessary.

Re: [slim] How to avoid the 'click' when a track starts

2008-04-03 Thread ptrainer

This is pretty interesting because when I first got my Squeezebox1 I
tried digital output via coax and optical into my Onkyo tx800 and
experienced a truncation of the first 1/2 second of audio at the start
of every new track. If the song began with a drumbeat, I'd only hear
the second half of the beat. I switched to analog output and all was
fine.

When I received my duet I tried digital output again with the SBR and
still have the same issue. I don't get a click, like you, but maybe
that's just the different manner in which my Onkyo's DAC has trouble
locking at the start of a signal. Unfortunately the only equipment I
own with digital outs are my SBs and the only DAC I own which converts
external signals is the Onkyo so I can't compare with other devices.
Still, your issue definitely sounds like a DAC one to me.

Finally solved it by doing a factory reset on the SB3 (unplug SB3, hold

Hope this helps.

[slim] SC7.0 sometimes doesn't start up

2008-04-03 Thread Sam Lowry

WinXP, 764MB RAM, very large HD.

I never had problems until I updated to 7.0. At least every other time
I reboot my squeezecenter server computer, the little SB icon keeps
blinking and says Squeezecenter is starting. But it never does.

I have excluded the Squeezecenter directory from my virus scanner, so I
don't think that's the problem.

Where do I begin to figure out why?

:) heh, I knew as soon as I typed that it wouldn't go without
comment...yes, quite so...Off = Pause is an oversimplification to be
sure. Perhaps a different answer would be: "for the typical user,
'player off' is a feature that doesn't really add much value except too
provide the comfortable convention of 'off'".

I use IRBlaster, so player off turns off my amp, so it has added
meaning for me as well.

Pardon my pedantry... Off and Pause are different. Turn off a player
that's been synced with another player and the other player keeps going
through the playlist. Pause a player that's been synced with another
player and the whole sync group goes silent and maintains the current
position in the playlist.

That's a great decision. Those who use something like
PowerCenter/BottleRocket could retain the option, and everybody else
could ditch it.

"Off" is really a convention with the Squeezebox players, and some
users are not comfortable without it. In reality the receiver is an
always-on device, and what you are doing by hitting "off" is really
hitting "pause".

We are targetting for release 7.1 a customizable home menu on the
controller, so if you want to remove that option from the controller
you will be able to.

Very little! There are a few reasons it's useful (switches off the
output lines which can help some amps auto-swtich) but in general it's
there on the SBR and all the other SB players because people complain

The answer I received a few days ago was:

"The fix I provided works with SB, TR and SBR, but needs
to be verified by our QA team first and if they approve it,
it is planned to include new firmware into the next bug fix
release which would be 7.0.1.

And to answer your next question, no, I have no

So, we just have to wait

This is definitely a problem in your receiver/processor. It should
never lose lock just because the signal is all-zeroes.

-I believe SlimD/LT products have contributed greatly towards the
coming-of-age of this exciting trend.-

They certainly have. I mean, the rich has always had access to neat
toys- so Sonos hasn't done much to make the world a better place.

Not that the sonos wasn't good- but that it was priced higher than the
value it provided- in an effort only to be purchased by people who
literally had too much money to spend in a lifetime.

Slim Devices makes this- and now it will become mainstream! The
industry will not beable to ignore that this is the future- and where
the money is.
