Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags
It works fine for not showing artists in the artist list if that is their only performance. However, it also doesn't allow you to go (following artist link, drilling down by tag) to other albums of that artist if there are any. You're right. That seems undesirable to me - it only shows other albums that the track artist has performed as a track artist. It should display the same list as navigating to that artist. I had a look at the link, (eg. http://localhost:9000/Default/browsedb.html?hierarchy=contributor,album,tracklevel=1contributor.id=703contributor.role=TRACKARTISTplayer=00%3A04%3A20%3A06%3A38%3A3c) I can see contributor.role=TRACKARTIST. Similarly, the album artist link has (contributor.role=ALBUMARTIST) in the link. If you remove that part of the link (eg. so it becomes http://localhost:9000/Default/browsedb.html?hierarchy=contributor,album,tracklevel=1contributor.id=703player=00%3A04%3A20%3A06%3A38%3A3c), then you'll see all albums that the artist has performed on (whether as an album artist, band, track artist, composer, etc). A nice way to listen to your music through Squeezecenter: Stream it to your wifi cell phone :) Several newer cell phones have now wifi capabilites, it is then possible to listen to streamed audio music for free. Because I have ALBUM ARTIST set, and that's what I want SC to key on. Most of my desired functionality will be achieved by turning off, or overriding, the logic that says: Albums with tracks where artists aren't all the same, implies an compilation. You're trying to second guess, where there is no need. I've said where I want this album to appear by either setting Album Artist or Compilation explicitly. The logic I want is: if there is a consistent Album Artist = not a compilation and this overrides the current rule multiple artists = Compilation. I've hacked the code to remove the multiple artists = Compilation and it worked fine (for me) - where there is a album artist, it gets listed there. When I've said it's a compilation it's under Various Artists. The only down side is that every track artist gets displayed in the Artist List which others might dislike. So anyway, rebooted the Controller after factory reset, rebooted the Receiver, went into Setup Receiver, held down Receiver button to get LED flashing red, which brought up the wireless/ethernet option screen, but any attempt to connect to ethernet fails pretty much straight away, followed by the try again/skip this step screen. Re: [slim] Changing SB Receiver from wireless to ethernet
First of all, I found and downloaded the Duet User Guide and followed *to the letter* the instructions for setting up a Hybrid installation after doing a factory reset of the Controller. That was successful in my workroom. So off we go to the loft (where the Receiver is to be installed), and as per usual: no ethernet port lights. Well folks, you're not going to believe this - I know it floored me. I decided to try the Receiver plugged in to various ethernet switches that are around the house. It worked in all of them except the one in the loft, which was happy to talk to various other devices but wouldn't play nice with the Receiver. I guess it must just be some weird incompatibility between the chipsets used in the SBR and that particular switch. So I did some swapping around of switches and we're in business :-) If anyone's interested, the switch that wouldn't talk to the SBR was a PC-Line 5-port one. (I believe PC-Line is PC World's house brandname here in the UK). The one I replaced it with was another cheap 5-port one marked as Edimax (no, I've never heard of them either). -- cliveb Transporter - ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46254 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Stops between tracks with Rhapsody while trying to sync
This has been going on for many months now. I keep updating the software hoping for a fix, but... Also noticed several other threads covering stops between tracks, but none give a solution. I have three SB2 with the latest software/firmware updates (again, same bug with older versions). When playing tracks from Rhapsody, playback stalls often between tracks and occasionally during tracks. Hitting play on the remote or within SC will start the next song, sometimes I have to hit play several times - especially in SC. I usually have 2-3 SB2 synchronized. It seems like the sync process is causing the stops. When I turn off they sync, the playback seems to work without a hitch. -- rickbray rickbray's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8149 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46291 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So probably what's really needed is Home-Album Artist listing, but that's another story. Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags
FYI, to possibly add to the confusion. :D Mp3tag, a leading tagging tool, maps what is calls BAND to MP3 IDv2.3 TPE2. This is fairly normal. It also directly maps it's BAND variable to WM/AlbumArtist for WMA content, and to the aART atom for M4A content. (These two are real Album Artist tags.) So, at least for 3 media formats with non-'free-form tagging (MP3, WMA M4A)... in Mp3tag, what it calls BAND is really Album Artist based on the cross-mapping. Anyway, like it or not, TPE2 is a popular de facto standard for Album Aritst for MP3. iTunes, WinAmp, Mp3Tag, MediaMonkey, Sonos, Rockbox, Explorer shell, WMP 10/11, etc. It's a shame ID3v2 was half-baked at design, but we're stuck with it. Slim should offer a simple setting to treat TPE2 MP3 as Album Artist as much as WMA WM/AlbumArtist and M4A aART. -- grommet grommet's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5959 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Adding support for M4A file properties to Windows Explorer
Hi, I use iTunes for ripping my CDs to M4A files, I use Mp3Tag to edit the tags, and I use SqueezeCenter / Transporter for selecting music and playing it. However what I miss is the ability to view M4A tag data and cover art in Windows Explorer, and to use Windows Search to find tracks and albums. (Native Windows provides support for MP3 files but not for M4A). ... So I wrote my own Windows Shell Extension that adds support for M4A files to Windows Vista Explorer. http://www.whitebear.ch/music This shell extension could be a nice extra for SB / Transporter users. -- AndrewFG Regards, AndrewFG AndrewFG's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15838 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46301 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Building Playlists
There are 2 issues here: 1. I have spent countless hours trying to get this setup to perform as promised. WAY beyond any 30 day guarantee. This is mostly because any technical support offered (for any IT product) automatically makes you assume it is YOUR fault! I have tried every new version of Slimserver, SqueezeCentre and RAIDiator issued and they have ALL performed like dogs. My library is well ordered and I spent a long time converting all tracks to the same format (AAC). I put 1gB of RAM in the ReadyNAS and that DID lift the performance from appalling to just dreadful. Since the ReadyNAS, Squeezeboxes and Slimserver were sold as a package, I would have expected them (naively) to work out of the box. Which part of this statement is unreasonable? 2. I would expect the vendors (Netgear and Logitech) to work TOGETHER to solve this problem, not in seeming isolation and denial of responsibility for a product combination which obviously is not fit for purpose. If you are selling a 1Tb server with a promise of music streaming to a specifically named product, it should be capable of working as well with 1Tb of stored music as with 1Gb. Size should not be an issue. Is there anything wrong with that assumption? What you are suggesting is that the adverts recommending this combination were misleading and, although I can store music on the ReadyNAS and use the Squeezeboxes to stream it, I need to use an interim computer to do the work that SlimServer/SqueezeCenter reckons it should be able to do on the original combination. -- larrettp larrettp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10191 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45261 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Cant play downloads i have bought
One workaround you can use is burn your music to a CD, rip it from the CD, and then encode it in a format that the SB can handle -- mp3 or FLAC. The downside of using mp3 in this case is that you're losing data twice -- iTunes throws away some data when they encode it (unless it's Apple lossless), and then you throw more away when you go to mp3. I try to avoid iTunes whenever I can. Occasionally they have something available exclusively that I want. In those cases, I get it, burn it to a CD, rip it to WAV, and then encode it as FLAC. Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags
Not true. It displays as Album by Artist, what the internal representation of this is I don't care. That image is a picture of iTunes - what relevance has that to the content of your SqueezeCenter library? Out of curiosity, what version of iTunes do you use? I have v7.6.2.9 which allows the user to show Artist, Album Artist and/or Sort Album Artist. I can't see an Album by Artist column like yours. Either way, whenever you see album artist in iTunes, for mp3 files it's actually the Band tag that it is stored in, due to it mis-using that tag. Album Artist is the column title that you can see in the grid, and it groups songs in the list by that when in album view display mode, but that's about all that iTunes will do with it. eg. if you set an album artist, it won't appear in the artist filter. Only the content of artists appears in the list, and you get all artists even if they only appear on one song in a compilation. So in iTunes if you have an album with songs by different artists, and set it as not a compilation album and set an album artist (really this is band), then that band will not appear in the list of artists. SqueezeCenter is much more intelligent and conformant to standards. I dare say that something will be changed to allow it to work in a non-standard way to make it act like iTunes. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
