When I get to the config screen asking for my username and password, I
enter the correct information but it doesn't recognize my account. I
can log into the squeeze network web page without any problem. This is
only happening when I am trying to configure squeeze center.

Are you using some special characters in your password (eg. accents, umlauts,
non-latin stuff etc.)? Could you please set logging for squeezenetwork in
Settings-Advanced-Logging to debug, try again, and upload server.log to this
thread?

I now experience exactly the same issue: some files with special
characters (eg. ü in Ouvertüre) do not play. I am using the iTunes
integration and all my files are in Apple Lossless format.

Would they work if they were mp3 or flac? Are they showing up in SC at all? Did
it work in SC 7.0?

I wonder whether it's the transcoder which doesn't understand the file paths,
now that they're fixed in SC.

Each of the forums is configured a little differently. Some of them
don't permit the embedding of images using the BBCode IMG tag, but you
can upload an image as an attachment, within the size limits set. Use
the 'Manage Attachments' button.

You could view this as going through an initial phase of hoping it will
stay looking good as new. It's a natural psychological response to
anything you buy. The reaction to the first blemish is always one of
disappointment.

But nothing stays in mint condition forever. After a while, objects
acquire a patina of use, and their scuffs and dings become an intrinsic
part of their character - almost a mark of their usefulness. So once
your Controller is smothered in scratches, it'll be no big deal.

No it isn't good enough. Quite contrary. The most advertised tagging
program here, mp3tag, allows not to change a file update date
(preserves it, to be exact)

You should untick Mp3Tag Options Tags Preserve file modification Time when

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-14 Thread Phil Meyer
It works fine for not showing artists in the artist list if that is
their only performance. However, it also doesn't allow you to go
(following artist link, drilling down by tag) to other albums of that
artist if there are any.

You're right. That seems undesirable to me - it only shows other albums that
the track artist has performed as a track artist. It should display the same
list as navigating to that artist.

I had a look at the link, (eg.
http://localhost:9000/Default/browsedb.html?hierarchy=contributor,album,tracklevel=1contributor.id=703contributor.role=TRACKARTISTplayer=00%3A04%3A20%3A06%3A38%3A3c)
 I can see contributor.role=TRACKARTIST.

Similarly, the album artist link has (contributor.role=ALBUMARTIST) in the link.

If you remove that part of the link (eg. so it becomes
http://localhost:9000/Default/browsedb.html?hierarchy=contributor,album,tracklevel=1contributor.id=703player=00%3A04%3A20%3A06%3A38%3A3c),
then you'll see all albums that the artist has performed on (whether as an
album artist, band, track artist, composer, etc).

I see no reason for filtering the link to a specific contributor role. I think
that's a bug.

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-14 Thread Phil Meyer
If I understand correctly, it sounds to me as though bullgod's
requirements could be met with the following additional logic:

If every track has TRACKARTIST=Artist X (even if some tracks have
multiple TRACKARTIST tags) and ALBUMARTIST is not already set, then set
ALBUMARTIST=Artist X.

No, what he's asking for is not possible, because he has used a single artist
name, not multiple artists. It works in iTunes because they have used the frig
of using Band to mean album artist, and he's got a single string literal in the
band tag for each song (which may contain several artist names in the one band
name).

The scanner would have to cope with looking for sub-string matches in the
artist tags. It would then have to decide that as a substring of each artist
string matches for every song, set the album artist to that substring. It
would also have to guess when that sub-string is not actually an artist, etc.
Eg. an album with songs by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, should not
be known as album artist = The .

There is no problem to solve in this example. The tags aren't set right.

Try the faad2 solution described in post 13 of this thread.

[slim] Squeezecenter and audio streaming on Symbian OS, UIQ3 - iPhone?

2008-04-14 Thread remd

A nice way to listen to your music through Squeezecenter:
Stream it to your wifi cell phone :)
Several newer cell phones have now wifi capabilites, it is then
possible to listen to streamed audio music for free.
I tried this with a Sony-Ericsson W960, that runs Symian Os 9.1 and
UIQ3.
I had to install 3rd party software, called LCG Jukebox, because
although it is a walkman phone, it didnt seem to be able to play
streaming audio. I then entered the http://192.168.x.x:9000/stream.mp3
url in LCG Jukebox, and 192.168.x.x:9000 in the web browser, and could
then listen to the music I have on my computer, and to Internet radios,
services etc.. :)
In my case it also helped to pass through the proxy auth this way (Have
Squeezecenter as proxy, and Squeezecenter using a proxy that passes on
the proxy auth to the 1rst proxy)

A question, has anyone done this with the iPhone ? natively, or with a
3rd party soft ?

No. I don't think it will. Because I have ALBUM ARTIST set, and that's
what I want SC to key on.

Most of my desired functionality will be achieved by turning off, or
overriding, the logic that says:
Albums with tracks where artists aren't all the same, implies an
compilation.

You're trying to second guess, where there is no need.
I've said where I want this album to appear by either setting Album
Artist or Compilation explicitly.

The logic I want is:
if there is a consistent Album Artist = not a compilation
and this overrides the current rule multiple artists = Compilation.

I've hacked the code to remove the multiple artists = Compilation
and it worked fine (for me) - where there is a album artist, it gets
listed there.
When I've said it's a compilation it's under Various Artists.

The only down side is that every track artist gets displayed in the
Artist List which others might dislike.

So probably what's really needed is Home-Album Artist listing, but
that's another story.

 Quite awful in fact.

Not true. It displays as Album by Artist, what the internal

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-14 Thread bullgod

Philip Meyer;291160 Wrote:
If I understand correctly, it sounds to me as though bullgod's
requirements could be met with the following additional logic:

If every track has TRACKARTIST=Artist X (even if some tracks have
multiple TRACKARTIST tags) and ALBUMARTIST is not already set, then
 set
 ALBUMARTIST=Artist X.

No, what he's asking for is not possible, because he has used a single
artist name, not multiple artists. It works in iTunes because they
have used the frig of using Band to mean album artist, and he's got a
single string literal in the band tag for each song (which may contain
several artist names in the one band name).

The scanner would have to cope with looking for sub-string matches in
the artist tags. It would then have to decide that as a substring of
each artist string matches for every song, set the album artist to that
substring. It would also have to guess when that sub-string is not
actually an artist, etc. Eg. an album with songs by The Beatles and
The Rolling Stones, should not be known as album artist = The .

There is no problem to solve in this example. The tags aren't set
 right.

 Phil

No, it wouldn't. It's already worked who the Album is by.

For example in my previous post, the image shows an Album by Frank
Sinatra list under Home-Artist-Various Artist
there is nothing stopping this Album being listed under
HOME-Artist-Frank Sinatra.

The scanner does not need to go through the sub string album tags, to
find the Album artist. It can use the one explicitly given in the tags.

The scanner is demonstrably already determining the correct Album
Artist, it's just I question of listing it in the appropriate place.

Your example is inappropriate, in that case there is unlikely be an
explicit Album Artist, in which case SC can fall back on Various
Artists.

Hi All

Is it possible to create a playlist from a service such as Slacker with

the web interface to save the station as a playlist but when the
playlist is selected, the connection fails for some reason.

Amy I doing something wrong or is this not supported? I ask as I'd like

Re: [slim] Changing SB Receiver from wireless to ethernet

2008-04-14 Thread cliveb

cliveb;291229 Wrote:
OK - finally got this working.
Well, I spoke too soon. After getting it working on ethernet in my
workroom, I took it to its installation position (which is on the same
ethernet LAN), plugged it in, and guess what? The ethernet port lights
did not come on, and it connected to the wireless network! I verified
that the port I plugged into on the switch was working, by moving some
of the other patch cables around. No amount of factory resetting of
Receiver and Controller would bring the ethernet port to life.

So I brought it back down to my workroom, and now the ethernet port
lights come on, but any attempt to connect to ethernet fails. I've
rebooted the router (which runs the DHCP server), removed the
Receiver's DHCP licence from the router, but that didn't help.

I tried holding in the front button while applying power, which caused
the LED to enter some sort of cycle: red, green, blue, white, off, red,
green, blue, white, etc. It does two complete cycles of
red/green/blue/white/off every 5 seconds. While in this state, the
ethernet port lights blink as follows: orange alone, orange+green,
green alone. Checked the wiki but couldn't find a description of what
the LED cycle or the port lights mean - I'm guessing it's some sort of
internal test.

So anyway, rebooted the Controller after factory reset, rebooted the
Receiver, went into Setup Receiver, held down Receiver button to get
LED flashing red, which brought up the wireless/ethernet option screen,
but any attempt to connect to ethernet fails pretty much straight away,
followed by the try again/skip this step screen.

It really should not be this difficult.

Most of what is you have said is true, but I don't subscribe to the

the front face region. I have 3 SB3's and a Transporter, none of that
equipment has any scratches. Those devices weren't designed to be
portable/handled on a daily basis. I was just saying the front face on
the Duet's Controller could have been alot better. For instance the
clear front face could have been recessed to prevent surface scratches.
I already mentioned different materials, it just bothers me that I

To support the proper handling of complex data structures requires a

Re: [slim] Changing SB Receiver from wireless to ethernet

2008-04-14 Thread cliveb

First of all, I found and downloaded the Duet User Guide and followed
*to the letter* the instructions for setting up a Hybrid installation
after doing a factory reset of the Controller. That was successful in
my workroom. So off we go to the loft (where the Receiver is to be
installed), and as per usual: no ethernet port lights.

Well folks, you're not going to believe this - I know it floored me. I
decided to try the Receiver plugged in to various ethernet switches
that are around the house. It worked in all of them except the one in
the loft, which was happy to talk to various other devices but wouldn't
play nice with the Receiver. I guess it must just be some weird
incompatibility between the chipsets used in the SBR and that
particular switch. So I did some swapping around of switches and we're
in business :-)

If anyone's interested, the switch that wouldn't talk to the SBR was a
PC-Line 5-port one. (I believe PC-Line is PC World's house brandname
here in the UK). The one I replaced it with was another cheap 5-port
one marked as Edimax (no, I've never heard of them either).

I couldn't agree more. I'm not so bothered about the black casing but
the perspex display facia is just not up to the job. If mine continue
to scratch at the rate they have I will not be able to read the
displays at all in a years time, let alone two. The perspex is OK for a
device that does not get knocked around a lot but is the wrong material
for a hand held controller (especially one costing as much as the
Controller).

I am certain that Logitech will have to address this issue soon and
will start producing them with tougher perspex/glass. I just hope that
they supply the new display facia as a spare part and that it can be
easily replaced.

[slim] Stops between tracks with Rhapsody while trying to sync

2008-04-14 Thread rickbray

This has been going on for many months now. I keep updating the
software hoping for a fix, but... Also noticed several other threads
covering stops between tracks, but none give a solution.

I have three SB2 with the latest software/firmware updates (again, same
bug with older versions). When playing tracks from Rhapsody, playback
stalls often between tracks and occasionally during tracks. Hitting
play on the remote or within SC will start the next song, sometimes I
have to hit play several times - especially in SC.

I usually have 2-3 SB2 synchronized. It seems like the sync process is
causing the stops. When I turn off they sync, the playback seems to
work without a hitch.

No. I don't think it will. Because I have ALBUM ARTIST set, and that's

 overriding, the logic that says:

In order to achieve what you want, just set COMPILATION tag to 0 for
every track that contains the artist you DO wish to show on the artist
list.

I don't like this solution because it is undocumented and it is
internal and can change with the next change to scaner code. But still
cleaner than changing a code itself.

Point of my post is, there are ways to recognize that the file has
changed and re-scan it beyond checking the change date. No need to
check all tags either (ZZolx). And the current solution is only half
baked. As I said, check how it's done in incremental backup programs.

That depends on the program. It can be last-modified-time, size, md4
or some other hash.

Computing md4 on every file would be rather time consuming for a fast
scan: it should not be the default.

You, too, have missed the point.

The point is not that artist fail to appear in the Artist list.
The point is to get albums with tracks from different artists to appear

Then you don't have the album artist set. Perhaps you mean I set what
iTunes/Winamp/whatever calls Album Artist, but is really the id3 tag
called 'TPE2', and I would like SC to be able to treat TPE2 as Album
Artist because I don't want to use another tagger to correct this.

Again, there is a ton of confusion here when people refer to 'Album
Artist': it is -not- (at present anyway) the same as what Winamp or
iTunes uses. Setting it in those programs does not mean SC is using it
as such.

It -does- work if you set the FLAC tag ALBUMARTIST or TXXX
ALBUMARTIST or TXXX MusicBrainz Album Artist...

But we keep going around in circles when you say I am setting album
artist when really you are not (at least according to id3 specs and
SC).

When are we going to see true collaboration and willingness to resolve
 this issue?

Why do you feel conned? If you do not like the SB3 or Duet, send it
back. I believe they both come with a 30-day Satisfaction Guarantee. As
for the ReadyNAS, I had one and it did what it said it would do. Was it
up to the task of my huge CD collection, NO it was not. The ReadyNAS is
also really only meant for a small music collection and not other tasks.
It is NOT a PC, it is an intellegent Network Storage Device. The Thecus
N5200 Pro is in my opinion the minumum equipment as far as an NAS goes
for any small to medium CD collection. And if one has over 5000 CDs, I
strongly suggest that one builds their own NAS based off a minimum of
an Intel P4 machine with 2 GB RAM running some form of Linux (and
before everybody goes crazy, yes you can use older slower PCs, but with
P4 prices where they are why would you). The biggest advantage of
building your own NAS is that you can fix it yourself from regular PC
parts as well as upgrade it anytime.

Finally, if one has a wireless network, why not try keeping the music
files stored on the ReadyNAS and running SqueezeCenter on an old PC.
That way the NAS does not have to deal with SqueezeCenter or all GUI
overhead.

If you look at the picture I posted on page 10 of this thread you will

see that irrespective of whatever or wherever the internal
representation
of the Album Artist is stored SC is reading it and displaying it.

So why can't I navigate by it?

Look it might be Band it might be something else. I might be persuaded
to use some other tool, but Mrs bullgod won't be, neither will 99.9% of
the world.

The tags are good enough this is proved by SC already knows that 20
Golden Greats is by Frank Sinatra
whether this is by band or artist tag doesn't matter, because whichever
it is, SC has read it, and is already using that tag.

To say that I have to know to navigate to Various Artists in order to
play this album, just because Shirley MacLaine sang on one track, is
utter madness.

And that's all that requires going: (optionally) removing the test that
makes this album a compilation, would fix my world.

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-14 Thread grommet

FYI, to possibly add to the confusion. :D

Mp3tag, a leading tagging tool, maps what is calls BAND to MP3 IDv2.3
TPE2. This is fairly normal. It also directly maps it's BAND
variable to WM/AlbumArtist for WMA content, and to the aART atom for
M4A content. (These two are real Album Artist tags.)

So, at least for 3 media formats with non-'free-form tagging (MP3, WMA
M4A)... in Mp3tag, what it calls BAND is really Album Artist based on
the cross-mapping.

Anyway, like it or not, TPE2 is a popular de facto standard for Album
Aritst for MP3. iTunes, WinAmp, Mp3Tag, MediaMonkey, Sonos, Rockbox,
Explorer shell, WMP 10/11, etc. It's a shame ID3v2 was half-baked at
design, but we're stuck with it.

Slim should offer a simple setting to treat TPE2 MP3 as Album Artist as
much as WMA WM/AlbumArtist and M4A aART.

[slim] Adding support for M4A file properties to Windows Explorer

2008-04-14 Thread AndrewFG

Hi,

I use iTunes for ripping my CDs to M4A files, I use Mp3Tag to edit the
tags, and I use SqueezeCenter / Transporter for selecting music and
playing it.

However what I miss is the ability to view M4A tag data and cover art
in Windows Explorer, and to use Windows Search to find tracks and
albums. (Native Windows provides support for MP3 files but not for
M4A). ... So I wrote my own Windows Shell Extension that adds support
for M4A files to Windows Vista Explorer.

http://www.whitebear.ch/music

This shell extension could be a nice extra for SB / Transporter users.

Re: [slim] Building Playlists

2008-04-14 Thread larrettp

There are 2 issues here:

1. I have spent countless hours trying to get this setup to perform as
promised. WAY beyond any 30 day guarantee. This is mostly because any
technical support offered (for any IT product) automatically makes you
assume it is YOUR fault! I have tried every new version of Slimserver,
SqueezeCentre and RAIDiator issued and they have ALL performed like
dogs. My library is well ordered and I spent a long time converting all
tracks to the same format (AAC). I put 1gB of RAM in the ReadyNAS and
that DID lift the performance from appalling to just dreadful. Since
the ReadyNAS, Squeezeboxes and Slimserver were sold as a package, I
would have expected them (naively) to work out of the box. Which part
of this statement is unreasonable?

2. I would expect the vendors (Netgear and Logitech) to work TOGETHER
to solve this problem, not in seeming isolation and denial of
responsibility for a product combination which obviously is not fit for
purpose. If you are selling a 1Tb server with a promise of music
streaming to a specifically named product, it should be capable of
working as well with 1Tb of stored music as with 1Gb. Size should not
be an issue. Is there anything wrong with that assumption?

What you are suggesting is that the adverts recommending this
combination were misleading and, although I can store music on the
ReadyNAS and use the Squeezeboxes to stream it, I need to use an
interim computer to do the work that SlimServer/SqueezeCenter reckons
it should be able to do on the original combination.

spending lots of the ReadyNAS's scarce CPU power in transcoding. I
don't expect to change your mind about what you think you were

much better performance with a codec that the SB handles natively (Ogg,

Re: [slim] Cant play downloads i have bought

2008-04-14 Thread Mitch Harding
One workaround you can use is burn your music to a CD, rip it from the CD,
and then encode it in a format that the SB can handle -- mp3 or FLAC. The
downside of using mp3 in this case is that you're losing data twice --
iTunes throws away some data when they encode it (unless it's Apple
lossless), and then you throw more away when you go to mp3.

I try to avoid iTunes whenever I can. Occasionally they have something
available exclusively that I want. In those cases, I get it, burn it to a
CD, rip it to WAV, and then encode it as FLAC.

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-14 Thread Phil Meyer
Not true. It displays as Album by Artist, what the internal
representation of this is I don't care.

That image is a picture of iTunes - what relevance has that to the content of
your SqueezeCenter library?

Out of curiosity, what version of iTunes do you use? I have v7.6.2.9 which
allows the user to show Artist, Album Artist and/or Sort Album Artist. I
can't see an Album by Artist column like yours. Either way, whenever you see
album artist in iTunes, for mp3 files it's actually the Band tag that it is
stored in, due to it mis-using that tag.

Album Artist is the column title that you can see in the grid, and it groups
songs in the list by that when in album view display mode, but that's about
all that iTunes will do with it. eg. if you set an album artist, it won't
appear in the artist filter. Only the content of artists appears in the list,
and you get all artists even if they only appear on one song in a compilation.

So in iTunes if you have an album with songs by different artists, and set it
as not a compilation album and set an album artist (really this is band),
then that band will not appear in the list of artists.

SqueezeCenter is much more intelligent and conformant to standards. I dare say
that something will be changed to allow it to work in a non-standard way to
make it act like iTunes.

You should not blindly trust ads and reviews.
There are tons of threads in both SlimDevices and Infrant forums where
people complain about SlimServer's / SqueezeCenter's poor performance
with the ReadyNAS and large music collections.
Now, if you're so upset with your ReadyNAS, sell it and buy a Thecus or
whatever, but please stop bugging Slim/Infrant forums with your
complaints.

Are the forums a service provided for customer feedback and to provide
solutions for problems found during use...

or are they a nerdfest for those who just want to tinker with the
hardware and software but aren't interested in a product that is
readily usable by the general public?

Well, depending on which Linksys, you might be able to flash upgraded or
open source firmware, such as DD-WRT.

The longer answer is that your network needs a DHCP server. Most folks
just have their WAP/router do it. I don't, I have a linux server that
does DPCH assigments, among other things. With that, its just a matter
of changing the dhcpd.conf to have your way with it.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-14 Thread denmennis

With regard to the pepole who post on this website, it is clear just by
reading these posts that almost every person here has a fairly good
working knowledge of networks and connected devices. I do not recall
many posts from someone like me who knows next to nothing and bought
the SB with the hope of enjoying the product and not spending night
after night on the computer doing nightly builds and upgrading
firmware. A few who claim to be newbies spout out technical jargon like
its second nature. So now I have to wonder how many people there are out
there like me who may view the posts (# of views now exceed 6000 vs # of
posts about 140) but don't or won't post herefor one reason or another.
Maybe the problem is more widespread than we know ormaybe it isnt.

I was given an RMA over a week ago and then had a couple of good days
with the SB so I let the opportunity to return it pass. Now it is
functionless.

I am at a total loss as to what to do since I simply don't have the
time or energy to go through all of these upgrades. I was expecting a
product to enhance my listening pleasure and to help releive my stress,
not to add to it.

I think I will e-mail Logitech and see if I can send it back so that
THEY can fix it.

Re: [slim] Building Playlists

2008-04-14 Thread bpa

What processor does your ReadyNAS have?

The processor in the ReadyNAS NV is a IT3107 Network Storage
Processor. This is a custom processor tuned for networked storage
operations and does not have floating point which means the processor
is not good at handling some Perl operations and also many decoding
applications.

AFAICT the SC port is the responsibility of ReadyNAS engineering and it
is up to them to assess what is acceptable performance from the ReadyNAS
platform and decide which functionality (e.g. plugins) can be supported.

[slim] Question for NAS owners

2008-04-14 Thread chazk13

I'm considering purchasing a Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo, mostly due to
the fact that i'm just running out of space on my PC.

I'm exploring the posibility of running slimserver on the linkstation
itself. What I'm wondering is this:

Besides saving the processing overhead Slimserver uses on my PC, what
advantage do I gain from running SlimServer from a NAS device?

Thanks for any info you can pass on!

Thanks!

Please keep the context of my reply... the poster made the broad
suggestion that the product was flawed. I basically replied that I
don't believe the product is flawed for every user, but is clearly
having problems with his particular configuration.

Having gone through lots of problems like this--most recently with an
utterly awful experience with a 2wire residential gateway I got as part
of my ATT U-verse service--I know that it can be frustrating. In the
end, though, all networking, and especially wireless networking, is a
complex interaction between several devices. Depsite there being
standards there's always a chance that somewhere in the stack there
is an incompatibilty that causes a problem.

Clearly, based on the feedback we've gotten, we've found some issues
with certain specific routers. This doesn't indicate a fundamentally
flawed design, or rushed development; rather, it indicates a
compatibility problem that needs to be addressed. Often these type of
problems are very setup-specific, making them difficult to duplicate
and as any software engineer can tell you, it is *really* hard to solve
a problem you can replicate.

None of this fixes -your- problem, and for that I am very sorry. I
wish there was a simple solution, or that it has simply worked out of
the box. The reality is that it didn't but the more information you
can share with us, the more likely we are to be able to fix the
problem--not just for you, but for all customers in the future that
have a setup similar to yours.

You should definitely be in touch with our technical support group.
That's the best way for us to be able to gather the data we need.
Please feel free to request another RMA -- we'll be happy to swap out
the products. If possible, I'd like to make sure the product you
return is isolated and checked out specifically for wireless connection
problems; would you please make sure to note that if/when you return the
device?

And it is capable of playing AAC. You have just chosen to torture this
little CPU with the way you choose to use it.

You have been given advice to reduce your problems, eg, use Random Mix
instead of trying to use shuffle play on 7500 tracks, use a separate
program for building your playlists, run SC on a separate PC (doesn't
solve your ReadyNAS problem, but at least you cut the losses from
