Peter, Point being, you should never expect Nokia to fix a bug, if they do, it's your good luck. Somehow everyone takes the opposite view since they're wrapped up in OS SW. Since Nokia doesn't have bug tracking system, don't be upset when they don't fix bugs. You know what you're getting when you buy into the system/product. My 3 year old Samsung TV has upgradeable software, but they've never once provided updated SW for the unit. Are there bugs? Yes. Do I expect them to release new SW? No, but if they do, that's my good fortune. With SS, they do have a bug tracker, so it's that promise (not the contractual type) that bugs will get fixed that can be somewhat misleading and frustrating. I can certainly see how someone could get frustrated waiting and waiting for a submitted bug to get fixed. If you expect to sell a product to the general public then it has to be compatible with at least the major network setups, Linksys and Netgear. In my case Support has basically said that the problem is due to Netgear's Range Extender, which I was forced to use because the Receivers can't connect from more than about 15 feet away, so they aren't going to do anything about it. So I can use my Squeezeboxes within a 15 foot radius of the router, so much for Wifi. Might you have a crappy wifi network? Re: [slim] Spent 3 hours with tech support last night...
I'm no techy, but even I know that you can setup DHCP and still use static IPs where you want. Just setup the DHCP range outside the range of the static IPs. IMO this will make your life much easier. Howard Passman;311122 Wrote: Hi Mike, When forced to, I let the Linksys router hand out DHCP. As I mentioned, I don't really like to use DHCP for ease of use reasons. We have 22 devices on our home network and it's just easier to hand out (static) IP's. At some point I did turn DHCP on because I could not get the choice of putting in an address. When I did, I reserved ip addresses for the three MAC address of the SB devices. Some of the Linksys routers allow you to associate MAC addresses with IP addresses. Thinking back I may have turned it off again after I got off the phone with tech support and that may be why I finally got the option to statically address the receivers. When I bought the DUET I wasn't sure how to get the PIN number. Almost the first thing tech support has you do is use DHCP to address the controller. Then, when I received the second receiver and wanted to use the receivers as access points, I called to try and get help on that. Again, the support guy insisted I turn DHCP on. Now that I know that if no DHCP service is available that it will ask for a staic address, then that should make things easier. Looking back the entire DHCP mess started with the fact that you can't statically address the controller, which is not what the instructions say and the way I wanted to do it. On my first call to support I was told that that was a mistake and that I could not assign an address to the controller. Hence DHCP got involved. I hope this helps. After a few days of library additions, I noticed new albums are not displayed by the remote. Re checked the SqueezeCenter which is set for Look for new changed music. Did a 10 minute manual rescan of the whole library, then I could see everything on the remote controller. I added more albums, same story, SqueezeCenter never auto updates the library! tried mailing support via the Support page from 2 computers/browsers, no go: Server error. SqueezeCenter updates, the remote tells me I am up to date with ver 7.0.1. I feel I have done everything I can,for something that should work out of the box. Any help would be much appreciated. -- phaedra phaedra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48453 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

mattybain;314326 Wrote: Whilst it is true that wi-fi is complex and often the source of problems there definitely seems to be something going on that is not being addressed. Numerous people have posted with problems, often who already have a SB3 which should rule out wirless issues. I have 2 SB3's and 2 Duet's, the SB3's hold great signal and the duets are all too close to the router to not get a good signal. However I have noticed that one of the SBC's is *much* worse than the other one. It doesn't hold a signal very well, often loses connection and more often than that it takes an age to come up with the list of artists. The other one is brilliant and works like a charm, excatly how I wanted the SBC to behave, quick and holds a good connection. The are on the same firmware and obviously the SC is the same version, what exactly is going on here? I have switched the SBC's round so the bad one is very near to the router which has solved my issues for now. From a Wi-Fi and maybe more importantly an RF standpoint, we can't compare the Controller to any other Slim Devices product. It is a handheld mobile device. It has the lowest profile (read not good for antenna position) and many times has the users hand and/or body blocking the path to the access point. Additionally since it has the weakest antenna placement options, it is more susceptible to interference from other household devices as well as from neighboring Wi-Fi networks. All in all, the Duet and its Controller are a fairly good first effort. This is especially true when one looks at the fact that it had to be designed around a standard that already excised and has to work and play with equipment functioning in a specific way and domain. One might ask if the Controller could have been designed differently. The answer is of course yes it could have, but then it would have most likely been a completely new system with no backward compatibility. More importantly it would have most likely needed its own non-WiFi transmitters and receivers. Most multi-unit Squeezebox users have a Home WiFi Network so it makes sense to use that and not reinvent the wheel. This might be to painful for some users, but has anybody with reception problems (and a wireless access point far from where the Controller is used most) thought about running the Duet wired and putting the Controller in Adhoc Mode? -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono Blocks, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Bedroom: SB3, NAD C370, Thiel 2.3 Home Office: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, VSM-1 Sigs Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48985 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I actually see it on other mailing lists I subscribe to. Thanks :) Many mailing list packages use a special return address with '-bounces' as part of the name. They do this so that bounces from full mailboxes etc don't go back to the list itself, but to the list processing software to handle. Like postal mail, SMTP has two 'From' addresses. One is the one you usually see in the 'From:' line, which for a mailing list is usually the person who posted the mail. The other is the SMTP-From, which is 'where to send error notices'. As I said, it is like snail mail: the From: that most mail clients display is equivalent to the return address on the letterhead. It is where you would send replies. The SMTP-From is like the return address on the envelope: where the post office sends undeliverable mail. In short, if your mail headers show something like: Code: From [EMAIL PROTECTED] (some other stuff) From: Fred Foo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Then all is normal. Don't worry about it. Replies to the mail (unless a Reply-To sends it elsewhere), will go to Fred, errors getting it to your mailbox would have gone to something-bounce. It doesnt mean your mail is bouncing, just that the list processor is correctly setting itself to process error messages instead of Fred (who really doesnt want to know if 200 people on a large mailing list have full mailboxes). -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49167 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
What's wrong with putting Various Artists in the Album Artist tag if you are saying that you want this as the Album Artists name. Nothing really wrong with doing that. It's just a name after all. However, I don't consider Various Artists to be an artist name; it's another miss-use of the tag. I'd never need to set the album artist to Various Artists because SqueezeCenter does that automatically when the album is a compilation album. Setting the album artist to Various Artists may also lead to inconsistencies in SqueezeCenter, because it displays compilation albums as belonging to an artist called Various Artists automatically. Most applications have a mechanism for indicating that an album is a compilation album. Even iTunes/iPod have a Compilation tag, and you can browse compilations. This doesn't involve having an album artist. I'm not sure what else you would put there if you sort by that. Don't know what you mean exactly. I wouldn't put anything in an album artist tag if there's not meant to be anything there. If all songs are by the same performing artist, there's no need to have an album artist. For a compilation album, songs will have different performing artists, and an album artist is not necessary, because it's a compilation; the software knows there are various artists, and the album is not owned by a single artist name. As I said before, it would be better if there were a Browse Compilations, rather than Browse Artists Various Artists (or whatever name has been entered in the Music Library setting When compilation albums are grouped together, they appear under Various Artists by default. You can change that name below.). When browsing albums, compilation albums should be displayed by Various Artists (or the configered alternative name). These are stored in the recommended ARTIST\ALBUM or VARIOS ARTIST\GENRE\ALBUM structure. However, since 7.01 it seems this no longer happens: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7869 From reading 'some' of this thread it seems that this is all due to some new tag data being used for album artist?? Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
I used to have my library and Slimserver set up just how I like it - Compilations were correctly listed under Various Artists and contributing artists did not appear in the main list of Artists. This seems to have changed, now that I've moved to SC 7 The problem occurs when an album with a main artist has some tracks where other artists contribute eg Santana's Supernatural with contributing artists Eric Clapton, Eagle Eye Cherry, Lauryn Hill etc. SC appears to treat this as a compilation, and lists the album under Various Artists, though it does show the Artist as Santana (probably because the Album Artist tag is set to Santana) If I explicitly set the Compilation tag to 0, then SC stops treating it as a compilation. However, it insists on including each contributing artist in the artist list despite the setting of the option List albums by band = Yes (and List Albums by All Artists for that Album = No) and also Group compilation albums together = Yes I'm running SC 7.0.1 19705, on Windows Vista Home Premium. All my music is in FLAC ripped using dbPoweramp (various versions over the last few years) I have just re-ripped Supernatural using the latest dBPoweramp (V13 Reference) and this automatically sets Compilation=0 which is helpful. It also sets Album Artist = Santana But SC still lists all of the contributing artists, which is not what I want. So, how can I achieve the result I want (and used to have)? and Is this a bug or is it the intended behaviour (for some weird reason)? (I know I could delete the contributing artist tags but that would be extra work and defeats the great metadata lookup in dBpoweramp) (I did look at the WIKI page on tags, where it states that SC looks at the BAND tag rather than ALBUM ARTIST in Flac files. Could someone in the know confirm whether this is the case. I did try deleting the Album Artist Tag and setting a Band tag but it made no difference to my problem.) Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
why does SC conflate an albums property, with how that album is named (named via album artist?) what i would do, is if something seems like a comp to SC, and there is no album artist or TPE2 tag for it to use, it should then use the ALBUM name, and set the COMP field in the positive. i know you wouldn't like that phil I don't know, it seems like what you are suggesting is exactly how it works now? If an album seems like a compilation (i.e. songs by different artists), and there is no album artist, then it is a compilation. When browsing albums, compilation albums should be displayed by Various Artists (or the configered alternative name). If sort by album artist is selected, it should sort by that name too. i think there is a bug when doing Home-Artists-Various Artists. I don't think so - works fine for me. and what do you mean 'if sort by album artist is selected?' Isn't this how you usually browse your music in the webUI? Browse Albums, with Sort By set to artist, album. That artist is the album artist. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
I have just re-ripped Supernatural using the latest dBPoweramp (V13 Reference) and this automatically sets Compilation=0 which is helpful. It also sets Album Artist = Santana I think you'll find that dbPowerAmp stores Album Artist in a band tag. I have dbPowerAmp (don't use the ripper, only use it for converting FLAC to mp3 for transfer to portable music player). I just tried ripping a couple of tracks in dbPowerAmp, and set the Album Artist to Test. I then loaded the songs into Foobar music player, and looked at the tag properties. It says it has stored the tags in id3v2 format. It reports the following: Artist Name : Pink Floyd Track Title : Careful With That Axe, Eugene Album Title : Ummagumma Date : 1969 Genre : Progressive Rock Composer : Performer : Album Artist : Track Number : 2 Total Tracks : 4 Disc Number : 1 Total Discs : 2 Comment : BAND : Test Note that Album Artist is blank, and a custom tag BAND has been used to store the value Test. FLAC tag format can support proper Album Artist tags, but id3v2 was written by dbPowerAmp. The tags were not readable in my usual tagging app Mp3Tag. It said the tag format was id3v2, but couldn't read the tags. Maybe the tag format and mapping of fields to tags is configurable in dbPowerAmp - I don't know, this was using the default settings, as I've never used it before and haven't changed any configuration options. I tried ripping to mp3 format too, and it stored id3v2 format tags. The Album Artist was stored in TPE2 (BAND). You could confirm that SqueezeCenter is reading your tag as Band instead of Album Artist by browsing to a song in the webUI. It should list the tag information it has read. It will be saying Band: xxx instead of Album Artist: xxx. But SC still lists all of the contributing artists, which is not what I want. You need to set an Album Artist tag that SqueezeCenter understands, or if you have SqueezeCenter v7.1 there is now a new option to treat TPE2 as Album Artist, instead of Band. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!
Integrating SC and MusicIP is way, WAY too complicated at present. It's ridiculous in its complexity and its inelegance. I'm an expert user, have done programming, etc., and after a couple hours of messing around with this, still haven't been able to get it to work. Never mind why, I'm sure if I kept at it after another couple hours it might work (then stop working, then miraculously start working, etc.). Please understand that I appreciate the effort here, but honest feedback needs to be given. Here is what needs to be changed for this to be anything but one giant unprofessional, embarrassing kludge: - However musicip is to be installed, whether it be a gui program, headless, a service with no running program, etc., it should be completely installed and configured for SC after running a simple installation program. - It should make no difference in what order SC and musicip load. None. To have to figure out which one must load first is a headache users should not have to deal with. This can be fixed in SC, or better in the musicip SC plugin. These are only two changes. None of the above is anything unusual. The most niche programs from the smallest software companies do it like this. Sorry for the rant, but this is a big waste of peoples' time at the moment and only the most sophisticated and determined users will use it. It would be so much more productive to do the work on the developers' end. The result would be a tenfold increase in users - and hopefully in business to the musicip folks. -- JohnnyLightOn JohnnyLightOn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=28 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48270 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thank you. That was a very helpful info. I guess I will read up more on the SB3. -- dvdit dvdit's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18317 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49085 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I think you've hit the nail on the head. As another user put it, I'm a geek, but of the I don't have the time to deal with that shit (pardon my French) variety. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more infuriating that settling down to listen to something you've been looking forward to only to find you have to deal with that shit. -- egd Internet forums: conclusive proof depth of gene pool is indeed variable, monkeys can be taught to cut code, and world peace is utterly unrealistic... Re: [slim] Controller Wireless Reception
It seems to me that the SBC definitely has a problem. My beta test hardware works fine but the final product won't stay connected beyond about 15 feet from the router, and this is supposed to be an improvement in range over the beta test hardware. Both units are running the same software version. There is a real hardware problem here that needs to be fixed. Re: [slim] Duet review on Notebookreview
Thank you for quoting me, but from what I've read, it would seem that your Controller is defective. My Squeezebox never gave me shit. When I encountered major problems, it was 99 times out of 100 the wireless network's fault. And since I upgraded from ADSL to cable, all my wireless problems disappeared. What an amazing little device! I wonder, did you get your Controller to work? If not, have you contacted support? Re: [slim] Controller Wireless Reception
My 2c suggestion is to consider adding an airport express (as a WDS) in the same room as your controller to extend the range of your main wireless network. -- shake-the-disease shake-the-disease's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=698 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48985 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
