[slim] SBC Show Year with Albums
In SqueezeCenter settings, I have the option for "Show Year with Albums" enabled. This works great on the web interface, as the year is now displayed next to the album title. Is there a way to create this same effect on the Duet Controller? It would be nice when browsing by albums to have the album year appear next to the album title. Thanks for the help. I've got the same setup running on my NAS and my album art (folder.jpg in all cases) shows up in SC, whether via web or Controller interface. Just guessing here, but was your album art added prior to or after building the MiP cache? You could also point SC to the library and rescan, just make sure the path from SC's perspective is identical to that in MiP's cache (otherwise your library will double up). The downside is rescans will take 2x as long to run. -- egd Internet forums: conclusive proof depth of gene pool is indeed variable, monkeys can be taught to cut code, and world peace is utterly unrealistic... Re: [slim] New user's experience on SC: Slow, unintuitive, generally not fun
Hi, And thank you everyone. As it says in the first post, my goal was to gather information on how to make SC snappier. Many suggestions on how to make things snappier have been raised: - Install Moose (it's a great idea to develop it into touch controlled UI!) - Use a certain OS - Use remote control (however this way playlist managing and music mixing is too tough a task) - Clean up OS from unnecessary services and applications - Not yet verified, but I strongly believe that on a fast SSD things will speed up. Maybe one day I'll buy one. - Switch to other solutions (foobar, winamp, itunes), of which foobar seems the best for it's openness and potential for customization. Pale Blue Ego, it's not logical to separate 149USD SBR and 10+kUSD Sooloos just like that. Because, what can you do with a SBR? Nothing. You have to attach a computer, display device and a storage device. Those cost a lot of dough, especially if you enclose them in those fancy cases like Sooloos'. Only then you have the form and functionality somewhat comparable to the Sooloos. One shouldn't get overwhelmed by a price tag, that should be common sense in the modern era of branding and marketing. I also think people (including the OP) have been too quick to rule out some kind of individual specific software interference as well, such as anti-virus, that is causing the OP to have more delay than the rest of us. That said, if I wanted to make a playlist on the fly choosing individual songs, I'm not sure I would choose SC to do it with. I would use the SB or controller directly, but that's not an option here since the OP doesn't have a controller. An alternative suggestion would be to use something else for that purpose. Re: [slim] Soon to be Squeezeboxer has a question.
If you use softsqueeze, you won't see the delay you see with using foobar2k to stream. For it to work, you have to have Java installed. Remote streaming works great - I'm listening to music that way right now. Mnyb hit all of the points regarding remote streaming. Specifically with your Westell Internet gateway (aka router) you have from Verizon, you will also have to adjust your firewall level in addition to port forwarding. I have experience dealing with this with my father-in-law's setup. Be default, it has the firewall set to "high", which prevents outbound traffic on non-standard ports. Port 9000 for SC falls into this category. So, in addition to port-forwarding, you will have to adjust your router's firewall by either lowering the level or creating an exception for the ports SC uses. As I recall, the Westell does not support DynDNS and you can't install 3rd party software on it. This means that you will have to note your IP address each day before you go to work and hope it doesn't change during the day. You may want to investigate putting the router into bridge mode and getting a Linksys or another brand router. My setup with verizon is that I have a modem from them which I have in bridge mode and connected to a Linksys WRT-54GS. I'm not sure how easy it is to bridge the Westell all-in-one device, but you can find info about it on the Internet. Enjoy your new SB3 when you get it!!! -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 1 duet. I've actually rarely tried :) But there would be situations I'd expect to see problems, for example changes to sync logic, or changes to supported formats. Imagine if SC thinks an SB3 can play a specific format native (because that was just added to the fw) but in fact it can't (because it's been held back). You certainly can edit the config to hold back the version as you mention, and it'll work fine for most cases. I think it's a fair compromise to require the minority of people who want to run mismatched versions to do a little extra work so that the majority of us who don't can get automatic up/downgrades and a nice smooth experience. The really unfortunate issue (which is a relatively new problem) arises with SN having it's own version requirements. I would think some work could go into making SN more tolerant of fw versions a few iterations each side of "ideal". -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51310 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I guess it depends on what you mean by "very loud" and "medium to large"! I run a gen 2 T-amp into a pair of regular bookshelf speakers. The room is a fairly standard sized bedroom, something like 12'x14' and I've never tried turning it to max, it'd be too loud. I wouldn't expect the same setup to work well in my living room which is three times the size (and with high ceilings). -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51372 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] New user's experience on SC: Slow, unintuitive, generally not fun
The OP is unusual in that the WebUI is the ONLY way he can control the player (SBR). He's using the absolute cheapest Squeezebox solution possible, the $149 Receiver without a Controller. Yeah, it might be a leeetle bit unfair to expect it to perform as snappily as the $10k+ Sooloos system. But still, there are things he can try. Moose and SlimRemote are Windows programs that may perform better than the WebUI. Firefox or Opera might be quicker than IE at rendering the web pages. A different OS on the server, more RAM, etc. might help the performance. The performance is much quicker using the Controller or the SB3 + IR remote. The WebUI can be slow, depending on a lot of different factors, but since it isn't the standard way most people control the player, the issue is much less relevant for them. I'm all for free programs and have a lot of respect for people who make them. I make scripts and small programs for a totally different area and they're free. But it is perfectly reasonable to ask money for so excellent a program as dbPoweramp. When I started ripping I tried EAC. Although the results were good, I found the program a real PITA to use. I the tried dbPoweramp: it just did what it was supposed to do. Much faster and more intuitive than EAC and with more functionality. So I never looked back, even when the price increased slightly with the release of version 13. Re: [slim] New user's experience on SC: Slow, unintuitive, generally not fun
Many responses here have followed this structure: "If one wants Sooloos-like operability one goes and buys it. Can't afford? Boohoo, don't complain." I can understand this argument only to some degree. Mostly I don't. Why should we see things so categorically? As if there were no options or alternatives. "Slim Devices know what they're doing, they have provided a finalized product here to our hands and they don't have to follow the competition". What good could follow from that kind of encouragement? The (technical) competition being in a tenfold price category will not restrain from reaching or getting close to it, only one's lack of ambition or dare will. We don't know where the Sooloos' high premium goes to. How much goes to marketing, design or taking back initial funding? Only a small fraction might go to technical R&D. And since SD operates in an open ideology, a whole lot of priceless equity is tied to SD development. Overall I see it as lack of imagination and courage to disregard a product simply for its price tag. And if one is satisfied and happy with one's current SD setup, why not be just that, happy and satisfied, instead of implying there isn't space or right to investigate for something more? -- Jooseppi Jooseppi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18815 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51305 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

In principle it can. If you're using ReplayGain, and if the calculated perceived loudness of track 2 (according to its average loudness) was less than the reference level, then you'd get a positive ReplayGain setting, which would indeed cause a volume boost. Let's take this step by step: 1. ReplayGain analyses the tracks and determines what their perceived loudness will be. 2. It has a "reference" loudness. In principle you can set the reference level to whatever you like. There is a default level[1] that was chosen because it's a reasonable compromise. 3. If the analysed track is louder than the reference level, a negative ReplayGain tag is added. If the track is quieter than the reference level, a positive[2] ReplayGain tag is added. [1] The default is a specific level relative to pink noise at -20dBFS, and is somewhat confusingly referred to as "89dB". (I believe this is because in professional cinema installations this particular level will play at 89dB SPL - at what distance from the speakers I know not). [2] Note that there is currently an outstanding bug concerning the Squeezebox's handling of positive ReplayGain settings. See here for the gory details: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5119 liffy99;331420 Wrote: > Talking of normalising - is this a good thing to do when ripping ? No. Normalisation applies a linear amplitude change, as does ReplayGain. If you use the latter, there's no point in doing the former, and if you *do* apply normalisation when ripping then you're permanently changing the audio data in an irreversible way. ReplayGain operates on playback so it's far more benign. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51320 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Update: It isn't as simple as that. An extra squeezebox does not always cause excess CPU usage: I just had two sychronised playing the same AlienBBC stream, with reasonable performance, and after unsychronising and putting one on standby the other is still playing fine. I'll do some more investigation to try and work out more specifically what circumstances lead to the problem. [slim] extra squeezeboxes use loads of server CPU even when on standby!?
Hi all, I'm running Squeezecenter 7.0 on a QNAP TS-109, till recently with just the one Squeezebox. AlienBBC runs OK like this although it is pushing the QNAP's CPU close to the limit, because of the resource-hungry mplayer which AlienBBC uses. I've just got a second squeezebox for another room, and I am rather frustrated to find out that having the extra squeezebox attached seems to cause Squeezecenter itself to use a lot more CPU, even when that Squeezebox is on standby. It's difficult to be precise because the CPU usage oscillates a lot, but (from looking at top, the linux cpu monitor) I would estimate that with just one squeezebox on the network, mplayer uses about 80% CPU, perl (in otherwords slimserver) about 10%, and AlienBBC runs fine. Having an extra squeezebox on, even in standby, causes perl to run at around 40%, pushing mplayer down to 50%, and causing a lot of stutter. Surely a standby squeezebox shouldn't be straining the server like this? The workaround is obviously to unplug the unused squeezeboxes but that interferes with the whole music on demand experience which is otherwise working so nicely. Much appreciation for any ideas about what I can do! Thanks, this explains a lot, although i still not quite understand it. I now understand why Browse Music Folder is slow on the controller, but it is also slow when i browse the other items like Albums. If I select my entire collection to play at random it makes a playlist of some 17,000 songs - takes _a_few_minutes_ to generate, but once done it works fine, so it should be fine for 1,000. -- Khuli http://www.last.fm/user/khuli Khuli's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=851 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51363 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Squeezebox controller and wifi roaming
Hi, I've recently installed a Duet at a friend's house and, in the main, all is well and he's very pleased except for one small problem. He lives in an old house with thick walls and his wifi reception isn't great so he has more than one wireless access point. They are both setup with the same ssid and WPA key but different channels (fairly wide apart). The problem comes when the Controller is connected to one access point and he moves to another part of the house where the signal strengths change and the Controller switches to the second access point (it shows the strength meter moving from low to high). When this happens, he gets a 'Connecting please wait' message on the Controller screen that never goes away. If he switches it off and on again it connects happily and works fine. So, the question is; should this work? I guess that the problem is the Controller has established a connection to the server which all goes wrong when it disconnects and reconnects to the network. I've not tried using a different SSID etc on the access points - does anyone have this sort of configuration? Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Install details - Linux server (Ubuntu, 2.6.24-19 kernel), Squeezecenter 7.1 - 22170, Receiver - Firmware 36 (using wired ethernet and not acting as an access point). Can't get access to the Controller version remotely but it updated itself after install so I guess it's the latest. -- bigbill bigbill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19505 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51364 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Protection agains selecting over x songs
When a user selects more than 1000 songs or so, usually by mistake, the server will be unresponsive due to 100% cpu for hours even though you have a very fast computer. The funny thing is that if I restart the server the playlist still has to be populated with the thusands of songs which makes it unresponive right from the start. Plese correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what happens for me here right now :-) I'd like a setting where you can set a max amount of songs to add to the playlist or another good idea that prevent the server to be unresponsive. I'm not sure how the threading exactly works in squeeze center but I hope that things like adding 1 songs to a playlist is on a very low prioritized thread and that features that require fast response times lies in a thread with higher priority. Well, I just wanted to start a discussion regarding this pretty important matter. -- joggs joggs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18947 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51363 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Understanding Replay Gain
Think I follow that CliveB, but take the following; 1 track is recorded with peaks at full volume. 0db (there may be clipping that was introduced in the mastering process which we are powerless to correct). 2nd track peaks at -4db. So whu can't track 2 be amplified (normalised ?) to reach 0db peaks ? Talking of normalising - is this a good thing to do when ripping ? I suspect that you may be confused over what factors are involved in the perceived loudness of a track. It is important to appreciate that the loudness of a track is not due to its peak level, but to its average level. Suppose you have a track that sounds quiet (because it has a low average level) but which peaks at the maximum possible. You can't increase its playback level without either: (a) clipping off the peaks; or (b) compressing its dynamic range. Both operations will introduce distortion. Therefore it is necessary instead to reduce the loud tracks. This is a simple linear volume adjustment, and causes no distortion. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51320 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
