Re: [slim] Dont Buy!!!!! (merged to remove cross-posting)

2008-09-13 Thread G-dude

You know what...this is an awesome product...I too had problems when my
iMac was hooked up wirelessly...but they say they recommend wiring your
Squeezecenter and soonce i did it...everything worked real well.

I also opened the ports they suggested (don't know why since not
necessarily communicating outside to play my music) but the
combination of the two things (wired PC and open ports) and this baby
sings.

I now have a second classic version I bought used and have it hooked
up wirelessly and it works super perfect...2 minute install just
plugged it inkids and wife can even use itawesome.

Just wire PC and it will be all good...

Re: [slim] Angry about Tranporter + SqueezeCenter

2008-09-13 Thread ModelCitizen

iPhone;339870 Wrote:
This happens all the time with all kinds of electronic equipment.
No it doesn't, not with my stuff anyway. I can't remember ever having
to perform a factory reset on any other piece if equipment I own. The
Transporter is an expensive piece of audiophile kit, perhaps attracting
a less technically savvy group of people than the original SD products
(OP excepting). The bug was very well known by SD, and Sean in
particular (there was a huge thread in the audiophile forum about it
that was contributed to over a long period of time). The factory reset
cure was not documented (wiki, manual or otherwise), yet SD saw fit to
release a Transporter firmware upgrade with a full software release in
the full knowledge that it would cause a reasonable number of
Transporters to stop making any sound!

The omission of some sort of warning in the set up wizard, on the
download page or even in the change notes was an oversight. There is no
doubt about at all.

Probably should let this lie as it's a very minor, niggling and
pedantic point within this thread and increases noise to signal ratio
but
try finding the page. I've just searched for Factory Reset and Factory
Reset Transporter and although it's possible to find mentions of
factory reset (there is no page titled Factory Reset) it takes an awful
lot of trawling before you find the page that actually tells you how to
so it.

Anyway, how long is it supposed to take a person who listens to music
on a device to work out that it needs a factory reset so he can sit
down and listen to music again?

2008-09-13 Thread mudlark

I wish people would try to understand that much technology is at the
forefront of the possible due to pressure from the very people who
complain if things go wrong.

Just as an example I recently spent three hours trying to find out how
to reset and setup a modem/router. The security set up of the WAP
facility wasn't obvious or explained in the manual. This task while
very easy for someone familiar with the router involved wasn't in any
way possible for the typical consumer. This is a simple modem
router

I also had a real problem with a similar pice of equipment because I
didn't have the login password details of the web based gui. The punter
thought i was some kind of wizard. I had tried several long calls to the
help desk of the company concerned with little useful information picked
up.

my squeezebox experience has been completely different. As a fiddler i
have broken my system many times, but ALWAYS someone has come to my aid
even when my performance has been less than helpful.

To all those complainers I would say one thing. Calm down, explain your
problem in a concise and clear fashion and enjoy the bloody thing.

[slim] Another WOL quesion....

2008-09-13 Thread autopilot

Seem to have just about got Wake On LAN working great now :) Just one
minor thing left - after Squeezecenter wakes up and my SB3 re-connects,
the SB3 is defaulted to being 'off' and the Date/time is shown. I would
much prefer the SB3 on be 'on' after a WOL event. It seems more logical
to me (i pressed on because i want in on), but also as I often initially
use my Logitech Harmony One IR remote i have to press power again. It
confuses my GF and the Harmony remote.

Anyway to set it up this way? Or should i file an enhancement request?

My beta controller has this problem too. No big deal (it was free as was
the regular one) but it is useful to have a spare with four
music-enabled rooms and the tree-hugger in me hates to not be able to
fix an otherwise fine piece of equipment.

I understand that the fix requires an RS232 connection to the Molex
type connector on the bottom (for which I have no cable). Is it
possible to open up the Controller and temporarily tack a connection
directly to the board (at the owner's risk, obviously)?

[slim] Squeezecenter 7.2 vs 7.0.1

2008-09-13 Thread ajayrav

Hello,

So I can use my DAC that uses signal sensing to switch inputs, I have
decided to use v7.0.1 instead of 7.2 on my new Duet. With SC 7.2 (and
7.1 apparently), the digital outputs remain on when the receiver is
turned off precluding input switching by my DAC.

My question is, what functionality or quality would I be losing by
using the older version of SC.

Thanks in advance,
Ajay

2008-09-13 Thread astonm

Tmarti,

Glad to see that you've brought the PSP skin back to life. I always
found the standard handheld skin to be cumbersome to use on the PSP. I
have one comment and a feature request/question:

Noticed the pages do not align with the top of the PSP screen. It does,
however, align (more like a slight scroll up) when clicking on the
change settings at the bottom of the screen. Navigating back to the
back-arrow and home buttons results in the screen scolling down again
and creating the 10-pixel margin as noted earlier in the this thread.

We use the Multi-Library and Custom Browse plugins enabling each family
member to browse just their own music library. Is it possible to change
the default configuration for the music library icon to reference all
or a specific libraries configured via the Multi-library plugin. Or,
maybe add a button that presents the current list of libraries?

Keep up the excellent work!

2008-09-13 Thread kgturner

i have an original SB3 and was previously using slimserver 6.5.4. i
upgraded to squeezecenter 7.2. all my music is in .wav format on an
external hard drive. i used a program called tagrename to enter
metadata for the .wav files (5099 of them). after installing 7.2, the
SB3/squeezecenter combo won't recognize any of the info. i'm left with
one artist (No Artist) and one album (No Album) that encompasses my
entire collection. that is absolutely ridiculous. i tried squeezecenter
7.1 but it was slow and buggy so i reverted back to 6.5.4. it appears i
will have to do the same again.

i had intended to purchase a transporter within the next year. somebody
please tell me i can use the transporter with slimserver 6.5.4 as it
appears to be the only stable software that's been released.

Re: [slim] SC 7.3 (Nightly) play wave files, without sound.

2008-09-13 Thread Henk51

A short reply to myself.
Because i've tried SC 7.3-23161.tgz and it is more worser.
Because wave-files are now just 'scrolling' file1,file2,file3and so
on,
in a endless loop, first file --- last file, and starting over.
So I went back to SC 7.2

Another one confirm this problem also.

I don't understand why the music bits sellers don't get this. They have
to be cheaper than Amazon or massively easier. I just put albums on my
wishlist until I get enough for free shipping, and then order them.

There is actually a cost of making a CD physically, it varies with
volume, but you can use one dollar as a good estimate.

Without the CD, I expect it to be roughly a buck cheaper without even

Sorry, you are dreaming.
A decent sized disk is $100, cost. That means $300 retail price.
While the Receiver is a computer, its lacking a few things, and adding
them will not be free. Things like:

- a large case
- a larger power supply
- disk drive controllers

What you are suggesting can easily cost $500, and that just happens to
be the price of a low end PC.

The solution is not for Slim/Logi to sell PCs, since they have to
support and mark up anything, its for you to buy a PC that you like

Re: [slim] Networking challenge

2008-09-13 Thread MeSue

Hi folks. I thought I would report back our results after trying the
Netgear powerline equipment we already had. It works, but it wasn't
without some struggles.

The kit I had came with 1 ethernet bridge (wired to router) and 1
wireless range extender. At some point I had bought another Ethernet
bridge.

Originally we planned to use the wireless range extender out in the
shed so he could use his laptop out there, but upon plugging it in we
discovered it was completely dead (power light didn't come on).

So plan b was to use the other Ethernet bridge on the shed side. That
worked in our initial test just plugging the house one into the most
convenient place for a test. But that was with an Ethernet cable
running across the room, so we had to rearrange the way some things
were plugged in for permanent placement.

Then, when we had it plugged in where we thought would be best, he kept
getting rebuffering on the Squeezebox. ARG. Next hubby went to every
receptacle on that circuit, testing and replacing them. No good...
still rebuffering. So then we rearranged some more plugs in the room so
we could try it on yet another outlet. And that one works!

But we had to unhook the network printer for the test since all the
ports on my router are filled. So for that, we dug out an old Netgear
hub that we still had hanging around and put the printer and powerline
bridge on that. Everything still works with the hub... whew!

So now he is happily listening to my old Squeezebox 2 in his shop with
his old gigantic speakers that I made him remove from the living room
entertainment center and the old receiver that he bought in 1987 and
would not let me get rid of. :-) And we did not have to buy anything.

Yes, but if a WOL packet was sent then everyone could be happy, because
if your server is set to suspend after 15 minutes of inactivity then you
will find that you just get the idle screen saver for 15 minutes and
then the server will sleep, so no blinking messages. If the server is
not reachable or doesn't respond to the WOL packet, then you will see
the annoying message, but quite rightly so... something is wrong.

I can see why the folks at Slim Devices wanted to get rid of the blank
screen due to the difficulty of diagnosing issues for customers, but
they forgot (or ignored) that this may be a regular use case.

know that these things are computers and highly complex, but ideally
much of that complexity would be hidden from the user and things such
as upgrades would go smoothly, without ever causing panic among
customers that they may have 'bricked' their expensive transporter h/w.
I know that there are many things that make this close to impossible
to fully achieve. But once a company has decided it is not their
ambition to strive for that goal, you can be very sure the ideal won't
be even approximately achieved, and that if the market offers an
alternative that seems to offer appliance-like simplicity and
reliability -- good old free market economics will punish the
non-achiever.

Don't get me wrong, I am fan of Slim Devices and what they do and I do
still recommend them to friends. But if the *perception* is that the
experience of these wonderful products is likely to spoiled by the
quality of the software, their success will be limited. So, if a
professor of computer science at Cal feels that the experience he had
is not recommendable to others, don't just condescendingly dismiss it.
Suffice to say, if I were in a QA or marketing role at SD, I would make
sure his voice was heard!

Re: [slim] Controller wireless problem (multiple access-points)

2008-09-13 Thread v084208

Hi again.

As you can see I have changed the title of the message. This is
actually worse than I expected. I can sit 2 feet from one access-point
and the controller seems to want to connect to an access-point in the
other end of the house. It, of course, fails all the time wanting me to
try again. There seems to be no check of the strength of the access
points it connects to. So the question is:

1) Is there any check of the strength?
2) Can I check on what channel the controller connects on?
3) If I turn off two of the access points and make the initial
connection to the most central one, can I always expect it to connect
to that specific access point in the future? Even though I have turned
the other ones on again?
4) In Sweden we have one weeks open purchase. That is if the
merchandise did not work as expected you can return it. Unfortunately I
did not install it in the first week after purchase :-(. I actually did
not expect these problems so I wonder if there is any global return
policies? As it is right now I cannot use it at all.

Best regards
Hakan

[slim] Squeezecenter interface painfully slow... alternatives?

2008-09-13 Thread sfgorman

I've been a squeezebox owner for over 3 years, and have become
increasingly frustrated with the software. The squeezecenter
software is just embarrassingly slow, especially compared to the old
slimserver software. I'm looking for suggestions (settings, plugins,
anything?) that might improve my experience!

I have over 500 CDs in my collection (all ripped to flac) and almost
10,000 songs. When I'm in the mood to listen to some tunes, here's
what I do: open squeezecenter and browse by artist, drilling down
sometimes by album and sometimes by track to build a playlist (by
clicking on the 'add to playlist' button for an artist, an album, or a
track) for shuffle play. I usually build a list of several hundred to
1000 songs that fit my mood.

Problem is, the interface is so slow that once I have a decent number
(100+)of songs in the playlist, and I add something else to the
playlist, the whole interface freezes up for 10+ seconds to add the
songs to the playlist before I can resume browsing my collection. It's
pure frustration; it can take me 20+ minutes to build a decent playlist,
the vast majority of time just waiting for the damn web interface to
respond.

In fact, just moving the cursor from entry to entry in the browse
window of the interface, it takes more than 1 second for the entry to
be highlighted with the '+' (add to playlist) button. This interface
is an embarrassment, and the programmers should be fired. I cannot
understand how anything can be this painfully slow running on multi-GHz
modern CPU.

What alternatives do I have to browse my collection, build a playlist,
and control my squeezebox all in one interface? Has anyone built a
3rd-party interface with improved performance? Thanks!

-Steve

compromise. The problm eis how to get to your music aefter you have

This may be correct if you're using other applications to tag your

simply adds an additional two tags and leaves the remaining tags
untouched. I have the same multiple genres you describe and archiving
analysis and running apply_replaygain.pl are the last steps in my

If you're on Windows, try Moose as a frontend to SC. And for faster
response, use the remote or the SB Controller instead of the web ui.
The remote is not great for building playlists, but it is much more the
natural interface for SB than the web ui.

Is it slow no matter what skin you use? What about a different

FYI-- you can use any software to build playlists and it will be a
better experience than trying to build a playlist of that size from

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter interface painfully slow... alternatives?

2008-09-13 Thread Goodsounds

Steve,

You're making some pretty large playlists - really from hundreds up to
one thousand tracks? Sometimes by choosing tracks or albums
individually? This must take a long time. And is a playlist of hundreds
of tracks (literally, several days long) really useful to you?

Maybe you should try one of the software approaches to playlists. I've
come to enjoy Music IP Mixer. You'll find instructions on how to
integrate it with Squeezecenter hereabouts. I didn't bother with that,
it seemed like more work for not much gain. I just use from my PC and
have it write playlists into a common playlist folder that SC also
uses. Works fine for me, and I find it produces interesting playlists.
It also helps me not overlook songs in my collection that I like but
might forget about from time to time.

Hi and thanks for the advice.

I tried all your suggestions but it still is dropping out. Running at
11b it did seem to not drop out as often but it was still a regular
occurrence.

I am tempted to turn off the WPA security and see if that may be the
problem though don't like the idea of leaving the network open.

Regards,
cliffo

At least return it or recycle it, instead of adding more to landfills.
