On squeenetwork - try adding #slim:noscan=1 at then end of the URL. I
think this will prevent SN scanning the URL before telling SB to play.

[slim] Can't play radio, writing a plugin will solve problem?

2008-11-20 Thread Kramer

Hi,

My provider, Internode provide hosted radio stations.
http://www.internode.on.net/residential/entertainment/broadband_radio/
Access to these radio channels is only available when you are on the
provider's network.

I can play these radio stations just fine using this workflow:
- Start SqueezeCenter on PC
- Add stations to favorites
- Select them and play either on SqueezeBox or SqueezeCenter

The problem is - it's *impossible to play them with SquezeNetwork*
(without PC with SquezeCenter.)

There has been one message about that on this forum
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37596 And it's not
resolved.
You CANNOT play these stations through SqueezeNetwork because
SqueezeNetwork is either proxying or trying to verify streams. Sonce
for non-Internode network access is denied, SqueezeNetwork reports to
SqueezeBox that stream cannot be played.
So *Stream is perfectly valid, but SqueezeNetwork intervenes and deny
me the right to play it?*

My question is
- If someone will write plugin that will open Internode streams
directly, will I be able to use that without PC turned on?
- Is there another workaround?
- Is there "Generic" plugin or plugin template that will open radio
stations so I can modify the plugin to open Internode stations?

thanks.

You can access your SC from any computer in your network. Just open

You can switch between them using the "Music Source" menu.

Ask for a refund if it's not working or try a clean install. It seems
to be working for other people. Try the clean install then if it

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-20 Thread amcluesent

Feedback on 1.1

Sorted the database load of larger libraries

No so good :

- Bug in handling albums of same name ("Best of", "Greatest Hits" etc).
Rather than play the selected album, creates a playlist by taking one
track from all albums which have the same name
- Albums, simply too slow (> 1 minute!) to create viewable menu. This
is with about 3200 albums
- Artists, name truncation with '...', should use smaller font for
these entries
- Artists, albums without dates are listed alphabetically, followed by
dated albums in ascending date order!
- Genres menus doesn't need A-Z structure on menu
- Genres, for same reason one genre 'Classical' always returns zero
entries. The other 27 Genres I have work fine. Go figure.
- Genres, should have an option to order by album name rather than
current order by artist name but display album title
- Genres, building list slow for large number of albums in common genre
(i.e. "Rock")
- Now playing, hardware buttons should be active to control volume

Bottom line, 1.1 may be OK for peeps with up to a few hundred rock/pop
albums.

[slim] Multiple SC installations

2008-11-20 Thread RonM

I'm going to buy a Fit PC (the new Slim version). I will be using it as
a 24/7 music server, with SC installed, supporting by SB Duet. Mostly
this will work fine.

However, sometimes I like to initiate streaming audio not from a
standard internet radio source. I will need to initiate the stream
from my computer. It will not be convenient to do so from the Fit,
hidden away in a dark basement corner.

What are the consequences of running two instances of SC
simultaneously, one on the Fit, one on my regular PC, both networked
via ethernet with the SB?

Re: [slim] Missing Album Art Root Causes

2008-11-20 Thread RonM

There was a time when I subscribed to the prevailing "Microsoft is the
evil empire" dogma. With the whole iTunes/iPod suite, and the related
DRM debacle, I've seen the light, or rather the dark. It's Apple that
is the evil empire.

I won't buy an iPod. I won't buy music from Apple, except in the
iTunes Plus format (no DRM, better rip quality). I'll get my digital
files from other (legal) sources whenever possible, CD if necessary.

Voila, no icky Apple problems with art or otherwise.

[slim] DIR-655 or Airport Extreme for Duet Controller?

2008-11-20 Thread coma

I'm running SqueezeCenter on a Mac Mini (as well as on a new MacBook
Pro) and I've noticed that my Duet Controller seems to lose connection
to my network. My current router is a tiny Linksys Compact WRT54GC and
although this isn't the case, I feel that if I opened it up I'd find a
bent paperclip inside for the antenna.

My question for the users out there is this:

Do those of you using either the D-Link DIR-655 or the Airport Extreme
have problems with your connection to the Duet Controller? And for
those of you that have a Duet and one of those two routers and no
problems please chime in as well.

There are a number of programs that will transfer music
(+photos, video) to iPODS. In many ways, they are superior to
iTunes for most Linux users, as you can imagine.

But only Windows and the Mac will recognize the iTouch or iPhone
when plugged into your USB. Thus, the only way to access the
iTouch or iPhone from Linux is via a wireless FS mount (cool,
but gross). And you have to hack your unit to do so.

Again, iPod != iTouch/iPhone. Some significant differences.

Yeah, sadly. At least, on the Linux side, it's the only way to
interact with an iTouch or iPhone without hacking your unit and
using sshfs/wireless to mount your unit, which makes for a *VERY*
slow (and inconsistent) transfer process. I can't tell you how
many times I have gotten part way through an upload and had it
die...

Note that this isn't advocacy for iTunes. I much prefer, say,
gtkpod for the way I use my iStuff.

My name is my name - didn't think I'd have anything to hide. By now, if
ID theft becomes a problem, it would probably be easier to change my
name by deed poll :-)

My avatar: I should start by pointing out that I'm not a Prince fan at
all. I think I have a copy of Purple Rain somewhere in the archive, but
that's it. I don't even have 3121, and have never heard it. But since
my teens (way back long back) I've been using "1312" as my logo - the
13 looks a bit like a B, the 12 a bit like an R; so when I saw the
Prince album image at about the same time as I was wondering what to
use for an avatar, it just seemed obvious.

[slim] SB3 VFD Luminosity (beloved one can not sleep)

2008-11-20 Thread vrobin

Since I plugged my old SB3 to the little amp and speakers I bought for
the bedroom, I'm discovering happiness of multi-room and synchronized
playback... this is purely marvelous for the music lover I am.

But (in every good story, there is a "but"²) my girlfriend complains
about the SB3 VFD luminosity, even in minimal luminosity she's waked up
by the light.

Is it possible to set minimal luminosity to be darker? (id would be
nice if configuration from 0 to 4 was mapped to a 0-100 value and thus
1 could be mapped to 5% or 10% instead of 25%)

If this isn't possible, could it be possible to change the font for a
thinner one and to display only the clock and not the date in minimal
font size? (maybe with datetime plugin?)

Thanks for the answers you could give.

Indeed - I do have soundtracks and compilations with U2 tracks on them
(When you have that much music, you have compilations with almost all
artists represented).

If indeed having ARTISTSORT defined for a compilation album causes the
problem you describe - that could go a long way to explaining my
issues.

Seems like a bug - I'd think the idea of ARTISTSORT for an album would
be to define what artist name to sort that album under.

I'll try deleting the ARTISTSORT tags from some of my compilations as a
test to see if it helps.

Re: [slim] Album Sorting - Confusion, Flaws, and an unclear path forward

2008-11-20 Thread CatBus

I'd file a bug then. This should work, and I'd go so far as to say this
DOES work for almost everyone, so the good news is that it's probably
something very very simple that's not going to come out until someone
asks the right question. You're likely going to need to provide some
scanner logs to the SlimDevices support team so they can figure out why
the scanner's not reading your tags right.

Was there not an issue a while back that if the first time the scanner
encountered an artist it used that artistsort for all subsequesnt tags
for that artist?

So for example, I couldn't figure out why Fleetwood Mac were appearing
under 'B' in my artists list.

It turned out that I had a fleetwood mac track on some blues
compilation that some bright spark had filled in an ARTISTSORT tag of
'Blues' on musicbrainz. Because I normally use easytag, which doesn't
show artistsort, I didn't spot this.

The upshot of all this is that the database scan forever associated
ARTIST:Fleetwood Mac with ARTISTSORT:Blues, even though I have 7 FM
albums with the correct artistsort tag.

My memory is quite hazy on this, but I know that I sat down one night
and went through every artist that was in the wrong place and reset all
the artistsort tags and did a full 'wipe database and start again' scan
and they were all ok after that.

Where do U2 appear in your list as a matter of interest, and do you
have them listed on any albums that are compilations etc?

Nice work, team.
Good improvements.

I'd like to see:
Add playlists to artist/album/etc
Podcast access
More pandora and last.fm functions (Love/hate/ban)
Select any song in current playlist to play immediately (rather than
fast forwarding 16 songs, for instance)

Otherwise, nice 1.1 version.

Best,

[slim] Devolo 200AV Homeplug digital noise interference

2008-11-20 Thread luga00

I have 5 squeezebox 3's around the house all connected to a MediaSmart
home server via Devolo 200 AV homeplugs. I've never noticed any
problems with this setup until I happened to plug a pair of headphones
into one of the boxes this morning.

I noticed that whenever the activity light on the Devolo flashes (to
indicate network activity( it causes a digital noise click through the
headphones even when the SB is switched off and playing nothing.

Things really start to hot up when the SB is switched on though. Any
scrolling activity causes digital noise and when a track is eventually
played, the digital interference sounds almost like a fax machine
through a telephone receiver (albeit much fainter).

This is definitely a problem caused by the Devolo homeplugs as I've
tried plugging the ethernet cable directly into the PC and it is
compleletly noise free.

Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to eradicate it?

cheers for any help.
Russ

Let's stop right there, one thing at a time. As far as I know, there
is NOTHING in the various artists logic that would cause an album to
show up under "Various Artists" when every track on that album is
tagged with the exact same artist. So let's start there and once

So find an example album and verify that the ARTIST tag for every track

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-20 Thread idowantapickle

Looks like 1.1 is now on the app store. At the moment I would recommend
uninstalling any previous version before the upgrade, especially if you
had problems scanning in 1.0.

Saying that, theres no reason why a straight update would cause
problems if you have a full database on your device.

This should hopefully fix problems a couple of people have had with
large libraries and server authentication, as well as a few things
people have requested over the last week.

Let us know how you get on, any problems please let us know at

[slim] SB and Boom using gateway IP?

2008-11-20 Thread pounce

I was having some network issues today and both my boom and sb were
knocked offline and seemed very confused. Both were having serious
issues with responding to any menu changes and power cycling didn't
help. They are both pointed to SN. Doing a little checking I found they
are both using my gateway IP (different ports) and are not showing up in
my wireless DHCP table. This seems really odd to me. I couldn't find any
info describing how the networking should be functioning so my question
is... Is this correct?

I have a Phillips Skype phone on the network and the combination is
causing the Sb and Boom to panic. I've been running this combo for a
while, but today they seem to be having issues.

[slim] Album Sorting - Confusion, Flaws, and an unclear path forward

2008-11-20 Thread Random Lurker

A little background:

My music library is just about 1 terabyte. Most of it consists of FLAC
files, which I have very carefully ripped and tagged. I also have some
older MP3 files, some from sources such as eMusic, where I had an
unlimited account, other from my earlier ripping days when drive space
was more expensive.

I have used J River Media Center for years, and love it's almost
infinite capabilities to sort, organize, and display music. I
currently run a plug-in thru my tivo to access the JRMC music on my PC.

However, what I have always wanted is a lossless transport that hooks
up to my receiver with a hand held device that works wirelessly with a
graphical cover art display. The Duet appears to be my dream come true
(and at a price point that is reasonable).

I have downloaded squeezecenter, and have spent a few weeks playing
with softsqueeze, the compiled SqueezePlay app, and assorted plugins.
After all this time, I am still unable to get a basic sorted list of
albums to display correctly.

File tagging:
-Every single file has embedded cover art
-Every single file has a defined ARTISTSORT, ALBUMSORT, and ALBUMARTIST
tag, along with the expected standard title, artist, track, disc, etc.
No compilation tags exist

I want to simply see a list of my albums, sorted by ARTISTSORT first,
then by album.

This seems simple - I understand the options related to compilations, I
have scrubbed my tags with mp3Tag to make sure there are no issues, I
have tried playing around with CustomBrowse to see if that could
illuminate anything. but frustrating random results still occur.

The punchline: many albums do not appear where they should be seen, and
some are randomly placed elsewhere in the alphabet. My testing seems to
indicate much of this is due to Compilation logic and file types.

Key Issues and feedback:
---
*No Simple set of rules for tag priority seem to exist

The wiki or documentation should clearly lay out which tags take
priority, and which ones get overridden. Understanding how the schema
uses these tags would eliminate alot of floundering.

*Compilation logic is overly confusing for end users

I think I am a fairly sophisticated user, and the way the options are
worded and presented is confouding even to me. Once again, a simple
statement (If you set tag X and Y for all files, select these options,
the Compilations will just work) could clear all of this up.

*Compilation logic appears to break sorting

In many cases, I noticed albums not sorted correctly. The culprite
seems to be compilations. I have all compilations listed to appear
under Various Artists... if I have a soundtrack with one track by U2,
an ALBUMARTIST of Various Artists, ARTISTSORT of (Soundtracks), the
soundtrack appears correctly, but other albums I have in my library by
U2 do not appear under the letter U - rather they are randomly
displayed in the Various Artist section.

*Different file types seem to be treated differently

While trying different sort rules, in some scenarios I could get all
FLAC files sorted correctly, but none of the MP3 files. I can see no
reason these would be treated diffently when they have the same tags
fields.

*VirusScan interactions

The setup, logging, and wiki don't quite do a good enough job of
explaining how this can give you grief. Even if you think you disabled
it, McAffee can cause issues. The log presnted by the scanner give
cryptic messages as opposed to explaing that it failed, andf the
Virusscan is almost always the culprit.

*New Schema

This work sounds promising - but will it help me? I can't tell
yet.

FWIW, I had the same crashing problem with version 1.0. It may have
been related to having a large library to scan. But that seems to have
been taken care of in version 1.1 (I tested out some development
builds after reporting the problem). According to the iTunes Music

12 years ago, I took home a cat from the pound: an evil evil black cat.

Funny thing is, years after I started using the alias, my mother told
me she always used to call my Dad Strindberg because of his brooding
character. So perhaps I inherited the nickname without realizing it.

Re: [slim] RadioIO soundpass on Squeezecenter?

2008-11-20 Thread joeriz

I just wantd to follow up on this. I seem to have 'solved' the problem
but I can't say exactly WHY it works nor do I know if the solution will
stick.

>From one of my Squeezeboxes, I tried deleting one of my RadioIO
favorties (which was still playing the old commercial stream) and then
went back through the menu (Internet Radio>RadioIO, etc.) and tried to
play the station and also to re-save it as a favorite. This did not
work...I was still getting the commercial stream. Also, I noticed that
when I went to RadioIO via the menu the first thing that would pop up
under RadioIO was the mesaage to 'Go to RadioIO.com to sign up for a
soundpass...'. However, I noticed that I did NOT get this message when
in SN, only when in SC.

So, on a lark, I went down to my PC and got into SC and started messing
around. I went into 'Favorites' and deleted my RadioIO station favorite
and then added it back by re-selecting it from the RadioIO menu. I
noticed that when I clicked on the link that it gave me when I added it
into favorties it was the stream with 'CF' (Commercial Free) in it.
Sure enough, went back to both my Squeezeboxes and my Transporter and,
viola, commercial free in SC.

I have absolutely no idea why this worked but it did. We'll see if it
sticks.

As mentioned SqueezeNMT allows simple genre/album browsing (at the
moment) and controls the sb3 to play the album or songs. It would take
just an hour to change a current skin. Though I don't have access to a
ps3 but can very easily change the skins to work on a pc browser which
will probably work on the ps3. The current skins will work on the pc
but any changes of the combo will not as the NMT works differently to a
normal browser with form information. All the genre links and album
info etc should work though if you want to just take a look. I am
adding this week amazon album cover pick up also when no album cover is
present. I use it all the time on my lcd tv.

Re: [slim] PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

2008-11-20 Thread MrSinatra

right... i understand but maybe u'd like to have that sb3 somewhere
else?

also, i'm not sure, but perhaps DLNA support would allow for some
control as well? meaning more than just streaming the audio? maybe
via ssh telnet/cli?

i'm out of my depth for sure, but i love the idea of a ps3 that acts as
the audio conduit, and displays currently playing to the TV. the tie in
to slim is that you would then use a SBC to control it. that would be a
cool party app.

I'd expect the origin of mine is pretty obvious.
What doesn't stand out these days is that I had a name that could be
shortened to 8 characters, the max number for a file-name in CP/M days

years now.

Check out the new BeoSound5 (www.beosound5.com) by B&O

It has a cool feature called MOTS (More Of The Same),
which basically makes a automated playlist of music
of the "same" type as some initial song.

Of course I realize this is a major task.

Re: [slim] Delay between two synchronized SB's

2008-11-20 Thread oreillymj

Synching was greatly improved in 7.2.1, but is even better in 7.3. I've
found it stays in synch perfectly when playing back local files stored
on my server. I don't bother trying to synch internet streams as the
web induced latency just makes it too hit & miss.

However, even in 7.2.1 the players should attempt to get back into
synch.

If you look at the server settings page, you'll see some logging you
can enable on various bits of the server including synch. Your server
log will then be able to tell you what the players are up to.

But I think you should just hold out for 7.3 unless your prepared to
try the beta. It's pretty stable at the moment as it's due for release
sometime around early December.

[slim] Now playing not turned on automatically anymore?

2008-11-20 Thread strindberg

I feel a bit confused, I am pretty sure the behavior I am seeing from my
Squeezebox Classic is different from before, but I am not sure if it's
an upgrade or my own tweaking that has changed it.

Anyway, as I remember it, if I would browse for some music, finding an
album, and pressing Play, the music would start playing, and after a
while (perhaps 10 seconds), the Now playing screen would show.

Today, the screen keeps showing wherever I was browsing when I hit
play, i.e. somewhere in the browse menu structure.

I have set the SB to show the Now playing screen after 10 seconds of
non-activity, and then I have MusicInfoSCR set as my default screen.

So, has there been a change in the software in the last updates?

[slim] Delay between two synchronized SB's

2008-11-20 Thread soaringeagle

Hi,

I have a SB Boom and an SB Classic. Most of the time they stay in sync
with one another and there is no noticeable delay between the two
units.

However, occassionally for reasons that I'm still to work out, they get
out of sync and a delay of 2 or so seconds is introduced. I have tried
the following things,
- Stopping and starting a track
- Skipping tracks
- Unsyncing and Resyncing
- Stoppig and starting Squeeze Center.
- In and out of standby.

The only thing that I've found that reliably gets them back into sync
is to disconnect the power and then to start them back up again.

As I'm new to SB's I don't know how they sync up. Would be great if
someone could provide some insight into why the above things don't get
it back into sync and cycling power is the only thing that seems to
bring it back into life. Appeciate any hints as to what could be
causing it, how to avoid it and how to snap it out of it in a more
graceful way when they do get out of sync.

Thanks

Paul

Re: [slim] Freezing, slow response - how I resolved it

2008-11-20 Thread poyntzj

I tried all the firmwares as they were mentioned.
I really thought my SB3 was dead and the wired one working made me
think that more and more. I even had a call raised and was getting
ready to send it back for repair / swap but decided to look at the
server first.

What started the doubt was when the SN worked fine for hours without a
drop, but the clincher was when my Boom arrived and it had the same
problem

I was lucky in that I had an old HTPC I could do some testing with

My favorite reading! I always wanted my son to be just like Calvin.
Luckily for me, he isn't :-)

My name is fairly obvious. My family has no imagination so my
grandfather was Samuel Edward, my dad Howard Nathaniel, me Howard
Samuel and my brother Nathaniel Edward. Apparently creativity either
never existed or died out generations ago.

The avatar is a picture of my son when he was about 6. It's always
