[slim] 7.3 using 100% CPU on Win XP
Downloaded 7.3 yesterday and twice now I've found squeeze centre thrashing and using 100% of the CPU. I've had a try with the controller player, other than that I've simply being playing music from my local PC. I'll try and work out what causes it but if it keeps doing it I'll have to go back to 7.2, put some info below and an extract from the log file. [slim] Never finish scanning my library with 7.3?
Yesterday I installed the Perl Source code 7.3 on my NAS. It scanned my files, and I never looked into this. But a couple of hours ago I did a rescan (I added new numbers to my collection). Now it is still busy... It says: SqueezeCenter has finished scanning your music collection. Total time: 10:40:38. And is still counting. Yes I know it stopped scanning. Softsqueeze does not natively support WMA whereas the hardware player can play WMA natively. What OS is your SC on ? If your SC is on Windows, WMA decode for Softsqueeze is included. If your SC is on Linux or OSX then you will have install a 3rd party app to decode WMA for Softsqueeze. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56402 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have it installed on both Windows XP and Leopard. Searching on other posts I have installed AlienBBC on both. My main pc would Windows XP when I buy Squeezebox so I don't really mind if it does not play on my Mac. But still on my PC it does not play. What other software I need to install on XP in order to play? Also I read somewhere that Squeezebox has the codecs to play Windows Media streams. Is that true? Re: [slim] blank display on SB after 7.3 Update
Looks similar to my experience here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56198 In short a clear install might help if the uppgrade won't do it. some old setting or old plugin might be causing trouble . You can try to remove all 3:rd party plugins and erase you cache folder first before reinstalling everything. If you erase cache you have to be patient as your dB is gone so SC have to rescan, web UI can be a little wierd while this is going on. -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56415 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] blank display on SB after 7.3 Update
Hi, after updating my SC from 7.2 to 7.3 my 2 SB updated the firmware as aspected (Boom -> 40; SB2 -> 120). But then both display a blank/black diplay :-( I can control them via webfontend and they both play music from library and radio. The SC (on W2K Server) works good. Perhaps the firmware update fails; ho can i repeat the firmware update? Is there anybody with the same problem or someone with any idea??? If you are talking about the "Play Shuffled" menu item, you can just tap the first track of an album and it will play the whole thing. But again, as garym notes, currently iPeng only shuts of "shuffle" through the NowPlaying overlay. There can also be a delay in the reaction to tapping the shuffle icon since it waits for the server response to change. -- pippin --- see iPeng at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Mixed-up tagging
Having installed SqueezeCenter recently (first 7.2 and now 7.3), I've just done a complete scan of my MP3 music - about 6,500 tracks. It's all organised well and all has ID3v2.3 tags. What I've noticed is that in some cases (only a few), SqueezeCenter thinks there are several albums under one artist, when there is in fact only one. Take Abba, for example. I have a single album (Gold - Greatest Hits), but in SqueezeCenter, it shows 6 albums, all with the same name, same artist name, same album art, etc. The tracks within the album are split across the "six" albums. Looking at the tags for the tracks, they all look entirely proper and consistent - no differences at all. Looking at one of the virtual albums (the last in the list), I see four tracks. I've no idea why THESE tracks for this album specifically. Even the tracks aren't listed in the right order. Has anyone seen this and does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix it? It's a bit annoying because it means that I can't actually play the album properly. Hi, 15min for boot is too long. Did you ever try a NetReset (thats how we call this in GY). The last PC I had did also use this 15min, and after the NetReset it works normal! So to do the NetReset: 1. Shut down Your System 2. If availible, switch off the switch behind the PC where the Power Supply is 3. Disconnect the Power Cable 4. With the Powercable beeing disconnected press the Powerswitch on the front panel. and hold it down for 20 seconds. My reading of what you've said here suggests to me that you're proposing that the server should apply ReplayGain to the audio samples prior to sending it to the players. If I've misunderstaood what you're saying, my apologies. If however that is what you're saying, then this is absolutely, unequivocally the wrong way to do it. The audio samples *must* be sent to each player unmolested, for a variety of reasons: 1. Some players might have ReplayGain enabled, others not. Some may want to use track gain, others album gain. You can't apply the ReplayGain at the server end once for all clients. 2. The ReplayGain adjustment (which is done in the digital domain) should be applied after the signal has been widened to 24 bits within the player (in order to preserve resolution). If it's done in the server, you'd have to widen it to 24 bits, which might involve on-the-fly decoding to WAV, widening and either re-encoding back to FLAC or acceptance of increased network bandwidth requirements. 3. Some of us run SqueezeCenter on low-power servers, which may not have the CPU available to perform all this stuff at the server. 4. There may be some more reasons I've not thought of. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30316 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The ability to run with lower effective permissions, for me at least, was a major reason to switch my windows box from 2K - even with the annoying validation stuff MS started doing with XP. [slim] How to switch receiver from Wireless to Wired?
Just hooked up my new Duet - works great, love it. [slim] No Sound from Duet and Boom
Suddenly while listening to music this morning, the sound went out on both my Boom and Duet which were synchronized with the 7.3 upgrade since yesterday. I have rebooted the server computer and Squeezecenter appears to be working normally (Vista SP1 with Windows firewall) The display on both the Boom and the Duet remote both indicate that music should be playing (time ticking off the track, volume control adjusts, CD art displayed, etc.) but there is NO SOUND from either. I rebooted the router too (Linksys WRT54GL running the Tomato firmware). I even de-synchronized the players. No happiness there either. Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping
Perhaps I am confused here, but I would think that a server-side fix could be implemented as follows: If the file has no replaygain tags, do nothing. Else, if the file has replaygain tags, calculate from the track peak and track replaygain whether the adjustment will make the track clip. If it will, replace the replaygain with the maximum possible value that will not cause clipping. Perform the same function for the album replaygain. Send the file along and let the player apply album, track, or no replaygain based upon its settings. I believe that this will not be particularly resource-intensive on the server, because it really only has to perform the calculation when the replaygain value is positive. Are there other ways to apply positive gain in the digital domain other than through a replaygain adjustment? Unless we are applying positive digital gain we cannot cause digital clipping (bit overflow), correct? Digital clipping may have occurred earlier in the recording chain, and we may have "flat" peaks, but that damage is done, and whatever information we have left by definition fits within the 16 bits we have (or 24, or 48, or whatever the file contains). Also it appears as if you have two instances of SC starting up.. Can't really tell because I can't see the paths. In task manager, how many processes do you have running. On a laptop if it's much over 40-45 you may want to eliminate some of the. Only you know what needs to be running and better yet what needs to be in startup. My music server has 32 processes running including SC and Squeeze tray. In my start up folder I have SqueezeTray only. MSCONFIG shows 8 startup programs. You can't get much cleaner than that with Windows, but you can get much closer. Clear your caches and temp files (Internet and others). Run a defrag and clean up your statup files. Make certain you have 1 firewall only. Mulitple firewalls are an invitation for disaster. Get rid of all but one virus, maleware, etc. program that is running. Most of the time after taking these steps things improve drastically especially start up times. You may also want to run a good maleware scan. My favorite is Malewarebytes. Look in your start up folder and the All Users start up folder and get rid of anything in there that you don't need at start up. A good example of stuff that doesn't need to start is Adobe products, Photoshop products, printers tools from folks like HP, even Quicktime in most cases doesn't need to be in start up. Double check your virus/maleware stuff and especially the firewalls. I don;t know what the Rain things are, but I bet they really aren't necessary amd may be eating up CPU cyles. I think you'll like malewarebytes (google can find it) You don't have to do the paid one, just the free downlaod scan. Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping
I don't really se the problem unless it's a problem today already. Everything should still work as before, the only thing is that the replay gain processing engine should see gain tags adjusted to be non-clipping instead of the real gain tags. How is this done today is the real question! If the file is sendt to the receiver before replay gain processing is applyed this is a good thing. The only different thing should then be that the Squeezecenter server is adjusting the gain tags before it is sent to the receiver, so that the receiver sees the non-clipping gain tags not caring if it's adjusted or not and applyes the replaygain logic as usual. As I can see, this is a server operation to do, and everything will still function as they always have if my logic is correct, even though the receiver is doing the real work. If however the operation is already done at the server today, i still don't see the problem as no one has complained yet, the only difference will still be that the replay gain is adjusted before processing. If they however change the whole process and location of the process as it is today it seems a bit strange and unnecessary. -- marsboer marsboer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30316 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Yes, quite so. The server can do a trivial calculation to limit positive RG value so as to prevent clipping, and then send that adjusted RG value to the player instead of blindly sending the original RG value. There is no argument about this. What I think Moonbase was proposing was that the server should actually apply the RG value and alter the audio samples before they are sent to the player - that's what I was objecting to (in the strongest possible terms). However, as I said in an earlier post (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=369178&postcount=15), the presence of attenuation via the player's digital volume control adds additional subtleties. If we want to take that into account and end up with a "gold standard" solution, then as far as I can make out it can only be solved in the player's firmware. I'm fairly relaxed on this issue. I certainly wouldn't want to insist that the "gold standard" be implemented if it were to seriously delay getting the basic problem fixed. I'd be happy with a simple server side fix that just reins back a positive RG value on the assumption that the player will be at 100% volume. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30316 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] 2009- Important Year for Slim Devices Founders
Just a quick comparison of another open source audio company that was taken over and subsequently pretty much destroyed along with the rest of the community that supported the orginal product. That company was Phatnoise, the company that bought them; Harman International. I have one of their Phatbox units in my car, and I love the unit. Unfortunately, time and lack of further development has caused the system to start showing its age. A couple of guys have done some further interesting things, but none of the original developer have been heard from since...at least to my knowledge. I think the SD and Logitech merger (at least to this point) has been an example of the right way to merge a company with broader marketing/exposure with a niche device. I have one of the first Squeezeplayer Classics (silver face/no signatures!). And I love it. The partnership with Infrant lead to my purchase of an original NV. It's a great integrated system. The fact that Logitech didn't materially change the product (and has allowed development to continue with a competitor, Netgear) has prompted me to buy units for my dad, brother, and of course a controller for myself! -- JSanchez JSanchez's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3195 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56164 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Not to throw a monkeywrench into this whole discussion, but couldn't SqueezeCenter quickly scan its entire database for the maximum amount it will need to scale back positive ReplayGain values, and then apply the same adjustment to *ALL* tracks? Upside: all tracks/albums would again have the same volume, and you wouldn't have to worry about one album seeming quieter than the rest because of clipping-avoidance. Downside: everything could get very quiet, perhaps so quiet that some small powered speakers wouldn't be able to compensate and achieve the same volume. Re: [slim] Positive ReplayGain and Clipping
CatBus: You have misunderstood the whole concept of replaygain. Adjusting all tracks with the same gain will result inn the exact same volume differences between tracks as you would get with no replaygain. Replaygain is not the same as real playback volume. It's a value that says how much the volume should be adjusted on each track to give the impression of the same volume between tracks relative to a given reference RMS level (89db) In other words, replay gain is only relative to each tracks own RMS volume and therefore it must be different from track to track with different overall volume to have any function. -- marsboer marsboer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30316 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB1 Not updating firmware
Kinda surprising, as the SB1 firmware hasn't been updated in years. Must be a really old Squeezebox that either hasn't been used recently, or was running with a very old version of Slim Server. Can't imagine too many people who are still alive have seen an SB1 take a firmware update from any recent versions of SqueezeCenter, so this may be the first time it's even been attempted. I'm not really clear on the problem with the attenuation via the player's digital volume control. I would expect this to be additional attenuation, after replaygain is applied. Re: [slim] Problems Streaming radio stations
I'm seeing intermittent problems playing WMA streams now. Some work, some don't. I have one that worked recently, where the radio station intro plays, the radio show information is display, and I even an image for the radio show. Then silence. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56402 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] End of the line for Squeezebox Classic?
hah, i though the same thing until I read the fine print. It's the end (much delayed) of the Slim Devices branded units is all. They must have hid this batch hidden somewhere, since they've been shipping Logitech branded units for ages. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56341 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
