[slim] Internet Radio Sampling
Step one. I ripped a lot of my CDs to FLAC and realised that was the way forward. Step two. I bought a decent but inexpensive DAC (a Beresford) Step three. I bought a SB3 to get rid of the noisy Shuttle PC frot the lounge and to sidestep re sampling and other sound card issues. BUT if find I spend far more time listening to Classical Internet Radio. Radio Bartok at 320Kb/s is very nice, but Classic FM at 128, Radio 3 at 128 and a few others are very pleasant to listen to and generally better than my Quad FM Tuner. The FLAC are clearer and cleaner, but I do enjoy the pot-luck of radio, and wth so many classical channels to choose from if something comes on air not to my taste of my mood I just flip channels. Now to the point. A lot is may of the bitrate/quality issue, but what is the sampling rate used in the transmissions? If the majority of output is from CD and the transmission is not at that rate we are back in the resampling quagmire - but I guess with compressed formats, there is less to be lost. So what sampling frequency is used, and what are the losses involved? But I still enjoy the streamed radio stations. -- Labarum Brian Squeezebox 3 Classic and Virgin Cable Box Beresford DAC TC-7510 MK6/4 - Quad 405-2 refurbished by 405man Quart 980s German Tower Loudspeakers. Sample freq is a key factor in determining bitrate (obviously) so you'll find some very low bitrate stations will use 22.05kHz. In my experience anything decent (96kbps+) will usually use 44.1kHz. [slim] New user with some basic questions
Hello all, I just bought my SB Duet (haven't received it yet) and was hoping some of the experienced users here could help me to get the most out of it. Here is my current (pre-SB) setup. I have all of my music stored on a Dell Poweredge 2650 sever (running Win 2K3 server) with external SATA drives configured as RAID5. I also have a simple WinXP box in my home theater running a custom app (written by a freind) which is just a simple mp3 player/jukebox. The video output of that PC is just another video source to my home theater and the audio output is also handled this way. So when listening to the jukebox the systems video source is switched to display the PC video while the audio is coming from the PCs sound card. The jukebox app is then controlled via a standard windows user interface with a wireless mouse. This setup has worked fine for several years but has its limitations. First (and most importantly) I have no way of including new music. It has a database which holds the actual path to all tracks in my library but the database is limited to 999 CD artist per alphabet character (ie. 999 CDs by Artist starting with S). Over the years my collection has outgrown this for many letters. Second it is only capable of playing mp3s. I have my entire library stored in flac. To support this player I have to store a second copy in mp3. The Squeezebox's support for flac was my primary reason for buying it. Third there is no way to control the thing from a remote (must use the mouse). This means you must actually be in that room to chage tracks or playlists. I bought the SqueezeBox Duet because out of the box it seems that it fixes all of my issues. However, there are a couple of features of the old jukebox application that my wife says she simply must have. First, the old jukebox app has a screensaver (the display, in the home theater, is a plasma so static images are a big no no). This screensaver is two sprites that bounce around the screen. The sprites each show a thumbnail image of the album art as well as the artist, track title (as text). One sprite shows the info for the currently play track while the other shows that info for the next track in the playlist. Also, the sprite showing the info of the currently playing track includes a progressbar indicating the tracks current play position. The second is not really a feature of the player but a rather a feature of the mp3 files. I have all of my mp3s volume normalized (via Mp3Gain). The problem is that when I switch over to the Squeezebox I plan to point it to my lossless (flac) library not the mp3 library. The flac files do not have (and I do not want them to)the audio info altered in any way (ie. volume normalization). They do however have the ReplayGain tags. So after that long explanation here are my questions. 1) Does the Squeezbox have any means to show a display on a PC on the network? 2) If yes, are there any nice UI's for it that include some type of screensaver that would include the same information (curret track, next track) 3) Does the Squeezbox handle ReplayGain tags in flac files for volume normalization? [slim] Synchronization for dummies
I have tried out syncing 2 players in the past but never used it for any length of time. Yesterday I was trying to sync players and could not figure it out. Here are two scenarios I would like to accomplish and would appreciate some guidance on how to achieve what I want--either with the built-in sync options or the Other Players plug-in. I'm running Squeezecenter 7.4. Scenario 1: Player A is on and playing. I want to bring a Player B into sync with Player A but without losing the playlist on Player A. So player A would just continue in what it is playing, and the same sound would begin coming from Player B. How do I know which player is the one that keeps its playlist when I initiate the sync? Scenario 2: I would like to have 3 players using the same playlist but not necessarily all playing at the same time. I just want to be able to go from one room to another and have the same playlist picking up where the other one left off, but only turning on the player for the room I am in. In other words, I want to turn off the player in the room I am leaving, go to a new room and turn on that player to pick up the same place in the playlist. Is this one even possible? Yesterday when I was messing around I couldn't seem to get more than two players in a sync group. Adding a third player always removed the second one. -- MeSue Sue http://www.last.fm/user/MeSue MeSue's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=985 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59032 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

My experiences with the above scenarios: you have to remember which player you have the playlist on. If Player A is the one with the playlist, just hit the sync button in the dropdown box at the top of the SC webpage window and select Player B. Then B will start playing A's playlist. As for your second scenario, my setup does not work in the way you are envisioning. In fact, say I've sync'ed Player B with A as described above. If I turn off A because I leave that room, B will continue playing A's playlist anyway, it won't stop playing. And B will resume the playlist where IT left off, not where A left off when I turned off A. -- sc53 sc53's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8690 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59032 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Network Metrics and the SB??
Hello All, I am having a problem convincing my Squeezebox (Classic V3, I guess it's now called) to work on my new network. Here's what I have: I have my SB wired directly to my router, and my PC also wired to the router. However, my PC has a wireless card that 'imports' the internet wirelessly from one of my neighbors that is too stupid to know about encryption (so I'm not using my network for the internet at all). The problem I have is that I have to assign a lower metric to the 'wired' network to get my wireless internet working, and then the SB does not work anymore, even though it sees my PC on the network. Okay, I have the Other Players plugin and have used the grab/send playlist... works great! I thought that if they were synced that this could happen automatically, but if I have to grab the playlist every time I move from one room to another that is fine. Back to scenario #1, based on the 2 answers I have received, it sounds like the behavior is different depending on whether you are using the webUI or the controllerUI. That would explain my confusion after messing with it yesterday. So from the WebUI, I want to have the player A selected, then choose sync and pick player B and B will begin playing A's playlist. From the Controller it is opposite; if I want player A's playlist on B, I have to go to B and sync it to A and then B will start to play A's playlist. Have I got that right? Re: [slim] Network Metrics and the SB??
Metrics apply when you have complex routing scenarios where there are multiple ways to get to the same address (or more precisely, the same address space). In other words, if you have two interfaces, both on the 192.168.2.x subnet, and the computer needs to send a packet to 192.168.2.10 - it needs to somehow decide which one to use - it will choose the interface with the lowest metric. If the two interfaces are on different subnets then it will simply use the one on the same subnet as the target address. Now this gets more complex again when you get routers (which act as gateways) involved, but my guess is that both your network and your neighbours are on the same subnet, which is causing the confusion. Change yours to one of the other non-routable ranges and you should be OK. It'd also be smart to disable DHCP and rely on static IPs, as your router may be advertising itself as a gateway via DHCP, and that could screw things up again. But my main advice would be to get your own internet connection. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59037 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs. AirTunes Setup
I hadn't tried Squeezeplay for many months, so I tried a nightly with my library and with Pandora. I have a couple of thoughts: - The unified UI is quite nice. Having the same general philosophy on a PC, SB and (eventually, I assume) iPhone solves my problem - my wife will have no problem. - The sync doesn't work for me. I have overlapping zones, and Squeezeplay on a Mac runs +/1 1/2 a second or so from the Squeezebox. When standing between them it sounds like gibberish. I'll keep waiting. Thanks for your help. Ron talbotpat;388663 Wrote: You can sync music between Squeezeboxes and clients running on computers. I am playing the same stream right now on my Duet, the Duet remote controller, SqueezePlay running on WinXP, and SqueezePlay running on my MacBook Pro. The syncing has gotten noticeably better now with SqueezePlay vs. SoftSqueeze. With SoftSqueeze, the players tended to 'creep apart' by several hundred milliseconds no matter what buffer settings and correction windows I tried. With SqueezePlay it's light years better. The Controller playback and sync is still Beta, but works well enough for me for what I use it for. As for ripping and transcoding/converting, I use Max on the MacBook Pro. It's good stuff. There are good options on Windows as well that are relatively brainless. -- EyeRonik1 EyeRonik1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58639 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Multi disc sets not in order
I agree that this is broken in the latest release (7.3.2). Multi-Disc Compilation (e.g., Various Artists) Albums appear as separate listings for each disc, even though settings are set to group as one disc. Also interesting is that each track on the 1st Disc of the group is numbered, 1, 2, 3...N. But the 2nd Disc in the group has it's tracks labelled 2-1, 2-2, 2-3,...2-N. 3rd Disc in the group has its tracks labelled 3-1, 3-2, etc. Multi-Disc Single Artist Albums set to group as one disc work fine. *Bradley -- Bradley Bradley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58606 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store
pippin;390805 Wrote: I think we still have a misunderstanding. ... So if you want to write a new plugin TODAY that is supposed to be supported by iPeng you could probably start by writing one that supports SBC (and omit use of all-too-fancy key codings). Which is why I follow the route described above. There will be very likely some enhancements to the protocol for iPeng that I'll propose (stuff that's simply different; transparent icons and things...) but that should generally not hinder support for other devices, notably the SBC (and SqueezePlay) except if you code for iPeng's very special capabilities whatever those will be (right now there would probably be none). Fair enough about controller like plugins, but the OP was talking about volume control etc which is not something that iPeng should have to worry about. Thats embedded in the server side plugins. The whole point of IR blaster is that it is using the headphone jack on the SB3 to send IR commands to other devices (like turn amps on/off or to adjust volumes). This is different from extending the experience of the controller or iPeng to additional UI player features or UI centric add ons. -- Aesculus Chris Aesculus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14876 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
