Re: [slim] SqueezeBox3 performance problems

2009-02-10 Thread amino

Thanks for your reply. My server is running on a pretty old computer,
but the hardware is surely good enough for SqueezeCenter. It is a 3.0
GHz Pentium 4 with 2 GB RAM and two quite new hard drives. I used to
suspect the server and I didn't do any research, but I've watched the
performance monitor now there doesn't seem to be any bottlenecks and
since the Boom is so fast I think the problem is elsewhere.

I did some more testing yesterday and I found an interesting thing. If
I for instance browse to Music Library - Artists and then, just like
you say, scroll the entire list at once, my Boom will do it nice and
smooth and accelerating when it should, while my SqueezeBox3 always
halts twice. It sounds like a caching thing...

I don't think it's just the pauses that makes my SqueezeBox3 a little
bit more sluggish. I get the impression that every single scroll is
maybe a 100th of a second slower on it. Maybe that has something to do
with the larger display???

I want to clarify for all non-Squeezebox-owners that it is definitely
not slow. This is all about fine tuning, and I'm the type of guy that
removes most of the graphical effects from the Windows immediately
after every fresh install. Setting MenuShowDelay to 0
(http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=42225) is the first thing I
do, and no, I don't use Vista. :)

7.4/8.0 will have automatic update download. As this will be stored in WHS'
add-in folder, it should automatically be announced to the connector.

2 there are network issues (internet connection down etc.)

Will see what I can do. Some general status information

I guess I am thinking the UI part is all that is needed. I just tested
the fact that I can lower the volume by sliding the volume control to
the left and then if I slide it back to right before it has a chance to
reset the UI in the iPeng to show the volume at 100%, I can actually
start to increase the volume back some. Of course this does not allow
me to increase the volume above where I started from originally, but I
think it proves that from iPeng I can control the volume in both
directions through the IRBlaster. Hence why I think the enhancement
needed for IRBlaster users is just a way in the UI to still increase
the volume even though the SB3 thinks the volume is 100%.

 I hope that makes sense.

 Thanks.
The problem is: iPeng's slider doesn't send volume up or volume
down commands, it sends mixer volume xxx with xxx being the absolute
volume figure to set the volume to. The plugin then determine what kind
of change that is and generates the internal commands accordingly.

re your service startup: did you goto start/programs/squeezeserver and
set the startup options to server.
I created another user WHS Services w/o all admin rights and use that
to run the serv under. just enter username/password and it should
work.
if not, login under the second user and repeat process.
Then after ologging off, the service should still run.

I don't think it is a good idea having any app using admin privilidges

good luck!

[slim] Help with Last.FM, please

2009-02-10 Thread mark12356

Hi all,
I have created a Last.FM account from my PC, and discovered I like the

under Music Services. When I tried to connect, it told me I need to
create a squeezecentre account to make it work, so I did, put in the
PIN for my Transporter, and all seemed well.

Except the Last.FM option no longer appears on the lit of options under
Music Services. What's going on here, pleas, how do I make this work?

Thanks,

You can scrobble your songs with last.fm so it is registered on

If you want to use lastfm as an radiostation on your controler, this

I don't have IR blaster or a remote controllable amp so I cannot test

Sorry I may be confused about what is technically happening. I was
just trying to describe functionally what I observed when using the
iPeng App. I don't have the plugin installed. When I was referring to
VolumeUp and VolumeDown, I can actually see on the display of my PreAmp
a visual confirmation that it is receiving via the IR port a VolumeUp
or VolumeDown command (in addition to actually hearing the change).

So however it is that you are accomplishing this today, the IR commands
make it to my PreAmp, I just have no way from the iPeng App to increase
the volume because the volume slider is always at 100% unless I slide
it to the left at which point the volume on my PreAmp goes down and
then is a second or two the iPeng App volume slider will reset to
display 100% (I assume because the volume on the SB3 is fixed at
100%).

On the default web interface, there is a button labeled louder to the
right of the volume indicator. When I click that it sends the IR
command to increase my volume even though the SB3 is at 100% (same
thing happens with the SBC). Is there a way technically you can do the
same thing as the louder button on the web interface and implement it in
the idea you already have for the iPeng App UI? Sorry if I am over
simplifying the situation. Based on what I have observed, it just seems
like everything would work fine if there was a UI mechanism to increase
the volume when the SB3 (and iPeng App display) is at 100%.

Thanks for considering this as I really like the iPeng App. I am still
using it for the other SB's in the house that are connected directly to
amps. However in the main living room where we listen the most it is
limited today by not being able to increase the volume and I instead go
back to the SBC there.

I agree with you Mark. If I had to guess at what the difference could
be, I think it would be limited to:
1) Difference in wireless connectivity. The percentages don't mean
much here so they can be mostly ignored. The Boom may have a more
consistent wireless connection for whatever reason, even though it is
further away.
2) IR repeating may not seem as fast as the boom knob. It's not clear
if the OP is using the boom knob or a remote control. Try using the
same remote for both devices and see if the behavior is different.
3) The Boom display is smaller so it is theoretically possible that it
could be faster because less information is needed to update the
display. I would be surprised if this were the issue.

Yeah, I use a harmony 555 without any trouble, except that it feels a

You should be able to improve that by tweaking the timings in the
Harmony setup, it's default is quite slow (therefore reliable).

I did a little testing and if I use the -O option (for oldplayer type)
then the setting page shows replaygain as an option.

But then pause does not work, from the web interface or CLI.

Maybe this is something I need squeezeslave v8-26 for, to specify other

The Cradle has a wide AC transformer on it and the device is outputting
DC so a wide range of AC input voltages (100 to 240 VAC) are covered.
The wall wart uses slide on plug adapters for most AC outlets. The
voltage of ones country shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know if they are including all the adapters or if they are
including the adapter for only the country it’s shipped to. IOW, at
this time I wouldn't have a buddy in the US buy one and send it to you
unless you have friends at the Cellular store that will give you the
correct adapter.

Hey Howard,

Have you tried a Transporter for 30 days? It didn't even take 15 days
for me to decide to replace my Esoteric Transport and Dodson DA-217
MK2-D Digital Processor as my main digital source with the Transporter.
I was very skeptical that a NMP was going to be able to match my CD
setup at a fifth of the cost, but that was indeed the case. So I sold
my Esoteric Transport. I got to good of a deal on the Dodson to let it
go and its nice to have a great DAC around anyway. Speaking of DACs,
the Bel Canto e.One DAC3 D/A processor makes a great partner to the
Receiver or Classic but sadly that combo costs $900 more then a
Transporter and will not play 24/96 files native like the TP will.
There is a ton of value in the Transporter.

If it doesn't change your mind then send it back before the 30 days are
up.

Not a huge hassle, but it does require remotely going to the server.

Wasn't this originally a product designed, at an engineering approach,
to transporting music from your computer to your stereo? The rough
beginnings were never grandparent friendly. It requires a basic
knowledge of computing, networking, and a rough understanding of
digital music.

The duet and squeezecenter was a turn towards a more friendly approach,
but people still refuse to try understand basic computing or even
reading information on the product. It's shocking how many users don't
even know what a network is, yet still buy a squeezebox.

This seems to be the opposite outside in Australia.

[slim] Backlight/non-backlight remote

2009-02-10 Thread Richard Scales
When the 'new' remote control (the one that ships with the transporter) was
released as an accessory, I ordered one up to use with the Slimp3/squeezebox
collection.

Nice remote - very pleased - except that there was no evidence of any
backlighting going on.

I queried this with the reseller (UK based company) - they thought that it
should have been backlight - though sadly I did not pursue this - I assumed
that there were perhaps two versions and somewhere along the way - I had
received the wrong one but had decided is was not worth the hassle to
resolve the situation.

So, please can anyone confirm whether or not there are actually two versions
of the remote. If not - how might I activate the backlight? Or if there are
two versions - does anyone know if I could add the components (LED's etc) to
make mine light up?

I have not yet checked under the hood but I would be surprised if I could
not add the missing bits (if they are in fact missing!)

Regards
