Isn't the battery some type of an easily available cellphone battery?

I've seen similar reports before. But I've not been able to reproduce it.
SC is running fine on my W7b. What other application are you running? Any
3rd party hardware drivers? Antivirus?

From a technical pov I'm convinced this is a Windows 7 issue. No normal
application should be able to make Windows die with a BOD. That's why I've
been asking for drivers or antivirus: they're often running at a much
lower level than applications which makes Windows more vulnerable.

Ahh. Just re-read the thread and came across this. What we have here
(for us long suffering European residents) seems to be a chink in the
Logitech "you have to use our decrepit European distribution system so
we can keep our differential pricing" armour. It still peeves me when I
remember trying to get a boom when they first came out and was told that
'we have boxes full in our back room' in Mountain View and the UK
delivery at higher price was 4 weeks. Just for grins, you should see
the places that Slim will ship to out of the US (have a look at the
drop down box on their website). I am not sure all of them are even
inhabited. Pretty much everywhere in the world except Western Europe.

I may need to move.

Wow Howard, what would even lead you to think that? It's not a trial,
it's a 30 day money back if not satisfied guarantee. I was interested
in buying multiple returned Transporters and Slim Devices said they
don't sale them (and commented that few get returned anyway).
Transporters are actually sold brand new to the buyers. Slim Devices
guarantees that they will take it back before the end of 30 days if
your not satisfied. They don't ask you up front if you want a trail or
used unit nor do they offer any such program. Everybody that buys one,
gets a brand new factory sealed Transporter. Slim Devices has no way of
knowing if your going to keep it or not, so it *-HAS-* to be brand new
because you probably will keep it.

Additionally, the Transporter is the one of the devices that Slim
Devices sells that has a decent profit margin on it. They are not going
to get rich off the sales of Transporters, but they are going to keep
making them as long as there is demand and decent retail price
support.

I love mine and was going to put one in each of our vacation homes, our
two luxury rentals, and pick one up for my dad on the cheap, if I could
have bought the returns. I think another reason the returns don't go on
the used market is to help support the current retail price. If the
returns are not sold to the public, they can't end up on EBAY, which is
probably a wise decision.

[slim] SqueezeCenter and Windows 7 Beta

2009-02-11 Thread bstromberg1

Hello,
Let’s preface that this is general discussion and I fully understand
that Windows 7 is developmental software and that nowhere on the slim
devices website it says they fully support windows 7. This is solely
for general discussion/feedback on Windows 7 along with SqueezeCenter.

My son and I are trying out the new Windows 7 beta on a few computers,
and have come across a few issues. Since we have installed
SqueezeCenter, it seems that the computer will hang for a few seconds
and then issue a BSOD (Blue screen of death). We are not sure if this
is aimed directly at SqueezeCenter and probably isn't 100%) but it
seems like every time the pc crashes SqueezeCenter has been running.
SqueezeCenter does seem to run fine though for hours, but just am
curious if anyone else is having any issues. For developers, the BSOD
page has not eluted to SqueezeCenter specifically.
Has anyone else had any success/crashes with SqueezeCenter?

Appreciate any input,
-Bob

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2009-02-11 Thread SamG

I also recently compiled squeezeslave-0.8 on a Fedora x64 system. It is
working pretty well at the moment, though there are a couple of FLAC
files on which it consistently stutters.

One interesting thing I noticed was that hitting the pause button on
the web interface and then hitting play starts the current track from
the beginning. I am pretty sure that version 0.7 did not exhibit this
behaviour. This occurs with or without the -O flag. SoftSqueeze on my
Windows PC does not do this. Rather it starts the track from the point
at which it was paused. Is this the expected behaviour or a bug?

I tried attaching the binary file in case you would like to post it on
SourceForge, but the gzipped tarball exceeded the forum file size
limit. Please let me know how I can upload this file. This was compiled
for v0.8-25 with alsa support, portaudio v19 and the daemonize patch
applied.

What plugins are you after?
I use iPeng native 1.05 to browse and see what is playing, but if I
want to make a MusicIP mix then I use the iPeng plugin 0.53 via Safari
on my iPod touch. The plugin allows me to make a mix using MusicIP and
save it. The only other plugin I would use is the Server Power Control,
but as I have to manually turn my amp off I can live with using the SB3
remote to turn the server off.

Re: [slim] FireFox error connecting to SqueezeCenter

2009-02-11 Thread snarlydwarf

FF can be somewhat paranoid about "busy" scripts.

Basically, it has a timer and if the script runs "too long", it
complains. But it neglects to figure out "oh, wait, the script is
running too long because I am running a bunch of stuff in the
background". Ie, it is measureing 'real time' not 'cpu time of the
script', so a slow or just plain busy machine will trigger it.

I get it periodically at slashdot when I have a bunch of things going
on... I just click the continue and go on (it beats the old behavior
where a loop in a script would drag the browser to its knees while it
tried to figure things out..)

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server

2009-02-11 Thread N00dles

I got in with WHS on the ground floor as part of the beta. "Discovered"
the SqueezeBox Duet last year and revolutionised my music listening
using the WHS (my review on We Got Served here:
http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/2008/04...squeezeserver/) Have installed
the SC WHS Add-in which appears to work well.

from the point of view of managing SC from within the WHS Console if
you take the view that it is the WHS administrator that will be the
only one accessing the Console then a tab showing that Sc is installed
and running would be helpful as well as the ability to restart SC from
within the Console. As has been already pointed out most other
functions are accessible via the SC browser interface.

>From what I have read so far starting SC automatically on a WHS restart
has been addressed.

Having an option to automatically install or at least be told about a
newer version of SC would also be handy.

I don't know if it is within the remit of SC or possibly as a plug-in
that would rip CD's onto the WHS integrated into SC OK so there is
RipNAS and others that would do this but there would appear to be some
merit in integrating into SC?

Anyway keep up the great work, I certainly encourage anyone who cares
to listen to download SC and use SoftSqueeze to experience what a great
bit of hardware\software SqueezeBox are and SqueezeCenter are.

Edit: try taking the SB3 to your router and plugging it in with an

It works again when i log on locally on my computer.
The trick is to not logon to the server running squeezecenter with

Yes, using either the web interface or remote control this is easy to
do. Just hit the "right" button on the remote control when in "now
playing". Then scroll down the "More Info" and hit right again and
you will be able to scroll through details like this. From the web

[slim] Update Duet Controller as remote for your amp, now with volume control

2009-02-11 Thread Egnos

To control your amp with your Duet Controller you can use the enclosed
zip file.
This example only works for a NAD amplifier (C352). But if you know the
IR codes of your own amplifier you can easily change the applets for
your amplifier.
In the previous verson of the applet it was not possible to control the
volume with the normal buttons of the controller, this option is now
added.

The enclosed zip file contains the following:
1. A map NADIR
2. The file Volume.lua

The applet under NADIR gives a extra menu in your controller to control
your amp with IR codes for power on/off, volume up/down and input
select. It is easy to add other functions but i did not needed that.

The file Volume.lua changes the function of the volume buttons on your
controller to also send IR codes to the amp if you use the normal
volume buttons on your controller.
It is best to fix the output in SqueezeCenter Setting to 100%
(otherwise the volume applet gives a combination of IR control and
digital volume control).

Installation
1. Unpack the RemoteAmp.zip file.
3. Copy the map NADIR to your controller (usr/share/jive/applets).
4. Copy the file Volume.lua to your controller
(usr/share/jive/applets/Slimbrowser) WARNING: THIS MAP ALREADY CONTAINS
A FILE Volume.lua. BACKUP THIS FILE BEFORE COPYING.

To copy the files to your controller enable external acces on your
remote (SSH) and copy with for instance winscp.
The remote functions are now available under the home menu on your
controller.

Thanks to TimT for modifying the png file and nogauss (
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=394351#post394351 ) for
the idea for volumecontrol.

If it comes with the US plate that's good.

"Requires worldwide power plate kit (not included)"

Is what lead me to believe the power plate was not included.

I never claimed "shortly".
Which plugins are you after?

I do have Jive menus running so anything that uses them will work (e.g.
CustomBrowse, TrackStat, RandomMix, CDPlayer etc.). Plugins on
NowPlaying will not yet work since NowPlaying will require a full
overhaul (and yes: I WILL change the graphics then, and no, I will NOT
introduce 3D effects). Also, plugins that don't support Jive menus
(that is: don't work with SBC) will not work then, as will anything
requiring LUA. The latter will stay that way, the former will change
since I plan to introduce the iPeng skin's plugin scheme in a later
version to allow for SOME active content (through JavaScript).
Can't do the LUA part because that violates Apple's license agreement
and for that part I know they enforce it. Unfortunately some of my
favorite plugins (like Biography and Lyrics) currently require LUA
hence the decision to introduce the iPeng plugin scheme as well.

The 1.1 version right now is very close to beta state, I will send out
first samples (not yet full beta) as early as today. First beta release
will probably follow this week.

HOWEVER: Even though 1.1 still looks pretty similar to 1.0.5 so far,
the whole backend got changed and this required more extensive changes
than originally thought, especially moving to notification updates
(instead of polling), a change originally scheduled for 1.2.
So I assume this will require extensive testing, I don't want to run
into a situation like with 1.0.3 again where I released a version that
turned out to be more buggy than it's predecessor. Testing takes time
and it depends on the outcome how soon 1.1 gets released.

Enough of a hint?

Ah, I use Windows XP BUT i usally use Remote Desktop to control my
computer. Maybe this is the issue?

But if i control my squeezecenter remotly from another computer on the
web-interface and there save a playlist, but it is the same error
there.

No change.

The thing i could try is to restart my computer, log-on true local on
the computer and therafter try to create a playlist and save it..

I will try this later today. I come back later with the results.

Thanks!!

Please see my previous post.

No. You'll need to apply the patch manually. At the top level of the
squeezeslave directory; (ie. where the makefiles are) run this
command.

patch -p0 -i squeezeslave-0.8-r25-26.patch

you can try the daemonize patch as well. I don't know if they can both
be applied. Unfortunately, I need to refactor the daemonize patch to
allow the win32 version of squeezeslave to compile, which is why I
didn't include it in r26 release. I'm actually in the process of
cleaning up squeezeslave.c as it's become hard to maintain with all the
resent feature enhancements, which is great!

Which version of Squeezecenter are you running?

I released 0.8-26 to help debug another issue. -O has worked for a
long time, no need for 0.8-26 for this problem.

I suspect something else is happening with pause as --oldplayer only
changes the player type advertised to SC from squeezeslave to
softsqueeze.

Try adding -O -m00:00:00:00:00:02 when starting squeezeslave, this will
create a new softsqueeze player with default settings.

Unfortunately this is a common practice among many online retailers.
One of the tricks to getting you to their site and order from them is
to post very low prices for the searched item, but then insist you
"contact them" to confirm your order.

When you do call them they try to sell you *extras* like extended
warranties and will even try to sell you accessories that should be
included with the original item. When you don't buy enough "extras"
then all of a sudden they no longer have the original item in stock.
:)

Squeezeslave has supported replay gain since at least 0.7.5 if not
before. Unfortunately the squeezeslave player type in squeezecenter
disables replayGainMode by default.

If your running SC on linux you can change the line in
server/Slim/Player/SqueezeSlave.pm from

'replayGainMode' => 0,

to

'replayGainMode' => 1,

and restart SC.

I guess I should submit a bug for it.

FYI: I got my »full refund« today (no interest, of course) — after 70
days.

Seems there are many »teaser offers« out there, no real merchandise.

I should have been warned, since the article appeared almost € 30
cheaper when »found« via price searching engines like billiger.de,
guenstiger.de, ciao.de and the like. When ordering via phone (and

In my opinion, it somehow invalidates the reliability of the price

items appear »cheaper« than the competitor’s pricing.

Oh, well. Live and learn :-)

Hi Richard

There are two versions. The one that comes with Transporter has
backlights and the one shipping with SB3 does not have them but is
identical except for the missing white LEDs and probably the
light-pipe.

I do not know if both versions are available as spare parts though.

Having really struggled since buying a duet six months ago, and still
not having a setup I'm that happy with...(I'm still using the main PC
as a SC server despite having toyed with a thin cliet and external usb
drive, and now building an atom based server).

I really think the SC server should reside within the SR box (OK this
would require a processor and enough memory for the data base).

That way a user could:
1. Plug in a USB drive, wireless/wired Net and get going(or no
network at all!)
2. Store the music files on a PC/NAS and link via samba, thus not
having to go through all the drama of installing SC on the said PC/NAS
(just store the files).
To me that would be a winner.

No, you don't. I did. The installer needs to tell the service to automatically

(using my best Jack Benny immitation) Ya knw,... For some
reason 30 day trials..or any number of day trials, rub me the wrong
way. It might sound rediculous...wait, it even sound rediculous to me,
but I don't think it's fair for the companies who offer these trials to
sell the merchandise as new after they send it out for trial. I know
some companies have open box sales, but just as often they simply box
it back up and send it out, especially when there is minimal profit
involved and it's an expensive item. I just don't feel like I'm being
fair to Logitech or anyone else.

I'm what they call an advanced amateur photographer and with the onset
of the digital age, DSLR cameras have become quite expensive. Most
reputable dealers offer a liberal return period on these cams and it
seems just as often you hear about someone who purchases a camera from
these dealers that has hundreds of activations on it. Personally I
don't feel it's fair to pay the exact same amount of money for a
slightly used camera as it is for a brand new one. Feeling that way is
why I am opposed (for myself) to trial periods on devices. Another part
of the issue for myself is that I have no doubt the Transporter will
work as advertised, but the part I care about is one of personal taste
and it doesn't sit well with me to use a piece of equipment and return
it based on my personal tastes.

I know all of this seems silly and I think there are ways around it. I
would love to find one locally to listen to (not likely) or if companies
would make trial models available. The automobile business does it.
You have demo models that are used for test drives and then sold at a
reduced price because the dealer has depreciated the vehicle. Same
thing for local sound shops. When I purchased my equipment years ago I
took home floor models to try over night. As long as I didn't damage
them I didn't have to pay for anything and the shop would sell them as
floor models at the end of the year.

Anyway, like I said, it's just a personal quirk of mine and I'm willing
to wait for the opportunity to hear one local to myself.

Nuts, huh?

Howard
