Wish I could log a bug report at Apple.

Re: [slim] Internet Radio

2009-02-24 Thread bpa

Did you install mplayer ?

AlienBBC should not have affected SB3 players unless you are trying to
play a RealAudio stream. You should have been able to play the Kera
WMA stream on your SB3 without AlienBBC so there may be some other
issue in you system setup. Confusingly Kera labels the RealAudio stream
as a MP3 stream so that may have been the original problem.

For some users, Softsqueeze is a bit unreliable and I believe sometimes
play needs to be pressed twice or play/pause/play.

Do you have SyncOptions configured for default mid-track sync? Most
folks with SqueezeCenter 7.3 and later prefer default mid-track
 syncing.

I don't see such an option. It says Wait behavior. When syncing
with a player that is playing a local song, whether to sync and restart
the song (Default), wait for the next track to start, or attempt to
sync mid-song. Wait for next track will allow you to press a button
on the remote control to force immediate sync or attempt mid-song sync

So the default is to sync and restart. I switched it to attempt to
sync mid-song. What actually happened was that the players synched and
the playlist *stopped*. So I don't know if there's a conflict between
The Synchronizer and Sync Options plugins, or between one or both of
those and the latest version of SqueezeCenter or what. I guess I will
experiment some more; I do love the Synchronizer, it is really
providing what I was looking for (getting Sync more accessible in the
menus) and also being able to define the groups is very handy, as we
have Upstairs, Downstairs and Bedroom (or BedBoom as I named it, nyuk
nyuk), and our likely sync combos are to sync all three or to just sync
the upstairs and the bedroom.

I appreciate the discussion here; does anyone else have any thoughts?

Re: [slim] Internet Radio

2009-02-24 Thread eschurig

Yes, I installed softsqueeze version 1:1.0-relsvn20070225-0.3etch1.
With a version number like that, how could it not work! I can't
explain why kera started working on my SB3 after the installation. I
tried it several times before and it failed. Originally it did work
fine but only over Squeeze Network. When it was failing on the SB3, it
seemed to have trouble transitioning from the station introduction to
actually playing the stream. Now I notice that there is no station
introduction that gets played, it just goes right to the main stream.
Could the AlienBBC intstallation help with this somehow?

I played around with the full list of local internet radio stations
last night. All of the ones that worked were mp3 or a .m3u file. The
troublesome stations were all listed as wma. The server seems to think
it has connected with the station. Even softsqueeze seems somewhat
fooled because there is no longer an error message and the timer is
incrementing as if something is playing. Out of many tries and a
number of stations, I did get one station to play that was listed as a
wma. When I tried the same station later it wouldn't work again. This
morning I can't get KERA to play through softsqueeze and it worked fine
last night. All still works on my SB3.

I've never had trouble with softsqueeze before but I really only used
it for playing from my local music library. I wonder if it is a timing
issue and maybe my old machine is a little to slow. The cpu
utilization looks fine but memory is tight. I'm still hoping there is
a software issue that can be resolved. Does the extension plugin or
AlienBBC have any version requirements for linux packages?

Softsqueeze works so well with my local libraries. Upgrading to
Squeezecenter 7.3.2 motivated me to learn some new tricks with this
toy. I connected with my University radio station this week that I
haven't heard in 25 years. The internet radio stuff is fun and it
would be nice if softsqueeze could play it too. Thanks for any help
you can give.

Yes, if it is a programmable remote see if it has JVC-DVD IR codes. If

I use a Yamaha AVR remote for SB3 use and it works beautifully! :)

It's a good question: I don't want to remove it unless you have the choice

that many of the developers aren't happy with the current sync UI, so I
expect there are more changes coming our way. But I'd be surprised if
they looked exactly like anything we've seen before.

You're absolutely correct. Truth is, neither way is really a big-deal
issue; it's not as if I switch multiple players in and out of sync
groups twenty times a day. I've almost always agreed with your position
on nearly everything you post, and I've also gleaned a number of helpful
nuggets of information out of the things you've said, and on this
particular issue we just happen to differ in opinion. And Emerson would
merely shake his head at both of us. In the big Slim scheme, it's a very
 minor point.

Wouldn't it be a good idea if you could define sync-presets with the SC
web interface (or any other interface) and then choose them by name with
the controller or ir-remote?

I suppose the number of useful sync-combinations would be limited in
most households (no, no, not all, don't bother point that out). This
could be added to the existing sync-interface.

New-and-improved is not compatible with just-like-before. To make
things better, they have to be made different. The pre-7.3 sync menu
for the Controller worked well and was simple, quick, and elegant; an
entire sync group could be set up from one screen with minimal

headache, and yes, it is foolish. Ralph would be appalled.

You shouldn't even have to recognize which remote is in your hands.

That would be the case if my preset-model was adopted ;)

[slim] Running SC on $100 Linux Wall Wart

Sizing masters: I wonder if it's up to the task with regards to

512MB RAM
512MB flash

This plus the external (large) USB hard drive of my choice and I may be
able to finally get rid of the noisy 90's laptop I'm currently using.
[initial opinion: Looks well cheaper than the average expensive NAS

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2009-02-24 Thread Nonreality

I first came up with the Nonreality name back in 95 or 96 when I was
part of a 3d world called Alphworld. It was a place that you had
avatars and could build homes and chat with people from all over the
world. I had started with a different name but thought that Nonreality
was a perfect name for a person in a made up world on the internet. Now
Alphaworld has become Activeworlds last I knew. It was a lot of fun for
about 4 years but then the money making machine came along and it became
less fun. As far as my avatar here, it was just a picture that I came
upon in the nonreality of the internet and liked it. I'm not quite as
old as it, but it seems to fit me well. If you see other Nonreality's
out there it is usually me. I'm always amazed that 90% of the time it
is still available for me. It's hard to find a screen name that you
can still get after 13 years.

PS Nice thread by my friend Goodsounds. Lots of interesting posts came
from it.

Re: [slim] Anther budget DAC

2009-02-24 Thread chrol

Hi,

The components are probably not comparable to a transporter (which I
sadly don't own...)

I do know that I think it performs admirably.

I have it connected via a long USB to my computer - mainly for watching
dvd's etc via computer. I was able to lower the volume a considerable
amount after upgrading from my previous built in soundcard and still
hear (and understand) speech in movies...

When I first got the unit I started working and listening to music in
the early evening (e.g. the brandenburg concertos in flac). My
girlfriend awoke me from my trance at 5 in the morning wondering why I
hadn't come to bed.

It is a bit big and bulky - and i don't think that the amplifier will
drive every headphone.

rgds,
Christian

Mine's a writer too but it's the real name of an English Edwardian

I think the Synchronizer plugin already does something like this.

No clue. :(

You might try an HK forum on the web for your model. Someone out there
might just have the list. Did you try the HK user manual? I know my
Yamaha AVR had all the codes by type and mfr near the back of the
manual.

Worse case, if your remote is a learning remote as well (most
programmable remotes do both), there are only so many SB3 remote
buttons to program. Might take you less time to program each button
(like 20 minutes) than researching for remote IR codes. :)

lauret;400379 Wrote:
But why are 44.1kHz/16-bit FLACs transcoded? Why aren't they streamed
 unprocessed to the SB?

Testing on my SB3 with a 44.1khz/16-bit ripped to FLAC CD track, 'More
Info' is not showing it as being transcoded. If, however, I play the
same track on SoftSqueeze where I have created a custom-convert.conf
transcoding FLAC to FLAC to 44.1khz/16-bit via sox, it does show as
being transcoded. This is what I would expect.

If you still have 'D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d -2}' in your 'flc flc transcode *'
section of convert.conf, I still don't see a reason why that section
would be chosen over the standard 'flc flc * *' if the file being
streamed is 44.1khz/16-bit. However, if you have modified the 'flc flc
* *' section to include sox, that would explain it.

Incidentally, it was your '[sox] -q -t wav - -t flac -C 0 *-b 16*
dither $RESAMPLE$ - ' that gave me the idea of how to stream files
greater than 44.1k and/or greater than 16-bit to SoftSqueeze so thanks.
