[slim] Home Server - Dilemma - Any recommendations?

2009-02-27 Thread socistep

Hi All,

Made a decision to purchase a barebones tranquilPC mainly to act as a
server for streaming music, file sharing etc., was going to add 1Tb
HDD/RAM and run Linux on this...

http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/acatalog/T7-330_Barebones.html

I preferred this over a NAS and although would be headless would have
future option to use as another PC.

I went to order on the website but chanced upon this software

http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/acatalog/MUSIC_SOFTWARE_DRIVES.html

I can see a lot of benefits of this and would make the re-ripping of my
library to FLAC ongoing music management a lot quicker and easier,
however it will only run on Windows Home Server.

Not sure on what to do, does anyone know of similar software on Linux
that provides a more automated solution or would I have to go for a WHS
type solution ?

All comments welcome !

thanks
Ian

[slim] OT: Recommend a digital camera?

2009-02-27 Thread Kyle

I have had a Panasonic Lumix camera for about three years and I would
like to get a new one for my wife. My complaints about this camera are
the long reset times and the delay between tripping the shutter and the
shot actually being taken. Both are extremely annoying. I hope there
are better options available today. I'm looking in the sub-$200 range
(5-6 megapixels is fine) and don't want much more than point and shoot
as this is for my wife who wants ease of use. Thanks for any
suggestions.

Re: [slim] OT: Recommend a digital camera?

2009-02-27 Thread Dogberry2

I highly recommend the Canon Powershot SD line. I've had one for years,
and it's been great. My wife got the 'SD1100IS'
model last year, and it also takes fantastic pictures. I've recommended
them to friends, and everyone who has bought one loves it. It's
shirtpocket small, but has great optics and firmware; the pictures are
generally outstanding. I've had photography snobs see my pictures and
be wowed, then try to start a conversation about what kind of fancy
gear I used. When I tell 'em it was just a little pocket
point-and-shoot camera they look startled and change the subject.
Battery life is very good (obviously longer if you're not using the
flash), but get a spare battery anyway, so you can keep using the
camera while one battery is in the charger. And of course, get a big SD
card or two (8 GB cards have come way down in price, and hold a ton of
photos). Oh, and get one that has an actual viewfinder window, in
addition to the LCD screen. You might not use it often, but there are
times when it comes in handy.

[slim] Intel Atom: Suitable for transcoding?

2009-02-27 Thread DarkWeaver

Hey guys,

Thought I'd make my first post here, as I'm contemplating making my own
little server for SC and video streaming to my Xbox.
Basically, I've just sent back a Buffalo Linkstation because it was too
slow; I use iTunes so a fair few of my music files are in AAC format, so
they needed to be transcoded before being sent to my SLiMP3. I'm hoping
someone has some experience with the Atom, and knows how suitable it
would be for transcoding, as that's obviously important for me.

I'll be running Ubuntu Server, and will be pairing the Atom with 2GB of
RAM and a 1TB HDD.

Any ideas?

have to change what comes up automatically from CDDB. This is
especially true for Classical music, where any sensible person would
want the composer in the Artist bit, so it may be best to rip on your
desktop machine anyway, just so you can check before it does it,
otherwise it's a lot of arduous tag editing later.

Yeah, as Andy said, I've heard Apple is a little different to most.

Belkin is a better example. A Belkin rep probably comes in to manage
that stores stok and look after the display, they probably also look
after all the cables and accessories too.

If you have a search for some of the Monster Cable threads, you will
see a lot of discussion on how they market their products to stores.

It looks like VortexBox will do everything that AVA Media does.
VortexBox rips CDs to FLAC and MP3 automatically and downloads the
cover art. VortexBox is free instead of the £39 that AVA Media costs.
And you don't have to spend $100 on Windows Home Server.

You can also use VortexBox as a generic NAS box and a back end for
other players like XBMC and iTunes. Hope this helps.

I load VortexBox into Vmware all the time for testing and it works very
well. What Guest Operating system did you select for the VM? You need
to use Other Linux 2.6.x kernel for it to work. You will need to use
the 30GB option. That way VortexBox will install on just one
partition. The default install creates a separate partition for the
music files and this does not work well in small disk sizes.

If anybody is interested I could create a pre-built VM for download.

Since the new forum software got installed, more often than not, I get
 this message:

I'll try to understand next time I see one of your messages waiting for
approval (but as I'm not using the forum software, this is rarely the
case). From my experience how antispam software is working I could imagine
two things specific to your postings:

- your use of special characters (which show up utterly broken in my
mails, bugzilla etc.)

- your signature: maybe just showing the link instead of linking some
words might help?

But that's a wild guess.

I load VortexBox into Vmware all the time for testing and it works very
well. What Guest Operating system did you select for the VM? You need
to use Other Linux 2.6.x kernel for it to work.

Will try that. I was using Redhat.

Re: [slim] Why do posts suddenly require moderator approval?

2009-02-27 Thread epoch1970

I thought moving to moderated mode was a deliberate (yet quiet) move.
Yesterday I posted a message with .zip attachment and was moderated
(the message was displayed for a very, very short time.)
I thought something was fishy so I edited the previous message which
was mine too, added the attachment, no moderation this time. I
continued posting, no moderation anymore.

From time to time, I also see form buttons changing names, these days.
For example instead of Save when correcting/updating a message, I've
already seen Vote now (submitting worked ok.)

For what its worth, Safari is my main browser.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-02-27 Thread Random Lurker

I finally took the plunge, and picked up an Ipod Touch to use as a
controller with iPeng to run a new Squeezebox receiver. The short
version is.I love it!

The longer version - Some comments/questions:
1) Performance is generally very good, especially considering I have a
library of almost 8000 mostly FLAC albums. The one area that was slow
is the screen I intended to be my standard view - The Artists-All
Albums list. I prefer this list order for browsingjust like you
would see them in a record store. When I first selected this item, all
you see is a blank screen. (I assume is is getting/sorting the list).
It takes a VERY long time for anything to display. When it does, it is
very responsive. I have seen vague comments that this timing will
improve... is this true? If I left the list and returned, it still
took a long time to load.

2) Blank screens - on the above mentioned view and on search, when
something is actually happening but all you see is a blank screen, it
is hard to tell if the device is actually doing anything. Some sort of
progress indicator would help immensely.

3) Custom Browse - I have seen some comments about CustomBrowse with
iPeng - but I assume they were talking about the plug-in, right? And
these are planned to be supported in 1.1? Do I have that right?

4) Pre-fetch - I appreciate that you have set it up so that it does not
lag while loading artwork.but is there anyway to add an option to
pre-fetch all artwork? I would like to have all the art in place when
flipping thru the LONG list of albums, and would be willing to set
aside the iPod and wait while it grabbed all of this data, rather than
populating it as it was browsed.

5) Search navigation - The one place I got confused in the UI was while
using the search screen. When the keyboard is up, I wasn't sure how to
escape. I didn't intuitvly realize that I needed to make the
keyboard disappear to open up my navigation options. Maybe it's just
me, but it was a little confusing.

6) Pauses in tracks - When I performed a search, it caused to audio
playback to stop. It also took a very long time to return a result.
With no progress indicator, no results shown for a long time, and an
audio dropout, I had assumed the app had crashed. Ids the search time
due to the size of the library? Or is something else happening here?

Thanks again for all your hard work - these comments are not meant as
criticism.just trying to help move iPeng from very good to
excellent.

Pat, I actually ordered the SD1100 from newegg today. It was packaged

Good to hear that.

The longer version - Some comments/questions:

always welcome! Seriously!

1)... The Artists-All Albums list. I prefer this list order for
browsingjust like you would see them in a record store. When I
first selected this item, all you see is a blank screen. (I assume is

comments that this timing will improve... is this true? If I left the
list and returned, it still took a long time to load.

You guess right, it's the sorting.
I really want to improve this on 1.1 - all other lists do already live
without sorting, this one will need some special consideration.
If you want to make sure I don't forget it, please file a ticket :-)
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/newticket

 2) Blank screens - on the above mentioned view and on search, when
something is actually happening but all you see is a blank screen, it
is hard to tell if the device is actually doing anything. Some sort of
 progress indicator would help immensely.

Err.. Yes. For this screen, I plan on one, Search will be a bit more
difficult, I'll see...

 3) Custom Browse - I have seen some comments about CustomBrowse with
iPeng - but I assume they were talking about the plug-in, right? And
these are planned to be supported in 1.1? Do I have that right?

Yes, that's currently beta testing. Quite cool.

Short answer: mostly no.
The problem is two-fold.
#1: Getting the artwork onto the device. I could indeed add a prefetch
for this (another ticket?). But this will only get you half of what you
want since...
#2 Displaying the artwork while scrolling requires the images to be
created in memory (RAM) since scrolling consumes almost all of iPhone's
computing power and there is simply no way I can cram 8,000 images (plus
all the radio artwork) into memory, it would alone consume more than I
believe is typically available.
There's another thing, however that I would like to do (ticket #3?): Do
a more intelligent read-ahead that gives a chance to get artwork into
memory you are likely to need next. Will probably give you the desired
effect.

Yes, but I didn't find a way to place the keyboard above the buttons.
Apple Remote does it the same way.

 6) Pauses in tracks - When I performed a search, it caused to audio
playback to stop. It also took a very long time to return a result.
With no progress indicator, no results shown for a long time, and an
audio dropout, I had assumed the app had crashed. Is the search time
due to the size of the library? Or is something else happening here?

Maybe. And maybe your server is a bit slow.
And - agreed - iPeng is quit demanding here, since it starts an
incremental search with one character only.
Actually it's a bad design on SC's side since iPeng only fetches 8
elements per category and those should really be available fast, but
obviously SC does a full query first.
I consider doing it the same way as the controller and require two or
three characters before starting search.

There are a few things you can do in some instances to make your camera
trip the shutter faster. The camera is spending time trying to
calculate, shutter speed, focus, etc.. If you can set the exposure
manually, you shorten the time the camera takes to do that. In some
cases the exposure doesn't change from shot to shot so you can set it
and forget it. Next, if the camera has a manual focus mode and it is
easy enough use, then you can use that in cases where you know the
focus point. Say you're shooting your kids baseball game. The play is
going to be at second base. Manually focus on second and wait for the
action to happen there. If you set the focus and exposure ahead of
time, the camera will trip very quickly. It takes a bit of thinking
for a while, but there are lotsof cases where you can preset focus and
exposure and then catch the action. Your other option is to spend
$800+ on a camera body. The more you spend the less the lag time.

through my investigations and using URL Snooper.

I'm not local to that area, so RadioTime's local plugin won't work for

Re: [slim] Bass and Treble Reset

2009-02-27 Thread JasonJoel

Mine used to do that, too... Every time I turned it on. supoer, duper
annoying.

However, the last few times I used it, it seemed to behave properly. I
assumed it was 7.3.2 that fixed it, as that was about the time I
remember it working.

I'll test it again tomorrow and let you know. It literally used to do
it every time, so if it doesn'y do it then something changed in 7.3.2.

[slim] [ANN] Squeemote 1.2, now with device sync!

2009-02-27 Thread Luke Redpath

Thanks to a quick turnaround from Apple this week (only three days), I'm
happy to announce that Squeemote 1.2 is now available. The biggest
feature in this release is the new quick device selector and device
sync functionality. There is also some added extras such as browse by
genre and other UI tweaks, various bug fixes and performance
improvements.

Here's a complete changelog:

 * NEW: Device synching controls
 * NEW: Device power on/off toggle
 * NEW: Improved pop-up device selection screen
 * IMPROVED: Tweaked the current playlist UI and how it appears
 * NEW: Browse library by genre
 * NEW: Device mute control
 * NEW: Library browser tab order can be reordered
 * IMPROVED: Better data caching mechanism. Data is now initially
cached on first load, and future cache updates are automatically
downloaded in the background if a server rescan has taken place since
the cache was last updated. Manual resyncs are no longer necessary
 * IMPROVED: Artists list is cached for improved performance
 * IMPROVED: Support for servers with authentication enabled when
auto-detecting server, with a simple authentication dialog (no manual
 settings required other than username/password)
 * FIXED: bug where Squeemote would stop receiving updates after being
locked for a period of time
 * FIXED: no longer makes more requests to the server than necessary to
maintain state which should lead to better performance.
 * FIXED: playback timer would sometimes reset unexpectedly and become
 out of sync

I've also pushed out a few changes to the 'Squeemote website'
(http://lukeredpath.co.uk/squeemote). Enjoy the new release and if
you've been holding off of trying out Squeemote because of its lack of
device sync capabilities, I ask you to give it a try. Work on 1.3 has
already begun in earnest.
