Great find Phil, looks very promising. These guys are seriously on the
ball, makes Napster look like ancient dinosaurs especailly the way they
dealt with the recent unpopular UK "upgrade" (you just have to look in
the Napster forums to have this confirmed).

[slim] Does this type of playlist exist?

2009-04-07 Thread elziko

I'd like to make a playlist where I define a start and end time for each
MP3 I want to play.

So essentially it will be a playlist of MP3s but each item in the
playlist would be only part of the MP3.

Initially it looked like I could to the with a cue sheet but it seems
to be able to define a start time but not an end time.

Is what I'm trying to do possible without cutting the MP3s up myself?

Thanks!

Max is a nice ripper, but XLD is a bit better (imho) :
- supports AccurateRip
- can embed cover art in files
- better album identification and cover art retrieval

[slim] No more sound on my Slimp3

2009-04-07 Thread touficjohn

Hi,

I've been reading these forums ever since I got my Slimp3 second hand
(student budget bla bla) from eBay a few months ago.

Since then my Slimp3's been working fine, no problems at all, until the
day I decided to re-organise my network/power cables.

At the time the Slimp3 was playing and I moved the power cable and the
music started to stutter, it was all downhill from here.
I tried everything I could think of to get the music back until
eventually no sound at all. So now I have a Slimp3 that functions
perfectly using the remote and the webinterface but that has no sound.

I've tried three different power supplies.
I've re-flashed the firmware.
I've reset it to factory settings.
I've lowered the bitrate in SC.
I've opened it up to see if anyone was wrong, on first glance I
could'nt tell.

I think what's happened is that the initial power supply it came with
from ebay was no good. Now that I've sourced the correct one its still
not working.

The only time it ever makes noise is when the amp is on and you plug in
the power and makes a small 2 second sound like its being switched on -
thats it.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

With newer players (SB2 and up), SC can send the start request to the
player ahead of time. That is, it tells the player to start at X, where
X is some time in the future (default 100ms). For an SB1 it does not
have this option, and SC sets a high-priority timer to send the start
command at the relevant time, allowing for normal network latency. This
mechanism is inevitably a bit hit-and-miss because SC is single-threaded
and other activities can delay the firing of a timer.

>From the log, I see two things:

- The start command (strm-u) to the SBR only gets acknowledged after
  448ms.
- The start command to the SB1 gets sent after the SB2 has already
  started.

Please check that you have undone all the changes on the Settings /
Player / / Synchronization page for each player.

It could also be that SC is just busy at the start of a track. Do you
have any plugins installed? Were you using random-play?

I guess that this could be a problem with network saturation at the
beginning of tracks. You could try increasing the 'Synchronization
Start Delay' parameter (not sure of the exact name) under Settings /
Network (or is that Settings / Advanced / Network?).

Re: [slim] Does this type of playlist exist?

2009-04-07 Thread funkstar

A cue sheet would be the way to do this, if there are other playlists
that allow you to do what you want, I don't think they are supported in
SC.

The limitation is that you can't skip part of the source file, all of
it has to be defines as tracks, you would just have to skip the tracks
that contain portions of the MP3 that you don't want.

Actually, thinking about it, you could have a cue sheet which creates
the tracks from the long source MP3, then have a playlist that onlye
includes the defined track you want. Cue sheet in the same folder as
the MP3 and playlist (m3u or something) in your playlist folder. That
*should* work.

Ah yes, a playlist of cue files... I can see that working as I need
although it's not very elegant.

Worse still, I'm actually more interested in playing this on my
handheld (using Conduits Pocket Player) rather than SC but i have just
realised that it doesn't support .cue files. Looks like I really am
going to have edit my MP3s together in Adobe Audition or something.

Thanks for the help though!

Not sure I understand why you would say this, other than having to wait
for a "signal" to appear on the Itouch/Peng

Once you have a signal, the Peng is very responsive and a lot better as

He said that because this is a very old thread. His comment was from
September '08, before the iPeng Application was out and was referring
to the web-based plugin. That one is indeed slower than the controller.

That's what he meant with "that will change with the native version..."
The native version is the app.

Quite. With the native iPeng app is better than my Controller in almost
every way, the exceptions mainly being:

- availability of hardware buttons for track navigation and volume
- speed of notification on track changes etc (due to be fixed in iPeng
I believe)
- player functionality (hopefully to be addressed in iPeng at some
point)

The only real problem with the iPeng web based plugin was speed and the
native version fully addresses that issue*.

If I was in the market for a Squeezebox remote solution now I'd be
buying an iPod Touch and iPeng rather than a Squeezebox Controller. As
it is though I have the best of both worlds, with both a Controller and
an iPhone/iPeng.

* I took a Squeezebox Boom away with me over the weekend and plugged it
into the wifi network where we were staying. Not only did it happily
stream music from my home server several hundred miles away, but I also
used my iPhone+iPeng to control it, with iPeng also talking to the very
distant server. It worked perfectly and was still acceptably
responsive.

I was copying it into flash, there is enough room. We have

OK, I only did this the SB1, but I checked the settings on the others
and they appear to be OK

I have about a dozen plugins, MusicIP and a fairly large library (~120K
tracks) so that could be the issue. However I do have Core Duo 2.5Ghz
with 2 GB of RAM so that should help, however I did notice another
problem (occasional sound drop out) coincided with my using the cover
finder plugin so it could be Squeezecenter getting overwhelmed.

> I guess that this could be a problem with network saturation at the

I tried this and it was a little better, but there were still delays.
How big can I make this buffer?

What I'm unclear of is why the SB1 is starting late? I understand the
other devices can push themselves up in the queue, but it is on a wired
connection opposite the other players which are all wireless. The
latency is less than half a millisecond with constant bandwidth. Is it
the small buffer that makes it so vulnerable to the server being
overwhelmed?

Thanks again for your help.

Re: [slim] Verizon FIOS remote to control squeezebox

2009-04-07 Thread MrSinatra

i have no exp with any of that and am impressed by what you've done...

however, i know with my cable box remote (comcast) it has "passthru"
buttons where a certain button or set of buttons will ALWAYS control
one device regardless of which device u tell it to control otherwise.

check the remote documentation, verizon should have given you some kind
of instruction book.
