Re: [slim] Home networking - suitable faceplate

2009-05-07 Thread NFLnut

I'm a little late piling in here .. you might have already done your
project. I too, am about to pull some wires through existing walls and
under an upstairs floor (cutting into drywall and pulling up floorboards
to put [2] 1-1/2" PVC pipes for cable conduit so I can pull more cable
if needed in the future).

I have also been looking for faceplates. What I found was
http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/4075856/vpcsid/0/SFV/30046
. Now I am trying to figure out what PVC fittings to use. I decided to
use standard CPVC instead of the Carlon grey PVC that is traditionally
used for electric conduit. This is because there are far more fittings
for standard (irrigation) PVC. And since these conduits will be solely
used for pulling low voltage (speaker wires, Cat6, audio interconnects,
HDMI cables, and mini-coax such as Belden 1522, ..) I figure it will be
okay. I will use one conduit for audio and the other for Cat6 and
video.

But just this week I also became aware of this:
http://homepathproducts.com/products/index.php Probably costs more than
I'm willing to spend, but looks very interesting.

This gets my vote as well. I have an SBR in our billiards room, but am
about to replace it with the mothballed SB3 I used to have there. If
Logitech came out with a device with larger display, I'd upgrade
immediately (then I'd have two mothballed devices!).

Correct in every particular. It is really hard for the wireless
connection to be used since the connection needs to be configured
(especially as regards encryption) before the SBR can be reached
wirelessly. This is classic bootstrap problem.

margolbe;421526 Wrote:

The only safe way is to have only one network connection active. Linux
users may be able to get a clue from the network device names, like
eth0, eth1 etc. I would take the safe approach, i.e., make sure to have
only one network adapter enabled and have that connected to your wired
router port. In Windows, you could use the device manager to disable the
other adapters for the duration of the configuration. If you have both
wired and wireless adapters, disable the wireless one and you should be
good to go.

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2009-05-07 Thread margolbe

Hi,

I am thinking about buying just the receiver and want to use Net:UDAP
to configure.

I am unclear about the following:

# The computer running Net::UDAP and your SBR must be connected to the
same wired network, and must be on the same subnet.

I'm not sure I understand. I plan on using this wirelessly. But, in
order to configure I must first hook up the receiver to the ethernet
connection on my router? Once its configured, I then move my receiver
back to my audio system? Is this correct?

# This network must be connected to the first network interface on the
computer, in order for SBR discovery to work. If your SBR is on a
network interface other than the first you must either move it, or
configure down any preceding network interfaces, until it is so
assigned. Otherwise the discover command will not find your SBR [this is
tracked in Ticket #6; now fixed in the trunk].

How do you identify the first network?

Thanks,

Bruce

OK, you could probably use SqueezeSlave but that's limited to 44.1/16

What about SoftSqueeze (comes with SC)?

Re: [slim] Easy, stable SC client for Mac?

2009-05-07 Thread tfish77

Thanks for replying, Ben. The issue there is that the web interface
launches SoftSqueeze, which is a little too confusing for her - I don't
mean to say that she's dumb, far from it, but it's more that unless
you're already pretty familiar with how the hardware SB works (which she
isn't - I am definitely the primary user), the software version is not
very intuitive.

I guess "intuitive" is a key word here.

Thanks!

That would depend on your use. If you want an SB3 on your bedside
table then yeah, that's a lot of wasted space. My SB3 is "floating" as
it were in my AV rack, not even taking up rack shelf space. Simple
heavy gage wire "mounted" on the back of the AV rack acting as an "arm"
holding up the SB3. All wires (ethernet, optical, power, support wire)
are completely hidden inside a black "sleeve" which shows as the arm.

Can't do that with a 19" box. :)

My point was, far better functionality, far more supported codecs and
services, in a small enough box that doesn't even require shelf space.

You do, indeed, get what you pay for. :)

As soon as I have ccompleted radio streams.

Can I put you on my list of preferred test-candidates for upcoming

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2009-05-07 Thread nowork

Hi,

I'm having trouble listening to NPR Radio at 32kbps CBR with
SqueezeSlave. The sound output is like "chimpunks." (Higher bitrate
music plays fine).

I don't want to cross post
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63052) but I am trying
to figure out if SqueezeSlave has near-term potential to be updated to
play 32kbps CBR streams?

The rationale - more and more cheap, energy efficient boxes will be
running linux squeezecenter headless installations. Local playback
would be nice, as the onboard audio chip is usually included free on the
motherboard.

SqueezeSlave seems the non-GUI way to go (instead of SoftSqueeze), but
SqueezeSlave currently does not get along nicely with NPR. I don't have
the talent/skills to fix SqueezeSlave.

Any other people willing to take on the task to give SqueezeSlave the
smarts to deal with NPR at 32kbps CBR?

Thanks.

[slim] Easy, stable SC client for Mac?

2009-05-07 Thread tfish77

My wife recently got a Macbook and I'm trying to help her access my SC
music library. On her old Windows laptop, I had Moose set up with
SqueezeSlave, which worked great. I've tried installing SqueezePlay on
her Mac, but I don't think it's quite ready for prime-time. I'm looking
for something that's as easy to use as Moose is for Windows - she's
pretty computer-savvy, but has a very low tolerance for things that
"aren't as easy to use as iTunes" in her words.

My own hatred of iTunes aside, can anyone recommend a good solution?
Thank you!

Yes. Thanks. I did more research and saw that the Boom requires an
external system with 256MB RAM, ethernet or wireless network, and 100MB
hard disk space (for SC).

But I read about an "optimized" SqueezeCenter on the forum that can run
on the Linux Wall Wart(s), without fans, etc. If it could be optimized
to have a one-box player with SC that can get files from USB, Firewire
or wireless, that would be great. I realize price-point is an issue,
but I'd buy a SC player to have the portability of my music -- to my
office, my friends house, a vacation weekend, or the car (maybe not yet
a flying car). See Aubuti's earlier comment and link to the related
thread about everyone having external hard drive(s) of our music (as a
backup)in our moutain house or our office.

Full ack. Not much to see inside, but isn't the 19" form factor for
audio components a waste of space at all ;-) ? BTW, it fits snugly into
my *existing* 19" waste of space *lol*. Even nicer than a SB classic ...
just like transporter does ...

Of course not. Digital out is AFAIR only RCA, but it's there. There's
also a website similar to SN to add/edit web radio favorites, get
podcasts and so on. Unsure about additional services, didn't try it, but
they're not very important for me. Really important is only MP3 and web
radio. And MP3 directly via USB, without dedicated, pricey and energy
eating $$ server hardware/NAS which has to be maintained and
administrated. Just put a simple, noiseless and cheap USB Stick in it
and have access to 16 or more GB of MP3s, what means at least 200 CD
albums ripped for me. O.k., no NTFS capability, FAT32 only, but that's
o.k.

I only returned the Muvid to the vendor because of its lousy WLAN
performance. In german hifi communities I was told that many other users
see an excellent WLAN performance, but my copy was bad. Maybe the
internal antenna connector was loose, but one of the case screws was
warranty sealed and I didn't want to lose the warranty ... There was no
other copy in the store, so I went to a SB classic which is a nice piece
of hardware, too. It sounds clearly better, supports more file formats,
has more online capabilities and the case is very well built, too :-)).

> And for a price close to the SB3??
In germany actually it's 36% less, but that was not the point.

Server ? I don't use any dedicated server. And I don't want one at the
moment. Very rarely I use my Notebook with SC. A simple slim 2,5" USB
hard drive is the only thing I would buy for audio purposes when going
for FLAC ripping my CD albums for better audio quality. And this low
noise drive can be very close to my hifi equipment I think.

Sounds good - *as a begin :-)*
But why to limit USB to the boom only ?

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server

2009-05-07 Thread Chewie

I’ve been using the 7.4 WHS version on my EX475 for 6-8 weeks now and I
must say in that time it has come on in leaps and bounds and now offers
everything a typical user could want in a WHS add in.

Initially I was a bit uneasy using the nightly builds having had
problems with the old Windows versions of them when I ran them on an XP
machine but since the automatic download feature was activated, I have
been regularly using the nightly builds on my WHS without any problems
whatsoever.

So thank you to all those involved in the WHS version and its continued
development, your doing an excellent job.

the memory to run SqueezeCenter. If it did, it would cost a heckuva lot
more. The Boom (like the other SBs) is just a receiver; all the real
work is done by SqueezeCenter. Making the Boom a totally independent
unit would require a complete redesign, make it bigger, probably require
a fan for cooling the processor (thereby introducing all kinds of
problems keeping the sound quality decent), and make it much more
expensive. It would be a wholly different product from anything in the
SB line. It's like wanting to put wings on a car and make it fly; it's
conceivable, but would require radically different engineering from what
it is now. Nothing about the current design makes it possible to just
plug in a USB drive and go.

But the Boom does have an input jack. You can plug any old MP3 player
into it and use it as an amp/speaker player that way. Or use it with a
personal laptop (as opposed to company property) running SC, wired
directly, and thereby get the full benefit of the front panel interface
and lossless music files.

That's possible, but doesn't explain why if I sync with flac/mp3 later
in the day, there are no problems - it's just first thing in the morning
with the radio stations... Perhaps there is a greater overhead with
syncing wma radio stations?

FYI: squeezecenter is running on a dedicated 1.6Ghz/1GB Pentium M
machine running linux.

I agree 110%!I have an 250 GB USB external hard drive full of FLAC
files that I would like to play anywhere. Seems like the Boom should
have a USB input. It would solve my upcoming problem (see below).

My office is "upgrading" and restricting the software installed on our
soon-to-arrive new computers -- for security. So no more Foobar2000 to
listen to my music. Any suggestions on how to listen to my 12,000 FLAC
files at work without being able to add additional software?

Instead of the Boom with a USB connection for my office (which would be
simple), I was thinking about this way too complicated solution -- the
Linux wall wart with SC installed connected to the USB external hard
drive as source and a SB with powered speakers for music.

[slim] Problem with low sample rate MP3s

2009-05-07 Thread CountZero

I have had a lot of problems lately with MP3s that the Squeezebox
refuses to play. I can play many files with no trouble, but not these.
MP3 diagnostics says that the files are OK.

I mainly listen to audio books with low bitrates. While looking for a
reason, I noticed that the files that will play have a sample rate of 44
kHz, while the ones that won't play have a sample rate of 22 kHz.

If you queue the file remotely, through the web interface, the elapsed
time counts up to 4 seconds and resets to 0 in an infinite loop.

Can anyone else duplicate this problem?

Re: [slim] Scrobbling Deezer

2009-05-07 Thread Dingostrategy

It's a good question, and I've found it because I am asking the same
one!

There is a 'native' scrobbler for lastfm in later versions of SC. We
used to have to add a plugin but then it got bundled in.

I've only recently discovered deezer and I like it's approach. I'm
finding it works beautifully with iPeng and even gives album art. Nice
touch. But that's not the only good part.

I'd like to scrobble as well, but it would require a plugin to SC. In
fact unless something is wrong with mine, Deezer doesnt even appear in
the SC interface (yet?) so I imagine a plugin to scrobble has to come
after that (but i'm just a punter and that technical stuff eludes me.

Hopefully this happens!

IIRC, the Enum and Security keys are created when the service first
runs. Apparently, it's not starting on your system.

Is there anything in your Windows Event logs?

> I even loaded LAME files(although not sure why). I use FLAC mostly.

Only necessary if you'll be transcoding to MP3. Many people run
Squeezeslave on a PC at work, so find it necessary to stream
lower-bandwidth MP3 rather than FLAC.

> P.S. Also, should it be a local system, local service, or network
> service?

By default, it will be created as a 'Local System' service. You might
need to change this to run under a user account. Create a local user
with password, then in the service properties go to the 'Log On' tab and
change it to use the account you created and enter the password.

Re: [slim] HowTo- Install SqueezeSlave as a Windows Service

2009-05-07 Thread JJZolx

A couple of additions to your instructions:

If you'll have multiple computers running Squeezeslave then you'll want
each to have a unique MAC address. This is set in the AppParameters.
As ralphy mentioned, it's also desirable to specify '--retry'. I use a
parameters string that looks like:

--signal --retry --mac 01:01:01:01:01:0E 192.168.9.12

If you want the service to start automatically when the machine boots
up, set its startup type to 'Automatic' in the Windows services Control
Panel applet.

You may also find that it's necessary to run the service under a user
account. You can just create a local Windows account on the machine,
give the user a password, then in the same Services applet, tell the
service to run using this account.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-05-07 Thread elziko

Thanks for this little application - it's a great idea.

I can't really use it fully until it can connect to a SqueezeCenter
with password protection but I have tried it quickly and here are a
couple of things I have noticed:

1) If you change the server address this isn't honored until the
application is restarted but the user isn't given any notification of
this.

2) Lack of authentication support - but I gather you already know
that.

3) Appearance on a VGA screen - they layout for the most (see below)
seems OK but quality is poor since the screen is obviously being resized
to fit the bigger area leading to a pixilated look.

4) When listing all the players I have the list gets cut-off. See
attached image.

But on the whole it seems to work OK - if it could also behave as a
player that would be great but I'm sure that unlikely to happen!

I look forward to testing some more when authentication is included.

Thanks!

You could delete the log, start the process that causes the errors and
shut down SqueezeCenter before the log grows so large that you can't
open it. Then you should be able to paste some of the errors here.

There was an issue with an earlier version of 7.3 which caused massive
logging. But this should have been fixed in 7.3.2 or 7.3.3 at least.

Just stop SC, wipe the log files, restart, and stop immediately after the
