Unlike their other products, it was of an extremely low quality and at launch was quite simply unusable. Hundreds of owners struggled to get the device and/or it's controller connected to their wifi network - many of them existing Squeezebox owners. Logitech refused to accept responsibility and blamed issues with the owners setup and other external factors. Magically, 6 months later, a firmware update fixed the majority of issues - despite many owners having wasted money on new routers etc. to try and resolve the problem. Not what I would call quality and many long term Squeezebox owners also regard it as the black sheep of the family." Talk about walking a mile in my shoes! [slim] Rhapsody Error for the last 2 days
I have been getting the following error since Thursday: "Audio stream failed, skipping to next track" Nothing else happens and no music plays. It happens irrespective of how I choose tracks from within Rhapsody (Channels, my libray, search, etc). I tested out the PC-app and it is able to connect to and stream from Rhapsody just fine. Also, this error is present irrespective of whether I use SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork. I have had occasional hiccups in Rhapsody service over the last year, but usually I had to just upgrade firmware on my SB3 or just wait a few hours for the fix from Rhapsody. This time, its been down for the last 2 days now. Since I don't see similar messages being posted, I assume this is not a widespread issue. Hopefully there is some quick fix I can apply? BTW, Classical.com and Napster both are streaming fine to this SB3. Its just Rhapsody that is having the problem. But it seems by network it is less stable than before. Squeezeplay hangs more often. Maybe i will try it. With Softsqueeze. Today i did bought by German Amazon ( http://www.amazon.de )my first Squeeze Hardware. They have a spechial offer for the Classic. 164,97 Euro this is 230,37 $ and include free transport. Correct, as I said, you should get basic Internet Radio menu's and playback even without a SN account. If your player is on SC and you have your SN account login on SC then you don't even have to have "SN registered" players as SC will do so automatically (you don't even need a PIN). Re: [slim] Podcast Info Please
Welcome to the Squeezebox family! Sounds like you're enjoying your experience so far. As far as Podcasts go, I have found that using Mediafly is the best way to manage my Podcasts. Since Squeezebox has Mediafly capability, you can set up all of your podcasts on Mediafly and access then through your Squeezebox. The added benefit to using Mediafly is that you can also use it to access your Podcasts through a regular web browser when that suits you. I currently access Mediafly through: Web browser Squeezebox Chumby iPod Touch Here's an RSS feed of my Podcasts: http://www.mediafly.com/RSS/Users/ChrisNY/MyQueue -- ChrisNY ChrisNY's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5004 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63854 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It doesn't exactly ignore tags, but it won't report the tag data in the pane where you're browsing. If you actually add the files to the playlist/queue, you'll see that it's reading tag data. The law is vague but it basically says that the retailer is liable, for up to six years, for what a reasonable person would expect. In practice, if we could assume that a reasonable person would expect a squeezebox to last four years given that it is a premium product and that it's mode of use means it sits somewhere and does it's job. If the squeezebox failed after three years the retailer would only be liable for 25% of the value. The retailer is only liable for the usage you have been deprived of not the usage you have had. This is a reason why many products cost more in the UK. I'm sure it's a cost that many small businesses competing online underestimate. I haven't been following the threads closely because I don't own an iAnything and don't plan to, but from my casual reading of the opinions I gather that most users think iPeng on an iPhone or Touch is *way* better than the SBC. Re: [slim] Comparison between iPeng and Controller?
I've got both and find myself using iPeng on my iPod Touch more than the Controller. It's nicer to use because of the larger screen and touch abilities. However, the Controller does also give the option of using it as a portable player which is nice if you want to lie in bed listening to a wider range of music than the iPod can hold (although I have to limit the bitrate for the Controller as it won't stream FLAC files reliably - a separate issue discussed elsewhere on the forum). iPeng does have the portable player functionality on its roadmap for a future update, so at that point the Controller may become redundant, especially as my iPod seems to have better wireless ability and it's cheaper to buy an 8Gb Touch + iPeng than a Controller. The other thing to remember is that the iPod is more than just an alternative Controller. It can browse the web, check email, play games, play video, offer other streaming music services and the Appstore allows for many more possibilities for use. If I had neither and was going to buy only one, it would be the iPod + iPeng (sorry, Logitech). -- DoomWolf DoomWolf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64145 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Visually Impaired
These days, it's rare to get surprised in a good way when you buy a product. I was hoping for minimal accessibility with the Squeezebox Boom, and I found a product that surpassed all my expectations. I was afraid the setup would be difficult for my sighted assistant, after I'd read the quickstart guide. He was done in thirty minutes, and I was on Squeezenetwork, independently setting up all my accounts with the Slimdevices partners. Within the hour, I was adding favorites, and listening to music! :-) I wish all web developers would take their cues from the Squeezenetwork site! It is one of the most accessible sites I've ever found, and of special note is the on-site player. I was able to do things with my Slacker and Pandora stations from the Squeezenetwork site, that I've been unable to do from the original sites! Every button is clearly labeled on the player, so that i can control the Boom from my computer, which is something i could not do with the other wifi radio I own. This weekend, I hope to explore the actual player more, and see if it's going to be accessible without the computer. But even if it isn't, I've learned that I can buy a universal remote, and access all my favorite music that way. So either way, this is the best $300 I've spent in a long time. I think it would be very simple and inexpensive to give the Boom even more accessibility features. If I could make suggestions, I would add; 1. the option for click sounds to the scroll wheel 2. speaking menus where the options are consistent (for example, "home" "now playing" etc.) 3. speaking channel numbers I'll let you know how things are going as they develop. But again, thank you to the developers of the Boom for a wonderful product! -- Jena Jena's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30672 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hallo Sebastian, somehow if you have more than one player to choose it can not be selected. I have 4 players on my softwarebased installation. It is Squeezeplay beta and Softsqueeze at the eeebox and the same at my laptop. If i open all four the Squeezecenter shows four players and i can choose them differently. Re: [slim] Product Longevity
I bought my original SB2 back in 2005 and it worked flawlessly until Nov last year when it just died one evening. Fortunately it was only the power supply - so a £5 replacement original supply from Patrick at At-tunes got me up and running again. My Duet, Receivers and Boom are less than a year old so I cant really comment on those. Warranties are a difficult one. Any specific time is quite arbitrary, and I think you should expect a reasonable life time for a product, which is what the UK law details. I certainly wouldnt want to spend the best part of £300 on a Duet if I only expected it to last a year - but how long should it last - 3 years, 5, 10 I certainly wasnt a happy bunny after my original ipods battery want down to only holding charge for 10 mins within 18 months of purchase. Not what I expected after paying the £399 at the time. I know battteries are consumer items that dont last forever - but would expect more than this (especially as it wasnt replaceable at the time). Dont forget that companies (and I certainly dont include Slim/Logitech here) can cut corners by using cheaper parts that could outlast the warranty but not have an especially long life. -- bradcook bradcook's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1033 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64114 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

This law has been in effect in the UK for at least 30 years. The reality is that people rarely take advantage of it, except when something breaks early on. In fact most people in the UK seem to think that everything has a 12 warranty and nothing more. I suspect that if this went to the small claims court that Dabs wouldn't even bother to contest it. It just isn't worth their while. In the UK you can take a small claims court action just by filling in forms online and paying as little as £25. People rarely do though. Most of the people I do know who have taken an action against a large company won, simply because the company didn't bother to contest the claim. -- andynormancx Yes, it will. Yes, all of them. [slim] Foobar / Squeezebox CLI integration ?
Hi all, I'm mainly using squeezecenter to play my music collection. However, i'm also using Foobar as another library management tool to maintain my libraries (very fast and highly customisable!). It would be very interesting to send simple CLI commands from Foobar to control playback on Squeezebox players, ie from Foobar: - Choose Squeezebox Player; - Play / Pause current song in Squeezebox; - Add song to current playlist. This CLI mechanism is currently used by Orange CD Catalog (www.firetongue.com) to control squeezebox. Any information if some Foobar script or module is available for this usage? Re: [slim] Product Longevity
My issue here is not that I need to replace this particular SB3 as I already have. It actually failed around the 2 year mark and that means basic cost of ownership was around £100 per annum. I expected it to last longer. Now, the law (which I didn't define) states that the supplier, not manufacturer is liable if the goods fail in an unreasonable length of time. I admit I have had some benefit from the product, so I'm not expecting a full refund, but I would accept compensation for future loss of enjoyment from the product. So if we expect an SB3 to last 5 years and it died after 2, then an amount of compensation for the remaining years seems reasonable. Else they could finance the repair of it. Cliveb makes an excellent point and in the long run, this shift in power back to the consumer may result in better quality goods in the long run. They don't make things like they used to :) By the way, the state of the world economy is not my responsibility. I already pay in excess of £30k a year tax which goes to support the millions of useless pen-pushing administrators in the non-productive government offices. I'm not defending this law, but playing devil's advocate for a moment, perhaps it's an indirect way of weeding out products that routinely fail to give reasonable service. Over time, multiple retailers will notice that they're hurting because of repeated failures of a particular item, and make a business decision to stop selling them. Eventually said item disappears from the marketplace, to everyone's benefit (apart from the manufacturer of said shoddy item). BTW: Let me make it absolutely clear that I'm NOT suggesting the Squeezebox falls into this category! Back to reality: I reckon the way some people on this thread are interpreting this law is not realistic. It seems that quite a few UK laws are open to unreasonable interpretation by the man in the street, in a way that was never intended when it was written. >From what I understand about this process, it is not enough to show that many SB3s are still running after 3 years. A retailer has no responsibility to replace a product that has simply reached the end of its life, even if the life of your particular SB3 is shorter than average. You would need to show that the failure was due to a latent fault present at purchase, or that the SB3 lacked the expected durability. The point is, in the first 6 month it is supposed that the fault do already exist when the unit was delivered and the reseller has to prove if not. That's easy for the customer. But for the rest of the time the customer has to prove that the fault do already exist during delivery. That's not easy for the customer. This warranty is based on an European act!
