Back in the day when you sat down to learn a song from an album it was a nice feature to be able to adjust the turntable to your guitar, keyboard, whatever... [slim] Can't Control Internet Radio From One SB
I have 2 SB Classics, 2 Duets, and one Boom. The SB Boom is in my bedroom and is my clock radio in there. I usually have all of these synced with each other. I've run into some funky problems along this line and I can best illustrate it with what happened this evening. I've been falling asleep to the TV lately, and last night wanted to turn on music on my Boom and fall asleep to that. Lately I've been listening to a few different RadioIO stations on my SBs and the one I use the most is the one in my study, a Duet. Tonight I was listening to Roots of Rock on RadioIO on my Duet in my study. While the other 4 SBs were synced, they were all off. Then I shut off my Duet and went to bed. I turned on my Boom and tried to pick, from Favorites, the RadioIO Jazz Standards. The connection timed out. Since I had seen similar problems recently, where a connection times out with one SB but not others, I hauled my carcass out of bed, went to my study and used the remote to turn the Duet on to Jazz Standards and it went on -- then I could hear it from the Boom as well. I turned the Duet off with no problem to the Boom. This got my curiosity up, so I went back to the Boom and changed it to Vocal Jazz, again on RadioIO. Again, connection time out. So I turned the Duet to Vocal Jazz and both SBs started playing that station. All was well, I turned off the Duet and the Boom still played on. Now I used the remote from the Duet, changed it to the Boom, and tried to change the Boom to another station from the remote. Again, it timed out. So I used the remote and set the Duet to that station. And, again, both started playing the same music. I also experimented by taking the Boom off the sync with the other SBs. Still the same. I tried calling up the RadioIO streams from the Internet Radio menu instead of from Favorites. I tried another radio stream and it also timed out. In short, I cannot pick any radio stream from the Boom without getting a timed out error. I have to pick that stream for the Duet and keep them in sync. I've had this similar problem in the past few days with another SB. I tried to pick a RadioIO stream and it would not start until I went to the Duet in my study and started it there. (This was on another Duet.) So it looks like, for some reason, I can only pick and start streaming radio stations from one SB, the Duet in my study. I have found that I can pick a playlist or other music in my music library on the Boom. I just can't get any Internet Radio without a timeout. I'm using SqueezeCenter 7.3.3. I know there's an update, but I'm not a quick updater for software (it's running on Debian Linux). I also didn't see a bug in there pertaining to Internet radio that seemed to address this in the new version. At one point, once I started listening to streams instead of my own library, when I wanted to turn on an SB to what it was playing when I shut it off (or what the others it was synced to were already playing), I just hit the PLAY button on the Boom and the classics and hit the PAUSE button on the DUET remotes and it would turn that device on and play that stream. I don't do that, but I did start to notice a few funky things happening (that was a week ago, so I forgot what they were), so I changed to always turning each SB on and off instead of taking short cuts. Any ideas what is going on here? Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??
The thing is, this all worked fine until I upgraded to 7.3.3 of the SQCentre, which I needed to as I purchased a Duet / Controller. Coincidence can be distracting. Since about May-June BBC have been changing their network and some ISP have been massaging BBC traffic - so it may not help to speculate on the cause. When playing a WMA stream (assuming Native WMA is selcted in File types) on SB2/3, Boom or SBR - the data goes straight from BBC to player - so the version of SC will not affect resets or buffering as it is not involved - they are network effects from the hosts. I am not sure but possibly if the user has increased the Radio Station buffer so large that the BBC's TCP/IP timeout (usually about 3 mins) is kicking in to cause the reset because so much data is in the player buffer. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60962 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Questions about HTPC to run Boxee and squeezecenter
I am looking for a new project, Currently I am using the OH's laptop for squeezecenter and a modded Wii for playing SD movies from a mybook world NAS using homebrew. I want to get a nice low power silent device that I can have on all the time to host squeezecenter and then also have Boxee always running so its just a TV channel change away and then probably control it using the ipod touch app. I want to get away from using the OH's laptop as the fan is very loud and always seems to be starting up. I already have a of the shelf PVR so no real need for anything of this nature hence why i'm going the boxee route, I've only had a little play with it so far but they way it catalogues the movies and gives you extra info + trailer links is something i think is genius. I don't have a huge library at all, I have less than 3000 tracks all of which are MP3 at the moment and only 1 zone however I think I will have about 5 once I'm finished and they will always be synced so the machine needs to be capable of this. I may add another 4000 tracks in to the library but I have it separated at the moment as I just wouldn't listen to it a whole lot. I am not an audiophile at all so I am likely to be happy with 320kbps mp3's The box will also be used as a torrent box at night and will store all movies on so Id like at least 500gb on board but I accept for cost wise I may have to hook up some usb dicks. Raid would be a nice plus to ensure high availability and then will do backups off to USB drives / other NAS's I am thinking that I would be best to go for Ubuntu for reliability/getting the best from resources. I've not used it before but have done quite a bit of command line stuff on the mybookworld and am happy enough and I love a nice geeky challenge so ubuntu doesn't phase me. Options as I see them at the moment are, ASRock ION 330 A tranquil PC A decent Netbook. Fit-PC2 Acer Revo Asus Eee box I am thinking the first two are my better options seeing as I could get dual core and the ION chipset seems to get good reviews. I have to say the ASrock is probably favourite at the moment because of what's its offering for the money but am looking for some input from people with some experience. Re: [slim] Questions about HTPC to run Boxee and squeezecenter
.. to the FitPC is one of the Aleutia range of PCs (http://www.aleutia.com/products). I'm using a pre-upgrade version of the E2 (Via V4 Eden ULV 500MHz,512 MB RAM) with a 2.5 IDE disk for storage and U-Lite Ubuntu running from a CF card. I'm only running Squeezecenter on it, usually controlled using iPeng on my iPod Touch. Squeezecenter runs fine on it as far as playing music and syncing between three players is not a problem. If I need to rescan, or anything involving the web interface, things slow down a lot, so i'd say you will need more memory, and probably a bit more power in the CPU. The advantages are that it uses about 9W (with the drive), is passively cooled and small enough that it's easy to hide away. I looked at the original FitPC when I was buying, but it used a Geode processor which can cause problems with Linux (or could at the time), and anyway I got a good price on the E2. Before I'd used an ITX system using a fanless motherboard and an old laptop I'd made into a picture frame - both ended up running a bit hot and were too noisy with the cooling fans running. If I was buying now I'd choose between the Aleutia F5, the FitPC2 or a Tranquil Home server. I'd prefer something a bit bigger with a hard drive that's easy to swap (prefarably 3.5) - the hard drive in the E2 is a very tight fit and involved customising the cable. I've not used Boxee, but I'd be surprised if it used more resources than Squeezecenter so any of your choices should be fine. Re: [slim] All hail the Squeezebox (Classic, at least)...
I'll add my thumbs-up to this. I installed a pair of Duets (well, technically one Duet and an additional Receiver) a year ago, and followed them up with a Boom, and have been tremendously satisfied, happy and impressed with the way everything works ever since. In a large, multi-storey house the problem we'd had was getting music to different parts of the house when and where we wanted it. The SqueezeBox line solved the problem far better than I had hoped. At every party we've had people have noticed the music synchronized all through the place as they move around, and how it just plays continuously, without me having to change CDs or anything. When they comment on it, I take the opportunity to show off the Controller and explain how the system works (at least the basic idea), and everyone has been very (very!) impressed. The fact that I can also take song requests and slot them in to play next in the playlist floors them. (Of course, the fact that I have lots of great music to choose from has something to do with it. :) My wife and I have also gotten used to having music on all day long on weekends when we're working on projects around the house or yard. It makes everything more fun. And when I want to kick back and unwind after a long day, I can get comfortable pretty much anywhere (I also have the system set up to play through a set of wireless headphones, with the transmitter plugged in to a PC) and listen to whatever strikes my fancy, without ever having to get up to change the music. The SqueezeBoxes and SqueezeCenter have opened our music collection back up to us so dramatically it's hard to believe. Before, we had to be in the family room, where the stereo was, to listen to anything, and because it wasn't always convenient, we often didn't have music on at all. Selecting a specific album from the carousel CD player was a chore, and putting together good playlists was impossible. Now, music is available anywhere we want it, with anything we want to hear available in seconds. We use it outside when we're working on the yard, on the deck or patio when we're socializing with friends, and in the bedroom to go to sleep to, wake up to, and ... enhance the mood. My wife can have Danny Gatton on in the kitchen while she's cooking, and I can be listening to Prokofiev in the living room. We have dozens of playlists ready to go if we just want a mix for a specific mood or a party. Our daughter was home for a visit recently and while we were at work she picked up the Controller and (without having been given any training on it) figured out how to put on a random mix of all the blues in our collection, so she could sample artists she wasn't familiar with; whenever she heard something she didn't know but really liked, she made note of who it was, so she could explore that artist in more depth at her leisure. We've also been discovering new artists by using Pandora and LastFM, and I've bought more new CDs in the past year than I had in the previous five, simply because I've been discovering new stuff and now have a great way to listen to it. Absolutely, totally perfect and flawless? No. But the glitches and problems we've had over the course of the year have been extremely rare, and quite minor. And I never expect absolute perfection from anything. But The System as we refer to the whole SB configuration we have in the house, has been a huge hit for me, my wife, our grown kids when they visit, and everybody else who's seen and heard it. No other new gadgetry we've ever bought has brought us as much pleasure. I'll be expanding the system soon, with at least one more receiver (either SBR or Classic; I haven't decided yet) and at least one more Boom, when we finish remodeling the library and one of the guest rooms. I'll probably also add another SBR and some outdoor speakers to feed the deck and patio, instead of having to carry a Boom out there. I agree with the OP: since these forums are here largely to help people who are having problems, it's natural that most of the posts are from people with problems, misunderstandings or complaints. But a thread like this now and then, for people to post their success stories, help to balance things out a little, and maybe let new users or potential buyers see that the SB products really do work, and really are amazingly cool. They've literally changed our lives. -- Dogberry2 Dogberry2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18883 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65545 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] All hail the Squeezebox (Classic, at least)...
I had three other Gatton albums on my Amazon music wish list (which currently stands at 117 CDs) but had not yet come across that one. It now shares the #1 priority slot with a Joe Pass Roy Clark album (which I also just heard about a few days ago, from a friend who stumbled onto a clip of it on YouTube). My next order to Amazon is going to net me some great guitar work (which will probably mean a significant decrease in my own playing time, through sheer discouragement). [slim] How do I stream WAV (pcm) from FLAC files?
My music collection is stored as FLAC files. I understand that my SB3 and SB2 can play these streaming FLAC files. How do I set up the Squeezecenter server so that it streams in WAV format to the clients instead of FLAC? Is there a setting under AdvancedFile Types for this? Am I correct in assuming that WAV format is another name for 44.1 khz / 16 bit stereo linear PCM in this instance? Someone suggested I try having the FLAC transcoded to WAV on the Squeezecenter server PC and stream in WAV format, that the SB client would have less work to do and the result might be better sound (from lower jitter?) I am skeptical that it will sound different, but I am willing to try it to see if I can hear any difference. I have pretty good audio gear (Quad electrostatic speakers, clas-A amplifier, etc) and it is possibile that if there's a difference in sound I might be able to hear it. -- milosz milosz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11057 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65572 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SB1 intermittant gaps
What I found out when I was trying to sync with an SB1 was that it is extremely susceptible to hiccups in the single threaded squeezecenter. Apparently the delays incurred by certain plugins are enough to put it into a lurch. It could be causing the server to slowdown because its constantly resyncing. -- sander sander's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10737 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65319 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Please ignore stupid myths such as this one. If you want, you can rationalize FLAC to yourself in exactly the same way: the ethernet/wifi will have half as much work to do. Re: [slim] How do I stream WAV (pcm) from FLAC files?
That's pretty much a myth with the squeezebox. The squeezebox has to decode both FLAC and WAV anyway so it won't make a difference. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65572 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Go to Settings Advanced File Types and in the FLAC section, under Stream Format FLAC where it says 'Native', change it to 'Disabled'. Leave the other two settings as they are and FLAC files will be transcoded at the server and streamed as WAV/PCM. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65572 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
