[slim] Portable FLAC Players
Though a bit off-topic for Squeezebox, lots of us vast FLAC collections that, in addition to running though our various Logitech players, we'd like to be able to use on portable players: few of which support FLAC. That's for a reason, of course: FLAC file sizes are very large compared to MP3; and many players can't really live up to FLAC quality anyway. And it's also true that there are plenty of easy programs that will do a quick down-covert of FLAC to MP3. But, as I say, if you've got a massive FLAC collection at home, it's really very convenient to be able to throw a select few albums etc onto a portable player without having to do conversions. (of course, Controller does a wonderful job - but only up to 50 feet from base!) So this topic comes up from time to time here in Squeezebox forums. Mr Google produces this useful recent CNet round up: http://tinyurl.com/ku4yfj but I'm wondering if members here can throw in their own recent observations and experiences. A general question I have is do these several players support gapless FLAC playback?. I've got a lot of classical / opera where gapless is really crucial. For example, a buddy told me that a iPod can easily be hacked - with RockBox firmware - to support FLAC - but he *thought* it was not gapless. Re: [slim] Portable FLAC Players
Rockbox does indeed support gapless playback, AFAICT regardless of the hardware target you install it on. I have an iAudio X5 myself, with Rockbox firmware. The X5 sounds nice for a portable (it's reputedly one of the best), but not good enough that lossless really makes a difference. If you have the time, you may as well transcode to a lossy format and fit more songs on your player. In addition to this, I also apply some volume normalization since I tend to use my portable in noisy, non-ideal listening environments. Speaking of which, Rockbox also includes an equalizer which has been a godsend for me. My terrible car stereo can be made listenable. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65861 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Portable FLAC Players
Ahh - I thought RockBox was just an iPod hack, but Mr Google tells me otherwise! Sounds like a clever package, and definitely claims to be gapless for FLAC on all players that it supports. Next question - more and more I use my smartphone (a Sidekick) for casual music listening, really just for the convenience of only having one thing to carry (even if the audio quality is only so-so). Anyone know of a phone (or phone hack.) that supports FLAC? Again, I imagine that the only reason for it to do so would be pure convenience, for those with large FLAC collections. At least on hard drive-based players, though it might also be true of players with solid state storage. I suggest making an MP3 copy of your FLAC library using flac2mp3.pl, dBpoweramp, or some other tool. The convenience there is that you can fit that many more tracks on the portable player, and you can choose a quality level that corresponds to the sub-optimal output of the player. I don't know which players support gapless MP3 (that has been encoded with a proper version of LAME). -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65861 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

That battery issue is of course one to remember. Agreed that it's better - for all sorts of reasons - to have a duplicate library in MP3 (and indeed I sort-of-havebut it's never quite as up-to-date, in content or organization, as my FLAC library), but FLAC is my first port of call and, as I say, I do believe there's a market for FLAC playback on portable devices purely as a service to those whose chief collection is FLAC. Indeed, a bit of Googling reveals a demand for a FLACberry! I guess (I'm no developer.) that some sort of app is the way to go? after spending half the day researching this forum, the bugzilla database and the forum over at qnap.com and not finding anything conclusive, i give up and post my own thread now. first, my symptoms: - on the odd occasion i _can_ get my players synced, it holds for anywhere between 5 to 50 minutes, then breaks - usually, sync just slowly drifts apart. if i let it run, it will usually drift apart by about 2-3 seconds after about 30 minutes or so - i can aggravate it by loading a new playlist while synched. my playlists are large, ~1000 tracks. that breaks sync almost immediately. - a song transition (i have crossfade active) also seems to provoke the issue - once broken, the only way i have found to re-sync is to cold-boot one or both players and/or restart SC. - after an SC restart, sync seems to work for a while before the problems start over. - the situation seems to be deteriorating continuously. currently, it is almost impossible for me to acheive any reasonable synching at all. - the problem seems to be independent of the load on my qnap's processor now, my environment: Version: 7.3.2 - 24695 @ Mon Jan 19 18:36:25 PST 2009 Hostname: Turbonas Server IP Address: 192.168.0.102 Server HTTP Port Number: 9001 Operating system: Linux - EN - iso-8859-1 Platform Architecture: armv5tejl-linux Perl Version: 5.8.8 - armv5tejl-linux-thread-multi MySQL Version: 5.0.27 Total Players Recognized: 2 - both players are SB3/classics, both run FW 123 - running on a qnap turbonas 409, FW 2.1.4 Build 0318T, with SSTOS 3.15. - my library is about 50% vorbis (native), 45% mp3 (native) and 5% AAC (transcoded) - my playlists are typically ~500-1000 tracks long, but the problem also occurs with shorter playlists ~40 tracks. - control is exclusively done by the remote control - my qnap is configured to update its system clock every hour by ntp. i have verified this actually works. - my players are connected by wifi. the network test comes through up to 4000 kbit @ 100% for at least 10 minutes. does anyone have any suggestions for me? please keep in mind that i only have rudimentary linux knowledge... thanks VERY much in advance! -- dcote dcote's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9701 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] random music stops
Hi, what logging do you have turned on? If you set them to report Debug or info (can't recall) you might get more info. I do find that my music has been stopping recently due to 'multiple errors' or something so SC gives up!!! not sure why this occuring though. I've wired one of my receivers which has resulted in the problem going away - for now. I suspect it might be a rebuffering / connection issue and so SC just stops. -- mobileadam mobileadam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65485 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??

Re: [slim] Streaming internet station buffer
well, SC has an option to let you FORCE SC to proxy net streams, which i do b/c it somewhat improves my exp, (altho i still have issues). also, there is a 0-30sec option for buffering. having said that, to pause the stream for anything other than relatively short times would require, i believe, that SC record it somehow, like to a temp file. doubt that happens, but i wish some app did it. Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??
Just came across this thread (while looking for something else..). Here in Dallas, TX, (and occasionally in New York City and the South of France)I listen all day and everyday to BBC via Alien. Mostly Radio 3 (which is my morning Alarm wakeup), but to R4 and R7 Live streams, plus the various Listen Again archives. Almost always works perfectly (especially under the current software releases, as below), and even for R3 Classical - the Proms just now - the audio quality is perfectly acceptable. Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
7.2.1 is the gold standard for me as well. My 'upgrade path' has been 7.2.1 - 7.3 - 7.2.1 - 7.3.1 - 7.2.1 - 7.3.2 - 7.2.1 - 7.3.3. - 7.2.1 - 7.4 - 7.2.1. Wow, quite the journey without getting anywhere. In some versions rebuffering was more prevalent, in others less, but sooner or later it always showed it's ugly face. After QNAP released the new firmware for the TS109II the problem was less prominent, but even one rebuffering per night annoys the heck out of me. From reading all the posts related to this problem I learned that there is not rebuffering in 7.2.1 since that 'functionality' was introduced with the 7.2.2 release. -- deutscherhififan Primary: QNAP TS109II BPT CPC Modwright Platinum Signature 'Truth' Transporter with 6N30P DR 'Super Tubes' + EML 5U4G Mesh or Oppo BDP-83 Maxxed Woo Audio WA2 with TungSol 5998's, Amperez Bugleboy 6DJ7's, and Mullard EZ80's Audio Mirror 45W SET Monoblocks Piega P4XL II + Piega PSub4.
