Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-24 Thread dsdreamer

I had stated earlier in this thread that I never saw any rebuffering
issues in 7.3.3., but that was clearly tempting fate. It happened to me
yesterday!

I was playing a FLAC-encoded album at the time and immediately switched
on the buffering monitoring diagnostic screen saver on my SB3. I
noticed that the buffer fullness bar was not able to get to 100%, but
was doing a random walk and sometimes emptying completely, thus
triggering a rebuffering pause.

I then checked what else was going on around the network, and found
that one of my sons had a Steam game downloading and was getting
excellent download speed. Sufficient speed, in fact, to choke off my
bandwidth for streaming FLACs. (I don't currently have any QoS rules in
effect on my LINKSYS WRT54GL running Tomato firmware.)

My curiosity was aroused to see what streaming bandwidth was being used
by the SB3 when playing back FLAC across my wireless network. The
attached chart shows what I could find by looking at the Tomato realtime
bandwidth monitor. Looking at the graphic you can see three tracks being
played in the space of 10 minutes.

* The gaps before the peaks are when the end of the previous track is
being played out of the SB3's buffer memory and the SB3 has not begun to
pre-buffer the next track.

* The peaks are when the next track is getting buffered as quickly as
possible.

* The steady(ish) 700kbps bandwidth is during normal track playback
when the buffer is being consumed at the same rate it is being
replenished and is close to 100% full.

Notice that network conditions were gradually improving during this 10
minute window, indicated by the peak bandwidth during the buffering of
the up-coming track. Ideally, this should be as narrow and tall as
possible meaning the buffer was refilled in a short period of time.

A vulnerability exists if the (supposedly) rapid buffering of the next
track is throttled by network congestion. Under these conditions the
weakest point is when you have emptied the previous track buffer but
can't get sufficiently ahead of the game to gain some safety margin. It
seems to me that to safely play back FLACs with an average bandwidth of
700kbps, you need some safe multiple of that bandwidth to be reliably
available (at least x2, but preferably x4 or better).

It would be better still if the SB3 would start buffering the next
track earlier (i.e., alternating between two buffers so you can fill the
next buffer while playing out the current one). That gap, followed by a
peak is what will surely cause trouble in some marginal connectivity
scenarios.

Tell me about it. I'm back on 7.2.1 now, and not a rebuffering error
in sight. Also, it's much more responsive and I no longer have any
refresh problems with Squeezecenter.

I hope that someone at Logitech is paying attention to this. What good
are updates that ruin your product? I really like the Squeezebox, I
want to see the product line succeed. Someday I'd like to get a
Transporter and maybe one of the upcoming touch models.. but certainly
not if their software works as it does right now. I repeat: rebuffering
is ruining the Squeezebox experience.

Re: [slim] Best mobile phone for controlling SB?

2009-07-24 Thread MeSue

Thanks for the details, gharris! Now I just hope the rumors are true
about Touch getting a camera. Wouldn't mind reducing my purse weight a
little.

As far as Notes, I use OneNote rather than Outlook for that -- it syncs
with Windows Mobile when I'm not having to fight to get things to sync.
I would miss OneNote, but I think there is something on the horizon for
that with OneNote 2010.

I've got data in Outlook going back as far back as 1997, but I'm pretty
sure the PSTs have been upgraded a few times over the years.

As far as 3-way sync, I played around with Google calendar sync, and I
thought it was working well, but today I discovered all of my calendar
events are repeated 5, 6, 7 times. Ugh. Not sure if Google sync is the
culprit, but I've disabled it for now. I also have Windows Live so I
will just have to use that for my online sync.

Good to hear that sync is two-way and works well now on the Touch.

How have you tagged the multiple artists? By using a separator char
(;)? Let me know and I'll see if I can fix this within ACC.

I think most users just use the artist tag for this separating them
with a comma instead of the ; char. The ; causes separate entries for
each artist in the ARTIST DB Table. I have to look if I can create a
query that aggregates all track artists to a single DB entry or string.

Syncing is most definitely two-way now. You may be remembering the
complaints that folks had against the first version of the iPod touch
(which is what I have.) Syncing was one-way with the original firmware.
If I remember correctly, there wasn't even a way to add calendar events
on the iTouch. The work-around (which worked for me) was to jail-break
the Touch and install the iPhone version of all the apps.

Since the installing the 2.0 version firmware of a year ago, I don't
think there has been any difference between the iTouch and iPhone
version of the stock apps. This is true in the version 3 release of
last month too...with the exception of the voice memo app (the iTouch
doesn't have an internal mic) and the video creation stuff which I
believe is specific to the iPhone 3Gs.

I just tested two-way syncing with my iTouch. I created a calendar
entry and a new contact on the Touch and then synced. (Yes, the backup
took 10 minutes...grrr.) The new entries showed right up in
Outlook. I deleted them in Outlook and synced again. No backup
required this time...sync took only a few seconds. The newly created
entries were dutifully deleted from the Touch. Two-way syncing works
just fine.

If I'm to be honest, I'd have to echo what others are saying here
concerning their distaste for iTunes. On a Core2-quad machine with 4
gigs of memory and running vists64, it still feels like iTunes needs
very last resource the machine has to offer in order to do even
rudimentary tasks. And god help you if you need to sync in a hurry.
The obligatory backup of the iThing that iTunes enforces during syncing
still seems glacial, even after Apple allegedly addressed this issue.
iTunes is an app that will teach you patience.

Re Outlook: The above complaints aside, Outlook integration works
well, in my experience with both a Touch and an iPhone. Syncing is
two-way. I like to keep my Outlook contacts categorized by keeping them
in sub-folders. The iThing/iTunes respects this and allows you to
select all or a subset of folders to sync. The same is true for
calendars. The one area that seems to not work so well is Notes
syncing. Any notes sub-folder organization that you may have in Outlook
gets squashed into a big, flat list on the iThing. For me, this
effectively makes Notes syncing useless and means that I can't use this
feature at all.

I initially had real trouble syncing my calendar. I think that this
was probably due to the fact that I had been nursing along the same
Outlook PST data file since Office 2k. After I built a new PST,
imported my data and eliminated the archive.pst, the calendar syncing
started working perfectly.

Personally, the holy grail of syncing would be to find some way of
achieving perfect three-way syncing between the iThing, Outlook and
Gmail/Gcal. I've dabbled a little in this, but it's still eluding me.

I find that an incredibly useful feature of mp3tag is the list of *all*
existing tags that you get when you highlight a track (or group of

Phil,

I just upgraded from MP3TAG 2.4.1 to 2.4.3 and when looking at the tags
noticed a DiscNumber tag field (it may have been there before but I
didn't see it, or the install of 2.4.3 re-set my view or something so
that I could see it) and that DiscNumber tag had a value of 1/1 on the
MP3s from Amazon - it was blank for all the other tracks. I emptied
that value and did a clear/rescan and now things show up fine and in the
correct order!

I've been Slackin' on the FLACin'...I've ripped a little over 1000 CDs
that I own and have been terrified of having to go back and rip them all
again. I've been intrigued by FLAC and sooner or later I'll probably
start ripping in that format...

Anyway - it looks like I'm fixed up - thanks for pushing me into
messing with the tags.

Well... it's a rather odd situation to have some files in an album in
one format and some in another. I can't remember anyone in the last 4
years raising this.

I wouldn't expect to see that fixed quickly (if indeed the devs
classify it as a bug). By all means file a bug, though.

Just convert them all to FLAC and say goodbye to the problem :-)

through Amazon.com using the MP3TAG software, and did a clear/full
rescan again, with no luck.

I think what I'm seeing is probably because the tags are different
types (WMA vs ID3V2) as you say. Seems like a bug?

Re: [slim] synchronization problems - and getting worse

2009-07-24 Thread CatBus

When I say noticeable drift, I mean it'd be correct one day, 10 minutes
slow the next day, 20 minutes slow two days later, etc. A little normal
clock drift, that you wouldn't notice except over very long periods of
time, should be perfectly fine.

I think your best bet is to set up a test server on a full-powered PC.
If the problem goes away, we know it's something with the QNAP. If it
DOESN'T go away, one of your SB3's may have a hardware problem, and you
could call support.

But...

Sometimes Windows thinks Squeezecenter is idling allthough you are
still listening to your music. There are some special tools like the
"Really prevent system standby" plugin to handle such issues.

I had some problems with windows entering standby or hibernation to

Are you running XP or Vista?
On a Windows PC you can setup the power management to automatically go
so suspend after x minutes (right click on desktop... Properties -
Screen Saver - Power)

see here for how to setup S3

Re: [slim] synchronization problems - and getting worse

2009-07-24 Thread aubuti

I don't have any great insights because sync has been working fine for
me, but here are a couple ideas. Do you still get the problems if the
playlist doesn't have any transcoded tracks (AAC in your case)? When the
players are drifting apart, what happens on track transitions? Is there
any stuttering/re-starting as SC tries to re-sync the players, or do
they just carry on, with one player making the song transition smoothly
2-3 seconds before the other makes a smooth transition? (I'm assuming
here that your individual tracks are not 30 minutes long -- please let
me know if that assumption is wrong!)

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic turns PC on !

2009-07-24 Thread andynormancx

It uses a technology called Wake On Lan, it sends a "magic" network
packet to the PC, when the PC is in suspend mode it keeps the network
card powered up and wakes the PC when it sees the "magic" packet.

You can control your PC power from the Squeezebox using this plugin:

http://code.google.com/p/srvrpowerctrl/

wake-on-lan... :-)
a plugin (srvcontrol?) is required to turn the server off...although if
you have a modern PC that can go into S3 suspend state you don't NEED
this - just let the PC go to sleep by itself.

Hi all,

I have the opposite of a problem.

After doing a reinstall of windows a couple of weeks back , when I now
turn my SBC on it wirelessly turns my PC on which is fantastic as I
wasn't aware it could do this. :)

How does it do this ?

I'm now used to it and wondering if anyone who knows of this knows a
way to turn the PC back off which would be even better?

cheers

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v1.4 (ACC)

2009-07-24 Thread rperkin

I have found ACC to be one of the most useful tools for use with SC.

As a relative newcomer to the world of Squeezebox, I (like I guess all
of us here!) suffered the pain of ripping and tagging my music. ACC not
only documents my collection, but is also less forgiving than SC. I
believe that's a good thing, because it can expose errors in tagging
which otherwise go unnoticed as we sit back and listen to the music :).

As for the other points here:
- ACC works on my 23,000+ track collection
- I have used it against a local database, a remote database on a
Linux-based QNAP NAS, and a remote database under WinXP, all without
problem

The output looks very professional. I like it!

Apart from showing off to friends, an ACC printout has a much more
down-to-earth use. My music collection has cost me a very significant
sum of money over the years; should there be a disaster (fire, flood,
whatever) I now have a most useful document to back up any insurance
claim...

Kind regards

hi catbus!

no worries - right now, i am happy for ANY suggestions. ;-)

yes, i have tried much already. my daytime job is a hardware/tech/IT

generic tech point of view.

what is "noticeable" drift? using all the interfaces i have at my
disposal, i can not detect any drift. but that isnt saying much, since i
dont know how to to a professionally accurate measurment (with ms
precision!) of my 409's clock.

how would i got about that?

better yet, how can i skip that step and install an NTP daemon?
according to some threads i hve read here, that could solve the problem.
unfortunately, they dont describe how to got about that...
