Theres one AEx. The Squeezeboxes are connected directly to amps, and to
speakers. There is no preamp. There is no input selection in each room.

Yes, my thoughts exactly! The web UI should be updated to be in line
with what we have seen about the upcoming Touch, and the new look of the
Controller interface.

[slim] iTunes Integration & Special Characters?

2009-09-10 Thread the-ninth

Hi,

Although previous releases of SqueezeCenter already announced a
resolution for this issue I am still struggling with getting special
characters in file and directory names working with the iTunes
integration of SqueezeCenter.

I am using iTunes on Windows Vista 64 and am copying the iTunes files
to a Windows share of my Linux-based Synology DS-408 NAS, which runs the
SqueezeCenter 7.3.3 package from Synology. I changed the
SqueezeCenter.sh start file manually to add the parameter "--charset
utf8" after which the SqueezeCenter information page shows UTF8 as
operating system encoding.

The file names arrive fine on the NAS, all tools display them
correctly. Also with the normal scan function of SqueezeCenter all files
are recognized correctly. However, when I use iTunes integration
instead, all files with special characters like German umlauts in the
file or directory name are being omitted. In the log file I see the
following error for each file (after switching on debug output):

[09-09-10 22:56:17.1932] Slim::Plugin::iTunes::Importer::handleTrack
(335) File not found: /F:/Music/iTunes/Herbert Grönemeyer/live/16
Marie.mp3

I would appreciate any hints on how I could approach this issue.

Actually I would already greatly appreciate anybody telling me that she
or he as the same issue. Would make me feel less lonely and desperate
about this. ;-)

Thanks and regards, Robert

I´m pretty satisfied with the functionality, but the design doesn´t
look 2009. A really good deisgn would make a touch wall mounted PC an

How hard is it to change the html and graphics? Can I find

Its actually not esoteric at all. I have five squeezeboxes, each in a
different room. A friend will often visit with a laptop (or my SO will
have some audio on her own) and want to play some music for us, or for
themselves while working in one of the rooms. Without having to extend a
wire to their laptop from the stereo system, which in several cases
doesn't involve a preamp other than the squeezebox at all, they would
like to be able to play music from itunes.

This is fairly common in apple households. Visit a friend, "oh can i
play something now?" "sure, take over the airtunes target MYSPEAKERS"
"ok, here you go, listen." "ah, such nice music." No futzing with
wires.

In the combined AEx/SC case, an item "Remote Airport Express" would be
shown the same way "digital input" is shown on the transporter.

And, sure, wavinput would probably work except it doesn't work on macs.
All our machines here are macs, including the SC.

switch to nav could be done with a dial press, and return to volume
control from nav on a timeout.

My library is a collection of other libraries. Its basic structure
cannot change. I suppose I could settle for a suppress flag in the
schema and writing my own tools to clean up what shows up, as long as
suppress was honored throughout. (i want to continue to allow scans of
my library for new or change content, cant change the structure of it or
actually eliminate dupes in any fundamental way)

Indications are that there are none. There have been a few, but they
have disappeared. http://www.cocoadev.com/index.pl?AirTunes

In any case, barring this directly, the ability to provide a
server-local audio-input device as an output stream would be better than
nothing. Then i could just hook the airport express up next to the
server and it would appear to function the same way without any
licensing/crypto concerns. Such a function could be useful for other
cases as well, such as playing audio from a weather radio or other
device with an audio output near the server.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP, but it sounds like he wanted the
opposite: something to take the digital out of the Airport and send it
to a SqueezySomething.

WavInput plugin would do that, I think.

Well, you can also argue that you should clean up your library. :)
Detecting the "same metadata" is not as easy as you might think, and the
work required for this would probably not benefit very many people. I
think there are some apps that can scan your full library for duplicates
and clean it up automatically.

Would be cool. I don't know if Genius is exposed via the various
iTunes APIs or not. iTunes uses completely different APIs on Mac and
Windows so anything like this basically has to be written twice.

Heh yes, one of my always-postponed items, I don't expect we'll have
any time to improve UPnP until someone in Marketing decides it's a
priority. Windows 7 has good UPnP integration so that's one good reason
to do it. However, we are totally swamped with Radio and Touch
development and just don't have any bandwidth for this. It's still on
the radar though.

I've never looked at Airtunes but I would guess this is impossible.
Apple almost certainly has locked this down so third parties can't
interface with Airports. Are there any open source projects that have
figured out how to do this?

[slim] The missing features which annoy me every day

2009-09-10 Thread chroma

After 5 years with squeezeboxes and squeezecenter/slimserver, I have
four SB3s and a Transporter, a library of 125k tracks, and an
unfortunate daily frustration with the lack of some functionality. I
wanted to enumerate what I wish this platform did so that developers and
logitech staff at least have an opportunity to vet it.

1) I wish the soft knob on the transporter would allow me to set it to
default to volume control. I've used it without a preamp, and it is
annoying to have to find and press the volume button.

2) Deduplication AT THE PRESENTATION LAYER of tracks. If two songs have
the same metadata, dont show me both of them. If I select an album, and
i happen to have two copies of it, don't add every track to the playlist
twice. If two copies exist, only show the one encoded with a higher
bitrate.

3) Fix the itunes plugin so that i can have it ONLY IMPORT PLAYLISTS,
and refresh them often, and not my entire library. I use itunes to build
playlists because playlist management on the slimserver interface is so
poor. I also use itunes to build playlists because i like genius. I want
my itunes playlists to show up in playlists, but not everything else.
This seems like it should be so easy!

3) Real itunes integration so i can use genius playlist generation in
real time from the SC interface. I don't care if its a scripted backend
sending keystrokes to the application, only care about the results.
genius is much beter with the size of collection and type of music i
collect than is musicip, and musicip is effectively dead as an
organization. yes, musicip is dead. nobody maintains the musicmagic
plugin anymore. the developer at musicip who wrote everything hasnt
worked there in a year.

4) A UPNP client that works. Sometimes I have music in other places
than slimserver. Sometimes friends come over with music. It sure would
be nice to allow them to access their music through the squeezebox.

5) I'm dreaming here, but an airtunes target. A plugin which allowed me
to use the digital output from an airport express and re-encodes it on
the server would be fine too... so when people ask "how can i play some
music from my laptop" i can tell them to just find the "slimserver"
airport express, select the transcoded input on any of the players, and
hear what they are playing.

Nice? Maybe you should define the term.

The improvements I could suggest to "default" are:

1. when displaying "artists," allow pressing the corresponding key to
take you to the result as clicking the letter in the web interface.

2. when an artist is selected that only has a single album, allow an
option that displays it without another click.

Use "music library" artists or albums. "Music Folder" is a brute force

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe it is not possible to reserve the use
of a word that is either in common use for that purpose and/or useful to
describe a product, because that would be unfair to others. Manufactured
words are usually okay.

So, Apple could reserve "iphone", Lenovo could restrict "ThinkPad", but
I believe an exclusive use of words like "laptop" or "laser printer"

For me, the syncing/rebuffeing issues that were bedeviling me for awhile
disappeared once I eliminated a few of the wireless/homplug jumps in my
network. Now, the tinkering I do is for fun, not just to get the darn
thing to work.

I would really miss the "tinkering" aspect of Squeeze, but I understand
why someone would switch if they couldn't get the basics to work
right...I was getting to that level of frustration myself.

Thanks, damager, for keeping us updated. If you ever want back in the

Has anyone really noticed speed issues with the Touch 2G? I can't say I

more dependent on SC than the remote, or so it seems to me.

You're missing some MS runtime libraries - this happens on very clean XP

The solution has been posted on other thread on the AAC problem - it

Oh, those were the days... where the community contributed their own skins

But if you have some HTML/CSS/JS skills, I'd be happy to help you come up

Btw, the 8GB models are still 2G.

That said: if you want a faster iPeng, take the cheapest iTouch and
invest in a faster server. As on my experience speed is more dependent
on server performance. There may be a few UI things that may become
faster with a faster iPod but you have to be aware that iPeng (and

I agree with you aboutwhy-pay, but I don't currently know of a free

Nicecast is perhaps intended as a broadcast solution (so something that

But basically it takes sound from any chosen program and converts it to
a broadcast stream.

Simpler for you to try it (free) than for me to try to explain further.

[slim] Choosing Specific Items From Playlists and Music Folder Using iTunes

2009-09-10 Thread The Witchdoctor

Currently, my version of SqueezeCenter (7.3.3) organizes my "Playlists"
and my "Music Folder" alphabetically, which is great. But when you want
to choose a particular Playlist or Artist from the Music Folder, the
heading at the top of each page (the "Master Listing" for lack of a
better title) lists the pages numerically, rather than giving you the
letters of the alphabet that will allow you to choose the exact item the
first time. You have to guess which "number" corresponds with the page
your alphabetical Playlist or Artist is listed on. Is there any way to
get Squeezecenter to give you the choice of offering you an
"alphabetical" listing of your Playlists and Music Folder items so you
can choose the exact Playlist or Artist without the guessing? I hope
this is clear, but this is the best way I know how to describe the
problem. If it's not clear, let me know. Thanks for your help in
advance!

Jacob

Twitter is the only "social network" I use - I like my online/real
personae to stay fairly separate, not least because of the work that I
do and the company I work for.

The best thing about it is that it's an amazing real-time search
engine, and you pick up stuff you'd never hear about otherwise. To give
an example, last weekend I found myself lying on a blanket in the middle
of a hidden park in the centre of London with 2,000 other people, most
of whom had dressed up to suit the theme, watching a cult film I'd never
heard of (to my shame!) and really enjoyed.

Now this may not be your thing, but it is mine, and I wouldn't have
found it without Twitter. I also mainly follow people with interests
similar to mine, not celebrities which makes a difference I think.

Slightly related-- I have a problem on the duet receivers, that when

[slim] SqueezeCenter/Receiver issue with streaming from Pandora/Last.Fm

2009-09-10 Thread russrimm

I just got a SqueezeBox receiver and installed SqueezeCenter. I have my
SqueezeBox receiver plugged directly into my router, and my
SqueezeCenter running on my Windows 7 machine with ports 9000, 3483
TCP/UDP open. The SqueezeBox receiver plays everything that's local on
my Windows 7 machine fine, but when I go to stream something from
Pandora or Last.FM, it shows the song for a few seconds, then a few
seconds later jumps to another song, then another, and so on, but never
is able to actually play any music. I used UDAP to configure the
receiver if that helps. I just can't get it to work with any of the
Internet radio sites, even though I configured them and activated them
properly.
Any ideas?

use the touch almost exclusively as a controller.

I also use ipeng and find it very good.

fyi- a couple things that I use the squeeze remote for instead of

making musicip mixes- it has always seemed clunky to do this in ipeng.
making mixes based on trackstat-also a matter of being hard to navigate

Thanks Dmager for your update.

One think I have noticed is that many Sonos fans have really jumped on
the Duet Controller as a major issue. I do agree it is not one of the
best products in the line from a stability point of view but it will
probably get better. But in doing some research, I see that Sonos users
have been complaining about lots of issues with Sono's new touch
controller and as well a new software update.

So sorry to see you move on and wish you good listening. For me I will
keep my Slim products and add more. I am really contemplating jumping
on the Touch and using tinysc to run things for now. I already have a

Upside:
The Sonos equipment is really easy to setup and does "just work". I
haven't had any major issues, and others in my household (wife, kids)
seem to be able to use everything easily. This was my main goals (high
wife acceptance factor rating).

Downsides:
1. The Sonos equipment isn't as "informative" as the SB equipment. No
front panel displays, etc. I don't like this.
2. There is no ability to "tinker" with the Sonos stuff. It does what
it does in a very simple manner, with very little or no ability to
customize.
3. The forums over there aren't very interesting. The Sonos user base
seems WAY less technical that the user base here, so they really can't
help much with the issues that are reported. Sonos tech support doesn't
seem to participate much at all in the forums.
4. Cost - it is quite a bit more expensive.
5. No Boom - I really miss the form factor and functionality of the
Boom.

That's funny. Don't know what they would put on the wall mounts made by
'the Chinese Logitek' (http://en.logitek.com.cn/), but they might also
want to partner up with the 'Texas-based Logitek'
(http://www.logitekaudio.com/), which makes audio routers.

Re: [slim] iPod Touch or iPhone to control music server

2009-09-10 Thread b33k34

I've been using iPeng for a while but Squeemote looks good as well.

Squeezecenter itself is starting to look like a weak link in the chain
now. The responsiveness and ease of use of iPeng (and even more so from
Squeemote) makes Squeezecenter's interface look a poor relation.

Is there any way these iPhone apps could be adapted for desktop use (at
least on Apple hardware)? Surely the major work has been done - these
apps are caching the library and artwork and delivering it quicker than
the web interface does.

For example I've always found Sync to be confusing and hard to find
whether by remote or web app but the sync interface of Squeemote looks
the business.

I thought I was one of a dying breed. All home listening is to FLAC
files wherever possible. I only buy iTunes tracks when I need something
quickly, usually to learn the bass part for a song.

My observation though is that most people are not too bothered although
with a reasonable system they might concede that 192 is better than 128
kbps. This includes my daughters who, despite all their indoctrination
with things "HiFi", humour me then go back to downloading all their
tracks from iTunes (at least they pay for it all).

I'm not saying agree with this situation, but it is what I observe.

Re: [slim] Radio Free Colorado is now streaming in 5.1 Channel Surround Sound

2009-09-10 Thread SamS

Mike,

If they had native 5.1 material, wouldn't they make mention of that?
Seems like a huge selling point.

The other indication that the source material is stereo comes when they
share this information:

> Gary said the Omnia DSP unit and mating software package being used at
> Radio Free Colorado can and does mathematically derive separate stereo,
> full-range surround for all channels up to 5.1, whether the original
> source material RFC plays is surround encoded or not.

I'm not trying to bash RFC. I'm just trying to clarify for everyone
reading here that the title and discussion about broadcasting in 5.1 is
a bit of a misnomer. Yes, they are broadcasting in 5.1. *But*, unless
someone clarifies for me otherwise, I get practically the same 5.1
effect if I take the any stereo-originated program in the world and
engage the Dolby PrologicII button on my receiver. Now I have "separate
stereo, full-range surround for all channels up to 5.1" just like RFC
claims.

Re: [slim] What's next for VortexBox???

2009-09-10 Thread aubuti

Another vote for MusicIP to be included in Vortexbox. Also, if you don't
already have a "live CD" I think it would be good to make one available.
I think you'd interest a lot more people to try it who aren't quite
ready to nuke their existing Windows or Linux installations. Even better
than a live CD would be a Vortexbox image that can run off a USB stick,
because if a live CD is tying up the only optical drive then Vortexbox
can't show off its ripping.

Re: [slim] Defection and challenge

2009-09-10 Thread chinablues

The OP's 'conclusion' post gave a good summary from his point of view,
but I have to agree with the comment from iPhone...QUALITY enters into
the picture for me. I started out on this music network quest with
Audiotron (anyone remember that?) streaming MP3's. While I was at the
computer trying to get it to work, my wife was in the sitting room
shouting 'turn that crap off'. The lowish MP3 quality offended her
ears. Then along came the Transporter & I found FLAC. Coupled with a
good amp and a pair of Kef 205/2's, this is (for me) audio nirvana. I
want a system that I KNOW is better than my ears. Just this last
weekend I culled 766 128kbs MP3s from my collection. Anything lower than
128Kbps was gone a long time ago. I'm getting old, I don't have the time
left to listen to crap.

I don't want music 'from the cloud', until as iPhone mentions, it comes
in FLAC quality.

Thus for the naive user, the first question before embarking on
networked music systems is: "Do you really spend time 'listening' to
music, or are you just looking for a nice system to give you background
noise?". Depending on the answer, you point them in the direction of
the radio or SB Networked music.

Dan

Re: [slim] 24/192 vs. 24/96

2009-09-10 Thread dBerriff

On the basis of various Sound on Sound articles and from using my modest
home studio this is my current understanding:

24 bit is worthwhile for the improved dynamic range, especially when
recording. Digital overload needs to be avoided at all costs as it
sounds nasty and unnatural. 24 bit makes life a lot easier when
recording as you can work well below the red line and still have an
adequate dynamic range for the final track.

Opinion seems divided on the sample rate but the consensus is that it
is less important than 24 bit once you get above 48 kHz. Many claim to
hear no difference.

The ADC and DAC chips to support the higher rates are readily available
and I would guess not much more expensive now, thanks to DVD players
supporting mass production to these standards. So, they get put in the
studio hardware anyway.

24 bit is probably worth while for classical music which in reality has
a huge dynamic range, but only if you have the replay system to do it
justice.

For the pop/rock/indie/electronica side of things where the music is
compressed and limited much of the time to a radio-friendly dynamic
range and frequency balance it is not something to worry about. At
least, that is my interpretation of what I have read.

Agree. I assume the tight integration of iTunes & QuickTime with OS-X
does not transfer to iTunes & QuickTime with Windows. My conclusions did
not include iTunes for the PC on the basis of the advice given in this
thread.

Back up? Definitely, at least twice in my case as I have the disk space
anyway. It was built into the conclusions. Big advantages, IMHO and
compared to iTunes, of SqueezeCenter are that it does not write to the
library, ignores the folder structure and is read only except for
playlists.

I can see that library management is a potential problem with iTunes.
Great when it works (as it has for me on my iMac) and if you are happy
with its organisational logic, a disaster when it goes wrong.

The problem with itunes is that if you do have a problem it's usually a
huge problem where it has corrupted files or more. It's a nice program
with too much overhead, doesn't work well with external hard drives and
likes to do everything it's own way. I'd much rather use dbpoweramp
