It was a grumpy start to my day, granted, but I promise, I'm not made
up.

I was off the mark with the domain complaint. I still stand by the
'apps' cargo cult complaint, and yes I too care deeply about the
community - in particularly these forums and wiki, which have now taken
a blow in terms of relevancy as people will now search for questions
about "squeezebox server" and not "SC"/"Squeezecenter". Witness the same
old questions resurfacing...

I may be a junior member, but I've taken the time to submit bugs and
assist other customers IRL with purchasing and configuring their SBs. I
just think it's a shame that Logitech's marketing nous is clearly not at
the level of the fantastic Slim Devices that I love.

Re: [slim] Firmware v130 issues with SB3

2009-09-30 Thread sweller

Thanks Millwood!

I checked the remote settings and both slim devices remote and JVC
remote were checked, unchecking then reselecting the SD remote cured the
remote issue. After that the player didn't seem to respond to screen
saver settings, although even scrolling through the player information
menus showed the player had what I'd set. I re-installed slim server
7.4.0 build 28672 and all works how it should. Not sure if a server
restart would have cured the final problem though. Many thanks to all
for your suggestions. Cheers Steve

yes. The Queen app needs the plugin with squeezebox server in order

Re: [slim] Logitech is messing up Squeezebox

2009-09-30 Thread 86atc250r

> I hadn't seen the animation on my own, thanks to FlashBlock.

Same here - I was a bit confused when I saw the first post complaining
about it!

While I don't care too much for the animation, I don't so much mind all
the recent changes in the software - if nothing else it keeps the
product interesting for me, anyway.I like everything about the "My
Apps" change save the name - which I can deal with. It puts pretty
much all the services I use in one, easy to nav spot which is a big
improvement over the way it was presented in 7.3.3

There will be some things to work out as time moves forward, but I've
been using SC since 6.5 and I believe we have come a long ways since
then - and for what I do, the system was fully functional for me then -
it's just better now. I am still very happy with my purchases - they
do everything I want and more. The family enjoys them and doesn't mind
the occasional change in software either.

Everything that makes the SB line great is still there - it may be
shuffled around a bit, but you'll get used to it & once you do, if it
were suddenly set back to the way it was, chances are the same people
would be complaining - human nature.

Well I think the OP made an rather leveled and proper observation of the
situation.

I always bookmark http://forums.slimdevices.com directly it's not
healthy to see the main site for longer periods of time.

What is more subtle and gets to you even more than codebaby ;) (at
least after a while) is these photo-model shots of beautiful people
faking that they use squeezeboxes in their stylish multi million$
homes.

And the APP thing is severely broken but It can be salvaged just move
back the radio providers like shoutcast bbc et all to the internet radio
menu.
3/4 off the things you can chose as an APP is *not* applications by any
sane mind.

We can have last-FM pandora slacker, facebook ? and such as apps this
is manageable, If you don't use any of the *real* apps you can simple
remove the APP menu from home menu and have a cleaner controller ?

[slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-09-30 Thread pippin

Here's what iPeng users have been waiting for since 7.4 showed up:

I'm are happy to announce the availability on the App Store of iPeng
1.2.

iPeng 1.2 is the third major release of iPeng and like 1.1 it will
bring you major changes that will make iPeng an even better Music
Remote.
Optimized for Squeezebox™ Server 7.4

To begin with, iPeng 1.2 is a complementary release for Squeezebox
Server 7.4 and MySqueezebox.com. It fully supports these server releases
and in many places also uses similar UI concepts.
In short: Here's what's new:

* New Look and Icon
* New User Interface handling ambiguous functionality through
context menus instead of modes.
* New MultiPlayer control page that allows for easier player
management (syncing, moving between sources,...)
* Group control for synced players.
* Player context menu bundling all player features, reachable
through the MultiPlayer control
* Context menus for the current track and tracks in the current
playlist.
* Improved management of current playlist including option to save
it.
* Quick Tutorials explain the operation of iPeng.
* Many, many details.

New User Interface and Look.

The first thing you'll notice is changed colors. But believe me, it's
not about colors.

iPeng now has a stringent UI concept that tries to do away with the
confusion around SqueezePlay menus and different button modes. iPeng's
new interface logic goes as follows:

* Every item that has more than one action attached to it does have
a Context Menu
* You reach the Context Menu through a "hold" gesture (hold an item
for approx. 1s). This will work almost everywhere (as long as there is
something to be displayed): menus, library items, NowPlaying cover,
playlist item, current player, you name it.
* Simply tapping an item will trigger the default action, most of
the time this means: descend to a lower menu.
* Clicking an Album Cover (in a menu) will immediately play that
album (there are one or two exceptions to this in places where it
doesn't make sense to play the album).

There is one exception: When viewing an Album or Playlist (that is:
anything containing only tracks) there is still the old "mode" scheme.
This is to allow you faster access to tracks for playing whole albums or
building playlists; for many users these are the things they usually do
with iPeng:

* There are the tree modes in the navigation bar that determine
what happens when you tap a track
* play plays the whole album from that track
* add adds the track to the end of the playlist
* play-next inserts the track after the current one in the
playlist.
* hold will, as always, bring up a context menu.

New MultiPlayer Control

First of all: Yes, it does scroll :-). Apart from that, the whole thing
has been completely redesigned.

* Synced players are now grouped in sync groups that are
distinguishable by the currently playing track and play state. Below
this there are the individual players and you can set individual volume
and power state of each player.

* The MultiPlayer control has an edit mode in which you can move
players between sync groups and also music sources. This can be done
through drag'n'drop or by selecting several players and clicking a
command button.

Group Control

If you select a player from a sync group, the main volume and power
controls no longer act on the individual player, but on the whole group.
Note: this is different from the "Sync Power" and "Sync Volume" settings
in Squeezebox Server since you still have individual control over each
player:

* The main volume slider will show the average volume of the sync
group. Moving the slider will change the volume on all players
synchronously. You can change the relative volume between players using
the controls on the MultiPlayer control.
* The main power button will switch power on all players. You can
still change the power state of individual players using the MultiPlayer
control.

Player Context Menu

By clicking the accessory button on the current player in the
MultiPlayer control or by holding the player you get to a player context
menu. This menu will bundle all player specific settings and features
such as

* Alarms
* Sleep
* Player name
* some plugins that act on players
* Digital Inputs (Transporter only).

NowPlaying Context Menus

The cover art on NowPlaying and the tracks in the current playlist now
have a TrackInfo context menu that allows you to access features like

* Add to favorites
* Browse by album/artist etc.
* Access similar music through Apps
* Get more Information about the track

Current Playlist

* Deleting tracks from the current playlist has been changed to a
batch delete (just try it, you will understand it).

* Also, the current playlist can now be saved.

Quick Tutorials

In several places in iPeng, features you encounter for the first time
will be explained by a short, animated tutorial.
And many more details...

* Keep Connection now really works (at least for 30min)
* WiFi will no longer be shut down as long as the A

Re: [slim] Apple Extreme/Express - best way to connect?

2009-09-30 Thread Cabe

WDS is Wireless Distribution System think of it as cell tower hopping.

Both the Extreme and Express are (in addition to N) B/G compliant so
your best bet is to set up them up to use that. Using WDS to create a
larger network for your Squeezeboxes to join.

As for the other side of things, I guess you want to make use of
Airtunes?

Best way I can think of is running a copy of SqueezeSlave on the
server, along with Airfoil - $25 http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/ -
select the SqueezeSlave application and away you go.

The concepts of the "REDO" involved in 7.4 have not been expressed
clearly to the users. Most of the changes are not that revolutionary but
the fact that you have to logon to the web service (mysqueezebox.com) to
enable stuff on y'alls SqueezeBoxServers (hence SBS/win or SBS/mac or

It's pretty easy: use the online web-browser to control y'alls local

I still also expect SBS/all installation of SqueezePlay via the web

Re: [slim] Having a few 7.4 problems

2009-09-30 Thread Flying Point

Ended up speaking to a very helpful Level #2. After about an hour of
trying different things, it would seem that snow leopard/7.4/flac files
sometimes leads to a bug somewhere in the scanning process.

In the meantime, I'm going to point squeezebox to my mp3 folder. It
worked fine. Hopefully they'll find the flac scanning issue soon.

Yes,

The niche product is fine. It also works for non-geeks.

So many here ask questions that relate to solutions rather than "waxing
Philosophical."

The more BS like that is found here, the less useful info is exposed.
The less on-target they whole place becomes.

Ignore questions/posts that are not related to "community."

It might be that your system went nite-nite during the process. Crashed
the system? Was there a symptom?

As elsewhere, I would suggest re-installing and using your power
settings to disable sleep.

My lib is a little under 10k alacs and a little under 1K "albums" and
it takes a little over 30 minutes under 7.4. The same lib under RC7 on a
VM with only 1GB takes only two minutes longer. This is on an external
NAS so your times should be shorter.

SB3 doesn't have 802.11n, so you'll need to make sure that 802.11g is
enabled.
As for WDS, that seems like a separate issue - if you bought both an
extreme and an express then I'm guessing you intended to expand your
network range and will want WDS...

[slim] Uninstalled apps showing in context menu?

2009-09-30 Thread tdnuerf

I'm defining "context menu" as that menu which appears when you press
(and hold??) the center button on the SBC or the wheel button on the
Boom.

I do not have the following apps installed:
Last.fm, Facebook, Flickr, Amazon.

And yet when I access a song's context menu, I see:
"On Last.fm Radio", "Share on Faceboo" (sic), "On Flickr", and "On
Amazon".

Note that these (unwanted) items only appear when I'm listening to
Slacker or Pandora - they don't appear when listening to my other apps
(RadioTime, SHOUTcast, SKY.fm, or radioio).

Anyone else see this?

Re: [slim] Having a few 7.4 problems

2009-09-30 Thread Benefactor

I'm in the same boat - as are a few others I'm sure.

I had a hard time completing a full music scan with the previous
versions of squeeze center, but after fighting my way through several
attempts was able to get a full scan completed.

With version 7.4 it just doesn't seem possible to complete the scan...I
don't really feel like wading through the scanning logs and
troubleshooting to figure out what the problem is right now. All I know
is that something that had worked relatively seamlessly in the past no
longer does so.

Tech support was unfortunately not as helpful in resolving my issue as
they have been in the past with other inquiries. After suggesting that
I might try to remount the external hard drive containing my music into
my main computer and seeing if that made any difference, I gave up (at
least for today).

My computer has locked up several times today while dealing with this
"upgrade"...I wish I had come to the forums first and read some of the
feedback here before I opted to install the new version of the software.
I have never even used squeeze network before, so I'm assuming the
upgrade was completely unnecessary in the first place aside from running
the newest version of the software.

Having a few problems with my Duet and 7.4. I'm running on a Mac with

(About 10,000 flacs) It crashed my system sometime in the night. When
I rebooted, everything seemed to be scanned, but the artwork wasn't
showing.

* Hit rescan and went to work. Same story. Crashed the system &

Re: [slim] Upgrade killed my SqueezeBox remote

2009-09-30 Thread Tube Nube

This is what happened to me last night.

Mine's a SB Classic, used with a MacBook Pro.

I appreciate reading the technical assistance in the post just above
mine but, frankly, I don't really understand it. I hope, when I try to
follow it that it will all make sense.

I have to say, this SB is a great product when it works, but it is SO
deceptive.
The instructions present a simple, intuitive walk through installation
process, but NOTHING has worked as presented, and everything I've done
has required technical assistance.

Same when a relative bought the Duet. Had to get a IT friend with years
experience in to figure it out. It took 2 days.

I thought I'd save a pile of money, and get a super cool product for a
song with this thing. Instead, I'm developing an aneurism.

I'm quite confident that I'll be spending $3 or 4 k on a transport
pretty soon, and the SB will end up a pile of plastic shards under the
wheels of my car. If not this time, then next.

If you don't use SN, then, no, you don't need the update unless you buy

Logitech would be well served to find the owner of the domain and
seeing that they get some kind of web page up that isn't broken and
obviously isn't related to the Squeezebox product.

Nope, nothing rhetorical about the 'why?' - I did want an answer. I

[slim] Upgrade killed my SqueezeBox remote

2009-09-30 Thread badlydrawntoy

Hi. I Just installed v.7.4 of the SlimServer software + Squeezebox
upgrade.

I own a Squeezebox II. Now I can't use the remote control with the
Squeezebox.

- I can use the web interface fine
- I can use the remote to setup the Squeezebox - obtain IP address
etc.

But I can't start, stop, navigate the menu, power on/off or anything.

I've re-instsalled the update, but still no joy.

Any way to fix this, or to downgrade? Not got a reply form Logitech
support (sent 12hrs ago)

Thanks

The domain name "squeezebox.com" is not related to the music player
line named "Squeezebox"... it actually predates that by several years,
since the domain was registerd in 1995.

If you were going there, you weren't going to a Logitech site, but
actually an advertising site, since the original owner of the domain
seems to have long ago given up their product (which was video capture
and encoding).

Squeezebox.com from 1997:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970113103357/http://www.squeezebox.com/

>From 2006:
http://web.archive.org/web/20061109041716/http://www.squeezebox.com/

I don't see any relation to logitech at all there except the "helpful"
links.

A lot of good points, and I'm sure a lot of other "SB old-timers" agree
with you on this. Unfortunately this may be part and parcel of trying to
reach a mass market (myself, I'm perfectly happy owning a niche
product).

Just fyi, I don't think that www.squeezebox.com has anything whatsoever
to do with our beloved SBs. The old home site was www.slimdevices.com,
and the new one is www.logitechsqueezebox.com. Of course, both direct
you to the same dreadful animation

That stupid 3D animated person on the website looks to be marketings
fault, apparently the developers had no idea about it until this morning
either.

Unlike with Slimdevices, the people that build the products are not the
ones who are marketing them.

As for the naming, I think the opinion is that Squeeze~~ naming was
wrong, it should have been Squeezebox ~~ when 7.0 was released.

It isn't. Exactly what is the problem you're referring to? I haven't
seen threads reporting Booms bricked by the latest firmware update, and
mine updated fine, including connecting directly to mysb.com. But in the
flurry of posts since the new release I'm sure I missed a few. If you
want help with an update that went bad then some more details are
needed. But if you just want to vent, then no details are needed.

[slim] Logitech is messing up Squeezebox

2009-09-30 Thread rh2600

NB: I write this because I have a deep respect for Slim Devices, your
products, your customer relationship. I want you to know that from my
point of view Logitech are making mistakes with this brand and they need
to sort it out.

At first I was disappointed with the 'app' fascination announced this
morning - it's cargo cult stuff - and logitech isn't the only one guilty
of trying to ape Apple - but it's certainly one that's really pushing
things to a level of absurdity...music services as 'apps' appears to be
taking the consumer proposition to a level of abstraction that is very
confusing and unclear.

The renaming of everything *again* also is a dangerous move - witness
wikis, blogs, forums - essentially the sum total of effort that's been
put into documenting, discussion, explaining, solving and developing the
Squeezebox landscape all being cast out of relevancy in terms of search
keywords etc... - some of the owned content can be updated, but the
earned/user created content out there on the web will likely never get
updated.

I've also been concerned to see that www.squeezebox.com being broken
for quite a few hours now... so I resorted to slimdevices.com which now
bounces through to logitechsqueezebox.com (which is a unnecessarily
complex domain name) - and I'm greeted with this hokey amateur 3d model
thing? Does no-one at logitech remember the MS Office Paperclip?

Seriously. The smart, intelligent, innovative brand that Squeezebox is,
is now starting to behave in hokey, cheap, bewildered and confusing
manner. It feels horrible. I'm sad to see this happen.

I realise that much of this is locked and loaded, fair enough, but
please at least shut down the 3d model thing - it's laughable... :(

Hi,

I have the same problem here. I have upgraded Squeezecenter to 7,4 and
the Squeezebox to v. 130 and since then the remote is not working
anymore. This is both the case with my original squeezebox remote as
with my later acquired logitech remote.

I still can control the squeezebox via the web UI and via my Iphone but
not via a remote...

Btw: What is strange is that I have a another squeezebox in a different
room and this works perfectly with my remotes so it seams.

Somebody can help?

Cheers,

At 1rst I was thinking of something really basic like : only the codec
used at album level, that was it !

But maybe adding some (optional) extra info like CBR / VBR & bitrates,
like you mentionned is good idea,

though I don't really see the point with "quality" if we have bitrates
(IMO).

Take your time & focus on your certification !

I agree with that Howard in its the best way to get the Transporter
exposure, but in my opinion the Avatar defeats the purpose. The
Transporter is such a niche market, it doesn't need any distractors or
detractor for that matter.

I guess it goes along with my opinion of the people that review the
Transporter. I think it would be reviewed even higher then it already is
if it didn't have a WiFi card or Ethernet port that screams that a
computer is involved.

Hey just glad that others and myself helped you in taking the step up

I personally prefer the new UI and if you don't want the apps then
don't use them, regardless of whether they are called apps, plugins etc.
they still do the same job - can't you change the home menu to display

Point to remember is that these changes and the new products are likely

Something must have happened during the upgrade. I'm running v130 on a
couple of SB2s and SB3s with no problems. Try doing a factory reset if

Do you mean a seperate sight for the sales of TP? I think it needs to
be with the rest of them so more folks are exposed to it.

BTW, thanks to you and others who finally convinced me to take the
plunge on the TP. It's now my second favorite SB device after the SBC.
Of course sound wise it's my fav.

Thank the stars, they actually found a female Avatar that could keep
her mouth shut!

Not being sexist, just stereo typing (pun intended). Speaking of stereo
typing, at least they didn't go for the Anime Porno look Avatar. But if
there are going for a human and not a unisex neutral animal or object,
then why not a Blond with a Logitech Teal Bikini? Makes about as much
sense to me.

I think its time for a separate website for the Transporter. Don't
think to many audiophiles that have enough issues of going to computer
in the first place are going to be real keen on Avatars much less
talking Avatars.

So it's probably not a coincidence that the TP isn't in the product
rotation on the home page Flash (Radio, Touch, Boom, Radio, Touch, Duet,
repeat).

Sorry, I didn't realize that your "Why?" was a rhetorical question. And
correct, as long as you connect to internet services via your local SC
server, you don't need to upgrade to 7.4. Or was the "presumably"
rhetorical as well? ;o)

Re: [slim] Firmware v130 issues with SB3

2009-09-30 Thread sweller

Thanks for your response.
I installed the version as prompted on the SC webpage - where it says a
new version is available, click here to download etc. I guess that was
v7.4.0. but the firmware was v130. I've since tried 7.4.1 but that still
gives me v130 firmware. Tried rolling back to SC 7.3.2 and the
associated firmware which all worked fine. I have a 2nd SB3 (later
logitec black version) which took the v130 firmware withoutout issue. It
seems that my slim devices SB3 doesnt like firmware v130 but is ok with
prev revisions.

current version as per SC Version: 7.4.1 - r28676 @ Tue Sep 29 04:01:53
PDT 2009
Cheers
Steve

[slim] Can't access the song tracks on Queen's Absolute Greatest

2009-09-30 Thread MacFrugal

I only get the option for the Narratives (band commmetaries) or Lyrics;
there's no option for songs on my Boom. When I installed the app I was
provided with a "configure" button - clicking the button only resulted
in making the button disappear.

In the Radio forum, it was suggested that those tracks are inaccessible
without a controller. However, the following suggests that the Boom
should be able to hear the song tracks and not the band commentaries.

> With Queen and Squeezebox you can
> -Preview Queen’s upcoming album, Absolute Greatest
> -Listen to band commentaries on tracks from Queen's Absolute Greatest*
>
> -See exclusive band photos**
> *Not available on Squeezebox Duet, Boom, Classic or Transporter®
> **Not available on Squeezebox Boom, Classic or Transporter

Re: [slim] CodeBaby on new Logitech Squeezebox site

2009-09-30 Thread gcurrie

I'm clearly in the minority, but...

No big deal to me.

I don't use the main page entry anymore, so I won't see it. I usually
browse with audio off (so I don't have to suffer through thousands of
lame-o Flash intros, wailing rawk themes, and such) so I wasn't
particularly jarred by it. As soon as the dialog popped up I clicked go
away. End of story.

I think it's a bit dumb, but I can see how a lot of mainstream folks
might think it's 'cute' or 'memorable' (the first time anyway) and
that's what Marketing likes, after all.

I think there's a large audience out there that are NOT like many of us
who frequent these forums - and I applaud moves to attract them, even if
I don't like specific changes (e.g. the poor information architecture of
Applications).

This person leaves his computer on and uses his SBs to listen to his
music or to internet radio. I understand 'some people' do different. So,

There was a bug that caused now playing to be blank on SB3 in one of the
prerelease squeezeboxservers. Are you sure you installed the released
version, or something later? Check the SC version in

[slim] Relative Newbie to Squeezebox Forums- an Appreciation

2009-09-30 Thread thenoo

As a newcomer to these forums I would like to say that I enjoy "lurking"
and have learned a lot on the Squeezebox and problems and opinions on
the enjoyment of music almost all of which I was unaware of before.

I have also been greatly helped in the setting up and operation of my
Squeezebox and music library and now would hate to have to go back to
the old system of inserting music CD's into the HiFi !

I have , however , a mild criticism of the supervision of the Forums .
It seems to me that , unlike other Tech Forums , there is a tolerance of
people "breaking into" other peoples threads with comments like "... Yes
I have a similar problem to that " and from which intro they then
proceed to talk about their problem which is frequently sufficiently
different from the OP's thread to really require a separate Post with
its own separate heading.

This habit is pretty seriously frowned upon in other Tech-based Forums
and is quite strictly policed.

What do others think , I wonder?

Re: [slim] Change for change's sake is bad

2009-09-30 Thread jarome

I looked at the release notes, and the e-mail from Logitech. I am still
at a loss of what to do with the new menu items. They certainly seem
inappropriate for my squeezeboxes. Why would I want to use FaceBook?
The default menu items should be different for the different squeeze
devices.

I do two things with my squeezeboxes and Controller: I listen to my
ripped music and I listen to Internet radio. So why do I need a MyApps
menu item to listen to radioio? It should be on the Internet Radio menu
item. Why can't I move it? Why can't I add stations to Internet Radio?
This then forces me to also add Favorites to my top menu.

The only good thing I see is the ability to install all plugins from
the Server Web page.
