I'm same way. I really want another SB3 even though I'm way too broke.
I'd love to get one before they are gone.

I really don't care about the tags or what they recommend but what I
like is to see what I've listened to over the last week, month, 6mths,
year and etc. It amazes me on how much I play my Squeezebox and also
how much I listen to certain artists. My son also influences mine as he
uses the SB3 when I'm not around. All in all it's pretty cool to see
the breakdown of your listening habits.

When connected to rhapsody through my squeezebox.com it plays 2 or three
songs of a playlist and as it switches to the next song I see the name

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling

2009-12-05 Thread aubuti

Glad to hear that things may be sounding better. As was mentioned, it is
far too easy to pick the wrong option with MP3Gain, so if that is indeed
the root cause of your problem it's completely understandable.

What would be slick is if someone adapted Robin Bowes'
apply_replaygain.pl script to deal with MP3 (at present it only does
FLAC). It's a Perl script, so it's completely cross-platform. However, I
have no idea what the equivalent of "metaflac" is for MP3s.

I think, to see the difference of a larger innodb_buffer_pool_size in
Linux, you also need to set
innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT
otherwise you're still double-buffering in the OS and MySQL.
See 'mysqlperformanceblog'

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling

2009-12-05 Thread pablolie

Thanks everybody - I think this thread inspired me to look more closely
at how I was using easyMP3gain (the only Linux alternative I know for
MP3 myself, and my FLACs have no such issues) and after using the
*analyze* feature alone, playing with it, it seems a couple of the
problem albums now are more alive.

I will actually educate myself far more on the topic and volunteer
documentation help to the open source community. There is a lot of info
out there, and forums like these full of helpful people, however there
does not seem to be a tutorial that puts it all together.

For now - many thanks everybody! I am listening to a playlist right now
that sounds far more "alive". My reservation is still about the
reversible nature of playing with MP3 tags (which I think are 100%
reversible), but not knowing enough about the audio information
modifications that were mentioned in this thread and deemed irreversible
I have mixed feelings about MP3gain... I will keep using the "analyze"
feature alone, which as was mentioned in this topic and I have verified
in another source, only writes to tags and thus is 100% reversible (I
should strongly hope).

I managed to reproduce my original problem while experimenting with SoftSqueeze
and SBS on Windows. Something is simply wrong with the font rendering/scaling.
The graphics must be provided by the server (?) because the problem follows
the server, not the player. Reinstalling the server eventually seems to make
the problem go away.

Here are screenshots of a SoftSqueeze "Transporter" displaying the same artist

incorrectly (connected to SBS 7.4.1 on Windows).

[slim] softsqueeze hangs at the end of tracks

2009-12-05 Thread Owen Emry
Hello, and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

I'm using SoftSqueeze 3.8 (on WinXP) with server 7.4.x (on Ubuntu) and have
found that playback often hangs at the end of tracks.

I see lots of options in the debug log but don't know what red flags to look
for among the reams of data. Any assistance with further debugging would be
greatly appreciated.

What I know so far:

- the player switches to "stop" at the end of certain tracks instead of
advancing to the next track
- roughly 1/3 of my tracks cause this behavior (all of my library is stored in
Vorbis (.ogg) files
- any given track either hangs with 100% reproducibility, or works correctly
100% of the time (i.e. the hang depends entirely on the track)
- the files are not corrupt, were ripped recently, encoded with mainline
oggenc, and decode just fine on my (real) SB3
- the hang behavior is the same regardless of whether the SoftSqueeze is
connected via LAN, tunneled over SSH built-in, tunneled over a Putty SSH
connection, or connected through a VPN tunnel (i.e. I don't think network
problems are involved)
- I tried the Windows server (7.4.1) with the same result, so I don't believe
it's a server problem.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Owen

Do they have RG tags or don't they? If they don't have RG tags then
SmartGain has absolutely no effect, because it doesn't know how much to
adjust the volume. If they do have RG tags, then presumably they came
that way from Amazon, and who knows how they did it. They might have

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling

2009-12-05 Thread pablolie

Meant 2005, my bad.

I have uploaded 2 files to Google that are both available from Amazon
MP3 for 99c each. They have not been touched by anything other than SBS.
I use Linux, so no iTunes intervention possible (plus I have never used
iTunes as a tool to manage my music collection).

GoogleDocs does not allow to upload MP3s, and UbuntuOne is woefully
slow today. So I'll just have to find some other way of sharing these 2
files
- Gotta Be Real by 3rd Force (Vital Force) (jazz)
- Didn't I Blow Your Mind by The Spinners (Can't Shake This feeling)
(R&B)

I will find a way to share later.

Not suggesting user error here, but owning an SB since '95 would be a
nice trick since the first player (the SliMP3) was introduced in 2001.
;o)

I have also found that RG and SG work fine for me. So I don't think
that it's outrageous that MC suggests the original files may have gotten
messed up. Do you have any of those problematic MP3s on CD? If so, I
would re-rip with good software like EAC or dBpoweramp, using their RG
facilities, and compare the RG values they produce with the values in
the file you have. They should be very close. If they're not, then I'd
certainly trust the freshly ripped ones instead of the older ones.

Btw, did the Amazon MP3 files come with track and album RG tags, or did
you add them?

I an interested to see why RG and SG don't work for you with your
Slimdevices when it works so perfectly for me. I am having trouble
believing that your files have not already been messed around with, that
your RG settings are incorrect or that there is not something else at

I don't suppose it's of any help but I use Soundforge's normalisation

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling

2009-12-05 Thread pablolie

According to this FAQ
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/faq.php

mp3gain is based on replaygain and thus equally reversible? It also
states that ".. MP3Gain does not decode and re-encode the mp3 to change
its volume. You can change the volume as many times as you want, and the
mp3 will sound just as good (or just as bad!) as it did before you
started. .."

I was listening to a large playlist that mixes jazz guitar songs with
some R&B ballads, and RG with SmartGain is not able to even remotely
bridge the loudness gap between songs. At very moderate listening
levels, several songs basically are muted. And no, none of these songs
have ever undergone any type of treatment - they were ripped using
dbPoweramp and others were downloaded from Amazon MP3.

I am looking for a way to fix this in my collection.

Re: [slim] Is This Normal?

2009-12-05 Thread buck

SB-1 G unit? Can you put a 802.11G NIC in a SB1? I have 2 SB1 units
with 802.11B NICs that I would put G NICs if I could. Or would that not
make a difference with the smaller amount of RAM?

Sorry about the thread hijack. I believe it is normal as well. I have
the SBBoom, the SB Controller and 2 SB1s. Yep, I NEED more.
Uh..maybe you should ask someone else if it is normal :-)

In my living room, there is a Radio, a Transporter and a Controller.
Since the Controller can play as well, that's three.

The Receiver, Boom, and other things are not in the living room.

Seems normal enough to me.

@havoc1 you can always give some to friends and family, that is what I
did with my SB1 and SB1-G units. I didn't want the wive to think that I
was obsessive about SqueezeBoxen.

You're right - sorry about that. The real answer is to use the plugins
page to install MusicInfoSCR. The defaults should match the box.

Which is a bit outdated. With recent SBS versions you can download and
install everything from the plugins page in the server settings, instead
of manually unzipping stuff into the application directory.

I'm speaking from memory here, but if you click the track\album
analysis buttons it just does the analysis (and stores to tags).

IF you click on track\album gain it adjusts the music\sound data. I
think it can store undo values so that you can undo some of the changes.
But I prefer not to go there...

Anyway it was easy to click on the wrong button if you hadn't used it
in a while and that was why I was mentioning being careful.

Can anyone explain when MP3gain modifies the tag and when it modifies

[slim] Sb3 & Boom Display Setup

2009-12-05 Thread mjm2705

I've had an SB3 for about 18 months and just added a Boom .. love them
both and now use Squeemote app on iPod Touch to make a great setup.

Only issue I always had with the SB3 was the now playing info
displayed. I has upgraded from a Netgear MP101 which allowed [Artist],
[Album] & [Track Title] to be visible on a 3 line display.

When I got the SB3 I tried lots of configurations to match this and
gave up (I hate too much scrolling info)... I settled on track name,
remaining time and a mini spectrum analyser on the SB3.

When the Boom arrived I noticed the image on the box showed a Boom
displaying 'Duran Duran' where I always have "Now Playing X of Y", it
also had remaining track time and the track name in large text. This
brought me back to trying all configurations of screensaver, display etc
and still no joy.

My ideal setting would allow the top left of the display to read Artist
/ Album (instead of "Now Playing"), top right would show remaining time
and main text would be track name.

Is this possible on the SB3 & / or Boom ???

If so, how?

All help appreciated.

I've uploaded 'r103'
which includes OSX 10.6 specific changes to the portaudio library.
These updates might also help the "slow to sleep" issue. The only
different between r101 and r103 is the update of the portaudio library
snapshot from r1420 to r1428. Please use r103 instead. Thanks.

[slim] Any favorites with regards RGB / Component cables.....

2009-12-05 Thread Deaf Cat

You may have guessed, I've just got a LCD screen and thinking of buying
an RGB set of cables to go from the DVDP, it's connected via composite
at the mo.

I've tried a couple of different 75 Ohm cables (Audio interconnects) as
the composite connection, they seem to make a difference, hence the
thought what do people like on the RGB / component cable front.

(No, I'm not up with HDMI stuff yet, only the TV has HDMI inputs I've
nothing with HDMI outputs )

Many Thanks,
DC

Saw these:
http://www.richersounds.com/product/component/cambridge-audio/premium-comp-2m/camb-comp-prem-2m
For this sort of price I sould definatly want to see a big difference
before spending out, can such a ££ lead make such an improvement

Any thoughts appreciated

DC

The Duet can't do this, but the Boom and Radio can through a basic line
in. The upcoming Touch will be able to do it in two ways. Either an
external USB sound card which will take a line in, or by connecting the
iPod* directly to the USB port and letting the Touch's internal server
scan the music on the iPod making it available for playback and to be
streamed to other Squeeze players on the network.

[slim] IR Overload

2009-12-05 Thread ian_heys

Apologies if this has been noted before.

I had an original SlimDevices SB3 for years and loved it.

I decided to get a couple more (now Logitech SB3's) when it became
evident that the end of their production was close.

On one of them, which I had moved to the location of the original SB3,
and I always operated the remote from less than 2 feet. I needed to
press the IR remote buttons several times before the commands eventually
"took".

I couldn't work it out and changed batteries and tried all sorts of
other remedies. I eventually noticed that if I stood back a couple of
yards the problem disappeared.

I guess the Logitech model has a more powerful IR signal or an IR
receiver that is more susceptible to overload.

Anyway not a problem for me now that I know what's going on - hope it
may help someone else.
