Re: [slim] Volume Levelling
Glad to hear that things may be sounding better. As was mentioned, it is far too easy to pick the wrong option with MP3Gain, so if that is indeed the root cause of your problem it's completely understandable. What would be slick is if someone adapted Robin Bowes' apply_replaygain.pl script to deal with MP3 (at present it only does FLAC). It's a Perl script, so it's completely cross-platform. However, I have no idea what the equivalent of "metaflac" is for MP3s. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks everybody - I think this thread inspired me to look more closely at how I was using easyMP3gain (the only Linux alternative I know for MP3 myself, and my FLACs have no such issues) and after using the *analyze* feature alone, playing with it, it seems a couple of the problem albums now are more alive. I will actually educate myself far more on the topic and volunteer documentation help to the open source community. There is a lot of info out there, and forums like these full of helpful people, however there does not seem to be a tutorial that puts it all together. For now - many thanks everybody! I am listening to a playlist right now that sounds far more "alive". My reservation is still about the reversible nature of playing with MP3 tags (which I think are 100% reversible), but not knowing enough about the audio information modifications that were mentioned in this thread and deemed irreversible I have mixed feelings about MP3gain... I will keep using the "analyze" feature alone, which as was mentioned in this topic and I have verified in another source, only writes to tags and thus is 100% reversible (I should strongly hope). -- pablolie ...pablo Server: Shuttle X27D - Ubuntu 8.04LTS - SBS 7.4.1 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet, Accuphase DP65v CD Amplifier: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] softsqueeze hangs at the end of tracks
Hello, and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. I'm using SoftSqueeze 3.8 (on WinXP) with server 7.4.x (on Ubuntu) and have found that playback often hangs at the end of tracks. I see lots of options in the debug log but don't know what red flags to look for among the reams of data. Any assistance with further debugging would be greatly appreciated. What I know so far: - the player switches to "stop" at the end of certain tracks instead of advancing to the next track - roughly 1/3 of my tracks cause this behavior (all of my library is stored in Vorbis (.ogg) files - any given track either hangs with 100% reproducibility, or works correctly 100% of the time (i.e. the hang depends entirely on the track) - the files are not corrupt, were ripped recently, encoded with mainline oggenc, and decode just fine on my (real) SB3 - the hang behavior is the same regardless of whether the SoftSqueeze is connected via LAN, tunneled over SSH built-in, tunneled over a Putty SSH connection, or connected through a VPN tunnel (i.e. I don't think network problems are involved) - I tried the Windows server (7.4.1) with the same result, so I don't believe it's a server problem. Not suggesting user error here, but owning an SB since '95 would be a nice trick since the first player (the SliMP3) was introduced in 2001. ;o) I have also found that RG and SG work fine for me. So I don't think that it's outrageous that MC suggests the original files may have gotten messed up. Do you have any of those problematic MP3s on CD? If so, I would re-rip with good software like EAC or dBpoweramp, using their RG facilities, and compare the RG values they produce with the values in the file you have. They should be very close. If they're not, then I'd certainly trust the freshly ripped ones instead of the older ones. According to this FAQ http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/faq.php mp3gain is based on replaygain and thus equally reversible? It also states that ".. MP3Gain does not decode and re-encode the mp3 to change its volume. You can change the volume as many times as you want, and the mp3 will sound just as good (or just as bad!) as it did before you started. .." I was listening to a large playlist that mixes jazz guitar songs with some R&B ballads, and RG with SmartGain is not able to even remotely bridge the loudness gap between songs. At very moderate listening levels, several songs basically are muted. [slim] Sb3 & Boom Display Setup
I've had an SB3 for about 18 months and just added a Boom .. love them both and now use Squeemote app on iPod Touch to make a great setup. Only issue I always had with the SB3 was the now playing info displayed. I has upgraded from a Netgear MP101 which allowed [Artist], [Album] & [Track Title] to be visible on a 3 line display. When I got the SB3 I tried lots of configurations to match this and gave up (I hate too much scrolling info)... I settled on track name, remaining time and a mini spectrum analyser on the SB3. When the Boom arrived I noticed the image on the box showed a Boom displaying 'Duran Duran' where I always have "Now Playing X of Y", it also had remaining track time and the track name in large text. This brought me back to trying all configurations of screensaver, display etc and still no joy. My ideal setting would allow the top left of the display to read Artist / Album (instead of "Now Playing"), top right would show remaining time and main text would be track name. Is this possible on the SB3 & / or Boom ??? If so, how? All help appreciated. -- mjm2705 mjm2705's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34755 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72247 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge
I've uploaded 'r103' (http://ralph_irving.users.sourceforge.net/squeezeslave-0.9-103-osx-bruno.tar.gz) which includes OSX 10.6 specific changes to the portaudio library. These updates might also help the "slow to sleep" issue. The only different between r101 and r103 is the update of the portaudio library snapshot from r1420 to r1428. Please use r103 instead. [slim] Any favorites with regards RGB / Component cables.....
You may have guessed, I've just got a LCD screen and thinking of buying an RGB set of cables to go from the DVDP, it's connected via composite at the mo. I've tried a couple of different 75 Ohm cables (Audio interconnects) as the composite connection, they seem to make a difference, hence the thought what do people like on the RGB / component cable front. (No, I'm not up with HDMI stuff yet, only the TV has HDMI inputs I've nothing with HDMI outputs ) Many Thanks, DC Saw these: http://www.richersounds.com/product/component/cambridge-audio/premium-comp-2m/camb-comp-prem-2m For this sort of price I sould definatly want to see a big difference before spending out, can such a ££ lead make such an improvement Any thoughts appreciated DC -- Deaf Cat Deaf Cat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=515 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72244 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

That's great! Thanks for the feedback. The Duet can't do this, but the Boom and Radio can through a basic line in. The upcoming Touch will be able to do it in two ways. Either an external USB sound card which will take a line in, or by connecting the iPod* directly to the USB port and letting the Touch's internal server scan the music on the iPod making it available for playback and to be streamed to other Squeeze players on the network. *This depends on the particular iPod. [slim] IR Overload
Apologies if this has been noted before. I had an original SlimDevices SB3 for years and loved it. I decided to get a couple more (now Logitech SB3's) when it became evident that the end of their production was close. On one of them, which I had moved to the location of the original SB3, and I always operated the remote from less than 2 feet. I needed to press the IR remote buttons several times before the commands eventually "took". I couldn't work it out and changed batteries and tried all sorts of other remedies. I eventually noticed that if I stood back a couple of yards the problem disappeared. I guess the Logitech model has a more powerful IR signal or an IR receiver that is more susceptible to overload. Anyway not a problem for me now that I know what's going on - hope it may help someone else. -- ian_heys ian_heys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2629 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72236 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
