Hi there
the main problem with computer performance is usually SLOW DISKS --
normally not a problem when streaming audio but when scanning MySQL is
used as your DB is updated.

This isn't an inherent problem with the server -- it's always a shame
but most people buy rediculously overpowered CPU's (QUAD's for example)
and load and loads of RAM when all you really need --especially for a
server is just some DECENT FAST HDD's.

For some apps you might need a QUAD processor --that's another issue -
but for any sort of server you need FAST DISKS.

Cheers
jimbo

This is interesting. I was hoping this feature was there to avoid

2010-01-21 Thread ASenna04

Thanks all for your comments.

TO make things even more complicated the new Touch will be released
soon. Reading elsewhere on this forum, it seemd to have better digital
out then the Duet. So if I do go the DAC route (seems likely), then I
might replace the duet with the Touch. The touch interface will also
help as a secondary control, the primary will be iPeng.

You value sound-quality, hence choose the alternative with the best
(for you) price/performance ratio, the Touch. That't not complicated :)
Or if you want the very best from the two worlds, keep your TP as a
digital source if funds allow. Both makes much sense to me.

There is another aspect which seems to escape many. As you said, many
seem to be of the opinion that the CDX2-2 is a better sounding transport
than say a CD5XS. Fine. Suppose you accept that. Its at a truly high
cost, but still... At the same time many (the same?) including Naim
officially I think, argue that the HDX sounds better because it provides
better data reading (rips) as it doesn't have to be done under the same
almost-realtime restrictions as a cd-transport. For all intents and
purposes I don't think the HDX does much else than EAC or dpPoweramp.
Hence by using the Squeezebox as a transport you would get better source
material to start with. Whether this would "make up" for whatever the
CDX2-2 could improve on the transport side I have no idea, but this must
be accounted for if you want to follow these arguments. Anyway, we need
to try for ourselves I think.

This has been out for a while, apparently. I found it in the app store

It doesn't have a media mode like Air Mouse does, but it has a middle

I didn't test it with SBS with username & password authentication

I figured most people run it like me, on their home network without a

[slim] to wait for the touch or install a plug

2010-01-21 Thread keif

I have a Radio and Receiver and have no local digital music storage,
using only Internet radio and Napster.

I'm therefore using mysqueezebox and have not been impressed with the
'performance' over the last wee while.
In addition I'd like to improve my access to the BBC streams.

To this end I've decided that I'm going to have to run a local server -
I'd been hoping not to have to do this.
I'm going to get a Touch, but the delay is starting to hurt.

When it does appear, will I be able to serve from it the better quality
BBC data and listen again content to the Radio and Receiver?

If this is not the case, then think I'm just going to take the plunge
and install a sheevaplug.

If using own SBS what OS - if using Windows your security s/w could be

You can test the URLs directly rather than using the BBC App. Try the
following using the Internet Radio - Tune-in box on the Web UI

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx

mms://wmlive.bbc.net.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_int_eq1_sw1

Do either of these work ?
If not - what error is shown ?
What sort of players are you using ?

I wouldn't trust anything mentioned in this forum these days unless it
comes from a Logitech employee or someone you really trust, there are
just too many rumors and premature predictions posted at the moment. Of
course, Jim might know something the rest of us don't...

I think the only truth I trust are some indications, for example what
Christopher mentioned here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71241

He clearly doesn't mention any exact numbers, just that the team is a
bit smaller. He also mentions a reorganization which might result in a
smaller team but it might also just be that they have divided/organized
the work differently. For example by letting another business unit
taking care of the hardware part. Let's just face it, we have no idea
what Logitech plans, they might just want the new organization to settle
before they increase the team again.

Ben recently posted that they have changed the licensing of the player
software and plan to strengthen the collaboration with third party
community. It does feel a bit strange to do this in case they plan to
replace the platform with something totally different:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74049

Still, as I posted earlier in this thread, an Android platform would be
pretty cool from a third party developer point of view.

Re: [slim] to wait for the touch or install a plug

2010-01-21 Thread mortslim

This thread raises bigger issues. I too only use my squeezeboxes to
access internet radio (rhapsody, etc.). I also don't have a local
server. However the implication of this thread is that there may be
reasons to have a local server other than just serving local music
files. Is that correct?

If so, could someone please describe the reasons why a local server may
be advantageous even if the customer is not interested in serving local
music files.

Also, this thread raises an issue by implication as to what I have seen
the attitude of Logitech is towards those of use who don't use a local
server. My impression is that we are treated as second-class compared
to those using a local server. The development of software seems to be
focused first and foremost on the local server and very very belatedly
almost as an afterthought on the squeezenetwork (now mysqueezebox.com).

I am sure the statistics are that the vast majority of new users of
squeezeboxes are only tied to the internet and not to a local server.
Yes, I understand that the origins of Slim Devices is local server based
but new users don't have the technical skills to set this up or do have
the skills but don't want to bother with the hassle. It is the same
reason e.g. that Apple is now transitioning from the download music
business to the streaming business with its purchase of Lala. Most
people realize that having say 100,000 tracks on your own computer is
not as good as having access to over 5 million tracks in the cloud (even
though it is not "owned"). Most people look at music now as a rental
just like you "rent" tv through your cable company).

Anyway, back to my original question - is a local server a good idea to
enhance the listening experience even if I am not interested in serving
local content?

I have my server set to scan once a day at 4:00am, takes about an hour.
I've got a couple automated tasks running around the same time but I've
never had any problems with either the scan or the other jobs affecting
each other.

I usually just browse by Music Folder if I want to listen to something
right after loading it onto the server.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-01-21 Thread flattermann

I'M HAPPY TO PRESENT YOU THE BRAND-NEW RELEASE OF SQUEEZECOMMANDER.

This release fixes some known problems / crashes and also includes some
nice new features.

It's the first SqueezeCommander release that *supports the new low
resolution Android phones like the HTC Tattoo*. Also, the support for
high resolution phones (e.g. the *Google Nexus One*) is improved.

Starting with this release, you can use *MyApps and the AppGallery*
with SqueezeCommander!
This allows the use of many more Apps than before, like e.g. Shoutcast,
RadioIO, radio.de...

Besides the already implemented Lower-Volume-On-Calls feature, you can
now also configure SqueezeCommander to *pause* the playback on incoming
calls. :)

Have a lot of fun!

And remember:
If you find any bugs or want to request a new feature, please do this
in the Tracker at:

Re: [slim] to wait for the touch or install a plug

I think you are a little unfair to Logitech. They have done a lot more
than most to provide a central services delivery model, through SN
originally now mySB.com. Mot of the competition is not yet close to
this capability.

The problem is when you need special facilities, like the BBC stuff.
If you want the iPlayer stuff, the BBC has to by their terms of license,
restrict the geographical use. That means you cannot easily have a
global centralised services approach. This only applies in certain
limited cases.

However, many forum member old school, including myself, like local
high quality replacement, for our CD collections. This is not a cloud
computing solution today - too much bandwidth required, don't want to
pay 000s for music I already own a copy of. Now this generation of
early adopter, traditional music collection users is unlikely to be the
new user generation. I expect we will see more advances in centralised
services from Logitech.

Neither work.

The URL is seemingly loaded momentarily then the player reverts to
stop/pause mode without any interaction by me. I can try pressing play
again as that URL is displayed and same thing happens - a brief
indication that it is playing (the play arrow changes to the pause
indicator briefly), then it changes back to stop/pause mode. At no time
does any content play.

If I didn't know any better, I would guess my IP is being blocked, but
why would this have changed in the past week?

Thanks for your time.

If what I also read is true clock jitter isn't so much of a problem
when transporting a digital signal from say a laptop to a transport (say

Is this because the TCP/IP protocol is better at transporter a digital
signal then the S/PDIF protocol is?

If so, why not use TCP/IP instead of S/PDIF like example 3 below?

Re: [slim] TCP/IP and S/PDIF protocols

2010-01-21 Thread DaveWr

SPDIF can transmit a very accurate signal. The 0s and 1s are all
usually quite correct. The problem is that jitter is small changes in
duration of the 0s and 1s. Since the system uses serial data any clock
variation from the source ripples through, although increasingly clever
techniques are used to suppress most of these variations. The design
approach was flawed in the definition of the interface, and not choosing
a master clock to DAC and the source (disc drive or whatever).

TCP/IP is a mechanism where data is put into packages, with error
detection, source and destination addresses, sequence numbers etc. This
type of transmission uses data that is buffered, to build up the
packages before sending, to receive packages then check on errors. In
the SB3 / Boom there is several seconds of buffered audio data. In the
good old days this type of buffer would be prohibitively expensive. CDs
needed low cost players. The key issue overall is that the DAC can have
a very low jitter clocking system, the audio data is requested in big
packets when required, and locally converted to the serial data the DAC
requires. Significantly greater accuracy in the timing of the 0s and
1s, but requires LAN technology, buffer handling, protocol processing
etc. cheap today, unacceptable in 1982 (First CD CDP101 from Sony).

Keeping the Transporter would be an option if there is a 'big'
difference between the Touch and the Transporter. But it there is not, I
would prefer to reduce the number of full size units on my HiFi rack and
just use the Touch. It is small enough to be tucked away on the side
somewhere or even kept on the DAC and used as a secondary control. The
colou screen would be much better then the Transporter's.

As for CD's for Transport, I prefer to move away from a CD player.
Simply because I find that when I have the squeezebox connected to the
Naim system I tend to listern more and more to the streamed music just
becuase it is convinient and can't be bothered to go and find the CD
from upstairs and place it in the CD player to play it even though the
CDX2 sounds better then the streamed music.

And becasue I have a CD player, I have not ripped all the CDs knowing
that I can always play them on the CD player which is better sounding.
By removing the CD player and having the DAC I will have a streamed
music that is better sounding then the CDX2. This will be the incentive
to rip all the CDs and then have them available at a flick of the iPhone
:)

Hi, Dave.

Am I correct in assuming that TCP/IP is far superior to S/PDIF when it
comes to transmitting digital audio signals?

If so, I wonder why more "audiophile" companies aren't designing their
DAC's to work with TCP/IP connections instead of S/PDIF ones?

It can't be cost as TCP/IP is standard in the extraordinarily large
computer field. Heck, Slim Devices was able to design the DAC's in their
Squeezeboxes to connect properly to TCP/IP at not much cost.

Thanks

1) reliability
If your alarm plays way too often the fallback alarm, a local server
will help

2) performance
If your menu is too slow, a local server will help.

3) feature set.
A local server will open the big world of third party applets and
plugins
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Repositories)

4) more control
Run the version you like. Try out new ones, but revert if you don't

Of course running your own 24/7 server needs more skill and time.

[slim] Help: Your player was not found

2010-01-21 Thread Wizzu

Hi,

I'm an owner of an antiquated Slimp3 device, which I thought I'd dust
off and take into use. Problem is, I can't get my slimp3 to talk to
squeezeboxserver.

Actually, it worked once yesterday, but then I powered it off (using
the remote's power button) and now, the following day, I can't get it to
work no matter what I try. For awhile there the server was listing the
slimp3 and pretended to play things when pressing play through the web
interface, but there was no audio. It did say "Now playing" and the
title on the slimp3 display. Also the remote would not work. This makes
me think that the slimp3 -> squeezeboxserver communication is failing.

However, I can currently ping the slimp3 from my server: I get a ping
response back and there's a message displayed on the slimp3. So it's not
a network issue (at least ICMP works, that is). The server and the
slimp3 are on the same network, there are no firewalls between. The
interconnecting switch is 1gigabit, but it should talk fine to the
10mbit slimp3 (and seems like it does, since the ping works).

Here's the setup details:

I have downloaded the latest slimp3 firmware and updated it. When I
start my slimp3 up, it says "v2.3".

I'm running the squeezeboxserver that comes with Debian 5 - here is the
info from the Information tab:

Version: 7.4.1 - r28947 @ Tue Oct 20 07:58:02 PDT 2009
Hostname: newcastle
Server IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Server HTTP Port Number: 9000
Operating system: Debian - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: i686-linux
Perl Version: 5.10.0 - i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.51a-24+lenny2
Total Players Recognized: 0

The /etc/default/squeezeboxserver file has:
SLIMOPTIONS="--charset=utf8 --httpaddr 192.168.1.10 --cliaddr
192.168.1.10 --playeraddr 192.168.1.10 --streamaddr 83.145.209.81"

My slimp3 player is configured with the static IP address 192.168.1.9
(there are no conflicting IPs, I checked), netmask 255.255.255.0,
currently gatewaye set to 0.0.0.0 (when it worked, it was set to my real
gw 192.168.1.253, but now it doesn't seem to make any difference -
anyway, the ping works...), and server at 192.168.1.10.

No matter what I do, the web interface keeps saying "Your player was
not found.". Any idea how to get it to talk to my slimp3? Any way to
debug the player scanning process?

Now that I think of it, the reason my slimp3 fell into disuse (many
years ago) was because of similar problems. Could it be that my device
is defective? I wish I had followed through then, it might've been
covered by warranty then...

I have an order for Squeezebox Touch, I hope I can get that to work
easier than this old piece of hardware...

Re: [slim] TCP/IP and S/PDIF protocols

2010-01-21 Thread Andy8421

Kellen,

Just to expand on DaveWr's point:

TCP/IP has flow control and error correction
S/PDIF has no flow control and embeds a clock signal in the S/PDIF data
stream

With TCP/IP (or USB come to that) the DAC can control the rate of flow
of data from the server, and uses its own local and hopefully low jitter
clock to rebuild the analogue signal.

With S/PDIF the DAC is a slave to clock recovered from the input
datastream.

Solutions for the S/PDIF problem all revolve around filtering the
derived clock in some way, and runing the DAC at an average clock rate,
rather than deriving every clock pulse separately from the input
stream.

If you are looking for DACs that can use TCP/IP and have good quality
local clocks, as DaveWr points out, the are called Squeezebox. I have a
transporter, and I still regard it as one of the better DACs out there.

I'm not familiar with Tom and James, but I am with Andy and Richard.
Just losing Andy and Richard is huge!! Hopefully you guys have moved
onto something personally interesting. You've certainly put your time
in and made your mark on the Squeezebox products.

Unfortunately, hiring contractors is the name of the game today. I'm
working as one myself now. Times have changed.

Andy/Richard/Tom/James:
I'm really sorry to hear that you no longer are going to work on the
Squeezebox. I hope you know that your work on the Squeezebox platform is
greatly appreciated, the Squeezebox platform hadn't been where it is
today without all of you. I hope you have got something else more
interesting to do in your new team(s).

Remember that you can still stay here as third party developers, some
cool plugins or applets maybe ?

It does feel a bit strange to move away existing key resources and
replace them with contractors. I guess Logitech had something more
important where they was needed, I can't wait to see what it is...

Out of curiousity, did you read this thread? Be sure you have all gain
adjustment settings disabled and the volume fixed to 100%. And you need
a digital S/PDIF connection from SB to home theatre amp. These facts of
course apply for both 7.4 and 7.5.

Any chance you are using the digital output on the one that is out of
sync? Or is there anything else different or unusual about the audio
path between that squeezebox and the speakers?

If there is some such -something- then you may be able to adjust the
delay using the *Settings / Player / / Synchronize / Player
Audio Delay* setting.
