[slim] Default player with multiple devices

2010-01-25 Thread aldente

Hi folks,

I have two devices: A Squeezebox and a Squeezebox Boom. When I launch
Squeezebox Server on my PC, it appears to default to the Boom. In the
top, right-hand corner of the screen I see "Squeezebox Boom", and if I'm
not paying attention, I music I've chosen ends up playing in my bedroom
rather than on my stereo.

Is there a way to make it default to my Squeezebox instead? Thanks in

Well I hope the sales channel - dealers and distributors are more
understanding. At best a confused market story.

No product to sell for months... no wonder Sonos etc are a growing

week back order cycles, now only radios...

[slim] Looking for Old SqueezeBox

2010-01-25 Thread rmorten

Some time ago I posted a request for an old SqueezeBox if someone had
one for sale. Pfarrell sent me a PM (which doesn't seem possible
anymore) but for whatever reason, we never connected.

If you have one of the original or second generation SqueezeBox players
that you are wondering what to do with, please let me know. I am not
fond of the new form factor and almost exclusively control my SB with a
networked connection. I do want the display; I just don't want it
taking up more than a single rack unit of space if possible (of course
if it looks like the other SB, that would only be another bonus!)

Not sure, but I'm pretty sure not.
A DD-WRT capable router might help you, though. If it's just a problem
with one device, you could wire that device to the WRT router, and put
DD-WRT into "client" mode. If it's a couple of devices, you can put it
into wireless bridge mode to do the same thing completely wirelessly
(but you will only get half the theoretical bandwidth as it's working as
two routers).
The router should run you around $30 (here's one at 'newegg'
for 29.99)

...so you might be able to skip pulling wires...

I couldn't agree more. It's one thing when the product presentation is
poor at the local Best Buy, it's quite another when the company's own
website does such a poor job of selling the product, as the OP
summarizes so well. These are the fundamentals. Troubling to see them
neglected for so long.

Re: [slim] Do I need a wireless rounter with a an iMac?

2010-01-25 Thread cunobelinus
No. You can use Ethernet, including Ethernet over mains, otherwise known as
Homeplug. Ethernet avoids issues of signal strength/drop out/bandwidth (not
that the latter three should happen if the first is OK) that you might get if
your walls are substantial or you have problems with wireless interference. But
while it's cheap to run exposed Ethernet cables all round the house, you then
have to put up with the cables; and Homeplug is more expensive to buy the
Ethernet over power adapters and hubs than it is to buy a wireless router (or
an Airport wireless base station and a non-wireless router, for that matter). A
Homeplug four port, six mains plug adapter like this

is about £75, individual mains adapters which allow you to plug in both a mains
plug and an Ethernet plug are about half that each, and you need at least two
adapters, or either type. But they do work extremely well, even for pretty ropy
wiring, provided you get the latest (and therefore fastest) 200 Mbps iteration.
That's how one of my SBs is set up, and it's flawless. The other, though, is on
an Ethernet bridge connected to an Airport Express in an Airport network. That
works OK now, too.

I'm sure the EOL'ing of the display was no surprise. I suspect the
issue wasn't bad program management forsight but unforseen software
issues/poor SW team management. If the hardware shipped when it was
apparently ready, there would be no problem. However, the hardware
shipment has been held up by continuing SW development work performed by
a pared down SW team bolstered by contractors.

Re: [slim] Logitech marketing confusion

2010-01-25 Thread aubuti

I am also astounded by the disarray of Logitech's SB web presence.
www.logitechsqueezebox.com was created as the successor to
www.slimdevices.com, and had links to the SD online store. Only a few
months later all sales -- and apparently all web development attention
-- were moved to the mother ship at www.logitech.com. That in itself is
not necessarily a problem. But I don't understand why a few months later
they still have not set up the correct redirects, consolidated
information, or at least taken down the stuff they're not maintaining
like the old SD store. And it was this way, or worse, all through the
holiday buying season.

[slim] Logitech marketing confusion

2010-01-25 Thread bruce

I have always appreciated Logitech's efforts to make Squeezebox a more
mass-market product, but their current marketing is likely to confuse
the heck out of anyone who isn't already a devoted Squeezebox follower.
Others have written about the pathetic Squeezebox displays at retailers;
I'll just address online marketing, which Logitech presumably controls:

- There are completely different descriptions of the Squeezebox product
line on logitech.com and logitechsqueezebox.com (which is where you get
when you google "squeezebox").

- Logitechsqueezebox.com contains a decent overview of the product line
(though without all the details you need to differentiate between
products; you need to be a forum-reading geek to get those).
Logitech.com doesn't; it just describes the individual products.

- Neither site gives an estimate for when the Touch and other future
products might be available. (Don't even get me started on the idiocy of
discontinuing the flagship product months before the replacement is
available.)

- Logitech.com lists online retailers for each item, but it says the
Touch is in stock at 2 of the 3 retailers. Of course once you click
through to those retailers, you see it's out of stock, and one retailer
even shows an image of the wrong product.

- Logitechsqueezebox.com has a link to "Online Store" which contains no
products. (Reminds me of traveling to Cuba.)

It's not easy to market a product that combines the worlds of audio,
computing, networking, and open source software. I admire Logitech for
trying and am happy to cut them some slack in their product design and
messaging. But the confusion in basic sales techniques is inexcusable.

My SB3 will sometimes turn itself on when I log out of my server
including when the device and/or the web interface are not used. It

has happened on my former and current set-up (both PC/Windows7) and with

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-01-25 Thread mweb

I've installed squeezecenter server, the srvrpowerctrl plugin, and 4
instances of squeezeslave on my pc with an maudio delta 410 sound card
to evaluate using squeezecenter/squeezeboxes for my home's audio
distribution. I'm using ipeng to control it. Once everything is up and
running it works great.

My problem is at startup and after the pc comes out of standby. I have
the following in a batch file that runs at startup:

@ECHO OFF
cd c:\squeezeslave
START /min squeezeslave.exe -r10 -o9 -a20 -k10 -m00:00:00:00:00:01
START /min squeezeslave.exe -r10 -o10 -a20 -k10 -m00:00:00:00:00:02
START /min squeezeslave.exe -r10 -o11 -a20 -k10 -m00:00:00:00:00:03
START /min squeezeslave.exe -r10 -o12 -a20 -k10 -m00:00:00:00:00:04

When I go to the web interface or ipeng, I cannot play music. It shows
that music is playing, but there is no sound, the track periodically
restarts, and pause does not function. It starts working only after I
go to each of the players and press next and/or previous track and then
play. It works great after that and the same issue occurs on initial
power up and coming out of standby.

I don't know if I have a squeezeslave setting incorrect, a server
setting is wrong, or if this is normal behaviour when using a software
player?

I also hear a loud noise out of the speakers when the pc goes into
standby. I don't have a method to power down the amps and wondered if
somehow disconnecting the squeezeslave instances or lowering their
volume prior to standby might help.

Thanks for any help.

Re: [slim] Cannot open file error resolved

2010-01-25 Thread Gspon

Jcharmella, you are my hero of the year

I've tried everything:
New FW, reinstall SC, Reset Hub, priorisation of IP adresses etc. etc.
etc.

I nearly gave up... and then I saw your post.

I changed the setting in my D-Link DIR-825 from "Auto 20/40" to "20
MHz" and now it works just fine.

I hope this will also be read by the Logitech Support.

Thanks

NB: Does anybody know why?

Re: [slim] I'd Like to Listen to Television Audio on my Boom

2010-01-25 Thread funkstar

There are a few pretty complex ways to get this working, and one simple
way, but no I don't think there are any audio only streams of TV
stations (not that I've ever heard of anyway.

The simple way would be to take the audio output of a cable or
satellite box and feed it to the Booms line input.

The complex solutions involve TV capture hardware on a PC and several
layers of software to extract the audio. All possible, but not easy.

[slim] I'd Like to Listen to Television Audio on my Boom

2010-01-25 Thread PequaFrog

I used to have an old Radioshack radio that had TV Band on it. I would
fall asleep listening to Letterman or the local news or something.
It seems to me with all we can access, Television Audio shouldn't be
that big of a deal.

Does anyone know of a way to listen to Audio from Network (or cable)
Television stations.
Are there URL's that just stream audio?

thanks very much!

Re: [slim] New Server

2010-01-25 Thread funkstar

You don't need to remove the SBS install on the NAS, they two can live
on the same network quite happily, you will just get the choice of
connecting to either when the Boom first starts.

[slim] New Server

2010-01-25 Thread astroman

I have bought a new Mini PC (Acer Veriton) running XP to use as an
"always on" network music server together with my Buffalo 500gb NAS
drive.

As this computer is fresh out of the box I would welcome any advice on
which applications I should install/need bearing in mind that it will
only be used as a server. I currently use i-tunes with the library on
the NAS so I assume i-tunes/squeezebox server, on that subject, should I
uninstal my current squeezebox server from my other computer on the
network - will they conflict if I don't?

I currently have Squeezebox Boom which works very well and hope soon to
add a Squeezebox Duet.

Chris

Exactly! Life is too short. Anyone read the fine print of every web
site or that of credit card terms?
One of the news programs here in the US did a story on the credit card
industry as a whole. Included was a segment on the "terms & conditions"
of major credit cards.
Even lawyers had trouble determining and interpreting what these credit
card agreements actually meant.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-01-25 Thread flattermann

I’VE JUST UPLOADED SQUEEZECOMMANDER 0.9.3.1 TO THE ANDROID MARKET AND TO
SLIDEME.ORG.

Version 0.9.3.1 is mostly a maintenance release that fixes some bugs
found in version 0.9.3.

The download window will now show more infos about the current download
(speed/ETA). Furthermore, you now have the option to configure the
download path and filename format on your SD card for Music downloads
from your server.

If you like Squeeze Commander, please give me a good rating.

If you find any bug/problem, please report it in the SqueezeCommander
Tracker (http://www.squeezecommander.com/trac) so that I can fix it
ASAP.

Since you don't pay for the software you have little option anyway.

You have bought a Squeeze XYZ. It's either MySB.com or use the
software.

And have you ever truly understood those terms ? without an degree in
law ?
To compound these matters is this license agreement localized to where
i'm at ,usually this boiler plate eula is written for the US market and
might not apply in 100% to me.
Maybe logitech owns my soul, I have not read the fine print ?
Should I wash Andy's car in the weekends ;)
