Re: [slim] Digital output level for Duet and Touch

2010-07-19 Thread Phil Leigh

There is no "level" in the conventional sense. There is just the
bitstream - the sample value numbers ripped from the CD. At max vol
(and no replaygain) all units simply send the numbers. The DAC
interprets the numbers.

level and replaygain simply alter the value of the numbers.

So yes they will be identical "level" into the same DAC - and the cable
is irrelevant.

Nice. But is there a way to NOT have a rotated keyboard overlaying the

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-07-19 Thread pippin

Update: #2 is not going to happen because the changes in the UI are too
big for a universal app, the unified approach I had simply is not good
enough.

Local caching of "all relevant information" doesn't necessarily speed
up things, I'll cache more in the future - with both iPeng versions -
but speed really depends on your server.
It also does not necessarily depend on library size, except for
"search".

Are you looking for really great sound quality ?
Is the price of this lightweight computer important ?
Do you won't be able to see what's playing when you are in the lounge
?
Do you want to be able to change what's playing when you are in the
lounge without the need for a separate keyboard in the lounge ?

If the answer is yes on all these questions, I think you can forget the
idea of an embedded Atom or ARM machine. What you need is either is one
of three options:

Option 1:
Get a commercial network music player such as a Sonos solution or a
Squeezebox. Sonos might cause you less setup/maintenance trouble while
a Squeezebox will have the advantage when looking at price, features
and sound quality.

Option 2:
Get an iPod, iPad or some other portable device with music locally
stored on the device and a docking station connected to the
amplifier/speakers where you put it when you like to listen to music.
You would probably have to sync it with the bedroom computer when you
want to add new music, at least in the case where you select and Apple
product. The advantage with this solution is that you will also get a
portable player that can be used when you leave your home.

Option 3:
Get a simple UPnP based network music players, they are usually cheaper
than Squeezebox, Sonos and similar more advanced solutions and they
usually doesn't produce the same sound quality and library browsing
features. Still, it might be an option if the price is more important
than everything else.

Sure, you can build your own Atom or ARM based device if you think
that's fun but I bet it's going to be more expensive and won't produce
as good sound quality as the above options. However, if you answered No
on one of the questions above, an Atom/ARM solution might be worth
considering.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the main advantage of streaming
compared to NFS and similar protocols is if you like to synchronize
audio on multiple players.

Yes, a multiple player setup, by nature, requires some sort of
'client/server' protocol. NFS and SMB are going to require a lot more
work on the client side: neither addresses the database itself. I see
no benefit to such a process other than moving some work from userspace
to kernel space.. but the code to serve files is actually HTTP: which is
well understood and easy to implement... so whether a file is moved via
nfsd or an http socket really makes no difference.

And, again, using just NFS/SMB, you have no shared database.

SBS 7.6 (the current dev snapshot) uses inotify on Linux.. no need to
rescan to find things. The kernel sends it an inotify event and SBS
knows where to look for the additions/changes.

Which is what SBS does (and more, but more on that later).

As for not being interested in multiple players: I am sure most people
in this forunm said that at one time, and now have several
squeezeboxes. I lasted a couple months before I had to get another.

No, it's not. there is more to things than delivery mechanism. If
that is truly all you care about: the Squeezeboxes make HTTP requests
for files that are sent via HTTP.

HTTP is a better protocol for "can I have this file?" than either SMB
or NFS which are MUCH more complicated and contain code that is
entirely irrelevant to simply sending a file.

If you have s single player and think you can find an off the shelf ARM
embedded machine with decent sound output, then go for it.

If, however, you ever add a second player.. your method would not
scale, It would not allow syncronizing the players, you would have to
hobble together your own UI (or have to use a netbook as a remote...)

Squeezeboxes don't have that scaling problem. They scale very well,
they can be synchronized or not.

Re: [slim] Streaming vs direct file access

2010-07-19 Thread audio1

Thanks for your comments snarlydwarf and funkstar,
As I look towards updating my music playback system in the near future,
I want to thoroughly understand the fundamental configuration options.
It appears to me that central to the choice of
hardware/software/configuration is whether you want a single player or
multiple players.

snarlydwarf;562690 Wrote:
> if the player is sufficiently fat, it could make its own index by
> scanning files.
Yes, the major Linux audio player applications do create their own
databases. Amarok2 uses MySQL for example, while Banshee uses SQLite,
and Exaile uses a unique database format. A shortcoming of this is
that the databases are not dynamic; they must be refreshed manually.
I'm not interested in multiple players, but if I was, it's possible to
configure multiple players (assuming they're all the same type) to
share a common database/configuration directory on the network, making
the database common to all players.

snarlydwarf;562690 Wrote:
> there is no NFS or SMB API for "please show me all the tracks with genre

Likewise, there is no streaming API for "please show me all the tracks
with genre 'Foo'".
But this is slightly off-topic to my original question, which related
to the delivery mechanism of the media file to playback device.

snarlydwarf;562690 Wrote:
> if you only have one client, why even bother with NFS: just attach the
> hard drive directly to the "player".
Yes, I take your point that it's somewhat overcomplicated to have a
single player access its music store over a network.
The reason I mention network connectivity within a single-player
environment is that I envisage using a "lightweight" computer for
playback duty in the lounge room - maybe a small Atom machine, or ARM
embedded device, or even Android tablet,
but I envisage using a conventional personal computer in the study or
bedroom as the ripping/acquisition machine. Obviously one of these
devices would have the music storage drive connected locally, and the
other would access this drive over the network.
Wait ... there's a third scenario - a separate NAS which is accessed by
both the ripping computer and playback computer.

In the 2 scenarios where my (single) playback computer is NOT connected
directly to the music storage drive, I continue to wonder about the
technical merit of generating an audio stream.

Please discover that the web interface's speed is a function of the SBS
machine's speed and a "native GUI client" is available.

Your quote "allow for updating and rebuilding, access only the media by
itself from the server but keep everything else local" is excactly how
SBS works. I have several different copies of SBS running that point to
the same music (or sub-sets of the same music.)

If you are not happy with performance, try a faster machine or an older
machine running Vortexbox that points to the same "media by itself" and
isn't burdened by other tasks.

Also: what is "fullsize cover art?" Most of the available art is at
most about 512 square. Do you want glamour shots of your sister?

Something like a Qnap TS-509 Pro would rung SS very well, and there is
a ready made package that you just select via the web interface and it
gets automatically downloaded and then installed. Not SS by itself but
also a "wrapper" packages that does all the environtment setup and

Why is there no native fat client for the SS? Something like iTunes,

I think that the Web interface is really slow and never can't be as

I mean something that can also act as a small Internet device and can
link wirelessly to my main computer rig. That's what was so nice about
the Nokia devices, although I agree it seems they haven't made much of
a splash in the marketplace.

I still use wired phones at home, and work pays for my wireless (I
don't have a choice in what they give me). So buying a 'droid or
something like that doesn't seem real cost-effective for something like
this.

[slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-07-19 Thread bluegaspode

Hi guys ! Today is the time to officially announce the availability of
'SqueezePad' - your iPad App to control your SqueezeBoxen from the
iPad.
Avaible on the iTunes Store here:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/squeezepad/id380003002

This version 1.1.0 gives you the following features:
- switch players instantly
- see cover art of the currently playing song for each player
- control volume and play/pause of each device
- skip or rewind the current song
- navigate through the menus of the player
- its the 'original' menus as you already know from your devices, so
you'll find your way instantly
- swiping right gets you up in the menu hierarchy
- long touch on the title brings you back to the home menu
- touching the album art icon starts playing the album

The next version 1.2.0 is finished already by the way. Depending on the
review speed of Apple soon you'll see an update with the following
enhancements:
- long touch a menu-item brings up the context menu (if available) -
this allows you for instance to put songs/albums to the end of the
current playlist
- long touch the big album art on the right brings up the context menu
for the current playlist item
- album and songlist now have an index for faster navigation
- you can see the current playlist for the current player under 'my
music' (it's the playlist menu as known from the Squeezebox-Touch)

By the way: this very first week you'll get the App in the iTunes Store
for a special 'Early Adopter' price.
I did my best at testing everything thorougly but of course I can't
foresee the huge amount of environments where Squeezeboxen are
operated.
Fixing bugs as fast as possible will be my highest priority!

[slim] Digital output level for Duet and Touch

2010-07-19 Thread tonyptony

When the players' digital voume control is set to max, are the digital
outs for both the Duet and the Touch (coax RCA for both) at the same
level? That is, will they produce the same volume (within .1 or .2 dB)
when fed into the same system with the same cable?

I'm not sure if there is some mail problem but the reason you can't
access the LuaFileSystem page is baecause it doesn't exist yet. Links
to non existing pages tries to open them in edit mode which requires a
user with confirmed e-mail.

Make sure the mail isn't lost as a spam mail, automatically generated
mails like this can sometimes incorrectly be detected as spam mail.

1. Yes

2. The license is bound to your Google Checkout account. As long as you
use the same account for the Market, you can reinstall the App for free
after a factory reset or if you get a new phone

3. I'm expecting the ordering process to be secure i.e. strongly
encrypted. But I couldn't find something about this topic in the
Android Market Help.

BTW: You can add your Credit Card or create a Google Checkout account
through your PC ( https://checkout.google.com/ ).
In this case, you do not need to enter your Credit Card details on your
phone.

Some things never change. Growing up I had the job of occasionally
fixing the TV remote which would fail in the same way. The difference
was that the emitter was a a small speaker rather than an IR emitter.
It was easy to see if it was failing because you could hold it up to
your ear and listen as you pushed buttons to see if it was working.

An alternative to the JVC remote would be a Direct TV remote. I
managed to replicate most funcitons from the remote. The appropriate

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2010-07-19 Thread FreeMinded

Hi all

I just got myself a Receiver today to add to my existing SqueezeCenter
Setup consisting of an Synology DS-107+ running the SB Server, a SB3
and SB Boom.

For setting up the brand new Receiver I connected (by wire) the laptop
running Net-UDAP (on Kubuntu 10.04) and the receiver to a spare router.
So they are on the same subnet. The receiver seems to be in init mode
with the red light flashing slowly.
But running discover in Net::UDAP doesn't discover the device. Actually
nothing at all seems to happen. I immediately get a new line with the
UDAP> prompt. List shows an empty list.

As I'm running (K)ubuntu there shouldn't be a firewall in the way. I
didn't find a way to test if the port 17784 is really open. netstat
shows the port like this
udp0 0 0.0.0.0:17784 0.0.0.0:*

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,
FM

Well, it's just my opinion that the new schema isn't going to happen.
It certainly seems very unlikely at this point. Nobody at Logitch has
said so yet - maybe someone still has some hope that it can be done at
some point in the future.

They do occasionally review old bugs and re-target and re-prioritize
them, but it doesn't happen terribly often. Most often when a new
software release is put out, which is only a couple times a year and
now likely to become less often unless a new SB product is released
that requires additions to the server. The trouble with the 86 open
bugs that have been lumped into the new schema work is that they're
unlikely to be looked at.

Seems small bugs lately get the least attention of all. It's only the
bugs causing the biggest stink among users calling into customer
service that get much attention.

Funny that you mention that. I just recently (last few days) updated my

followed the instructions. From what you are saying everything should be

Re: [slim] Remote dead on my Classic

2010-07-19 Thread Eeyore69

Schizophonic,

Have you tried calling Logitech support about the problem. Many people
here, including myself, have called them and asked about replacing the
remote and asking how they can purchase one since they are no longer
shown on the Logitech website. If you are nice enough, sound contrite
and just ask how you can control your SB Classic without a remote they
will generally send you one free as a "one time" consideration. But you
may have to beg and plead since they are no longer being made and are
running out of them; I would assume that they would need to keep a
certain number for SBs that are still under warranty.

Call soon and good luck,

Eeyore

Re: [slim] Why can't I play every song from 1984...

Jim,

Maybe off-topic but ..

Since the new schema is not going to happen then shouldn't all
'deferred' bugs be revisited and if suitable, made live for fixing.

'Suitable' is arguable, and probably should be 'set' by Logitech.
Clearly we can't expect the new schema by 'stealth' so difficult
problems and significnat new features would not be suitable.

However, getting some of the smaller bugs reopened and fixed should be
acheivable ??

The 'Year' issue wouldn't be top of the list, and may not even make the
cut. (I can use CustomBrowse at home, so it's only a problem when using
tinySC at GF's).

[slim] Private Messages Storage Limit

2010-07-19 Thread iPhone

I can no longer send PMs because the storage limit has changed from 500
to 50. I believe this happened once before and was restored back to
500. Is this temporary again or a permanent change? I would hate to
have to print some 100 messages I would like to keep for their
information, SSH, and Patch value. My PMs have become a resource since
the Slim Devices URLs went away. The Logitech web pages are geared
toward marketing and sales and not technical and audiophile.

Wondering

Of course, a bigger screen is always nice (because you can e.g. see
more list items on a page). ;-)

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-07-19 Thread hendrikmd

Does Squeeze Commander work and is usable on a SE X10 Mini?

I am asking because this one has a very small screen (240 x 320).

Did anyone tried it?

I have not bought the phone yet, so I would like to know it upfront.

Thanks!
