Re: [slim] SoftSquueeze
Thanks for this. I investigated some more and it was my firewall objecting to some upgraded component. So SoftSqueeze is well again. I did look at SoftPlay once before. It is some App for a controller I do not have. I got the impression at the time that there is supposed to be some s/w emulator for that controller for the PC, and that perhaps the idea would be to run that and have the App on that. I did not invest a lot of time and could not understand the components that might be required. A more relevant question is perhaps this: when I am sitting at my computer (to listen to SoftSqueeze), I am never too far away from my browser. And I often use my browser anyway to select music for my SoftSqueeze to play. Is there no way that the SBS browser interface could play the music via the browser, rather than a separate component (like SoftSqueeze or SqueezePlay)? That would also do away with the less-than-user-friendly notion of the various soft players showing up on every user's browser, when mostly, really, users are just interested in controlling their own player. -- ovonrein ovonrein's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2130 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85936 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Favourite alarm
I was programming the alarm on a SB2 player via the browser. Set up all the parameters, then asks what sound I'd like. You get a long drop down: Current Playlist, Favourites, Playlists, ... So I select BBC6 from my Favourites. The alarm fails and rolls over to the backup beeps. Looking at what happens reveals that a curious URL (~/mediaSelector/~?) is inserted instead of the BBC6 URL. Am I missing some component/configuration/etc? Thanks. Re: [slim] Support for Moodagent
MusicIP still works very well with Squeezebox Server, and you can add the Spicefly Sugarcube Plugin to enhance it even further. Moodagent still does not have a Desktop app (they have a profiler, but that's no use on it's own). They would need a proper desktop app (which they said was coming a while back) or better yet, a headless app or license their technology to SD/Logitech, and also support additional formats like flac, for this to work like MIP does now. You probably need to make a request to the Moodagent folks first. Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...
A better Controller, along the lines of the Sonos Controller 200, might make some sense, but I'm not sure how much of an impact it would make as a product. Nobody is going to buy a $200 Controller for a $130 Radio/Alarm Clock. Logitech long ago decided to aim low with the Squeezebox product line and the Radio is the logical endpoint of where Logitech wanted to take Squeezebox - an inexpensive player for the masses that doesn't require being hooked up to the increasingly rare home audio system. The only real direction left for them is to lower the price point. They've pretty much painted themselves into a corner. The marketing of the Squeezebox product line has been abysmal from the day they bought the company. But again, that's just IMHO. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85982 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] RJ45 (or WiFi) SoundCard does it exist ?
Both Ethernet and WiFi have significant latency, so you will not find any normal sound cards with this capability. The Squeezebox (in all its permutations) is the closest you get. Good for music and radio, but you don't want to use it for an application that requires perfect synchronization between video and audio, for instance. There are probably some proprietary wireless solutions out there, but I don't know which. If you want a wired connection to your sourd card, why don't you simply go for USB or FireWire? Both have latency (as have all sound cards), but much more predictable and controllable than any TCP/IP-based connection AFAIK. -- Soulkeeper -that is not dead which can eternal lie. and with strange aeons even death may die.- touch + duet + boom + radio / wrt160n/dd-wrt / sbs 7.5.1 or higher/win7(32b)/avira free Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85991 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I think Logitech could greatly increase the sales of all their devices if they built a better remote for the units not including the Duet of course. Now I know you can buy the Duet remote and pair it will the other units but I think they need to build a better standard remote. The line of site just kills the remote use, and honestly there isn't really a point in having a remote if you have to be so close to the unit. They should create a new remote with a simple screen or they could even do without a screen if they just increase the range and use a better form of radio transmission. [slim] Squeezebox classic problem since latest upgrade
Hi, I recenetly upgraded the squeezebox server to the latest version which I think updated the firmware on my squeezebox classic which has made the text scrolling much smoother. But I've come across a problem, I use a linux box to host the server which I send to sleep overnight using rtcwake and when the box wakes up the classic doesn't automatically connect back to the server, it has the screen which is looking for a server, pressing the power button instantlly shows the clock and all looks normal. Is there anyway around this as it would be nice to have the old behaviour where when the server wakes back up the squeezebox connects as before. I hope that makes sense! Mnyb;614595 Wrote: ? I was under the impression that majority of the eventual improvement is in the increased bith depth ? As this would increase the signal content that we stand a chance to hear. I know what a brick wall fillter is, but this is nowdays only a factor during recording then the frequency must be high to avoid that,. But for playback at home most modern DAC's have massive oversampling so for playback this is not really a problem anymore. For any kind of oversampling to occur without gross errors, there needs to be a very sharp low pass filter (usually done in the digital domain). There is nothing quite like this high order, low pass filter in natural acoustic spaces, which is why low sample rate PCM recordings always sound like something's wrong with them, IMO. The counter argument is that our ears have the bandwidth limitation, so that is doesn't matter if the reproduction system has a compatible bandwidth limitation. The reason I think otherwise is that we humans have a very non-linear perception of audio amplitude, and we can detect wrong timing of transient events even though we may not have the corresponding ability to detect continuous high frequency tones. For a purely linear system, this would be nonsense, since bandwidth and timing resolution are inextricably linked as reciprocal quantities in linear signal processing. Nevertheless, it is my conjecture that a higher than 20kHz bandwidth audio channel is necessary to avoid that our sensitive, non-linear ears pick up disconcerting, not-found-in-nature timing cues that cause us to identify the music source as electronic, unnatural and perhaps even fatiguing for long-term listening. Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...
I think we have covered what devices might or might not appear. What do you think Logitech should do to keep the product alive and profitable? I think we need to realize that in order for the Squeeze-product-line to give us audio-pleasure, it needs to prosper. And mass market is where the money is for a company like Logitech. If the line prospers, there can be ressources for good sound quality and advanced features. To me there are three important things: 1. Make it work as stand alone player. The touch has a server built in. But it's hardly good enough. It should also support files that are on the network as well as directly attached. Having to have a server/(Powerfull-)NAS/PC of some sort running to listen to music keeps a lot of people away. Streaming services ofcourse help this a lot. 2. Make it easy to set up. Setting up a wired stand alone Touch should be no more difficult than setting up a SONOS. 3. UPNP. Make a great, free UPNP server. People will install it and eventually realize that native Squeeze-products will give them more than the stock UPNE-ones. 4. Marketing. Sell the damn stuff. Its actually good products. Afordable whole house audio ranging from cheap bathroom quality audio to audiophile quality-gear. That is unique. But Logitech chooses to just show a boring list of anonomous porducts on their website. 5. If the Touch cannot support the server decently, sell a server. Something like squeezeplug. Plug it in: network, usb-disk and power, ready to go. Logitech-branded!! Easy way to point to a network share is of course also mandatory, but it adds to the geekyness. Plug and play is the way to go. Ok, that was more than three ;) Someone could also suggest that this i a good time for Logitech to sell off the productline to some other company to develop it further.
