Great post and I agree. I for one will stick around as I do use mainly
the offline functionality.

Would support an offiline fork as I can. I guess the fork doesn't need
to happen immediately as LMS may still be supported in bug fix mode by
the Logitech guys.

We also need to think about what the closed source parts of the firmware
are and if we need it? Is it essential stuff? I don't know?

Re: [slim] So will there be any new products with Digital Outs.....

2012-08-30 Thread lrossouw

You can do this pretty much with any small form factor pc. You could
slap together a small silent PC with rapsberry pi with digital audio out
via USB sound for probably $100. You could run linux and
squeezeslave/squeezeplay on it and then you have a squeezebox with all
the regular offline music capabilities. No screen, but you could run it
to your TV and that should give you a nice big screen. Use an app on
your phone for a remote though.

backup for yourself is of course ok as long as you don't re-distribute
 it.

Why would that be? I can understand about the firmware. If it contains
closed source parts, then no, we cannot redistribute it. LMS is another
matter. This is open source, and everyone has the right to redistribute
it. The name might be a problem. Certainly Logitech Media Server is
not allowed, because it contains a trademarked name. LMS might be
allowed. The old name Squeezebox Server might be allowed. Whilst
Squeezebox is registered, using it as part of a name is not necessarily
not allowed, since it is software to serve a Squeezebox (but this
explanation might be pushing it).

(Interestingly, the name Squeezebox is also registered as Adult sexual
aids, namely, artificial vagina; and medical apparatus used for the
treatment of erectile dysfunction)

In fact, if Logitech takes a step down in the development, transforming
this into a true community project might have some positive sides. A lot
of open bugs are in the open source code, and these can finally be fixed
in a community version.

Not an expert here, but I think the firmware contains Linux, drivers for
the (touch) screen, drivers for the sound card, and codecs for the
different sound formats.

Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?

2012-08-30 Thread Squeezemenicely

There is no reason to toss the SBs out of your home yet.

Local playback will always work via a local server, if newer NAS are not
supported, simply run LMS on a MiniPC with something like squeezeplug.

The real problem is, online functionality. Will online services continue
to work. Like Spotify etc.

Also if one was planning to get more players to set them up around the
house, does one really want to invest into an extinct productline?
The really stupid thing is that the new player will not be compatible,
syncable with the old players - which is the biggest problem.

I for now am happy with my squeezeboxen, but yes I wonder what will
happen once one of my boxes breaks down or functionality is limited.

For me there is no real alternative to the SBs at the moment. Maybe
Sonos will finally update a player and get up to speed, but probably
not. Why should they, they are moreless the only ones on the market.

Who knows maybe in a few years when all our boxes have died, we will
only have Minipcs running squeezeslave, or ithingies with iPeng - then
none of the streaming companies will get our cash...

I believe this may be the reason why Logitech have killed the SB. It is
actually too much struggle around the product line, this forum being one
big evidence :-)

For those who likes to fuzz with computers/NAS/network/the like, why not
a dedicated PC/Mac at your musical system? And a simplier solution (like
the new radio) for those who prefer to listen to music?

It IS said that the new radio kan pick the music from your computer, so
one kind of LMS must be there. Maybe something simplier and that
really works?

Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?

2012-08-30 Thread simbo

I envy those who feel content to let their Squeezeboxen plod along with
local access and limited functionality. Naturally those who are
concerned by the potential loss of online services are most likely to be
those who use them currently, but I think for many of us our
expectations are slightly different...

One of the things that initially appealed to me when I got my first SB
was the -extensibility-. When the first Squeezeboxes hit the shelves
there was little notion of online streaming services, social music
services and the like. The amazing thing about the Squeezebox line has
been it's ability to adapt to the changes in the way we listen to music,
and to allow existing SB owners to benefit from these changes.

Even now, Rhapsody and Spotify won't be the last word in online music
services and we're likely to see new and novel services appear in the
future as the music industry (finally) comes into the 21st Century.

What -has- changed now, is that we can't (smugly) rest on our laurels
knowing that our Squeezeboxes will reap the benefits of these changes,
thanks to a savvy purchase oh-so-many years ago and some funding that we
can't really claim our initial purchase to have supported.

My expectations of the Squeezebox remain the same, even in the face of
this news, but now we can't rely on Logitech to meet those expectations;
it falls to us as Squeezebox users. I would genuinely like to be
involved, in whatever small way, in keeping the Squeezebox alive.

Mostly because I'm buggered if I'm going to fork out for a replacement.

Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?

2012-08-30 Thread Grumpy Bob

Well, my usage of my squeezeboxes is variable.

- The Squeezebox Radio in the bedroom is almost exclusively used to
listen to BBC Radio streams, and only occasionally other streams or my
music collection.
- The Squeezebox Radio in the kitchen is used for BBC Radio, but also to
stream my music (more so than the bedroom SBR)
- The Squeezebox Touch connected to the HiFi is principally used for
playing the music collection, and only occasionally for playing radio
stations. (I also have an SB3 recently replaced by the Touch).

So, for me, I will puddle along until such time as the SBRs can no
longer receive the radio streams I like. Since I don't use MSB.com, this
would likely be a consequence of LMS plugins not being updated to match
changes to the radio streams. At that point I might convert the SBRs to
the new UE version (I think this is a firmware upgrade). But I will keep
the Touch going as a music player via LMS. The new UE Server is not
suitable for me, as I need to run it on a Linux NAS at the moment.

No, as long as they provide the promised services for a certain time

LMS does not need MySB.com to play basic URL's, like those saved or
input into your LMS Favorites. But you will lose menu navigation of
everything within Internet Radio and My Apps absent MySB.com. The other
issue is subscription services handled by MySB.com (account login and

You can emulate what LMS life will be like without MySB.com by simply
removing your MySB.com login info (or enter bogus login info) within LMS
 MySB.com.

It reminds me of being a small kid at the Texas State Fair and my

where will our Big Tex be located on the web. I see some of you

I don't expect a fire sale from Logitech. Why sell more product that
depends for use on a back-end that you'd like to discontinue at some
point? Also, in the case of the SB radio, selling the current model at
slashed prices wouldn't help the new UE in getting off to a strong start
in the marketplace.

We may see some sales from other retailers or liquidators IF those of us
who are Squeezebox fans don't buy up all the remaining stock in the

than slashed ones.

Re: [slim] How many of you have spare squeezeboxes?

2012-08-30 Thread hvb83

I'm not sure what to do, buy a spare unit or not. Especially since I'm
moving to a bigger house in a couple of months and might find some good
use for an additional player then. We've seen that SB models got very
expensive in the past once the stocks dried out, so buying a Touch right
now won't be a bad investment anyway.

But it might very well be that Logitech is actually thinking of
releasing a successor to the Touch. At least that's what I'm guessing,
since the Logitech employee in the other thread seems to be rather open
on many things, but seems to have some sort of NDA in regard to a new
Touch or any other new products that may or may not be released.

At this point I have to little information to know wether the new
platform will be something I'm willing to go for. I don't use mysb.com,
so that's easy enough for me (though I realize it's a big pain for many
of the people here). I didn't do much with the plugins available either,
so that it becomes more closed is not so much of an issue either. The
main criteria will be if Pippin is able to create a app that can control
the system in a way like we're used to now.

The main issue for me seems to be: can Touch devices that were released
during the SBS/LMS-era be firmware-upgraded to work in the new UE-era or
not and if so, will you still be able to use iOS/Android devices as a
means of controlling them, without being tied to the apps that Logitech
releases themselves?

I agree. This is the most important thing to maintain/recreate.

I'd pay something small for LMS + squeezslave+squeezeplay. No streaming

I'm just asking because I think it's unlikely that Logitech or anybody
else will do it for free on longer terms, it's just too much work to
keep it working with the latest streaming services and you need to add
support for new streaming services when they arrive for the platform to
be attractive as one or more new streaming services tends to appear on
the market every year. Logitech won't do this even if we pay for it, but
there might be third parties that are interested in doing it.

I would definitely pay a one-time or annual fee for future squeezebox
related services. This would include helping (financially) to maintain a
squeezebox community forum on the web.

What is exactly controlled by mySB.com, and how? As I understood it,
it's just a broker (or phone book, or whatever comparison). For radio
stations, it just holds the libraries of all URLs. The actual stream
comes from the radio station server. The same for Spotify/MOG/etc. It's
just an interface between Squeezebox and the service, but does not send
any actual data. And scrobbling is handled by LMS directly to last.fm,
without mySB.com as an intermediary? And a plugin for the radio service
to interface directly with TuneIn could sove the radio part.

In that sense, the bandwidth requirements per user for something like
mySB.com should be quite low, not? And thus the costs per user?

Considering all the clever plugins availabe (which is one of the things
that makes the SB system so impressive) I wouldn't be all that surprised
to see someone coming up with a plugin or somesuch that made at least
some online services available to SB users even after MySB is dropped,
perhaps by mimicking a new Radio towards the new backend. Someone used
the term proxy and that sums it up pretty good I think.

LMS includes a Tunein plugin by default. Does this work independently
of sb.com?

The Tunein app uses sb.com and has an additional feature not available
in the plugin - Presets (favourites).

An updated plugin could surely allow for account details to enable

What we need is a continuation plan + a mission statement on the

Perhaps I'm missing out on something or am I just being naive. But do we
have a clear understanding already of what the new UE-system does and
what it doesn't do? From what I've seen on the website, it does support
streaming services like Spotify and Pandora, so why wouldn't it support
many of the other services that are currently available?

And if it doesn't do that, what would be the disadvantage of the new
UE-platform in comparison to other platforms? AFAIK even with reduced
online-services, it will still be on-par with the other music streamers
out there. That is, if they release a new Touch or something like

You are correct I believe. But the information thus far is that there
are not any plans for anything equivalent to the current TOUCH (that is,
a player that can connect to your stereo with analog line out, or to
your DAC with optical, S/PDIF, or USB). The Smart Radio they are
releasing has only a headphone out. (and even with such connections, the
current radio plays only 24/48, rather than the 24/96 (or even 24/192
with EDO).

So if you are a user that only uses a Radio for mostly listening to
internet radio and online services, along with some of your own music,
then the new radio will likely work just fine. And your existing radios
can even be converted with firmware to work with the same system. Any
existing TOUCH, SB3, Transporter, etc. are reported as not being able to
be converted with firmware to the new system.

The main difference as far as I can see is that the UE system is not
compatible with the existing LMS system - you have to add another server
to get music access.

Apparently, it will be possible to install the UE firmware on an SB
Radio - but I understood this is a one-way street - you won't be able to
revert to the SB system.

I'm more concerned about the impact on devices like the Touch.

releasing this new concept to market, if they will not be releasing more

My understanding from past discussions is that logitech employees are
not allowed to discuss any new products, OR WHETHER THERE ARE ANY NEW

provide any info about the existence (or not) of any new products to
work with the UE Smart Radio. And I think it is true that Logitech sold
more SB Radios than any of their other players, including the Touch. I
have friends with the Radio and they don't understand why anyone would
want to have a big stereo system anymore (I disagree, but then I'm a
dinosaur). And I suspect a lot of the market these days is like that.
Many people just want a smartphone dock w/speakers and maybe something
like a SB Radio/Boom.

Not currently no, but there's nothing to say there won't be. It's been
said that there won't be a Touch as we know it that is a rebranded
Touch the way the new Radio for all intents and purposes is the same box
as the old one. To me this more or less hints that more products will be
added to the line, what they will be like is of course another matter.
But if you decide to introduce a new line with only one player, I think
it makes sense to begin with the Radio considering that the hardware was
readily available and that it's the most popular model, hence more
likely to rapidly get a bit of momentum for the product line.

Unless you have to replace your SB devices today there's no need to
worry too much about what shortcomings the new line has, a lot of it is
likely to be remedied before a replacement is due.
Also, while we may feel gutted that Logitech killed the SB, giving the
new products a bad rap is counterproductive. I suspect that the
continued support for SB have more to gain from a success of the
UEML-stuff than a failure. After all it's the same people that's behind
both products, if the new stuff sell they will be around, if it bombs
they may be shut down and canned replies from first line support is all
that remains.

But if you decide to introduce a new line with only one player, I think

Yeah, I would expect a device with digital or analogue outputs to be
forthcoming at some point. I think the Radio will be really nice - after
all, the SBR is! I haven't really seen a decent description of how the
server operates, but I haven't seen any reference to a Linux version -
it's available to download for Mac and Windows only. The iOS/Android app
look really rather nice from the screenshots.

TBH, I'm tempted to reversion one of my SBRs to UER to see how it works
- and i would do if there was a way of returning it to SBR afterwards.

Also, note that if you didn't run them through some sort of input

My speakers have additional line-in for additional input. If you don't
have that you may find a y-connector for line-out to speakers and try
that. Not sure if will do something funny to sound though:

You could run the squeeze through the line-in of the pc back out the
speakers? This should merge pc audio and line-in if you have right
settings.
Could run a software player on the pc and control it with the physical
player (oops I see have classics, this will only work with touch)?

I wouldn't count on it. One of the reasons they are pulling the plug I
think, is that the platform has become too open. You don't actually need
a SB-client anymore to use the server, and with iPeng being able to
emulate a player with sync and 48/96khz, even a novice can set it up.
And if Logitech isn't selling units anymore, there is no need for them
to develop any new devices for it.

They won't support that by providing us with all necessary measures to
keep that system alive. The sooner everybody surrenders to the new
system, the better it is for them... :)

Re: [slim] What steps does community need to take to ensure continued function of SB players

2012-08-30 Thread awy

Redistribution of the firmware is not permitted. That is clear.

Redistribution of the LMS packages from Logitech is restricted because
they contain the firmware for the ip3k-based players (SB1, SB2/3, Boom,
Receiver, Transporter).

Distribution of an LMS-like package, without the firmware should not be
a problem.

The main proprietary code in the Radio and Touch firmware are CODECs:
WMA family, AAC family. For Radio there is also the firmware for the
microcontroller (knobs, power management, battery management). Also
there are WiFi drivers that are a bit better than one open-source ones.

I assume LMS will last as long as you want it to (forever if you like)

DO I NEED TO TELL MY PLAYERS NOT TO AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE FIRMWARE AS I

Last point is crucial for continued LMS compatibility I feel.

No, SB hardware will not just update to UE some day. The only player

 But should this be needed
 - Touch can be updated via USB/SD absent any server.
 - I believe both Touch Radio can be setup via a local LMS server by
getting them to their Home menu then selecting My Music, connect to LMS,
 firmware is updated

does this apply to the initial setup as well as the upgrading firmware?

No, SB hardware will not just update to UE some day. The only player
that is even capable of being updated to UE is the SB Radio, and I'd
guess that requires downloading the new UE server and connecting the
Radio to that new UE server, and might even be more involved than that,
 I dunno.

And the LMS question please. Will LMS continue forever?

Yes, in it's current form, as long as you keep the original LMS download
on your computer and you don't use LMS beyond it's current OS support.
Will LMS development, updates, bug fixes continue forever? Of course
not.

I still use some VHS tapes on occasion, but I'm not expecting any
firmware updates for that VHS player. ;)

I believe so. What I don't know is whether the firmwares obtained via
LMS are actually *included* in LMS.
IOW: LMS might be just pointing that player to it's appropriate
firmware located on a Logitech server online, possibly even MySB.com.

Just register and when you are asked at the next screen to Add a Radio,
close your browser and then log in.

What system that was created in the last two years and use on a regular

What I mean is I ended up buying several SBs (not to mention Squeezepad
and iPeng) rather than just staying with the original SB3 for piping
music to the HiFi. With an excellent and versatile system such as the
SB-LMS system, it has a tendency to grow! As it happens, I could quite
well envisage having one UE-based system with the (former) SBRs just
streaming radio and the LMS-Touch for the HiFi.

Frankly I never expected the Touch to be available for ever - but I had
always hoped the SB line of kit would continue with new models.

I read somewhere that LMS includes the firmware for older players
(transporter, SB3, boom) but NOT for touch and radio.

I suspect so too. I have both my touch and Radio connected to my local
LMS, and I have both Touch and Radio updating their firmwares some time
after I installed new releases of LMS. So it appears that Touch and
Radio get their firmware files from some other server out there.

Add the controller to that as well. Duet Receiver appears to get
firmware from LMS but Duet Controller appears to get it from a server
out there !!

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Line Comes to an End (quasi official confirmation)

2012-08-30 Thread froth

This is not what I was expecting when I heard plans were being made for
more audio products. I had thought that this would be advancements in
the product line and not step back.

After reading most posts in the forums and doing a web review of the new
product pitch I believe Logitec is really focusing on the mass market of
people who just want simplistic playback capabilities from their mobile
devices and to provide some music services. Many of the consumers of
these products can care less about syncing, hi def music and using a
home audio (stereo) to listen to their music.

I will continue to use my squeezes as they are, I dont use mysqueezebox
anyway and music services available for use in Canada are almost non
existant due to the laws in Canada. I rely on my own large selection of
music and internet radio. I have various copies of LMS archived and
will insure I keep saving any later updates to LMS so that once it is
done being supported and updated I will have many years before I have to
consider any music system changes. That is provided my squeeze HW holds
up.

I will look to pick up spares as they become available if the price is
reasonable.

So for me, it is not good news to hear that this is being done but my
squeeze installation should be around for many many years. And by then
things should have changed in the tech world and it may be time to
change.
