[slim] Re: Squeezeboxes randomly rebooting

2005-05-28 Thread Fifer

Here's another symptom. Sometimes, after rebooting, my SB gets to the
Connecting to wireless network screen but when the countdown gets to
10 (always 10) it reboots to the welcome screen and starts over again.
When this doesn't happen, the countdown only gets to 19 or 18 before
the connection is made.

[slim] Re: Squeezeboxes randomly rebooting

2005-05-26 Thread Fifer

I've got some Cat 5 cable, two wall plates and a couple of patch cables
so I was planning to lash up a crossover botch tomorrow night. I'll see
how that runs. However, like you, the rest of my wireless network is
fine (main PC, wireless router/modem, laptop, PDA) so I can't see it
being interference. I was on the verge of buying an SB2 but I'm putting
that on hold until this issue is resolved, in case whatever is causing
it affects that too.

Any more advice from the Slim Devices folks?

Are Dave, Jon, Andy and adhir still having problems? If not, what fixed
it? If so, is the problem that Dean mentioned in the 6.1 nightlies
likely to be the cause (I'm running 6.0.2)? Will reverting to 5.4.1 be
likely to help?

As I said in another thread, mine started doing this suddenly after more
than a year of faultless use. That's why I'm starting to suspect (or
maybe just hoping) it's related to a recent Slimserver or firmware
update.

Damn! It's now started the random rebooting behaviour in the new
location. I'll need to try and get ethernet working to rule wireless in
or out.

I've just discovered the two threads detailed below:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=12778highlight=reboot
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=12478highlight=reboot

They describe exactly the problem I'm suffering with random reboots.
Was a cause/solution found? For info, I'm running XP Pro with SP2,
Slimserver 6.0.2 and an Actiontech Wireless server/router. Wireless
signal is 85%

[slim] SB - Strange symptoms, any ideas?

2005-05-22 Thread Fifer

I've been using my SB for over a year now without trouble (other than
the very occasional audio drop-out) until now.

Last weekend whilst listening in the wee small hours, after about an
hours trouble-free listening, the audio started to drop out in a
strange way. A few seconds would play then a few seconds silence then a
few seconds more and on ... I gave up and went to bed thinking it was
some sort of wireless interference. However, it was still the same in
the morning. Sometimes the Slimserver couldn't be found either. After
trying all the obvious stuff (repair wireless connection, power down SB
for a while, force firmware reflash), nothing worked. In desperation I
removed the PCB to see if maybe the wireless card or antenna connection
had come loose inside. I did notice some horrible growth type
contamination on the underside of the PCMCIA socket which I carefully
cleaned off with some IPA and a soft brush.

After re-assembly, the symptoms are slightly different. A song will
start to play fine but after a minute or two, the SB will reboot and
attempt to set itself up again. After it finds the network and
Slimserver, the whole damn cycle starts again. One other symptom is
that when the set-up routine starts, it sometimes skips past parts
which wouldn't be expected (such as entering the WEP key after a couple
of key presses).

I suspect my SB but I haven't completely ruled out my wireless
modem/router, the wireless card in my PC or indeed the PC itself. I
changed the Motherboard just before the symptoms started, making me
consider some form of compatibility problem between the motherboard
and the wireless card, but the SB worked fine for over an hour (maybe
two) before the symptoms started and I don't appear to have any trouble
with my wireless broadband connection.

Please help. I'm at the end of my tether and have been without music
for over a week. Any ideas?

dean Wrote:

Can you describe this growth? Was it some kind of mold? Ick.

It was difficult to tell what it was, even under magnification as it
appeared to be under some kind of coating (no-clean flux maybe?)which
went very soft when the IPA was applied. It looked a bit 'mouldy' but I
was more concerned that it might be some sort of conductive dendritic
growth. The rest of the board looked pretty clean but the joints on the
PCMCIA connector looked weird. I've looked at a lot of PCB's and I've
never seen anything quite like it. It might be a complete red herring
as I've still got problems after whatever it was was cleaned off (I
think, see the end of this post).
dean Wrote:
Is it possible that there's some kind of IR interference in the room
 that's confusing the Squeezebox?

There are no IR sources other than remote controls which aren't being
used when the SB is resetting.
dean Wrote:
Have you tried restarting your wireless router?
Yes, it didn't help.
mherger Wrote:
One simple test you could do: use a wired connection to the SB. If it's
ok, then, focus on wireless problems
I tried to do that but cannot get the ethernet connection to work from
my PC (I suspect I'm maybe using the wrong cable, x-over instead of
straight through or vice versa). I only have on ethernet cable which I
thought I got with the SB (yellow, 'patch cable' printed on it but XP
says a cable's unplugged and the SB cannot find the ethernet
connection.Anyway, the PC is in a different part of the house (further
away from the router with a poorer wireless signal (56% against 85% at
the normal location) but wireless seems to be working fine here (so
far). Nothing I can think of has changed in the normal location, so I'm
baffled. I'll leave the SB running for a while to see if it remains ok.

Thanks for the suggestions gentlemen. I'll post back when I know more.
