[slim] How to play 5.1 Flac files? SB3

2010-04-15 Thread Sam Lowry

I finally have a surround-sound setup and would like to try playing some
FLACs through my SB3. Unfortunately the two files I have tried, have
done nothing. They never play. I couldn't find a basic primer about
setting up the SB3 to do this. I thought it was automatic. Are there
certain types of 5.1 content that will/won't work?

Any tips?
Thanks,
SL

What happened to the SB Classic forum?

[slim] 7.4 - Save me from this nightmare!!

2009-10-04 Thread sam . woodley

My Squeezebox Duet and Squeezebox Boom have just been reduced to very
expensive paper weights. Well, at least the Squeezebox Boom is also a
very expensive clock radio.

So, on Wednesday I received Logitech's email announcement about the
upgrade to Squeezebox Server 7.4. Excited, I downloaded and installed
the update that night. I had been running SqueezeCenter 7.3.x on a
ReadyNAS hard drive. My iTunes music library is also saved on that
drive, which is what SqueezeCenter used as the source of my music.
Everything had been working well.

After installing the upgrade, I found that it had erased all my
settings. I had to set up my favorites, podcasts, alarms etc. from
scratch. But I eventually got it to work. Then I tried to use the
iTunes plug-in to scan my library. Disaster. Scanning this forum, I
quickly learned that the new SqueezeServer was not compatible with the
iTunes plug-in. No problem. I disabled it, restarted the server,
rescanned my entire library, and then . . . . nothing. The software
would not play any of my music (m4a files). I rebooted the hard drive
and rescanned my entire library again. Same result. I have wasted my
entire weekend troubleshooting this problem, to no avail. The players
will not lay any of the music in my library. I note, however, that I
can stream radio stations and podcasts just fine.

I just got on this forum again, to trouble shoot, and saw posts
mentioning version 7.4.1 of the upgrade. Great, I thought, maybe this
fixes the problem. So I went to download the 7.4.1 versions. To my
horror I saw an announcement: Squeezebox Server 7.4 is not currently
available for ReadyNAS

So, now I find that I have a version of the server software that is
incompatible with my hard drive. And, I have no way to go back and
instal the previous version that works.

I am at my wits end. Before this upgrade, I enthusiastically
recommended these products to everyone. Now, I want desperately to
return them, get my money back and buy a Sonos! Any constructive
suggestions would be appreciated!!

[slim] Apple Airport Extreme w/ Guest network: problem with accessing SB server with iPeng

2009-10-02 Thread Sam Lowry

Wasn't sure if this was best posted here or on the Apple forums. I
recently bought a new Apple Airport Extreme router. I'm replacing an
older Airport Extreme. This time I created a Guest Network which lets
me have what I assume is basically a virtual secondary network for
guests to use and my iPhones/ipod. On their own, they seem to be working
great. I have static ip (10.0.1.?) addresses for everything on my main
network, and DHCP (171.???.???.???) on the guest one.

Here's my problem which I only discovered because of the iPeng iPhone
app. I recently bought the newest version (1.2) and it works great if my
server computer and the phone are on the same network. But, I want the
iPhone to be on the guest network and leave the server on my main
network. I tried adding all variations of the server's ip address as the
instructions describe (10.0.1.2, 10.0.1.2:9000 and http://10.0.1.2:9000)
but apparently because the iphone is on the guest network, it isn't
letting me do it.

The question: Can I access a device/computer on a different wireless
network? And how is it done?

I realize now that if this is possible, I could have a lot more devices
on my guest network so I don't add more ip conflicts on my main
network.

Thanks!
SL

[slim] SC7.0 sometimes doesn't start up

WinXP, 764MB RAM, very large HD.

I never had problems until I updated to 7.0. At least every other time
I reboot my squeezecenter server computer, the little SB icon keeps

I have excluded the Squeezecenter directory from my virus scanner, so I
don't think that's the problem.

Where do I begin to figure out why?

[slim] Tracks (mp3) for won't play, SB3 gets stuck

2008-01-08 Thread Sam Lowry

I've had my setup for awhile (2 SB plus running Softsqueeze - WinXP
machine for the server - for more than 1.5 years now). In the last few
weeks, my SBs Softsqueeze have run into 2 different tracks from
different albums which it will not play. They are .mp3 and I think are
encoded the same as the rest of the album. They play fine using in and
all alternate media players I have (MediaMonkey, WMP, itunes). I have
6.54 slim server running.

What happens is that it appears the song gets stuck at the end of the
track and won't proceed to the next track. If I skip over the track, it
plays the next one fine. I am trying to narrow down the problem, anyone
have an idea?

Thanks

up -- i.e. it looks as though the player is attempting to play the tune
but making no progress-- and of course, there is no sound. I have
managed to link up to one of the radio stations, and I am getting some
sound in that way, so it isn't the connection to the amplifier that is
 causing the problem.

I'd welcome any suggestions as to what might be wrong. I'm not very

 straightforward.

Might be that your iTunes tracks have DRM which are not playable on

I have the majority of my music sorted as:

 Artist/Year Album/Track Title.flac

But for some music types, not accessed frequently, like compilations or
special genres, such as Childrens music, Classical, Musicals and Jazz I
have added an extra level in parallel of the Artist level:

 _Genre/Artist/Year Album/Track Title.flac

As you see, to separate the Artist from the Genres, I have added a
underscore as a first character, this way I will get all those folders
in the top or end of the list when browsing music folders. Otherwise I
would have needed one more folder level. This is working very good. I
always use the Browse Music Folder when selecting music, I even
assigned the Search remote button for this task - very handy!

 Now for my problem:

After installing SS 6.5.1 (Earlier version was before 6.5, dont
remember the exact version, probably 6.3.x) the folder order algorithm
has been changed so that the underscores is neglected, placing my Jazz
music in between of Iron Maiden and Jean-Michel Jarre, not the best
 place to search for Jazz...

I even tried to replace the Underscore with a Hyphen, but it did not
make any change. Anyone that can help me to solve this? Suggestion for
another intial character or any flag to set the way the order algorithm
 works?

I had the same complaint. No one had a solution. I was using ~ myself.

2006-04-03 Thread Sam Lowry

Not sure what else to call it... If I'm listening to some music off of
my music folder, and I want to change the tunes, I press the right
navigation button on the remote, and I end up at Now Playing, from
which I need to navigate back to the folder where I was (let's say I
have 2 Beck albums and I was listening to one, and now I want to hear
the other). Is there a way to either: 1. Show where I am, something
like: /My Music folder/Beck/Mellow Gold. or 2. Allow me to go up one
level instead of back to Now Playing

And this got me wondering, why is there a Now Playing menu option,
when this is available on the remote? I know I can delete it using the
web access, but just wondering.

Thanks,
SL

[slim] I had an idea... Possible to read books on my SB3?

2006-03-08 Thread Sam Lowry

After learning about reading RSS feeds on my SB3, I started to wonder if
there was a way to make books (from sites like
http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/) readable with a Sqeezebox. They have
.txt file versions, so the question is, how to get those files into a
form readable by the SB. Anybody have an idea?

BTW. I'm not sure I want to read long books in such a way. But it does
seem like it would benefit certain disabled people, or could provide
something for people to do while waiting in lines, or something. I
could read books with the lights off!

Thanks,
SL

I take it you are thinking of having the books read aloud, rather than
scrolled on the SqueezeBox display. If so, yes, there is active work on
text-to-speech programs, both commercially and in the free software
community. Once you know that text-to-speech is the accepted jargon,
you should have no trouble finding information on it.

And, of course, there are several sources of recordings of human beings
reading books. Some are in formats that can be easily transcoded to
something SqueezeBox will play, others less so.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I would like to see the text scrolled on
the display. I thought maybe if there was a way to convert .txt files
into RSS feeds, that might work. Haven't found a way to do that.

And to respond to the other poster, I was envisioning a Squeezebox in a
waiting room, not portable (though that would be cool).

Rats like crack?

They've extended the deal once, I bet they will again, plug in the code
and see what happens. I too am recently hooked. Thinking of buying more
myself.

[slim] Re: WMA stream for KQED?

Does anybody know where I can get the WMA stream for KQED?

The wiki page reports that it's:

 http://www.kqed.org/w/streamingfiles/kqed_wmp.asx

However, if you try plugging this into the radio tune-in window in
SlimServer, you only get the sponsor's lead-in, and the stream never
 starts.

I've been trying to get this to work also. Haven't found a way.

Tried this but not only did it not work, it reset itself when I
restarted the SlimServer.

Any other ideas?

make sure that you make that change when you have the server off.
prefs are written out as the server stops, so any change when the
server is running will just get overwritten. Also, changing the prefs

file directly doesn't affect an already running server.

That did it. Thanks! Clearly I still have lots to learn about my SB3.
