Re: [slim] What REALLY happens end-to-end with Apple Lossless files?
AndrewFG;360440 Wrote: What is the exact end-to-end signal path when using M4A alac encoded files? As I understand it, alac files are not decoded natively in the Transporter? So is it true that SqueezeCenter converts alac to flac and sends that to the Transporter? Does the Transporter then convert flac to some kind of raw binary bitstream? And does the Transporter then apply the variable volume control settings in the digital domain before the signal is converted to the variable analog output signal? If so, then it seems that there is a lot of digital processing going on in real time, in at least two different CPUs, that gives plenty of opportunities for rounding errors, timing errors, error correction artifacts, and jitter to creep in. (Not to mention any prior artifacts introduced by iTunes in the ripping process). Did anyone do proper end-to-end tests on the path CD - iTunes - alac - flac - volume - dac in real time, real world conditions? Can one be sure that the process is REALLY lossles? Any thoughts? If the definition of real time is while the signal is transcoded to SPDIF, in other words synchronous and subject to clock errors, then no, there's no real-time processing anywhere up to SPDIF. In fact, the only real-time processing is this very transcoding FLAC/WAV - SPDIF. All the rest (reading from HD, transcoding ALAC to FLAC/WAV, sending through the network, receiving from the network, reconstructing the FLAC/WAV stream) are background processes, immune to clock. So, theoritically, there can be only be software errors, no jitter or other digital sound artifacts. -- Themis SB3 - North Star dac 192 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55137 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] EAC + library wifi = DOA
No, it is not a matter of port. When you connect to the internet from a company (or a library), to make it simple, you connect through another computer : a firewall. Normally, when you connect to the library's network, the browser *may* get automatically the firewall settings (address and port) but sometimes it does not. In this last case, you need to change manually the settings of your browser and indicate the address of the firewall and its port (usually 8080). Visibly, EAC doesn't get automatically the firewall settings, so you need to indicate in EACFreedb options the firewall's address/port. -- Themis SB3 - North Star dac 192 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The problem is that for where I have a flac only file, and I've created an mp3 so I can listen to it on my ipod, it has then created a duplicate entry on the squeezebox, as it has indexed both mp3 and flac seperately. I wondered if there was a way to stop that on a folder by folder basis ? e.g create a file called .dontscan or somethign similar. You need a structure of this kind: Music -/Lossless -/Lossless/FLAC -/Lossy -/Lossy/MP3fromFLAC -/Lossy/MP3 SC -/SC/main Then, you put: all flacs in /Lossless/FLAC all files converted from FLAC in /Lossy/MP3fromFLAC all MP3 originals (not from flacs) in /Lossy/MP3 For your iPod: you'll have to import /Lossy directory For your Squeeze Center: you create two shorcuts in /SC/main directory: one to /Lossless/FLAC one to /Lossy/MP3 you change the Squeeze Center music library directory to /SC/main Hope this helps. -- Themis SB3 - North Star dac 192 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53988 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Duet network problems
Since you haven't solved the problem yet, please try some of these, one at a time : 1. Be sure that the Transmission power on your router's wireless advanced settings is set to High 2. Uncheck Short GI on your router's wireless advanced settings 3. If you're not using any 802.11n clients (ie if none of your laptops has a wifi-n adapter) : 3a. Set Mixed 802.11g and 802.11b for 802.11 Mode on your router's wireless settings 3b. Choose channel 5 on your router's wireless settings Hope this will help. BTW, ideally your WHS should be connected to your router with a Ethernet cable : this is the best way to minimize collisions and optimize wi-fi bandwidth. -- Themis SB3 - North Star dac 192 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52860 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

what_to_buy;343017 Wrote: I just don't understand why our laptops can stream music from the server (using Softsqueeze or MediaMonkey) while the SBR cannot. That's easy to explain: laptops' are often designed to connect to public wireless networks, so their wireless adapters have a better reception capabilities. Honestly, IMHO, if your tried all that, then the strength of your signal is NOT the problem. The problem comes from the placement of your router and your SBR, combined with the various electronic gear around them. So, if you can't possibly change your router's position (which I can conceive), then I see only one solution left (as you proposed) : Get a couple of powerline eth adapters (the cheapest kind -14Mbs- should be more than enough for streaming audio to SBR). -- Themis SB3 - North Star dac 192 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52860 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] AAC320 playback : differencies between mov123 and faad ?
Hi all, i have encoded my library using two formats : ALAC anc AAC320. I used Apple Lossless for the recordings that are worth it (about a third of my CDs) and adopted a slightly lossy format for the rest. The reason is that i use the same library on my iPod (classic) and at home. Simple. Well, all would be fine if i hadn't been a victim of the mov123 bug of file names' length (#4705) which obliged me to use FAAD as the AAC decoder, as suggested on the bug tracking. The problem is that i can swear that i can hear a (slightly audible) difference between mov123 and faad decoding. That is not a big broblem, to be honest, but i'm kind of a maniac when it comes to audio reproduction. I haven't been through very extensive comparisons between the two decoders (simple lack of time), so i was wondering whether there're others who have experienced these differencies between them. :) -- Themis SB3 - Arcam AV300 - Mulidine Arpége Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41777 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
