Re: [slim] Which streaming services (eg LastFM napster Spotify) display on SB Duet controller?

Can existing napster/lastFM users comment on whether a full album and
choice menu is shown on the duet controller's colour screen when using
Napster or last FM? thanks

Re: [slim] Which streaming services (eg LastFM napster Spotify) display on SB Duet controller?

2013-01-03 Thread ajmitchell

thanks for your helpful replies.

Just to be clear I'd like to use the SB duet controller if possible as
my main controller and I'd like to use a good streaming service where
the albums / tracks / artists / similar music / upcoming list etc etc is
all on this controller. I am also in the UK so MOG is not an option, its
not released here yet despite lots of promises. Ideally i'd like to test
as a free trial period.

If this fails, then yes i'd take the android app option.

thanks#

[slim] Which streaming services (eg LastFM napster Spotify) display on SB Duet controller?

2013-01-02 Thread ajmitchell

Hi

I am a later adoptor to streaming services. I don't have a touch just
classic SB's and the duet controller (the one with the jog wheel and
display). Will any streaming services work using the duet controller
showing tracks/albums/artists? Alternatively i have an android smart
phone, if the SB controller doesn't work, can anyone advise on this
(this would be second best).

Thanks

Regarding the default position, I have all the players synched

be set to scrobble?

[slim] Fubar IV DAC...Sound via USB? How?

2011-04-30 Thread ajmitchell

Hi

This is not directly a squeezebox question but I wonder if anyone can
help? Just got the nice Fubar IV DAC/headphone amp but on my main PC
having trouble. I am trying to listen to music via usb from a new
computer running windows 7 and get no sound. Everything is ok from my
laptop so I know the Fubar DAC/headphone amp is working fine.

When I connect it, it appears under windows sound devices and the
virtual volume indicator is moving (under sound settings). Makes no
difference if I unplug the audio out via analogue headphone sockets. I
have tried all the other USB ports. The option to make the USB sound as
default is greyed out.

As I said when I plug into a laptop with windows7 everything is great.

any ideas? I'll check in the bios to see if anything is amiss.

R

alex

Hi

My spare PC hard disc crashed with itunes. Have everything backed up
but by the time I got around to it, its all one year old. Didnt think
this would be an isssue, so I tried reinstalling an older copy of
itunes (it ws v9 a year ago) but I get database not recognized message.
Cannot get it to work on v10 either.

Any tips?

also is it possible to preview the itunes xml database without
reinstalling a whole new itunes? ie view the file somehow?

hi,

I'd really appreciate some help with this as its a constant problem. I
have latest SC via autoupdate (not daily) and itunesupdater (craig) and
lazysearch but no other plugins.

To break it down:

1. how do I permentantly delete the option to have zapped playlists.
I dont ever want to see zapped lists ever again

2. Why does my slimserver SC get stuck with only zapped showing at boot
up. Have to manually force re-scan everytime; and this takes about 1hour
(for about 300 playlists and 10k tracks).

thanks

[slim] Playlists only show zapped list?

2010-05-02 Thread ajmitchell

Hi

I have about 250 playlists linked with itunesbut I am having some
odd behaviour with SC playing the latest standard version/update. When
I power up often only one playlist is displayed and it is the zapped
list. I can manually force re-scan and then the others are eventually
picked up.

Also when I go into web control zapped playlist is displayed but
there appears to be no way to delete it. I would prefer to disable
zapped playlist as I sometimes accidentally hit ADD and the song is
removed.

Anyone help?

Thanks

all song and database information! I repeat everything was fine and the

remaining on rescan! doesnt look healthy.

Seems like everytime I want to listen I have to reinstall and
re-scan

[slim] Error with SC from Squeezetray.exe = Perl_newXS_flags????

2009-09-05 Thread ajmitchell

Hi I have a very standard SC (SqueezeCenter-7.3.3) setup with Win XP.
Over the last month I have had the following error message appear when
squeezetray.exe launches

The procedure entry point Perl_newXS_flags could not be located in the
dynamic link library perl58.dll followed by several other similar
messages. As a result SC does not launch.

If I reinstall everything is ok for a few days and then the same
message starts to appear?

Anyone know how to correct?

I recently added a SB2 to an existing WPA network and inadvertently

only way to solve it was to connect WIRED and then on restarting I
could enter a new pass...more carefully!!

This is a serious issue, perhaps deserves a bug report??

[slim] Minumim Wireless strength for synching SB3s

2008-10-20 Thread ajmitchell

Hi

I have just had some success in synching by changing security protocol
from WEP to WPA (7.2) but now I need to figure how far I can put the
SB3 from the router (Belkin G+ not N). At the moment I am getting
30-38% on the strength meter which is causing rept drop-outs and
rebuffering.

What is the minimum wireless strength to get a locked synched
connection. If there is no set figure, just give me your ball park
figures which work but only just...if you know what I mean.

[slim] SC7.2 not submitting to LastFM why?

All working ok...apart from nothing being submitted to LastFM. I know

outside of windowsXp built in protection as far as I know.

Re: [slim] Songs restart from beginning on sync'd players

2008-09-05 Thread ajmitchell

this happens all the time to me, so muh so that the songs get caught in
a continuous loop of restarts. for hours (if you let it) SC will play
the same song and get about 30seconds to 1minute in, and then restart.
Its quite infuriating. It seems to be related to loosing sync or maybe
buffer? particularly when multiple wireless players are connected. I
dearly wish there was a simple solution (other than going wired)

[slim] SB Requires Hard Reboot Every Time to Connect to SC7.0?

2008-04-24 Thread ajmitchell

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to 7.0 hoping that I might finally be able to sync
whilst crossfade. I cannot, but lets not go into that, I have a more
pressing problem.

Every time I switch off the computer and switch on, SC launches from
the taskbar as normal but the player (SB2 wired!) does
recognize/connect to it. I have to hard re-boot (hold down the pwr
button for 5 secs) be connect the box everytime. (once connected its
ok). I have taken off all other SBs on the network to try and isolate
the problem. Running nothing strange here, WinXP, itunes thats about
it.

Any ideas?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet and Remote - to buy or not to buy?

2008-03-09 Thread ajmitchell

Further to this idea of scrolling as the main advantage. Can you scroll
without album art, thus seeing many more lines at a time? In fact how
many lines of songs can you see on the controller's screen? (I dont see
any screen shots of this). Also is th menu structure exasctly the same
as that in the 7.0 squeezebox SC displays eg music library playlists
 etc.

thanks

This is a FAQ but it is also a recurring problem. I had been running 6.2

my Sb2's wont connect but the sb3s will. SB2 will still connect wired
but not wirelessly. Any suggestions? The router is Belkin Wireless G

[slim] [FS] New Transporter. Silver, UK, Boxed, Remote

2007-07-06 Thread ajmitchell

Hi all,

I've got a large Squeezebox3 setup (5 units) and recently bought a new
silver transporter. I have tested it, but have not installed it for use
because the form factor doesnt work for me. Its still packed away and
after some heartache I've decided to sell.

This forum has been great for me, therefore I am letting people know
prior to the usual annonymous auction site route. I have checked and I
can find no transporter previously sold on ebay and few if any on here,
these are certainly much sought after.

*Specs*
Transporter, UK power lead
Silver
Black Remote
Boxed
Instructions
Immaculate, no marks, fully functional
New Cost £1299 + delivery

I'm looking for the best offer, received in the next five days (by the
10th July). If someone really comes up with a great offer I reserve the
right to let it go early. I will offer free PP (tracked) but anyone is
welcome to collect from me in Leicester. I do have pics, please pm me
with your email if you want them or I am happy for people to email me
direct on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks

alex

p.s. I hope I have kept within forum rules

[slim] ?FAQ - Pre-N or Mimo Network.....Compatible?

2006-11-29 Thread ajmitchell

Hi all,

I'd like to upgrade my router from a netgear GT624 which doesnt quite
have the reach I need for a Pre-N or perhaps Mimo router (possibly
belkin).

I want to know if this protocol will work with the slimserver,
particularly with Belkin Mimo router? I know there have been wireless g
problems. This may be an FAQ, apologies if I have missed this post
before. I see there is only one post with mimo and this implies there
should be no problem -

[slim] Whats the Size of Your Library of RATED Songs

2006-11-12 Thread ajmitchell

Hi,

Apparently theres lots of people out there with large collections
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23701highlight=size+collection)
that would take along time to listen to (end ot end)
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25759.

What I was wondering is how large are the collections of rated songs. I
know not everyone rates their tracks, but for those that do, how many
tracks have you actually rated with one star or above? I suspect many
large collections are ripped from CD but never listended or rated.

In my case I have 9200 tracks, of which 5703 are rated, but all
listened.

thanks

For some reason this version seems to require a few more tries

One small correction the new buttons are not sleep but browse and
favourites. I don't know if anyone wants to say how useful these are
but they have potential in the software to the very useful with future
releases of Slimserver.

BTW, I wouldn't disagree that the remote is an incremental improvement
rather than a whole new ballgamebut for me its extremely welcome.

[slim] Re: how well in sync are multiple squeezeboxes?

2006-11-05 Thread ajmitchell

Yes this is a common question, but completely reasonable. I have 2SB2s
3SB3s and a transporter over quite a large area and thick walls and I
can confirm most people get reasonable synch provided network strength
(reach) is pretty good. Wired of course you should have no problems.
Problems are more likely in my opinion playing long tracks and high bit
rate tracks, and tracks off NAS. Incidentally transporter with its
double aerials has less problems.

[slim] Rave about the new Transporter Remote

2006-11-05 Thread ajmitchell

OK, there is huge controversy about the SONOS remote, but I want to say
that the new transporter remote is excellent. The circuitry and
functions are not really any better than the existing SB3 remote (I
think there is only 1 new button - sleep is that right?) but the form
factor is drop dead georgous.

Firstly, thank you for finding true black (although is black best when
the unit supplied is silver?)

Second congrats on the backlighting, the effect is really excellent

Thirdly, well done on the buttons - much better feel than the old
remote

Fourthly, excellent idea to have the icons on the buttonscool

Fifthly, excellent overall form factor and ergonomic grip

Finally, great layout - for example much better volume placement

Well done SD can you tell us who designed this masterpiece? For
anyone who wants an upgrade $29 is a bargain

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-10-31 Thread ajmitchell

I like the ideas so far some I'd never thought of but definately useful.
Heres some summarised plus more.

OPERATION
Smart playlists (as mentioned)
Multiple libraries and possibly scope for multiple users (as
mentioned)
Crossfade up to 15seconds (see thread)
Smart crossfade according to volume of track
Crossfade and Sync at the same time (for parties) [already abug but has
been one for a year]
Better synch that doesnt unsync!
Lazy search as standard (as mentioned)
Add without re-scan (as mentioned)
Synch with itunes (Followitunes) = links to what is playing on the
hosts itunes
Update to itunes automatically (without need to install plugin)

INTERFACE
Slicker browser options (as mentioned)
Multiple delete (as mentioned)
Better dynamic listing (seems to get out of syn with what is playing
easily)
Better (or different) spectrum analyser displays
Small font display on the SB3 that shows current song in medium and
upcoming in small (has nno one thought of this before)

SETUP
Clearer explanation of problem if stuttering or no connection
OR Autodiagnose report upon stutter

[slim] Crossfade: Can we have longer than 10 seconds

2006-10-28 Thread ajmitchell

Hi,

I know not everyone uses cross-fade, but for the benefit of the many
who do, I was wondering if we can have the option to cross-fade over
more than 10seconds, eg 15seconds possibly even 20. Many songs have
such a long natural fade that 10seconds give no perceptable overlap.

Is there a reason that 10 second is some kind of fixed limit?

thanks

2006-10-14 Thread ajmitchell

I have two different computers running Slim independently. For me, 6.5.0
works on both without the matchstick bug. I can confirm there is nothing
wrong with the files themselves as (for me) downgrading from 6.5.1 to
6.5.0 solves the problemso far. I have only played a hundred or so
tracks with 6.5.0 and to date there is no sound at the begining of any
track but I heard the sound twice in the middlebut I am not
shouting about this because its hard to eliminate an track error. I
need to do more testing.

I'd be interested to hear from people who have itunes + 6.5.1 running
successfully (or not)

Thanks Ben for taking an interest in the Ampersand issue.

I already mentioned I have not filed a bug yet (please read the earlier
thread), because I wanted to see if this was an issue for other
people.I doubt I am not the only one experiencing this
problembut I cannot be sure. Maybe someone else has filed one?

Whilst we are on this Ben, do you have an issue with ampersands in your
playlists?

In fact can anyone else get the symbol in an itunes playlist to
display correctly on 6.3 or above (including 6.5.0)??

If not, I agree it worth filing a bug and getting it fixed.

2006-10-10 Thread ajmitchell

James,

I have rolled back to 6.5.0 which for me works as a tray and service.

BUT if I install updater 1.9 all is not well. There are 10-30second
pauses between each track. Itunes7 does not autolaunch if not already
started, and if started, does not update with either track or skip
count.

I have not tried itunes7+Slim6.5.0+updater1.9 as a service yet = but
as you said it should work as a tray programme I thought I'd highlight
that it doesnt for me.

Any idea whats up?

[slim] Re: 6.5.1 = Nasty Electronic Sound on startup Severe Track delays

2006-10-09 Thread ajmitchell

More on this.

I deleted itunesupdater1.9 and the delay has been solved. There seems
to be an issue for 1.9 synching with itunes (at least when running
6.5.1). [James is it possible that updater doesnt work with 6.5.1??)

BUT

the nasty electronic sound (NES) is still there. On further testing =
its there on 75% of tracks. Doesn't seem to be anything that
distinguishes the 7500 with the problem (newly developed I hasten to
add) from the 2500 that appear to be ok.

I await other people's further comments on this before rolling back to
6.5.0

Progress = Just wiped off 6.5.1 + deleted plugins. Clean install of
6.5.0

Result = sound of a striking match at the start of each track is
cured!

Conclusion = there is a serious problem with 6.5.1 and possibly a
minor problem with 6.5.0 (in that some people get it occassionally with

Now I need to find out whether itunesupdater1.9 works with 6.5.0

[slim] 6.5.0....surely not more trouble?

2006-10-01 Thread ajmitchell

Sorry to post more problems.

I have had problems installing 6.5.0 Heres the story.

Was running 6.3.1, deleted cleared all plugins etc and upgraded.
Initially running as a service is OK. However, want to run
audioscrobbler and itunesupdater for 6.5 so try running not as a
service and getting errors.

Now on start up the Slim.exe dos box always quits once running for
about 20 seconds on start up hard to read any error message. But I
can re-start manually; in which case I get the error ERROR: Slim::
Control: Command::setExecuteCallback has been deprecated!

Also in my playliststhere are no songs!

Finally I seem to have a playlist linked from itunes 129 random
singles that I do not recognize or remember creating!

Can anyone offer any help

thanks

[slim] 6.5.0 and Plugins advice

2006-09-22 Thread ajmitchell

Hi All,

Like many others I upgraded 6.3.1 to 6.5.0. First congrats to
slimdevices on a great number of fixes and improvements.

Initially 6.5.0 would not run even after a clean install. But the error
seemed to involved a plug in (the folder is kept even after a clean
install unless you specifically delete it).

After cleaning everything out and installing as a service it works fine
as a basic install.

Trouble is I usually use
LastFM plugin
Lazysearch
itunes updater
Audioscribbler

My understanding is that these needed to be used with slimserver not
as a service - does this apply to 6.5.0. Further are these plugins all
available for 6.5.0. - and have people got them working successfully

thanks for your help

I have to agree with FL here, if the high end DACs in the transporter
could be used for other components (via digital input) this would be a
killer app. for audiophiles I think. It would go a long way to justify

awesome DAC as well.

If you don't need the on-board DAC I doubt you will see a signnificant
benefit that will justify the outlay - no doubt someone will eventually
do a high end SB3 +DAC vs Transporter comparison...maybe me in 6
months or so!

I was hoping for was a clean looking transport with a graphical remote.

Agreed a graphic remote would be great, but as SONOS already offer this
I suppose its easier for slimdevices to look to aftermarket
solutions...although admittedly this will always be a compromise.

I think it will have a tough time against an SB3 plus a $1500 DAC.

I am sure your right, and this is exactly what I am thinking about
right now (although the Music Fideilty DAC is a cool $4000!]:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=123933

OK, so you can use the Transport DAC for other inputs

Are you sure about this? Lets wait for confirmation

The other big issue (already mentioned) is how does it integrate into
multi-room with Sb3 etc. If there is no problem here (as I suspect)
then bundling the Sb3 for free is a nice sweetener IMHO

[slim] Re: 24/96 source material?

2006-07-25 Thread ajmitchell

I think we are suddenly going to see a lot of interest in 24/96 in these
forums. For most IMHO its a non-issue as there a lot of quality that can
be squeezed out of good old 16/44 (eg lossless CODECs) which even now
most don't use. However, my reading of the HiFi magazines is that
higher bit rates sound more and more natural (even tho many don't
actually notice). The problem as you say is there is tiny amount of
source material and few want to rip their own vinyl at anything like
this quality.

However, lets search the web and unpack some of this, to generate some
answers..

q1. Is it worth recording from analogue at 24/96 rather than 16/44

q2. Can you rip DVD-audio to 24/96 files in some format?

[slim] [Fun] - Listening time with large collections

2006-07-24 Thread ajmitchell

Hi all,

These posts of 20k 40k and 90k collections
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23701page=11)got me
thinking about listening times and habits. Assuming a mean track length
of 4.5 mins, and typical listening of 4 hours per day / 50 tracks ( last
FM stats tell me its usually much lower than this)..then here are
some interesting stats for those with big libraries

If you have 1000 tracks, thats 2.8 days of continuous listening day and
night.

If you have 10,000 tracks then thats 29 weeks of typical listening
(see chart enclosed)

If you have 100,000 tracks [= 3 tracks from every CD released in the US
for 1 year]** then thats 16.5 years(!) to listen to your collection 3
times (in a use typical pattern).

If you were mad enough to collect 1 million tracks [thats every track
from all music officially released in the world in 1 year!!]** it would
probably take 30 years to collect (manically collecting 33k tracks per
year) and then 54.9 years to listen to once - ie an entire
lifetime

thats food for thought

[slim] Re: [Fun] - Listening time with large collections

2006-07-24 Thread ajmitchell

Now the point about ratings in itunes is interesting. I dunno if you
noticed but itunes only allows a certain speed of data entry (say 10
seconds to click and move on) [unless applying mass ratings of the same
no.]. Also say it takes 30 seconds to preview any particular
track.and 5 second thinking time. Thats 45seconds to rate a track.
(You can seem where I am going).

So say with 10,000 tracks thats 125 hours. It would be crazy inputting
more than 8 hours per day.so thats 15.6 days to rate your 10k
database. No say you want to add album art (60seconds); track gain (10
seconds) and re-title.wow thats another couple months in admin
time.

You guys don't have full time jobs do you! ;)

Ps. My collection is 9,000 tracks but unusually its stuff I
like.ie, I delete 80% of every album and just keep the good stuff,
that way random play is usually fun.

Very strange indeed. Re-scanned at least twice no effect. Deleted

Well thanks for your replies so far, this is more representative, albeit
of users on this forum (rather than SB users at large). The most common
combination is two then one. About 10% with more than 5 is interesting.
Upstatemike gets some kind of wow factor for a regular (non employed by

- Eight or Nine
- Ten to Twenty
- More than Twenty!

Provisional results show quite a few people running more than 1 but only
a handful more than 5.I would like to see some more votes to add to
the robustness of these figures.
