Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox: Product Name

2013-01-30 Thread cooppw02

There's a lot of good suggestions here, but I think there's a few
principles that ought to be adhered to that will cull about half the
list.

1. It shouldn't encroach on someone else's name/trademark/IP.

 - "BelCanto" is out: as has been mentioned, there is a hifi
company by that name.

 - You'll probably get a nastygram from Logitech if you were to
use the phrases "Squeeze" or "Slim" or the like anywhere in the title.

2. Googling should yield relevent results.

 - Doing a search for "juice box" or "music box" is going to
give you a lot of results for anything but the device.

You're right. I got mistaken because the first product the OP linked
to is just an ordinary USB drive.

I think the Touch ought to be capable of connecting to a NAS (I think I
read somewhere that Samba is installed on it), but doing so almost
certainly isn't officially supported and wouldn't be easy for a newbie.

The Duet can't directly access an external hard drive - it has to
connect to a computer running the Squeezebox Server software.

The Squeezebox Touch can do what you describe. It can play files
directly off most external USB hard drives.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox & Unbuntu not recognising music folder

2010-04-07 Thread cooppw02

What I believe is happening here is that when you insert the pen drive
into the Linux machine, it's being mounted with permissions that are
too strict for SBS to use them. When you copy the files to your
server, the files keep those strict permissions. I believe the
solution is to either run that command every time you copy music from
the pen drive, OR I believe that changing how the drive is mounted
might solve your problems once and for all. You'll have to make some
changes to your fstab. What is the filesystem on the pen drive?

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab for more info.

I believe the feature being requested here is integration with

Re: [slim] Integration with DropBox

2010-03-25 Thread cooppw02

A month ago, one of their developers posted that they would be releasing
Linux ARM builds this year, but gave no ETA:

http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=17384#post-108742

So, even if it's impractical to get it officially supported, it could
be a really neat DIY project for the Touch.

I'm not a Dropbox user, but I like the idea. One reason I'm a little
averse to Dropbox is because I caught them astroturfing their service
on Digg a while back. In fact, the guy I caught appears to be the same
dev I linked to above. See timeserena's comment on this story, and his
comment history.

http://digg.com/software/Dropbox_GDrive_Killer_finally_launches_plus_Linux_iPhone

http://digg.com/users/timeserena/history/comments

He couldn't have been the only Dropbox person in that Digg thread. The
comments on that page are just stuffed with generic platitudes about
Dropbox.

They also seem to employ Zed Shaw. I'm already a bit OT here, so I'll
just stop with that.

Why would I be upset? I'm a Linux guy. I use ugly software all the
time, and I like it that way. :)

As for a fancier default interface for Pidgin... that's not going to
happen. See:

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#LookFeel

They have the typical open-source attitude of "If you don't like it,
the source & config files are located over there." Open source
developers are also hostile toward scope creep, which is why you
probably won't see them doing a web service like Meebo.

All that being said, you can probably change GTK themes to make Pidgin
blend in with your desktop a lot better.

SBS usage accounts for only a tiny slice of all media player usage, and
Trillian is similarly (un)popular. The intersection of users of both
applications is vanishingly small.

If you're willing to switch IM clients, I believe there are plugins for
Pidgin that will pull info from Last.fm and apply it to your profile.

story: good Javascript performance is also essential, and by all

A lot of the capture cards do MPEG encoding, so the backend just has to
be capable of dumping the stream to disk, doing commercial flagging, and
running the database. Just about any PC with a lot of storage would
work.

Newegg has a fanless ION mobo/Atom CPU combo for less than $120. You
could put together a near-silent (or possibly even totally silent)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't video playback single-threaded,
making a big quad a little bit of overkill? Dollar for dollar, I think
you're probably better off getting a dual core with a fast clock than a
quad, especially when you also consider power consumption.

I built a MythTV box about a year ago with a e8400 (3GHz C2D) and it's
more than fast enough to handle all of the high-bitrate, hi-res video
that I've thrown at it.

This depends a lot on the hardware, OS, client, and power consumption
settings. It is possible to run one of these programs without
significantly altering the power consumption of the machine. The laptop

Re: [slim] Play files at work with just webbrowser

If you can already access the web UI from work, you've already won half
the battle. Otherwise, you need to adjust your home networking gear to
forward the necessary Squeezecenter ports to your server.

Make sure you have LAME installed on your server.

When at work, I'm assuming you'd be accessing the web UI by using the
URL of
http://yourhomeipaddress:9000/

To listen in, point whatever media software you have on your work PC
to
http://yourhomeipaddress:9000/stream.mp3

You may need to adjust some settings by going into the SC settings,
going to the Player tab, and selecting your work player from the
drop-down list.

You may need to adjust some security settings under the Advanced tab.

After that, you should be able to control it just like any other using
the web UI.

Re: [slim] Harmony, Receiver, SB3 confusion

2009-03-03 Thread cooppw02

Well, I'm 2/3 done with a hack of the type that both you and I are on
the same page about. I worked at it for a little while about a month
ago, and just haven't gotten around to finishing it.

I have a Linux HTPC, a Harmony One remote, and an SBR. I have set up
the Harmony to emulate the SB3 remote. I have set up LIRC to recognize
these SB3 IR codes. I have also written a few simple scripts that are
sent to Squeezecenter and control the SBR. The scripts are as simple
as the following, which is a pause/play toggle.

Code:

#!/bin/bash
  echo '00:04:20:16:1a:65 pause' | nc mythbox 9090 -q 1

The MAC address is the SBR, and mythbox is a box running my
Squeezecenter. The CLI documentation is all that's needed to simple
variations on this.

The only thing I have left to do is to write a config file pointing to
those scripts for LIRC's irw program, and I also need to get irw to
start on boot.

You could do the same thing... LIRC does run on OS X. This isn't
entirely trivial stuff though. IMO, LIRC is a complete PITA to
configure. I guess it's necessarily so, because everyone is trying to
use a different IR receiver, a different remote, and are trying to
control different programs.

No agillis, the SBR doesn't have an IR receiver.

One possible hack to get the SBR responding to the Harmony is to add an
IR receiver to your server, then throw together some scripts to tie
button presses to the Squeezecenter CLI. However, this approach would
generally only work if your server is in some proximity to your SBR.

In your case aiken, why not match the SBR with the powered speakers,
and the SB3 with the A/V receiver? Otherwise, it's probably simplest
to just get another SB3 and sell the SBR if you don't need another
player.

work too well if it takes more than 5 button presses to do whatever

For Linux users, I've found MP3FS to be a very elegant solution to this
problem. You point MP3FS at a directory full of FLACs, and it creates
a virtual directory full of MP3s. Only the MP3s don't exist anywhere
on a disk, but are transcoded on-the-fly from the FLACs.

Only downside to this approach is that it's pretty resource-intensive
operation.
