Re: [slim] Grandfather clock plugin, possible?

2008-02-07 Thread dborn

Indeed... :) with interchangeable chimes (Westminster, Whittington or
St. Michael's, whatever, cuckoo clock!) and selectable period (off, 15,
30, 60 minutes) and probably a turn off the chimes at night option
too.

If I get this project in a decent state, I might enlist someone with an
actual GF clock to send me some sound clips so as not to get on anyone's
bad side by lifting some clips off the internet...

Once I can get actual wav or mp3 clips playing at will, then I'll
concentrate on the rest of the logic.

Think about it, an SB with a decent amp would make a terrific high-tech
grandfather clock! You could even have ol' Big Ben in your living room!

Re: [slim] Grandfather clock plugin, possible?

2008-02-06 Thread dborn

Thanks for the reply guys,

Unfortunately for now, I'm stuck with V6.5 as I'm running off a NAS but
I guess I could take a peek at the V7 code to see how it's done. I've
been digging deeper in the squeezebox slimp3 comm protocols and I've
found commands to feed a stream directly into the SB decoder. It's as
low-level as it gets but I'll see if I get lucky figuring out how it
works without getting the SB into an incompatible mode WRT the rest of
slimserver and its main task of playing music...

[slim] Grandfather clock plugin, possible?

2008-02-05 Thread dborn

I have an idea for a plugin that would actually involve playing some
sounds without actually playing a track.

My idea is for a grandfather clock plugin that would always emit (for
lack of a better word) the tick-tock sound and would also play chimes
every 15/30/60 minutes and would also count the hours. I was planning
on allowing for the linking to a display plugin (such as WeatherTime
which I use) to handle displaying something on the SB's screen.

My question is: is it possible to feed the Squeezebox with some short
sound clips without actually going through the whole play track code?
I've looked at the Squeezebox communication protocol and did not find
what I was looking for. Before I embark on this journey, can anyone in
the know either confirm or deny this possibility? (and if possible, a
short explanation would be great!)

Thanks,
Daniel

[slim] Displaying Now Playing information in web page

2007-05-14 Thread dborn

Is there a way, using an existing plugin or otherwise, to display the
Now Playing data for the currently playing track in a nice and
appealing format with all the music related information present such
that it could be displayed on a computer screen and be visible from a
distance?

Something similar to Michael Herger's Album Review plugin but using
only the local information?

This page would not have any buttons or controls, just for display
purposes.

I wouldn't want to see info such as bitrate or filesize or date
modified. I imagine a page with the cover art followed by title, album,
artist, genre, perhaps comment. Having the ability to specify which
field to use and in which order would also be nice.

I've gone through the slimserver technical information pages and I
don't see anything that would do what I want. I haven't found any
plugins that would do this either. I know that there is an issue of
catching a track change from a web page (how to get a dynamic update of
tracks?)

I was thinking of maybe using Michael's plugin and modifying it to do
this but was just wondering if anybody had done it already.

Thanks,
Daniel

Re: [slim] at my wit's end with SB3

Since we're throwing ideas around, you might want to try this:

At the EXACT physical location of your SB3, disconnect the SB3 and try
connecting a laptop in the _same_ power outlet and connect it to your
lan using the _same_ ethernet cable...

You could even use softsqueeze to emulate the SB3 and play some
music. What does that do? Any difference?

Good luck chasing the ghosts... ;)

2007-01-14 Thread dborn

Perhaps this message is generated locally when your squeezebox doesn't
find the SqueezeNetworks server (assuming you're using that?). Besides,
how would the server notify you if it is down!? Perhaps you should turn
down the brightness or turn it away from your face when you sleep.

From where I'm standing, you appear to be slightly over-reacting. If
this is the only aggravation in your life, you are lucky.

Maybe you should return the unit because if this little thing makes you
jump out of your skin, I wouldn't want to be near you the next time a
song skips or slimserver crashes... ;-)

Peace man.

2006-08-26 Thread dborn

For what it's worth, here are my rescanning numbers:

All my music is MP3 with proper tags (no embedded artwork though),
there's more or less 80% of my collection that has album artwork
contained in a single cover.jpg file per directory.

17666 songs, 1311 albums, 656 artists, 9 playlists (!)
For a full rescan, it took exactly 2 hours and 45 minutes and that's
running on an Linkstation HG300! with 128MB or RAM and a 266MHz RISC
processor!

The scanning process is taking 1.78 seconds per file and that's WITH
the d_scan debugs turned on! This is running on a computer the size
(and power) of a toaster! ;-)

I can only imagine it would be much faster on any half-decent desktop
computer...

Anyway, my $0.02...

Be careful with the HG300. It's been known to brick when you flash it
with ANY firmware. I have one myself and bricked the first one. The
replacement one I got, I opened it up and fixed up stuff on it from a

I'm not sure buying an LS to run slimserver on, is such a good idea
anymore (Slim Devices is dropping the support for the LS on version 6.5
of SS). Many other NAS'es offer built-in support for slimserver these
days at similar or slightly higher prices.

My 2 cents,

I'd LOVE to use the MusicMagic plugin but unfortunately they don't have
a version that runs on my Linkstation (only x86) so I have to use the

a Samba share. Then I have a Perl script that checks every 30 seconds
for new/modified playlists. If it finds some, it will copy the playlist
in the proper slimserver playlist folder and converts the windows
M:\folder\file.mp3 format into /mnt/music/folder/file.mp3 format
and then my script uses the SlimServer CLI to trigger a rescan
playlists. Which seems to take way too long to complete considering
that the playlist folder only has 1 playlist containing 10 songs...

[slim] Why is rescan playlists taking so long?

2006-03-07 Thread dborn

Hi,

I'm working on a Perl script to copy MusicMagic generated playlists
from my WinXP PC to be copied and converted to a Linux SlimServer-like
playlist. Once the playlist is generated, my script will notice it,
convert it and copy it in the proper directory for the slimserver and
then it requests the slimserver to rescan the playlist folder through
the CLI interface.

My music collection is large (~17000 tracks) but my playlist directory
contains 1 test playlist of 10 songs and yet, slimserver will be busy
rescanning the playlist folder for several minutes (10 or more?).

It seems it might be scanning more than just the playlist folder. is
this normal and if so, why?

Is there a better way to get that new/modified playlist into the
slimserver (using the CLI interface from within my script)?

I'm running the latest 6.2.2 nightly from about a week ago.

Thanks,
Daniel

I've found a way to run the MMM on my WinXP PC and then to generate a
playlist which gets copied and converted (changing '\' to '/' and such)
by a perl script running on my linkstation. This should all work
beautifully but one difficulty I'm having right now is simply reading
in this newly named playlist into slimserver... If I just copy this new
playlist in slimserver's assigned playlist folder, it doesn't get found
automatically. I looked in the .conf file for a possible repository of
created playlists to amend but I didn't find any.

One solution is to create a dummy playlist in slimserver (such as
mmm.m3u) and then overwrite that one playlist from my little perl
script but this is a bit limited in the sense that I can only have
one MMM generated playlist at a time.

How could I get slimserver to automatically see any new externally
generated playlist when doing a browse playlists?

Thanks,
Daniel

[slim] Re: Documenting the use of tags in Slimserver

2006-02-26 Thread dborn

Wow, thanks to everyone for documenting the tags that are used by
SlimServer. This will simplify things for many people I'm sure!

Looking at the list of supported tags, most of them are straightforward
and self-explanatory, others are a little less clear what they are used
for (and how they should be filled).

Such as:
Album sort (TSOA)
Artist sort (TSOP)
Compilation (TCMP)
Title sort (TSOT)

For discnumber (TPOS), I used the following format: 1/2 (meaning disc
1 of 2) even though my collection may only contain that one disc and not
the second... This seems to work ok.

Thanks,
Daniel

[slim] Re: Documenting the use of tags in Slimserver

2006-02-20 Thread dborn

Yes, thanks Geoff.

Doing that little subset allowed me to quickly fix most of my problems.
The disc and discc tags ended up just being user-entered tags so
the one I had to use was discnumber or something similar (the one
that gets mapped to TPOS) and that worked.

Now I have my multi-disc sets properly identified and the purely
various artists also. Now I just need to figure out how to deal with
albums by one main artist that have contributors for certain songs.
Probably setting album artist/band (TPE2) set to the main artist and
artist (TPE1) set to the contributor(s) will do the trick. For those
albums, do I need to set all tracks album artist = main artist even
if certain tracks don't have other contributors? should the artist tag
be left blank? (this might confuse other simpler players though?)

[slim] Re: What is the performance like on a Linkstation

2006-02-19 Thread dborn

I first had slimserver running on a linkstation HD-H160 and now have
moved up to a HD-HG300. The first was usually fast enough (web update
was a little slow but not too bad) now in the HG300, it's faster.

I find it quite acceptable and I am not considering moving slimserver
to a more powerful machine in the forseeable future.
My music collection has 17500+ tracks (in 1300+ albums) and I have
slimserver look for artwork too.

The HG model has a 33% faster CPU (266 vs 200 MHz) and double the RAM
(128 vs 64MB) so it might be better to choose an HG.

[slim] Re: Documenting the use of tags in Slimserver

2006-02-03 Thread dborn

Thanks Jim,

I exclusively use MP3 files and use Mp3tag to maintain the tags. I can
create a tag named compilation and set it to 1 but will it be
recognized by SS? I guess I could go digging in the perl code to try to
understand what it does but I would think that some people here
(especially the slimserver developers) would know this already.

What's the use of adding all these spiffy features if many (most?)
people aren't able to use them!? I can't be the only one here...

I would think that this info should be part of the help files
distributed with the slimserver package. I think that the development
of slimserver is like a speeding train, it will never stop long enough
for the developers to have time to do a full documentation effort on
slimserver so it would be best to do short bursts of it as things get
developed and put in place.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks,
Daniel
P.S. Maybe I should open a bug report on this? (if there isn't one
already)

[slim] Re: Documenting the use of tags in Slimserver

2006-02-01 Thread dborn

You got my vote... :-)

I guess I should try a small subset of my music collection with maybe 1
or 2 multi-disc albums and 1 or 2 various artists albums. Now it takes
too long to go change everything (even if Mp3tag is good) and then
rescan the whole database.

Last time I tried to use the multi-disc album, I set the title to the
same thing for each disk, numbered all my tracks starting at 1 for each
disk and then I used tags disc of discc to identify the order of the
discs. This did not work, I got all of them mixed up with multiple
tracks #1, #1, #1, #2, #2, etc...

For the various artists albums, I tried setting the artist field to
each individual artist (my albums are organised by folder with names of
'%artist% - %album%' I don't remember what it did but it did not work
correctly. So I moved the individual artist to the performer field and
hard-coded the artist field to Various Artists.

What I would like to do is to avoid having thousands of artists with
albums of 1 song. I would like to have a way to search the album
artist field and the song artist (performer) field. I've been
following the classical music thread on tagging and it looks real
interesting. My needs are modest though, I'd just like to be able to
define in slimserver which fields to search on (such as album, artist,
performer, conductor, year, genre, language, etc...)

And about the genre issue, there's got to be a better way to use
this... I use separate genres with a ';' in between but I end up with
hundreds of genres to the point that it becomes unuseable. I've been
searching the allmusic.com site and they use genre and style and a few
other descriptors (such as mood IIRC) which would help alot in
organising interesting playlists. Also, I've got too many albums listed
as rock, pop or jazz which seems to be way too general to use and
hope that the music I select by genre only goes well together... Ah the
dilemma of having too much music to listen to... ;-)

[slim] Re: Random Mix: Limiting what is played

2006-02-01 Thread dborn

So I am wrong to assume that if I have songs with multiple tags such
as:

01-song1 genre: rock;grunge
02-song2 genre: rock;light
03-song3 genre: rock;hard
04-song4 genre: pop;light

And I decide to play songs with the following criteria:
include rock, exclude grunge

This would return me songs 2,3 (instead of songs 1,2,3)

This sounds wrong to you?? so how would you make the exclude thing
work then??

[slim] Documenting the use of tags in Slimserver

2006-01-31 Thread dborn

Hi, I've read many threads and have had my share of tagging questions
concerning slimserver. It would be very useful to have documentation on
the subject of what tags should be used and how, in order to use all the
great features in slimserver.

Maybe it's just me but I can't get most of the special features of
slimserver to work (such as compilation albums, multiple-disc albums,
etc.)

I use Mp3tag and have many tags (such as performer, composer, disc,
discc, language) so that I can save this info somewhere until I can
figure out how this is supposed to work. For the Various Artists
albums, I finally gave up trying and just set Artist to Various
Artists and put the individual artists in the Performer tag.

As a software developper, I know how boring writing documentation is
but a quick reference would be nice... ;-)

Thanks,
Daniel

[slim] Songs added in reverse order from softsqueeze

2005-05-27 Thread dborn

I'm running slimserver 6.1 nightly from 05/24
I went to softsqueeze and did a search for artist.
I searched for arioli which returned 3 artists:
Susie Arioli Band
Susie Arioli Swing Band and
Susie Arioli Swing Band featuring Jordan Officer

Each of these have 1 album each.

From there, I went to All Albums (4th choice after the 3 artists) and
pressed Play.

This added all songs for all 3 artists but in reverse order!
(15, 14, 13, 12, ..., 1, 13, 12, 11, ..., 1, 14, 13, 12, ..., 1)

Anybody else experienced this?

[slim] Browse by genre with Various Artists has a problem

2005-05-02 Thread dborn

I'm seeing this problem with both 2005-05-01 nightly of 6.1.x branch and
with 6.0.3 release (non-nightly?)

First, a bit of background info: I have slimserver running on my PPC
linkstation and I have over 12000 MP3s (900 albums) with 131 Various
Artists albums. 23 of those albums also have the Jazz genre.

Now what works properly: I have some music playing. I browse by artist,
go to the Various Artists entry and click on the link. My 131 albums
show up in a few seconds with no interruption in the music.

What doesn't work: I have some music playing. I browse by genre, go to
the Jazz entry and click on the link. All my Jazz artists show up. I
go to the Various Artists and click on the link. The web interface
just sits there. Within 20 seconds, the music stops playing, my
Linkstation's CPU is pinned at 100% for about 7 minutes before I get
control back, showing the 23 albums (!) and the music slowly starts to
play again (1 second on, 1 second off for a while) until everything
returns to normal.

There seems to be something wrong here. Also, I would prefer to have
the Browse by Genre selection show me albums instead of artists when
selecting a genre. Would it be very difficult to have some way of
selecting one way or another? (genre-artist genre-album) either as
a server setting or some kind of radio button in the browse by genre
page? (I'm also guessing that showing the albums instead of the
artists, would solve this problem too...) :-)

Thanks for any feedback,
Daniel

[slim] Multiple disc albums using DISC DISCC doesn't work.

2005-04-30 Thread dborn

I'm using a recent 6.1.0 nightly and I filled DISC DISCC tags for my
multi-disc albums album title (disc %DISC% of %DISCC%) and then
removed the (disc x of y) part in the album titles. And then I
rescanned. This doesn not seem to work (or I don't understand how it's
supposed to work!?) because regardless of the Group Discs setting, all
my multi-disc albums show up as single albums with tracks all listed in
numerical order (not according to disc order). I've already filed bug
1473.

[slim] Re: Multiple disc albums using DISC DISCC doesn't work.

2005-04-30 Thread dborn

Yep.

The album names are the same but I didn't move the mp3 files into the
same directory... (e.g. /mnt/music/AC-DC Live (disc 1 of 2)
/mnt/music/AC-DC Live (disc 2 of 2)). I wouldn't think that the
directory names matter..?

I used the tags disc discc but it pretty much reacts as if these
tags didn't exist. Some only have the disc tag with no discc (disc
2). I tried both settings for grouped albums and wiped cache before
each. No difference was perceived.

Also, how would the tracks appear if I chose to have all multi-disc
albums show up as single albums?

01 - track 1 of first disc
02 - track 2 of first disc
(...)
01 - track 1 of second disc
02 - track 2 of second disc
(...)

OR

01 - track 1 of first disc
01 - track 1 of second disc
(...)
02 - track 2 of first disc
02 - track 2 of second disc
(...)

I would assume #1 makes more sense musically..?

Thanks,
Daniel
