[slim] Display with Slimserver not running

2006-04-27 Thread dyohn

Hello and thank you for this forum. I just installed my first
Squeezebox 3 and love it so far.

I wonder if it is possible to enable the date and time display when the
Slimserver software is not running? The computer hosting the server is
often shutdown, and I'd like to keep the display active on the
Squeezebox. Is there something I can do, such as logging into the
Squeeze Network while the server is off?

Thank you for any replies.

[slim] Re: Roku Soundbridge Radio Review

2006-04-30 Thread dyohn

Two reasons why I chose a Squeezebox 3 over the Roku 1000: the
Squeezebox includes a far better built-in DAC, and the display is much
easier to read from across the room. Plus the design of the SB3 is
aesthetically simply beautiful... oh, and it includes built-in Pandora
support.

[slim] Simple question

2008-10-31 Thread dyohn

Can the SBIII connect to an iTunes Server without running Squeeze
Center?

I have two SBIII's and run Squeeze Center on my PC and have been happy
for several years. But I just obtained a NAS device that comes
preloaded with iTunes Server. (Iomega StarCenter ix2) It does not
support Squeeze Center - or at least Iomega says it doesn't.

Thanks!

[slim] Help with networking issue

2007-09-29 Thread dyohn

Hi there. I've been enjoying my Squeezebox 3 for about a year now, but
I had to change my wireless router and I'm having trouble.

I lost my Linksys router and installed a Belkin model G 4-port wireless
router. I can connect to it from the SB3 and get onto the Squeeze
Network without any trouble. But I cannot "see" the PC running Slim
Server. I opened router ports 9000, 9090 and 3483 for both TCP and UDP
to the IP address of the PC, but no luck. I am running Macafee on the
PC but I uninstalled the firewall software. The PC is running Win2K
SP4 so there is no XP firewall. Any clue to what else I need to
check?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Help with networking issue

2007-09-29 Thread dyohn

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have a laptop available to test the system. I can however ping
the SB3 from my PC, which is hard wired to the router.

The "port opening" is in the Belkin control panel section called
"virtual servers." I set the IP address for the PC running Slim Server
so calls on the three ports I mentioned are directed to it. Not sure if
this is required, but knew those three ports are used by the SB3.

The router is connected to a separate DSL modem. Internet connectivity
is working fine.

[slim] Another "cannot connect" thread

2007-12-04 Thread dyohn

My SB3 cannot access my slim server 6.5.4.

- I get proper connection to the wireless network, IP is properly
assigned by the DHCP server, and can access the Squeeze Network without
issue.
- I can ping the SB3 from the server PC which is running Win XP Pro
SP2.
- Even though the slim server installation appears to have opened the
proper ports in Windows firewall, I have disabled Windows Firewall and
have also tried completely uninstalling McAfee Security Center,
Personal Firewall and Virus Scan. No luck.
- The SB3 gives me the message "connecting to Slimserver" then times
out.
- The SB3 apparently can see the IP of the slim server PC as it comes
up on the SB screen when I set up networking, but it cannot access it.

- I have tried creating virtual servers and port openings in the
wireless router (Dlink DIR-655) firewall, but it makes no difference no
matter what I do.
- I downloaded the TCPview utility and it does not show any other
devices using ports 9000, 9090 or 3483.

What can I try next? Help please.

1) Yes, I can access Slimserver from the local PC. I can run Soft
Squeeze and play music files on the PC. Slim Server is set to allow
all incoming connections.

2) Thank you, I will remove those settings from the router.

3) Yes, I inadvertently had both firewalls running. Now that I have
uninstalled McAfee, what can I do to "undo" the damage it may have done
to my system?

Thank you very much for the reply!

Interestingly, I can connect to and control the SqueezeBox from my

This evening I tried completely removing all traces of McAfee from my

Re: [slim] Another "cannot connect" thread

2007-12-08 Thread dyohn

Thank you for the reply.

1) Yes, the Slim Server is set to "Do Not Block."
2) I double checked and Windows Firewall is off.
3) TCP/IP filtering was on, but all the "permit all" radio buttons were
checked. Just to be safer, I turned filtering off and rebooted. No
effect, SB3 still cannot connect.

I also noticed the "Enable IEEE 802.1.x authentication" was on, so I
disabled this as well. No effect.

Out of desperation I tried an older wireless router, a Belkin G I had
laying around. After swapping it out with the D-Link, the SB3 had no
problems connecting to it and to Squeeze Network but still cannot see
SlimSever.

I really appreciate the help. I know a little about computers and
operating systems but very little about Windows Networking, so anything
I can try is worth a shot!

Re: [slim] Another "cannot connect" thread

2007-12-08 Thread dyohn

FYI, here is the port information from a utility called TCPview being
used by SlimServer.

SLIM.EXE:2480 TCP video2:1031 localhost:9092 ESTABLISHED
SLIM.EXE:2480 TCP video2:3483 localhost:1147 CLOSE_WAIT
SLIM.EXE:2480 TCP video2:9090 video2:0LISTENING
SLIM.EXE:2480 TCP video2:3483 video2:0LISTENING
SLIM.EXE:2480 TCP video2:9000 video2:0LISTENING
SLIM.EXE:2480 UDP video2:5*:*
SLIM.EXE:2480 UDP video2:1900 *:*
SLIM.EXE:2480 UDP video2:3483 *:*

Is this normal, as all the "how to" info in the WIKI and elsewhere only
talks about three ports being used by SLIM? (video2 is the newtork name
of the server PC.)

Re: [slim] Another "cannot connect" thread

2007-12-08 Thread dyohn

Wow, thanks very much Siduhe, I will carefully go over everything you've
suggested.

I do have a simple network, by the way> I have two PCs wired to the
router and the SB3 connected wirelessly. My Tivo connects to the
router through the SB.

I am certain there is a firewall issue going on as I can ping out from
the PC, and I can ping the SB from the other PC, but the other PC
cannot ping the server. It's as if the server PC does not exist.

I am using an Intel Pro 100+ Management Adapter NIC. Is it possible it
is somehow allowing outgoing packets but blocking incoming?

All my Slim Server setting are correct, the Windows firewall is off (or
when it was on, the three ports required by Slim Server were open) and
all traces of McAfee have been purged from the system. I downloaded
(and paid for) the PC Registry Cleaner you suggested. It found over
500 issues and corrected them, but alas it has had no effect.

I will go over the rest of your message and see if I can find
anything.

Thank you!

Hi. I'm running Vortexbox on a DIY PC with an AMD Athlon processor and
1Gb RAM, so it's a Fedora 20 kernel and LMS 7.8. My library is about
1.4Tb on a 2Tb drive but that's probably not really pertinent to my
question. It's not that I think anything is necessarily slow, it's just
that I have the ability to replace the MB with a significantly better
one. VB will utilize the additional memory and processor speed, but I
was just wondering if there is any advantage to LMS. How much
transcoding does it do? My library is mostly FLAC and ALAC.

Yea, I tried that, connecting the SB3 to the router using Ethernet, but
it still refuses to stay connected to the LMS. Sigh. Oh well, I bought

Yes, the Sonos Connect (Zoneplayer90) has digital outputs. But wouldn't

Parts ordered, thank you for this information!

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-22 Thread dyohn

OK, I just followed the excellent step-by-step directions from the
Vortexbox.org site and got the VAMP up and running in about 20 minutes.
I am about the least Linux-knowledgeable person in the world so if I can
do it, anyone can. I'm using a Turtle Beach USB DAC for now and it
sounds pretty great for a total investment of around $50. I'm
controlling it using the free Logitech Squeezebox iPhone app. Next up
is to download iPeng and to order an AudioQuest Dragonfly USB DAC to see
if it sounds better than the Turtle Beach. So, as long as you are
willing to control from a smartphone app or via the web, this works
great and will replace one of my Squeezeboxes that suddenly died. A
recommended project and thank you Vortexbox folks for doing this.

Well, this solution worked for me. USB DAC and control via iPad and I'm
rocking.

If it's for fun, go ahead and recreate the wheel. But I say once more,
the VAMP with a good USB DAC does exactly what this thread seems to
want, with the exception of IR control (but why you'd even want that
since it is IP controlled, I don't know) and does it for a lot less
money than is being talked about.

That's what I've been afraid of since the first time I heard of this
project. As a former Olive Opus 4 owner, I can tell you they LOVE their
proprietary formats and they want to create and Apple-like closed
infrastructure. Plus as least with my Opus, the hardware was a LONG way
from reliable...

Use a good quality USB DAC and you have it. :)

Exactly. That project is interesting but it really is recreating the
wheel and at a much higher projected cost.

And there you go. :)

I've been using the VAMP built on a Ponoplug for a couple months now and
love it.

I control my VAMP from either my iPad or my PC. I have no need for a
local display and I hadn't used the one on my now dead Squeezebox for a
