Thanks all. I may pick up one of the small amps you guys noted and test. [slim] new amp suggestions
Hi folks. I have a squeezebox classic that was connected to my yamaha mini stereo system. The amp went and I am now looking for a replacement. I only used the input from the squeezebox and not anything else so I do not require anything other than inputs for the squeezebox. I would like to keep the yamaha bookshelf speakers as they are fantastic. 30W drivers. Any suggestions? Something with a small footprint would be great and I do not really care about power consumption. Re: [slim] Samsung enters the fray...
Sonos for the S series speakers are near the same prices so no difference here really. I am happy that some others are getting involved in this market place. In end it is us the consumers that will benefit (hopefully). With Samsung involved with their system now and others working toward a platform, it does show that there is interest still in multiroom wireless systems. For me even to consider this samsung tech it would need to support FLAC and have a device that will allow me to use my in place stereo for part of my system. I was quite encouraged with the Jongo system as it has the wirless speakers, portable devices (battery supported), radios and connections to existing stereo systems. But once I got to the details I found out that they have no FLAC support and there is no pairing of speakers for stereo sound. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=6 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

My rule of thumb is Rip everything to FLAC first. That way if needed these flac files can be converted to MP3 using a batch process. Just noticed that Pure music just released Jongo A2 their music streamer for 99.00 pounds. It supports wifi for multiroom and sync and bluetooth for those who just want to do simple streaming. Unfortunatly there is little technical spec type documents available at this time in regarsd to the multiroom streaming. Re: [slim] SB - new found love
As much as I enjoy my SB system I doubt that I would look to a community funded SB should I have to look to replace my system. Perhaps if a new company came to life and ran with this I may take a look. The challenge I see is that the SB system which I do enjoy requires some tinkering from time to time. To say it is more technical then some of the other industry offerings would be correct. Yes you may get some more features because the system is more open but I know my wife could not resolve all issues should they arise. Thus I could not see a community funded SB system solving this issue and in fact I see it possibly becoming more technical. With all that said, I will keep my SB system until I can no longer keep it going which I do not see happening for years to come. I have all somewhat new hardware with the Slim Devices Classics being my oldest technogies in my SB system. Re: [slim] Olive One - any downsides?
I have been following the olive story and it does look promising and it looks like the crowd funding is paying off as they well moved passed their initial target and could end up with over 1M once it is completed. Given my squeezeboxes are still all functioning well, I am in no hurry to replace them today. In reviewing the olive one I see it would do everything I want and remove the need for a server. That I would like plus a nice large interface on the device which would be great for the wife and the support for internal amps. So I can see some upside over my multi room squeeze box deployment today. The problem I see is with costs. I had done up a cost schedule to see what it would be like if I had to replace my squeeze box setup with a sonos solution. It was to say the least not a pleasent experiance. From what I see with the oliveone it will not be that great as well. I have receivers, booms and classics. At approx 400.00+ per it would be thousands to replace my current setup. I can see why people are snapping up spare Squeezeboxes. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97599 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
Although I believe there is lots of talent here on the boards that could be invested in a project like this, I think the reality is that there is a difference between community build of a product versus the Olive approach of a crowd funded product. With that you need a company that will do everything from hiring the right people to do the design and build out of the product and as well as initiate all the necessary marketing and sales plans and objectives. I for one am monitoring the Olive One product and project carefully. I see it as a potential replacement down the road for my squeeze environment. It will all come down to the execution and delivery to market. Sure there are some things I see that I would like different with Olive One. The biggest is a headless product. I for one cant see wanting to have a big circle device in every room. The touch was more the footprint that I liked and even that just a receiver is all I wanted in some rooms. But I like that larger display for the wife factor. Even though I have spent hours with my wife using Ipeng she still get's it mixed up from time to time. What I end up doing is syncing a few devices in the house to a boom I have and then doing presets on the buttons for the 4 or 5 music sources she likes. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97881 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Now the devil is in the details but if they deliver on what they are saying it could be a pretty good solution. One issue I have is with the footprint of this thing. I have a few booms. I would think as much as I love the squeeze products, you should not consider using them for a new installation where the installation cannot be easily changed due to the fact that the good squeeze stuff has been discountinued and there is no information on replacement technology. So I would consider doing things like wiring in a closet of squeeze devices like SB3 or Touches to amps and then speaker wire to the rooms something that would be safe and easier to replace / reconfigure using different technology if you had to switch out of the squeeze platform. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97106 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Well to each his / her own to say the least. I for one will not move to anything if it does not support a good base for syncs. In my house we use syncronization lots and a phone with music player is not going to get me there without some other technology supporting it. I have 5 rooms in my house with slim / logi products and control them with iPeng and browser clients. Not long ago my child came to me and asked if she could have a boom for her bedroom or something else tied into our music system. She had amplified speakers that she plugged into her cell phone which for a time she thought was the best. I did a bit of relocation of items and gave her one of my booms which she loves but agreed that when she upgrades her phone to a iPhone I will get her iPeng with playback and she can then go back to her amped speakers. This way she gets the best for her which is her own libary of music to take with her and access to over 16,000+ tracks in our music library. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Line Comes to an End (quasi official confirmation)
This is not what I was expecting when I heard plans were being made for more audio products. I had thought that this would be advancements in the product line and not step back. After reading most posts in the forums and doing a web review of the new product pitch I believe Logitec is really focusing on the mass market of people who just want simplistic playback capabilities from their mobile devices and to provide some music services. Many of the consumers of these products can care less about syncing, hi def music and using a home audio (stereo) to listen to their music. I will continue to use my squeezes as they are, I dont use mysqueezebox anyway and music services available for use in Canada are almost non existant due to the laws in Canada. I rely on my own large selection of music and internet radio. I have various copies of LMS archived and will insure I keep saving any later updates to LMS so that once it is done being supported and updated I will have many years before I have to consider any music system changes. That is provided my squeeze HW holds up. I will look to pick up spares as they become available if the price is reasonable. So for me, it is not good news to hear that this is being done but my squeeze installation should be around for many many years. And by then things should have changed in the tech world and it may be time to change. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Logitech Airplay Speaker
I like the idea of a simplistic interface for those who just need the basics and the advanced with all the features. When I made the venture into the Squeeze line of products ease of use for the whole family was something I did not consider. This caused a decline in the adoption of the system. My wife loves the system when it works. And when I say works, when she can play her music and sync players when required. You know they make cell phones with big buttons and the likes to make them easy to use for seniors as many only want to receive calls and make calls. My father in law has one of these and he loves it. He could make (to him) his complicated Nokia phone work before. Re: [slim] Logitech Airplay Speaker
The biggest issue I have with the squeeze line is ease of use for techo neofites. My system is sold, little to no issues all rooms using wireless with a wireless infrastructure that has N based devices and extenders. Even my microwave no longer causes disruptions in the kitchen setup. The problem comes when the wife wants to use the system beyond presets I have put on a boom in the kitchen for her or the favorites I have created. We use iPeng on ipod and iphones to control the system. So to me the interface is good and easy to use. She still has troubles, the kids not so much but they do say things are much easier to do when playing music from their ithing docked in a base. In fact, often if they are in a room with a boom, instead of just using ipeng to play what they want, they will connect their ithing to the external input into the boom and play right from their ithing. I hate that as for the most part we keep everything on the server and then when they want to update their ithing they have a way to easily add the music to their ithing from the server. For the wife if I know she is doing something and will want certain rooms synced, I predo that for her and then ask her what she will want to play for music so I can easily put the sources there for her such as streaming from Sirius XM or playlists from our large library. So I end up being the DJ so to speak just so she does not get frustrated, go to the basement and unboxes thousands of CD's and go old school. In some ways I believe we need a very simple interface offering basic features to make this easy on the people who are not technical. For example, a sync interface where is actually tells you what to do on the infterface to sync devices in very easy terms and steps. iPeng is close but not close enough so my wife can easily figure it out. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93207 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] My story of picking betamax...
With the changes at Logitec and some interesting developments I too am questioning my decision to own Squeeze Box technology over Sonos. First I am a happy user of the technology, have been for a while now. However I have been troubled by wifi network issues recently and while I can manage them if I am around, the wife and children cannot. My wifi is becoming saturated with many laptops, computers, "i" devices and squeeze boxes. I found that the past few weeks I was having music stop playing intermittantly. I traced it down to the fact that a quest had started using her iphone on my wifi. This was enough to put it over the edge. She left for home and the issues went away. Just yesterday I had the issue occur again. I found one of my children had a friend over and they connected their itouch to the wifi. I had them disable it and the problem went away. In my case my music is from my library on my squeeze box server so I do not need internet or wifi for it if I had Sonos. I would not run cable drops to solve the problem. I do not like propritary things like a Sonos mesh network but I think in my case the advantage of it might be better than intermittant issues. Not to say there is no issues on a sonos network, I just think they may be less in regards to the issue I am having. Even with the issues I will tough it out for a bit as I hate to give up and as well spend more money. Even selling all my squeeze boxes would require me to dig into my pockets for more money to replace eveything I own with Sonos and I would miss my booms. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89411 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Sonos3 features of SS 7.6
Hello, I was just reviewing some marketing material about the new Sonos "Play" 3. It appears to have a similiar capability to the Stereo settings of Squeeze Server 7.6 where you can use two wireless devices for a Left and Right Stereo channel. What I found interesting was the price. They have listed 299 for a device and then for 59.00 you can add the wirless network. To me this looks like Sonos is trying to enter somewhat into the market where logitech has been for a while. Now without new boom boxes available from logitech, this may leave an opening for Sonos to sell some product. I know that I might have looked at Sonos a while back if they had something like this S3 back then as an alternative to the boom. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89047 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Now if they could guarantee that would happen in my house, I would be clicking away on the shopping cart like a mad man. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68531 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You can use your Touch just like you use your SB3 and have a server running. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67040 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Best of Luck - moving on...
Thanks Dmager for your update. One think I have noticed is that many Sonos fans have really jumped on the Duet Controller as a major issue. I do agree it is not one of the best products in the line from a stability point of view but it will probably get better. But in doing some research, I see that Sonos users have been complaining about lots of issues with Sono's new touch controller and as well a new software update. So sorry to see you move on and wish you good listening. For me I will keep my Slim products and add more. I am really contemplating jumping on the Touch and using tinysc to run things for now. I already have a USB drive and the only thing I would miss would be the Weather Plugin I use on my Boom. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67040 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] New "Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch" spotted !!
This probably will look nice sitting on a table or counter somewhere, but it will only be as good as the back end and infrastructure supporting it. Hopefully for as much as what is going into the user interface of these devices, one would hope the same goes into the other pieces. I believe the new device will have the ability to attract some new customers, but the bigger bang for the buck for me would be to introduce something that would allow users to more easily setup and configure their system. On top of that, it would go along way if a "device" could be provided that would allow the customer to implement the system without having to source their own server for Squeeze Center. Some little device that runs Squeeze Center and allows you to expand storage when needed. In other words more turn key. What about a server with it's own Wifi router and software to allow easy configuring of squeeze devices with it. Again, aimed at the less technical customer providing more of a turn key solution. For others, they might go the build it themselves approach. Why not offer options like mains / power network adapters branded as Logitec bundeled as part of the package. Beter yet, could also have these part of the product just plug in and away you go. The only issue you have then is the controller but at least that can definatly minimze potential issues. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64706 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Best of Luck - moving on...
As I stated before, I have a very stable system but with that said, I too believe that many would not be able to install and configure the system unless they had some technical know how. Perhaps as wireless technology matures even further many issues will be resolved. Sonos has their own Mesh Network so other than the occasional interference with things like cordless phones it is pretty good and is dedicated for the use with their equipment. The Slim / Logitech uses good old wifi which in most cases is probably used by other devices in the house such as a laptop or iThingy. So my install is stable, the wife and children love it and have not issues using it which is fantastic. But in reality, if one wanted to really get the mass numbers of people using this system some packaging needs to be done. Here are my thoughts. - SqueezeCenter Server (HW with SW preloaded and configured) - Easy to use Ripping and Tagging pre installed - Packaged Wifi Router Option - Pre Installation check list including ways to test wifi signal strength before trying to get things to work. - Good and easy to use trouble shooting tools - Logitec to purchase iPeng, rebrand and own to insure long term support and new feature offerings. - Consider dropping Controller or doing some redesign no the HW. I am sure that there are other things but this is just from a person who is very happy with my current system. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67040 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Best of Luck - moving on...
To each his / her own. I stayed away from the Duet and have to say my system is very stable and requires little to no work at all. I have 1 boom and 2 SB Classics's and am looking to add at least 2 more SB devices in the near future. All my children and as well my wife have no issues using the technology. In fact, my children who have been on iPod crack for a while are now asking about moving their music to SqueezeCenter. Unfortunatly they have many DRM tracks but for the stuff that is not DRM we will be moving in the next month. I will be adding iPeng into the mix this fall as we have a couple touches and an iphone in the house as well. I am just going through the purchasing of a wireless extender to allow me to provide service to my shop which is a very long way from my house. Good luck with the Sonos. I do think in some ways their system may be less prone to the need to tweak, but then again, I also have heard the stories that people have had issues with the technology as well. I like the idea that I can tweak if I want and I have a little. I have the local weather showing on the boom in the kitchen and this took all of minutes to configure. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67040 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

We provide repair and replacement service. We have increased the IT budget recently to improve radio rokus up time. We occasionally fix firmware issues that effect customers. Re: [slim] NYTimes - Cisco to enter the Home Digital Entertainment Market
The player is just an expensive SqueezeBox Receiver. I looked over at the Sono's forum and there are many postings about this topic with pretty good detail about the Cisco product. There is a general concern on the Sonos forum about how this might impact thier product of choice. >From what I see, choosing a Linksys or Sonos is not much different other than a few features here and there. Even with the Cisco product in the market, if I were to choose what product I was to purchase (Linksys, Sono's, Squeeze), I would still go with my first choice, the Squeeze products. Cost was a major factor as it did not cost much to get started with the Squeeze set of products. The touch screen is a nice touch but is it worth the extra money? The competition is always good in the tech business, it just leads to more inovative ideas. I for one still would like to see Logitech/Slim come out with a receiver + amp device plus perhaps some bundled speakers. Maybe the boom with out the speakers. That way we get an amp (increase the power out) plus a way to use it if there is no remote handy. This would get me pretty excited. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57371 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I see today Apple announced that by the end of March 2009 all their songs will be available DRM free. That is a nice step in the right direction. Re: [slim] NYTimes - Cisco to enter the Home Digital Entertainment Market
I keep hearing more and more about this product. I guess we will know more very soon. But here are some of the points I have heard about. - Wireless N network - Receiver + amp available w/ color display - Receiver w/ no amp w/ color display - Device with built in receiver / amp / speakers / ipod dock / color display (boom type device) - Wireless Controller with display - Receiver w/ no amp about same cost as Squeezebox classic - Potential of integration other media media offerings from the cisco branded companies (streaming video, HD PVR etc.) No idea as to what kind of server drives this thing or anything more technical at this time. Of course, you can offer all the features in the world but if they do not work well, then what is the point. If Cisco throws bags of money at this they might end up with a decent product. Might also end up with a poor product. Time will tell. I will be watching as I am most interested in products with built in amps and good integration with other multi media sources. I like the Squeeze devices I have and have no real complaints. The price was right and the quality great. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57371 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
