Looks good (not great, but good) to me...

Let me qualify: horrible as in ugly. No issues with Logitech
introducing new products, no issues with technological advances or
amount of work invested in making it all happen.

I just look at the Squeezebox 3 which is beautiful and feels solid - to
my eyes - I look at the Transporter which is beautiful and feels solid -
to my eyes.

Then I look at the Duet, which is plasticky, cheapish and ugly (I own
all three) and unfortunately a little unreliable, the Boom which is also
quite plasticky and ugly-ish (yep I own that too if you are in doubt)
and a little unreliable, then I look at the photo of this new device and
I start seeing a trend.

Phil: has this forum become a church? Is one not allowed to speak one's
mind? People here are starting to sound like Apple fanboys.

Terminal Services for the install, and then making them use TS for the
more everyday task of installing and uninstalling plugins.

I guess you could add functionality to the Settings tab of the
console and create a separate tab for Squeezecenter.

I second these:

1) a button for starting/stopping the service
2) the ability to access the plugin infrastructure from the console
3) the ability to change ports from the console

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-27 Thread gbruzzo

Pippin,

first, thank you for your exquisite app.

Second: I have been playing with both Ipeng and Squidgy - Ipeng is more
immediate, and loads the database in the background, which gives it a
remarkable zippiness. Also, I can control both the volume and ffw
(Squidgy only allows me to change the volume, and does not give me a
feedback on the volume changing, numerical and auditory, which IPeng
does.
What Squidgy does and (to my knowledge) IPeng does not, is give me an
intuitive control of playlists (playing a song now or adding it to a
playlist for later, which I can then reorder in real time): is this a
feature that is either implemented (and I have not found out yet) or
which will be implemented in future?

I confess I also like the Squidgy template a little more, but this is a
matter of taste, so really not that crucial.

General Usability will show you how to add files to a playlist, Now
Playing how you can move around tracks in your playlist - which you
can do even better in iPeng than in Squidgy because you have access to
the whole playlist and not only to the upcoming songs.

Point taken, will do, glad to hear that.

What do you mean by template? The color scheme (I agree, that's nice

Yes, I do mean the color scheme - dialog boxes some ok, some not (I
like the play now vs album info vs add to playlist choice you get when
selecting a song)

Finally a little question: I have noticed, that the volume controls are
not always responsive (a little lag, which disappears the more you use
the cursor), as is the case with the fast-forwart/backwart slider: is
this due to the wifi connection?

Re: [slim] Deezer - Certain SC version required?

2008-12-05 Thread gbruzzo

the issue is always the same.

I would like to have a choice of artist AND album/track, and it seems
deezer does not offer that, but only a streaming feature, like Last.fm
or Pandora.

The interesting thing is, that Deezer allows one to browse and play the
library by artist, album and track if you access it from the web. Why
has this not been implemented in Squeezecenter? I really would like to
have a european version of Rhapsody - we have all been clamouring for
this for a very long time, and many have jumped the gun and moved to
the sonos platform.

Sorry, should have made my point more clearly - indeed I was implicitly
referring to the Napster service available to Sonos users. Tried to
convince a couple of friends to get a slimdevices product, they ended
up buying a Sonos. Pity, of course - we could have shared libraries

Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app

2008-10-28 Thread gbruzzo

The Sonos system interfaces with more applications/services than
Slimdevices it seems

available on both platforms:

iPhone app
Pandora (US only)
Last.fm
Rhapsody
SIRIUS Internet Radio

NOT available on Slimdevices

Napster

The lack of Napster access (or access to an equivalent service for UK
and continental Europe) is a very weak point. The world consists of not
only the US, you know - although some may think and act thus.

useful to see the large print artist/track information along with the
cool visualizer dispaly than it ever would be to look at album art. I
am also concerned that a small display with enough resolution for album
art will perform poorly when viewed from across the room. And I am
worried that a product that emulates the cheap and barely readable LCD
interface found on my cell phone would ruin the visual impact that
Squeezeboxes currently bring to a nice audio installation.

I hope Logitech doesn't take the suggestions from this forum as a
mandate to turn the Squeezebox line into some sort of LCD driven, iPod
 looking, digital lifestyle product.

Why not? Personally, I would have no issue is being given the
opportunity to handle my music collection via a larg-ish multi-touch
interface (see sooloos for an example). And I wouldn't mind to have a
little more than 7 to play with.

No worries, it is the 3rd party Hardware subforum

http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

In general, in order to play your local music, you have the following
types of configurations on your home network:

1) Squeezebox/Duet/Transporter/Boom + 1 PC running Squeezecenter and
holding all of the music OR
2) Squeezebox/Duet/Transporter/Boom + 1 PC running Squeezecenter + 1
network drive/NAS holding all of your music OR
3) Squeezebox/Duet/Transporter/Boom + Server/NAS running Squeezecenter
and holding all of your music (not fundamentally different from 1, the
difference being, that your music and squeezecenter reside on a network
server/NAS rather than your own pc).

Hope this gives you a couple of pointers. As far as UPNP is concerned -
it does not really apply, inasmuch as you must always have some machine
on the network running Squeezecenter - in this respect SlimDevices are
different from, say SONOS.

Would so very much cherish Napster support - last.fm is ok, but I do not
really care for being able to listen to a radio of similar artists
(based on what N-neighbourhood algorithm?). I would rather choose

Napster would be a massive bonus for UK-non-rhapsody-enabled listeners.

Once the controller gets assigned an IP, it will only give me the

There I could see my server, but could not select it (the choice of
music source chosen was squeezenetwork, on which I had registered the
controller via its PIN).

Am I experiencing a hardware problem or am I committing a silly
configuration mistake?

I sympathise (see the sooloos solution on www.sooloos.com) with this

(imagine a very large touch screen with ipod touch friendlyness (eg

Re: [slim] Attn: Logitech/Slim Devices - Amp Product suggeston (and POLL)

2008-01-28 Thread gbruzzo

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42805

Question: Would you buy a Slim Devices/Logitech branded amp?

- YES!
- NO!

I would like to see:
1) a pair of really good slimdevices/logitech powered speakers
(audioengine style)

2) (More controversial): a network add-on (or independent player) that
allows you to insert a CD and immediately rip/tag it to your library
(taking a leaf out of Olive's book). This might be at odds with the
slim philosophy, and will probably be gunned down, but...

In essence I would welcome any new component that might automate the
process of listening to digital music (in case of 2) streamline the
process of ripping to the HDD\album cover retrieval etc).

That is my two cents' worth...

About the loss of functionality in the Harmony 880 remote: if you check
here, you will see there is a plan to reintroduce the functionality

http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board/message?board.id=remote_softwaremessage.id=1048view=by_date_ascendingpage=5

I think Slimdevices customers (including myself) are used to having a
very direct contact with the owners/developers of the company-this
makes us feel part of the family.

Judging by some of the Logitech forums such intimacy is not really
there (I guess that might have to do with the size of their customer
base and the product offering) and is mostly mediated by moderators,
who, however polite, are in fact extremely irritating Dear so and so,
we are grateful for your suggestions and will pass them on to the
competent people Brrr shivers down my spine).

As long as the Slimdevices community will be allowed to continue
developing its plugins/NAS implementations/techiegeeky discussions
without a politically correct Big brother telling us what to say, how
to say it etc etc etc, then all will be fine (the hardware must of
course be of the quality we expect!). Failing that, I fear it will be
mass migration...

Just a couple of thoughts,

Giacomo

Squeezebox). While the hardware is first class, the software is
two-bit. It works okay, but you must be fairly computer geeky to
understand what is going on. Slim Server looks just plain ugly.

Slim Server, as it sits now, would be a call-line, tech-help mess for
Logitech. If they are smart, they will do a major interface fix on Slim
Server before they try to mass market their devices to the Best Buy
 crowd.

This will, of course, not set well with the current, geekified
enthusiasts. However, remember this. You are not Logitech's market. You
 already own one.

Let me add, that I too can be a geek. I like being a geek when I want
to be a geek. I don't like being a geek when incomplete software forces
 me to.

I do agree with you, and, as far as I am concerned the aquisition of
Slimdevices by Logitech will bear good fruit. What I find unreasonable
from a marketing point of view, is that they should kill off the
Slimdevices brand, rather than invest on it as a high quality
subdivision, nothing more.

order a new one. I would not want to be third time unlucky...

Re: [slim] Where will the Squeezebox be assembled in the future?

2007-02-23 Thread gbruzzo

the thread will not degenerate!

I have used Logitech peripherals for a long time, and some of them are
quite appealing (The latest MX revolution mouse is quite a good
product). I second what you say about the new plexiglass bluetooth
keyboard. Some of my comments were (willingly) cast with the aim of
provoking some reaction (and they did!).

It may well be that the Transporter has a future among some of the more
sophisticated products that Logitech has been developing of late (MX
revolution mouse, super keyboard etc) most of which are priced
accordingly.

I just have the feeling that a complete rebrand would not be in line
with the image of Slimdevices (at least as far as I perceive it - there
maybe margins for debate here!). Somehow I resisted buying any of the
other offerings (Roku, Sonos etc) because
a) the company is run by maniacal audiophiles with an understanding and
love of high end kit;
b) a large portion of the community consists of very helpful and
equally maniacal users, many of which possess a strong inclination
towards understanding and modifying the products (both hardware and
software);
c) the products (initially SB3 and now a Transporter as far as I am
concerned) are actually quite spectacular.

I dread an excess of product homogenisation, which may (but then
again might not!) strip this remarkable community of its quirkyness and
originality, by sinking Slimdevices into the vast sea of Logitech
products. As I said above, Fiat may own Ferrari, but Ferrari-engined
Fiats (they have existed) were never very successful...

Giacomo

that a lot will have to do not with black or white, but with degrees of
grey.

Not whether, but to what degree...Could very well be that Logitech will
leverage part of the image of Slimdevices for its own return, that is as
a further example that Logitech is going upstream and introducing very
high level products.

The issue is that Slimdevices matters to those who use it, but is per

different.

I hope we will witness a slow absorbtion a la Harmony.

Re: [slim] Italian owners?

2007-01-31 Thread gbruzzo

Bobore,

(cosi' dicono i
distributori qui, ma vai a sapere...)

My transporter died this morning. It was merrily playing along, when it
suddenly became unresponsive (a little like when the SB3 loses contact
with the network).
It went all dark, and does not respond to any input, be it via remote
or via the main panel. It nevertheless does not seem to be completely
dead:
When connected to the mains, it will emit a repeated click at regular
intervals (of about 10 seconds). When connected to the mains and the
amplifier (in my case a BOSE lifestyle system) the repeated click
manifests itself as a loudish repeated boom through the speakers. No
idea what happened, seems like it is trying to connect but cannot.

Does anyone have ideas as to what might have happened?

[slim] Re: I confess

2007-01-26 Thread gbruzzo

I should have kept my silly mouth shut. The Transporter died on me this
morning.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=174499#post174499

What is going on? I don't seem to be the only one with such a problem.
Can someone be kind enough and provide an update/explanation? It is
after all, a rather EXPENSIVE piece of kit...

Any help (possibly on the forum above) is welcome!

[slim] Re: I confess

2007-01-26 Thread gbruzzo

recoveryone:

the failure manifested itself as follows:
_the display initially froze, whilst music output ceased.
_shortly thereafter (5-10 seconds later), the display went dark.
_I shut the amplifier off, then disconnected the analog inputs from the
Transporter.
_I then proceeded to disconnect the Transporter from the mains.
_Upon reconnection of the Transporter to the mains, the display
(Slimdevices - Welcome to Transporter) would not appear. The
Transporterwi will only emit a sequence of two clicks every 10
seconds or thereabouts.
_If I reconnect the Transporter to my amplifier (Bose Lifestyle
system), the clicks are fed to the speakers as loudish booms (for
want of a better word).
_The Transporter is not recognized on the network (via DHCP), and does
not appear on the Slimserver web interface.
_Just to be sure, I reconnected my old Squeezebox 3 to the network,
which immediately finds the Slimserver and music storage. It is
recognized by Slimserver.

I suspect hardware failure. Just wondering if anyone is able to relate
those odd clicks to any experience they may have had.

kdf:

I have contacted support this morning. Please do understand, that I had
received the Transporter the evening before, and was slighly bemused by
its possible hardware failure!
Having said this, it sounds absolutely awesome.

Thanks again in advance,

Giacomo

[slim] Re: New Bufallo Media NAS

2007-01-17 Thread gbruzzo

It seems it only comes with Itunes server as standard.
It has a Marvell Media processor: Anyone familiar with it?
Hope someone takes it apart soon, so that we may see the innards and
really understand what it is made of

Gathering some further info from

http://forum.linkstationwiki.net/index.php?action=vthreadforum=15topic=1926

It looks like new Buffalo products will be based upon ARM architecture.
The Terastation live possibly on ARM11

http://www.arm.com/products/CPUs/families/ARM11Family.html

Can't get an idea of the clocks, then again I did not read the threads
in too great a detail.

Cheers,

[slim] harmony remote

2006-12-25 Thread gbruzzo

Dear All,

What is the chance of Slimdevices bundling in some customized version
of the new harmony 1000 remote (a little like The sonos remote) in the
squeezebox/transporter packages?

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,crid=2084,contentid=12498

Btw, I am a proud owner of a Nokia 770 with the beautiful Ben Klaas
skin. The 770 is fine, but is a multipurpose device (it has no hardware
buttons that are specifically designed with the management of a music
database in mind).

Are we going to see a single-purpose device in future? ( I hope again
with a Ben Klaas - designed interface!)

Thanks in advance,

Merry Xmas to you all

Giacomo

[slim] Problems running slimserver 6.3.0 on Linkstation II

2006-07-01 Thread gbruzzo

Hi all,

I have very recently tried to install slimserver 6.3.0 on the LS II
(with mipsel processor) with openlink 0.52b, Devtools and
MipselSlimServerModules installed, and have been encountering series of
issues.

1) the slimserver.pl does not start, because there seems to be a perl
module missing, that is I get

Starting SlimServer: The following modules failed to load:
Digest::SHA1

2) in another part of the forum, it was suggested to run
build-perl-modules.pl in \slimserver\Bin : the perl script runs fine
until it stops, saying

Configuring..
/usr/bin/perl Makefile.PL
Up/Downgrade complete.
Building..
Up/Downgrade complete.
make: *** [Makefile] Error 1
Can't stat blib: No such file or directory
at ./build-perl-modules.pl line 282
Couldn't find a valid dynamic library for Compress-Zlib-1.33.tar.gz -
something
is wrong. Exiting!

4) I tried a suggestion given to me, that is to set up a link as
follows

cd /usr/bin
ln -s gcc cc

and rerun the perl script.

5) still, I get the same problem. In another forum, I seem to remember
someone pointing out, that make maybe missing from my LS II.

Question: has anyone encountered this specific problem? Has anyone got
a suggestion?

I suspect the main issue may have a lot to do with my misunderstanding
of Linux...please be patient!

Thank you very much in advance,

Giacomo

[slim] Some questions on Nokia 770

2006-03-03 Thread gbruzzo

Dear All,

I am thinking about buying the nokia 770 to get over the childish
lack-of-sonos-remote-syndrome.
I currently use a linkstation to store my music/run slimserver 6.2 and
stream it via belkin wireless router to the squeezebox.
Is this setup compatible with using a nokia 770 as a remote, and if so
what steps should I undertake?

I am aware the questions are general in scope, but your help is much
appreciated.

[slim] Question about development tree

2006-01-29 Thread gbruzzo

Dear All,

I am aware that this may not be the correct forum to post this
question, but:

Can someone provide me with a (ballpark) date for the official
introduction of slimserver 6.5?

I seem to understand it will be built around MySql rather than SqlLite:
what advantages are we to expect?

I currently run slimserver 6.2.1 on a Linkstation (thank you for all
the excellent tutorials!). It works sweet, were it not for the slight
lag it seems to experience when I browse too quickly through the
library (approx 4000 songs, so not immense) or fast forward a
particular piece of music (slimserver freezes sometimes). Will this
slight sluggishness be addressed in 6.5?

Thank you all in advance,

Giacomo
