Why not buy a Wandboard and a decent USB DAC? You'll then be set up to
play up to 24 bit/192 kHz using Squeezelite and LMS.

David, I would invest in iPeng. It is a wonderful program/interface for

costs very little. I just tried it on Radio 3 to make sure that nothing

Ikabob, it is very possible that you could upgrade your machine to
Windows 7, and install your Windows XP on a VMWare player virtual
machine. VMWare Player is free and works very well. You could then run
the XP programs which will not run on Windows 7 in that virtual machine.
you will need to do it quickly as you will need to do any updates for XP
before April 8th, 2014. Once you have all updates installed onto the XP
virtual machine, run it as an independent machine - i.e. without an
internet connection.

Windows 7 runs VMWare Player very well. The laptop I'm typing this on
had Windows 7 with XP as a virtual machine. I updated it to Windows 8.1,
and now have XP and Vista as virtual machines. Vista is fine, but it is
a lot hungrier than XP: it needs about 30Gb to sit comfortably, while XP
needed about 10Gb.

Try doing a complete "Clear Library and Rescan Everything". It's worth
doing every so often when re-buffering starts occurring. After the time
when the clocks change you can often get a bit of rebuffering activity
with LMS, so do the re-scan and see if things improve.

Pono kindly save buyers the need to worry about the quality of the
head-phones they provide by allowing buyers to provide their own:

"1. What headphones do you recommend? The audio experience is excellent
with any decent headphones or earbuds from many of the well-respected
brands. We've used products ranging from $80 up with top results. At our
press demo yesterday, Ayre used Sennheiser Momentum headphones that
retail for $300. We've also gotten amazing results using Audeze
headphones, Etymotic in-ears, and many others. To those asking why we
didn't bundle headphones, it's because many already own a pair and we
wanted to offer the PonoPlayer at the best price possible. That said, we
will be providing more recommendations and offering several models for
sale when we launch our online store after the Kickstarter campaign. "

If you have an Android phone, down load Wifi Analyser. You'll see what

You would not need to connect your USB drive to your PC to transfer
files, unless you particularly wanted to. You could transfer files using
Samba...just install Samba from the Squeezeplug suite and you'll be set.
Truehl (Thomas) did a great job on that package.

Re: [slim] Bad experience with a Touch dealer

2013-05-22 Thread kesey

toby10, European legislation and consumer practice is apparently very
different to what pertains in the USA. The dealer's behaviour was in no
way reasonable or correct. The OP made an offer to the dealer: "Thank
you for your proposal to send me a Smart Radio in compensation of the
damage. I accept your offer ON CONDITION that you also send me back my
faulty Squeezebox Touch". That is a clear offer. If the dealer chose not
to accept it, then he should behave accordingly.

The fact that German and French were the languages in use here may have
something to do with the cockup. No doubt Google Translate, or whatever
means of translation was used, caused misunderstanding and confusion.
Nevertheless, the OP is due his Touch back...whether he gets it or not
is another matter.

tikavista, I'd suggest you get on to one of the German Consumer agencies
and see if they will do anything for you, by way of contacting Deltatecc
and attempting to get an equitable resolution.

reniera, you are perfectly entitled to whinge. If you enjoy it, go right

bothered to develop new or interesting technologies and devices. The

All sorted. I've checked with the only 3 Squeezebox users on the planet

Re: [slim] Pi Music Box brings Spotify to Raspberry Pi

2013-03-25 Thread kesey

The "Squeezeplug" images which Thomas Ruehl, who posts on these forums
as truehl, has already developed bootable images for the Pi, the
Sheevaplug, the Dockstar and the Goflex Net.
http://www.squeezeplug.eu/wiki/index.php/SqueezePlug

His images appear to be much more comprehensive and finished than the
current offering per
http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/25/pi-musicbox-weds-spotify-and-raspberry-pi-plays-your-favorite-t/

There are many of us who use the relevant Squeezeplug images for LMS (I
use the images for both the Sheevaplug and the Pi), and find that they
work extremely well.

Quite a number of us are happily running e.g. the Sheevaplug or the

backed-up and restored using USBit 1.61. It's a good way to go.

Surely the advantage of a micro-USB power connector is that it is a
standard? You can walk into any phone shop and pick up what you know is
the right connector. That's how it works with the Raspberry Pi. It makes
things so much simpler.

Maybe even, a lovestruck teenager 40 years ago:-) For me, if the desire
is to evoke thoughts of historical music players, then the HMV type
image is much more attractive than that of the cassette. Vinyl tends to
promote a wistful smile; the thought of cassettes brings to my mind
magnetic tape getting jammed in the player, and of a short lived

Re: [slim] the new Squeezebox products are good (because servers and linux are burnt toast)

2012-09-08 Thread kesey

http://www.newit.co.uk/forum/index.php
NewIT sell the Sheevaplug in the UK. Their forums have a lot of good
info on them, including "Sheevaplug for Beginners", within which there
are threads relating to installing LMS onto the Sheeva. There are also
threads on copying SD cards etc. etc. so that you have a backup should
an elephant fall on your Sheeva, or perhaps less likely, should your
Sheeva PSU fail or whatever.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?90931-SqueezePlug-Media-Server-4-0-(final-Release)
Thomas, nick "truehl" on these forums, has put a major and very useful
effort into automating the installation of LMS on the Sheeva.

All in all, over approx the past 3 years, I've found the Sheeva to be a
wonderful piece of kit, and a mighty server for LMS.

Live long and prosper o mighty Squeezebox and offshoots,

Re: [slim] Windows 7 64-bit SP1 LMS player not found

2011-12-20 Thread kesey

Thanks wilkes.

I've had the laptop working on wireless up until now, so I decided to
see if I could reach the Touch and Squeezebox 3 on wired connection.
The minute I connected to an ethernet cable, I picked up the Touch and
Squeezebox 3 and also the Boom.

It would appear that the problem may be to do with the wireless
adapter/wireless settings in the laptop. The adapter is a Realtek
RTL8188CE Wireless Lan 802.11n PCI-E NIC.

My router is a Linksys WRP400 802.11g. Maybe there is a conflict
between that and the Realtek RTL8188CE. If anyone knows of a possible
conflict and the best way to resolve it, please post the solution.

I'll get Googling in the meantime. All is apparently not lost:-)

[slim] Windows 7 64-bit SP1 LMS player not found

2011-12-20 Thread kesey

Getting Logitech Media Server to work under Windows 7 64-bit SP1 LMS on
a new computer seems to be a hit and miss affair. I've spent about 10
hours trying every configuration I can think of to get it running. No
joy. I've searched everywhere I can think of, and found no solution
that I can get to work.

I've tried installing VMware Player, and installing LMS 7.7.1, 7.7.2
and Squeezeboxserver 7.6.2 in a WinXP Pro virtual box, having failed to
get any of those packages working in Windows 7 64-bit.

Some forum members got things going as in this thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86162 Some apparently
didn't. In any event, the solution is not solid or dependable.

Help please!!

In addition to the above, there is a problem with LMS failing to start
on re-boot.

None of the above problems is happening with my (i) Win 7 SP1(upgraded
from Vista orig) with various "upgrades" of Squeezecentre en route or
(ii) my Win XP Pro netbook, or (iii) my Sheevaplug running Debian
Squeeze.

Well done sherington. Nice story. Its great to hear that your Pa is
listening to his music via the SB3.

When a person is willing to learn, nice things can happen.

My wife is a technophobe of the first order. She used to love her
various Nokia phones - 6310s etc because they were so easy to use. She
was very much reluctant to move to her HTC Desire even though she knew
from the kids that it would work for her. Now she's emailing, googling,
bopping photos all over the shop, using Viber, Whatsapp and loads of
handy programs.

She uses the Squeezebox Boom and has a series of favorites (ripped CDs,
radio stations etc.) that she likes. She has no interest in messing with
Squeezecentre or that sort of thing. No problem. I do. But if I didn't
she would be perfectly happy with the use she gets out of the Boom.

The Slim/Squeeze series of products is useful, and as easy or difficult
or as esoteric to use as a person chooses to make them. That to me is
what makes them great. They work. The Squeezebox Classic is a work of
art - a beautiful pretty thing that allowed music a new way out of the
box.

Absolutely incorrect. My daughter has a brain which she is happy to use
on a regular basis, installed Squeezecenter, attached a USB hard disk
with .flac files on board, told Squeezecenter where to find the .flac
files, does average day to day stuff like turning on her computer,
sticking in an Ethernet cable, ripping CDs and putting the resultant
files where she wants them. In short she is happy with her Squeezebox
Classic and gets fun out of it. Is she a dedicated computer wonk?
Certainly not. Just someone with cop on and initiative.

One of my sons behaves like his capable sister. The other could not be
bothered. For him music comes out of a tap.

Do they stick to basic use? No, why would they?

Well done all who sail in the good ship Slim/Squeezecentre/LMS.

today. I called RTE and the guy I spoke to said the Real Audio streams
were ok...he then checked the .wma and agreed they were not working. He
said he would flag it for the tech dept.

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-07-23 Thread kesey

Hi bluegaspode, congrats on getting the app out for the iPad.

It has picked up my Squeezebox Boom, but there's no sign of my
Squeezebox Touch: Squeezepad only picks up 1 player, as per the details
below.

Version: 7.6.0 - r31084 @ Wed Jul 21 02:04:34 PDT 2010
Hostname: debian
IP: 192.168.15.110
HTTP Port: 9000
OS: Debian - EN - utf8
Platform: armv5tel-linux
Perl Version: 5.10.1 - arm-linux-gnueabi-thread-multi
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.29 (sqlite 3.6.22)
Total Players Recognized: 1

How do I get Squeezepad to find my Touch? I can't find anything on your
menus to get Squeezepad to do a search.

Otherwise, Squeezepad is working fine - it is a little unexciting as
yet but I hope that over time you will develop it to make more use of
the iPad's capabilities.

The local level is precisely where I like development to be focussed.
100% of the users in my home are Squeezeboxserver users for 94.5% of the
time. We often like to listen to Internet Radio, but for the very most
part choose the stations via SBS, and find it a most satisfying
experience. I use a Sheevaplug with USB hard-disk as server when at

I would also expect that cache relates to your local music, but I think
it is worth a try just to make sure there is nothing causing niggles. I
was having trouble about a month ago with Squeezeplay speed of play, but
not now. I'm using a Squeezeplay I downloaded a week ago from 7.5 with

garym, it may be worth deleting your cache and doing a total re-scan
(Clear Library and re-scan everything) to see if this clears things up.
Strange things can get buried in that cache file. You can get the
address of your cache file in Server Settings under the Info tab.

This was happening to me in the past. It is not happening with 7.4.2
Try using the current nightly (perfectly stable on my systems XP Pro
SP3 and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit) from:

If you do not want to do this, I found that re-clicking on the link for
the radio station often got the thing playing at the right speed on the
second or third click.

pski, I got Squeezeplay working semi-properly by going to
Settings/Choose Player then selecting my Squeezebox. Once Squeezeplay
accepted this, it showed up my Music Library. I was now able to go into
Settings/Choose Player and choose Squeezeplay as my Player.

The downside is that Squeezeplay appears to be as geriatric as myself.
If I close it, it does not remember the settings on reopening, so I have
to go through the motions again (very important for a geriatric) to get
Squeezeplay player to recognise my music library.

Note: even without the above Squeezeplay can be made to work by opening
it, reloading/refreshing the Squeezebox Server home page a minute later
and selecting Squeezepplay as Player.

All in all, Squeezeplay needs to be tidied up drastically so that it
just works - going through hoops is fine for old codgers with the time
and impatience to do it. Your normal punter would just throw a hissy fit
and be put off Squeezebox software.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-08 Thread kesey

I invested in a 64 gig iPod touch last weekend, charged it up having
first installed iTunes 9 on my desktop, did a minimal bit of reading of
the iPod manual, and fired up the touch.

Next up was to download and install iPeng 1.2 and to figure out how to
use the touch and iPeng. Brilliant...there's a bit of learning for a guy
brought up on Windows (not to mind PCDOS) but once the touch interface
begins to make sense, iPeng turns out to be a treat. Well done pippin!

iPeng beats the living daylights out of the Duet, and makes the
possibility of buying the Squeezebox Touch much more likely.

Are you playing through Squeezeplay? If yes, there is a long-standing
bug on this. https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10237

This is said to be fixed (per R.Titmuss Comment 17 in August) but as an
updated Squeezeplay has not been released since June 2009, the fix does
not appear to have shown up in the wild yet

Where is your Squeezebox located?

Assuming it is adjacent to the router, then connect the Squeezebox to
your router via an ethernet cable.

If it is located in a different room to the router, then you will need
an extra HomePlug to get a connection to the router.

Re: [slim] What Anti-Virus software do you use

2009-05-17 Thread kesey

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49644

Question: Which Anti-Virus do you use

- Avast
- AVG (free 8.0)
- Avira
- CA E-Trust
- ESET (NOD32)
- Kaspersky
- F-Secure
- McAfee (any version)
- Norton (any version)
- Other or None (please post a response)

Avast 4.8 Home Edition is working really well with Windows 7 RC (7100)64
bit, and in particular with Squeezecenter 7.3.3 latest nightlies. I
tried McAfee Total Protection Service beta (maybe better known as McAfee
Total PiTA?)an it caused the usual headaches.

Initially I had McAfee TPS installed with Windows 7 RC (7100)32 bit.
For whatever reason The Win 7 32 went to sleep every so often, requiring
a reboot. Don't know if it was McAfee's fault or Win 7 32's. In any
event when I changed to Win 7 64 and to Avast, and have had no bother
since.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.3.2 on Windows 7 RC

2009-05-06 Thread kesey

Hi Mark, Win 7 certainly appears to be much more pleasant to work with
than Vista so far. It installed very easily on a clean install (separate
partition). Squeezecenter 7.3.3-26407 runs perfectly. Squeezeplay also
runs well, even though the stutter at 10 secs befre track end still
occurs (a Squeezeplay, not an operating system, problem).

My HP Photosmart 7280 printer installation routine was the only thing
that required a bit of side stepping, as HP try to kibosh installing on
anything newer than Vista. Right clicking on the Setup.exe file,
selecting properties, setting it for Vista compatibility with Vista SP1,
and checking "Run as an Administrator", followed by double clicking on
the Setup.exe got the Install routine running. It installed perfectly.

Re: Windows 7 and McAfee:
I'm using the McAfee Windows 7 beta. McAfee still do not have things
right so the hack given by Teus in the following post still appears
necessary to get a Scan to complete (to include Merge Artists, Artwork
etc).

Re: [slim] What happens if Logitech go tits up ?

2009-03-18 Thread kesey

Well, there are plenty of radio stations out there. You can access them
directly over the net.

I got my Squeezebox, Duet etc to allow me to store my CDs etc on hard
disk, so that I could access & play them back via my home network.
Squeezenetwork did not come into it.

Keep smiling, The Squeezebox does the business.

You should be installing Softsqueeze 3.7 from the Extras section on the
Squeezecenter "home" page. Try that and see if it works. Sun Java is at
version 6.12

The thing that interested me was the link with B&O...and the design of
the unit. A lot of people like the idea of a unit that is pure plug and

I think the interface of the TouchDiva as displayed in the website
requires too many touches to get to where you want. The Squeezecenter
front page, and then the Album display seems to work better.

[slim] It's music Jim, but not as we know it....

2009-02-12 Thread kesey

FYI:

Here's a system from Denmark, amplification is using B&O Ice
technology. 750 euros or so for the player and 10 euros a month for all
the music you will ever want (or so the blurb says anyway!):

http://www.touchdiva.dk/

"Release your music in a single touch

TouchDiva makes your old stereo, CDs and LPs seem like unnecessary
clutter. TouchDiva clears the stage and makes room for the only thing
that matters: THE MUSIC.
With just two screws in the wall, a broadband connection and
electricity, your TouchDiva is set to give you millions of tracks
featuring all of the music you love in just 10 minutes."

The Digital Soundsystem of Tomorrow

TouchDiva streams music from 20,000 servers around the world at a
bit-rate determined by the record companies. The majority of tracks are
streamed at 192 kbit/s, and EMI offers music at 346 kbit/s. Tracks are
streamed in WMA and MP3 formats and your TouchDiva will always give you
the best sound quality available.
A TouchDiva takes you further than the music experience you know from
computers or MP3 players. Your TouchDiva has direct access to a world
of music, and you don’t need to upload your own music. You simply play
the music directly from the Internet."

Both stations will play on the laptop via Squeezeplay. Bartok plays on
the Desktop, but Vltava won't. Bartok plays fine via my Squeezebox 3,

I don't know if it is just coincidence, but Muso will not find the

Moonbase, it looks to me like there is a Slimserver supplier business
awaiting someone who wants to be a legitimate dealer in Germany!! If
you want to do the Sony Reader as well, you might have a lovely little
niche.

As I mentioned cooltopia.com supplied me within 24 hours at a very good
price - but I had the unit delivered to my daughter's home in London.
They had no extra-national tab on their country address tab. Maybe it
could be worth a phone call? They don't take the money until the goods
are despatched.

bonze, your point is perfectly fair. The problem is that, for me and
apparently for some others on the forum who have mentioned it (bug
submitted), Squeezeplay does not work. It will only play max 7 tracks
(generally 5) of an album before ceasing to give out audio. The final
track then just keeps running, silently.

With regard to your statement that "I'd rather they spent time
concentrating on SqueezeCenter and the Controller than prettifying a
desktop music player", I would point out that some of us like to listen
to music while we use our computers. If we don't have a Slim (Logitech)
product to allow us to do that, then we are forced to use some other
product. Slim (Logitech)would lose a marketing tool via such an
exercise i.e.they would lose a major branding strategy. Punters would
lose the opportunity to strengthen their affiliation with Slim
(Logitech)by using a product (virtual) they have come to like.

is much more pleasant and interesting looking than the Squeezeplay
interface. It is certainly nice to see the artwork of an album, but
that can be seen in Squeezecenter.

I wonder what is the point of Squeezeplay. Softsqueeze has the benefit
of mirroring the Transporter/Squeezebox look and feel and can therefore
be used as an excellent means of introducing newcomers to both. I can
not see how Squeezeplay as it stands today could be used to attract any
new user to the Squeezecenter marketplace. The fact that I have not
managed to get Squeezeplay to play any one album in its entirety does
not help.

I have both the Squeezebox 3 and the Duet, and enjoy listening to music
with the use of each. The controller is handy in that it allows use of
any Squeezebox/Receiver/Transporter in the network, but I prefer the
way the Squeezebox 3 system works. Being able to pick the first letter
of an album or artist, as in the Squeezebox 3 remote, is tidier and
faster than the somewhat stuttering spinning wheel of the Controller.

Can someone please enlighten me as to where I've failed to appreciate
the benefits of Squeezeplay over Softsqueeze?

A very Happy Christmas to all,

kesey

I'd be happy to buy from a company with a good which was willing to

I'm not prepared to download from a company which charges more for FLAC

Seriously though, creating Squeezecenter as an application on Chrome

boomdijk, you need to say what operating system you are using, and also
if you are using e.g. McAfee.

McAfee messes up the scan of your music directory, so the best thing is
to turn it off while you are doing a new scan. To do this, click on
"Settings" on the bottom right hand corner of Squeezecentre and this
wil open up a new window for you, from which you should choose "Clear
and rescan everything". When the scan is complete (you can watch it
scan if you wish) in perhaps 10 mins or so, then your album art will
show up.

Jooseppi, may I suggest that you use Squeezecenter on your computer for
a while. For instance on the "Home" screen click on "Albums". Now you
have a list of albums gazing politely at you, waiting for you to make a
selection. What could be prettier, snappy or more intuitive? Now, select
a different letter from the alpha index to bring up the relevant albums.
How long did that screen take to fill? In my mind there is plenty of fun
to be had here.

I'll agree the Controller is taking a wee while to get to perfect. I've
been used to the Squeezebox 3 (wired network) for some time now, and it
reacts a bit quicker than does the Controller - but then it is pretty
fully formed as of now, not under daily evolution as is the
Controller/Reciever. There's as bit of growing in the Duet yet, but I
can wait and see how the development goes. I like what's there now - it
can be finnicky but that's computers for you. The Controller is in a
state of development, but it a fine thing as it is.

Would I prefer that it was finalised first and then sold? Absolutely
not. I've been downloading beta stuff for years. I want what is
available now. Boys and their toys etc. I'll cope with a bit of a
hiccup here and there.

What would I really like? Maybe a version of a tablet PC to run
Squeezecenter on. iPeng is probably not too far off there, but I'm not
inclined to get another iPod. The iPhone is too darn expensive to
operate where I live, and I prefer the Blackberry email facility for
the moment. A development of the iRex Iliad/Kindle/Sony PRS 505 able to
handle Squeezecenter would be cool. What do you think Slim
Devices/Logitech? :-)

Are you taking your audio signal out by analog or digital? All I can
suggest is that you move from one to the other and see (hear) if you
can get any audio.

I would also contact asap slimdevices.com support by telephone if I
were in a country where I could do that. If I were not in such a
country, I would use voipstunt (voipstunt.com) or a flavour thereof to
call slimdevices.

Re: [slim] Difference in scanning Ubuntu v Vista?

I tried all sorts of shenanigans (it's St. Patrick's weekend after all)
to get the scan to complete, including going back to Slimserver. Nothing
worked, so I reinstalled Squeezeserver (7.01-17889), went to the Cache
folder below and deleted everything in it. I then rescanned and voila,
the scan completed - including scans of Arthwork and Data Optimize.
Artwork is now happily showing.
Cache Folder: C:\ProgramData\SqueezeCenter\Cache

Re: Vista. I have Ultimate 32 installed and must say that I've never
had any trouble with it. I note that the Scan problems have been
happening with XP Pro SP2 also. I've deleted the Cache there and
re-scanned, but the full scan is not yet competing - so no artwork
shows yet on that laptop.
