As mentioned already, the software runs in the background, does incremental backups, its throttled. The original backup took about 3 months, 24/7, as I throttled the uplink to 500KB, but it was eventually done. Incremental backups, especially for flac (I do not backup movies) do not require much time, I'm throttling at 250KB 24/7 - this is far from fibre but gets the job done and it does not affect my web usage experience. CrashPlan desktop app provides a control on the uplink speed. I'm also with an ISP provider where upload does not count against your bandwidth. If you are in US, you can mail a harddrive for an initial, seed backup, there are restrictions for mailing hard drives across borders so I did not bother. I had to recover a small portion of my files once and it was very easy, painless experience. I'm on linux and there were some changes to be made to config files to allow more than 2TB of backup data but there was enough support from CrashPlan to do so. Overall I'm quite happy with this solution, I have reduced much of the backup clutter that I had after moving to a smaller place. And unless CrashPlan crashes, I don't have to worry about hard drive crashes :-) George Transporter->Pathos Logos->Triangle Celius Touch->Yamaha RX-V673 -> Paradigm Monitor 7 2 Duets, 1 Boom RIP, 1 SB3, 1 Touch, 1 Radio, Transporter OnePlus3 -> Sennheiser HD 380 Pro 2 servers -> Ubuntu Linux, NUC and Synology 1 Bay matka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107345 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I've disconinued TIDAL not only because it's classical catalog is not that great, but becasue it is a Spotify clone where the SONG rules and composer is an ARTIST. Re: [slim] Need recommendations for music subscriber service
I'm using qobuz.com for few years now, mostly because of 2 factors: they stream in flac and classical catalog is strong. Using your criteria: Works with my SB3s, Duet and Touch Duet, Touch and Transporter, should work with SB3 in flac or mp3 but I have not tried it (can't find my SB3...) Must be able to sync on multiple devices qobuz allows multiple connections but I have not tried syncing Needs to have a large library, mostly mainstream pop, country, classic rock, etc., although for me I like to stray from the hits. Check the catalog, seems sufficient to me, I also found indie catalog quite good. ]Must sound good on my mid-fi system...I don't need lossless, but I don't want 128k, either. You can choose mp3 at 320kbps or flac, mp3 is cheaper, both sound great Needs to still be able to do all of this a year from now. This one is tricky, I'm with qobuz since plugin has appeared (couple of years ?) and they seem to be expanding to other countries than France, but I have no idea what is their financial position or market share, not knowing that, I pay monthly instead of yearly. If you can not set up streaming account via web because your country is not supported, send them an email and they will set your account with France attribute. You can try the service for 1 month free. Good luck. I updated the laptop BIOS and found one setting for USB 3 that could be varied (I cannot remember what it was, and I don't want to reboot the laptop to find out what that setting was because it's a shoutcast server also). Any ideas as to what would be a more efficient system for storage and backup (and possibly the server)??? I've thought about getting a custom-built server computer with at least 10-15 TB of internal storage and backup via a USB 3.0 external hard dock. The hard drives would be of the slower energy efficient variety and I would specify an energy efficient processor. I'm not crazy about a NAS because of the vagaries of running LMS on a nonstandard OS and a very low-power processor. Let me know your thoughts. Happy Holidaze. I have 6TB but not all is taken as I prune video rather quickly, however my setup might be of interest to you. I've got Mediasonic Raid box that can take up to 4 drives, I know they have enclosures that can take up to 8. In a common raid 5 configuration with 3TB drives that will give you potentially 20TB give or take. This enclosures have their own raid controller and connect to a PC either via usb3 or eSata. I have my 6TB connected to a simple Acer nettop which serves it to the network as a NFS storage via gigabyte (it could be served via Samba for Windows). You do not need a lot of power to run network storage. My slim server runs on another server (with more horse power) so scans and directory browsing is snappy. Acer nettop runs linux. Mediasonic Raid enclosure that I have does not provide great write speeds after a while when data is fragmented among the drives, but after initial backup, rsync should (or the other canned programs that do the same) relatively quickly sync your backup and main storage as it only goes after the differences and not a mirror backup. You could use Mediasonic as your backup device, I'm using it as a main storage server and have rsync backups to docked drives via usb2. Would like to purchase another Mediasonic just for the backups but I'm trying to economize. Re: [slim] Paid streaming service recommendations
Qobuz.com fits most of your requirements: 1. Very agnostic: Needs to work on: SB3, SB Boom, SB touch, iPad, Android phone, plus Mac and PC desktops I have run the service on SB Boom, Touch, Android, Windows Desktop. I'm pretty sure there is a client for Mac and iPad/iPhone 2. Supports off line dowloading I have used offline downloading on Android and Desktop. When downloading flac on desktop (you can stream flac on SB and Desktop), downloaded files are encrypted. Did not check mp3 on Android. 3. (Not sure if any service does this) supports offline downloading AND moving the mp3s to other devices (i.e. ipod classic) I'm not aware of such integration. Also, downloaded desktop flac are of no use outside of desktop app, again, I'm not sure of mp3 on portable devices. 4. Has the ability to support 2 users on at the same time. Supports multiple users. You can sign up for a free month and try it out, there are 3 plans to choose mp3 all flac classical only flac all It also depends what kind of music you are after, please check the offered cataloque. matka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98798 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Personally I have only experienced this with HDTracks, but I am not sure Quobuz is any better. After similar experiences with HDTracks, I have given up on buying hi-rez, plus I don't think that I can hear the difference anyway. My warm endorsement of qobuz comes with a little bit of waring and I should have done it earlier. Once you download, check the spectrum. On couple of occasions I've got transcodes from mp3, once on a brand new recording (Brentano Quartet Beethoven Qt). I have contacted qobuz, they admitted that there is a problem and replaced with a recording of my choosing in Masters. And although I understand the off-premise argument, I'm not interested in taking it that far. If my house burns down, I'll have bigger problems to worry about. As others pointed out HD will fail sooner or later, most likely the RAID controller will eventually fail also. I listen to lots of music, and a emusic subscription seems cheaper than buying albums from Amazon, Google music or Itunes. The only drawback is that it doesn't seem to have much classical music. But no one seems to be talking about emusic anymore, or about buying music online for that matter. Last posts I can find here in the forum are from 2007. Emusic seems to get a lot of bad rep nowadays, with that merger with the ebook company and so on. Got the the feeling it will not stick around for much longer. If you could add an eSata controler (or maybe somehow hookup esata cable to existing controler ?), then you can add an external array box like this http://tiny.cc/r4dbuw. Not only that but they appear, from time to time, to have extremely cheap multi-disc set downloads - my interest in in classical and there have recently been Peter Hurford's Complete Bach Organ Works (17CDs) and Aeolian Quartet's complete Haydn String Quartets (22CDs), both for 7 Euros. (Sadly I registered too late to take advantage of those offers.) I've been using qobuz for more than a year, when browsing I use Chrome Web Browser, it translates the whole page on the fly if you wish. Unfortunately, this does not work with the annoying, jumping graphics that they use often (Flash ?). As far as prices are concerned, my first stop for download is Presto (your backyard I believe), however Presto selection of downloads is not as impressive as qobuz. One word of warning for major labels that belong to Universal Group. I have found on few downloads from Harmonia Mundi that the flac files are altered by watermarking. If you open a flac file in an audio spectrum viewer (for example Audigy), you would see a thick bar of frequencies at around 19.5 kHz. I could not hear the inserted frequencies, also did not have CD's to compare, but they are clearly manipulating the files. The suspicion is not on qobuz manipulating the files but rather on Universal when selling to resellers. Particular download I'm referring to is Schubert Quintet with Arcanto Quartet. http://tinyurl.com/c5fuhjj Flac dowlnoads are advertised as an exact copy of CD, so for me this has disqualified UG flac downloads and the resellers.
