Re: [slim] Mip: R.i.p?

2014-02-01 Thread mikerob

Does anyone know how to fool the Mac version of MusicIP into doing local
analysis?

Under Options Server I've unticked the Connect to server box but
when I select Start Analysis MusicIP comes up with a dialogue box
saying OK to sync? I need to synchronise with the MusicIP server with
Yes and No options. If I select Yes, I get Unable to establish
connection and No doesn't do anything.

I've put music.predixis.com localhost in the Mac /private/etc/hosts file
but this didn't seem to do anything.

I've been using an iPhone/iPad app called Roomie Remote
(www.roomieremote.com) to control my AV kit and this works with an
adaptor from www.globalcache.com for devices that still use IR. I think
Roomi is great - really easy to set-up and use.

I think the future of dedicated remotes like Harmony is quite limited.

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2013-06-10 Thread mikerob

I've been using UDAP to set-up a Receiver and everything seemed to be
working ok, however I've noticed that if I stop and start LMS, LMS
doesn't recognise the Receiver until I switch the Receiver off and on
again.

The LMS interface says Your player was not found. If I switch the
Receiver off and on again, it is recognised immediately by LMS.

Receiver is set up wired with DHCP and the router (Air Port Express) is
set-up to reserve a specific IP address for the Receiver.

Any ideas why LMS isn't recognising the player after LMS restarts?

You can use Nicecast (http://rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/) to select an

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

I'm not keen on archiving the MusicIP fingerprint data to tags on
tracks.

I tried it about a year ago and found that it stopped AAC and ALAC
tracks playing on an iPod shuffle. The way that MusicIP added the tags
changed the order of track atoms that the shuffle was expecting. It
took me a long time to clean this up so I'd rather not take the risk
again.

In Korea, Japan and some European countries, a high proportion of

I'm not sure what the max bandwidth is but I've been streaming Apple

Yeah - the WAV pricing is crazy isn't it? For an album, the Beatport

It is made even worse by the exchange conversions used for GBP and EUR

There are a lot of complaints about this on the Beatport forum so

However Slimserver won't play tracks with artwork ripped from the other

I'll raise a bug report later today and include a copy of a track with

I've also come across a problem where a CD ripped to Apple Lossless by

System is Slimserver 6.3.1, iTunes 7, Quicktime 7.1.3 on Mac Mini G4
OSX 10.4.7.

On first investigation it appeared to be related to adding cover art
using iTunes.

The tracks ripped by iTunes without cover art played ok on Slimserver.

However when I added cover art using iTunes (manually, not using the
new iTunes cover art feature) and did a clear and rescan, the tracks
appeared on Slimserver but the cover art wasn't displayed and the
tracks wouldn't play.

Tracks without cover art with a cover.jpg file in the same directory
displayed cover art and would play.

Beatport does indeed have an excellent selection of electronic music
but they have totally stupid pricing for WAV files and non-US dollar

For example, a particular CD is GBP 7.78 new on Amazon Marketplace
including post and packing from the US to the UK.

Buying the same tracks as WAVs on Beatport would cost GBP 24.97.

Needless to say, I've stopped using Beatport.

the trick) as I've just about given up trying to get decent 11g

However there's a shortage of power outlets near the ADSL router
(ground floor) so the powerline device may have to go in an extension
socket assuming it will fit - how big are these devices, larger than a
 standard UK plug?

I'm using a pair of Devolo MicroLink dLAN adapters for a point-to-point
link to a Squeezebox in the kitchen where wireless reception isn't great
and cuts out when the microwave is on.

Both of the adapters are on 4-way extension leads. I've had absolutely
no problems with them and I'm streaming FLAC.

I'm sure having the adapters on extension leads isn't optimal but it
works fine for me.

The adapters are bigger than the typical plug so I needed to juggle

Fair point... however I think in the Sonos system with just one Zone

In my particular setup with a computer and wireless router in one room

I don't think Slimserver is misinterpreting MusicMagic's data -
MusicMagic just provides a list of file paths. SlimServer still needs

the interpretation of the tags.

would it take to do a rescan for, say, 10k MP3 tracks?

(On this point... a question for Slim... with the 6.5 split scanner
release, would it be possible to divide these tasks between processors?
That is, using an ordinary PC to do rescans creating the database file
when needed, but the NAS for everyday music playing)

- support of Apple Lossless?

- plans for support of Alien BBC?

- possibility to support Music IP Mixer from predixis.com? (and if the
NAS can't run Music IP, does anyone know if it is possible to query a
different computer that is running Music IP?)

[slim] Re: Squeezebox and Infrant ReadyNAS NV

2006-06-07 Thread mikerob

Infrant Wrote:
 Mikerob,

The re-scan performance is definitely slower, but if your music
collection doesn't change a lot then the biggest hit will be the first
time you set things up. For 10K tracks, we estimate it will take 2-3
hours (this is assuming pretty detailed ID3 tags). We are looking into
ways to modify the re-scan procedure so that it only scans what has been
changed; thereby significantly reducing the re-scan time when you
add/delete music from your collection moving forward. Right now, I
don't know when this will be implemented.

We should support Apple Lossless today, please let me know if you have
 found otherwise?

Alien BBC is on the To Do List, but I don't have an ETA at this
 time.

Hadn't heard of Music IP Mixer, but I will have someone look into it.

Thanks for that... I don't have an Infrant NAS at the moment but was
thinking about one purely for storage so was interested about
Slimserver support.

On music scanning, I don't tend to find the Look for new and changed
music option on Slimserver very reliable so I usually do a Clear and
re-scan every time I add new music which is just about every week, and
it takes 20-30 minutes for about 10k tracks using my Mac Mini. This is
one of the more annoying things I find about Slimserver...

I'd be interested if it was possible to do the re-scanning on a
separate machine to generate the database file for those who may find
2-3 hours too painful...

I've no experience with the Infrant products so didn't know if Apple
Lossless was supported or not.

Music IP Mixer (previously called Music Magic Mixer) seems to be pretty
popular among the Slim community and I'd recommend you take a look at it
to understand what it does. I use it all the time as with a large-ish
collection, there is loads of music that I have forgotten about or
haven't really listened to and Music IP is a great way of automatically
generating playlists to reveal music that I may have passed over.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Music IP analysis function is far
too heavy duty for a NAS but similar to the re-scan question, maybe
there is a way of using a Music IP database file that has been
generated using another PC.

[slim] BBC multicast trial

2006-05-12 Thread mikerob

fyi in the UK the BBC and ITV are doing a multicast trial where certain
BBC and ITV TV and radio stations are being streamed over the
internet.

Access is meant to be restricted only to the UK AND is available only
through certain ISPs, but Slim gurus in the UK may be interested in
looking at this to see if there could be good integration between this
trial and Slim.

TV is being streamed in Real, Windows and H264 and radio in Real and
AAC.

Details at www.bbc.co.uk/multicast

This is a trial and I know that a number of ISPs haven't got it working
properly yet...

Curious about the possibility of using a mac mini as a server to play
back through a wired squeezebox and wondered what I would need.

Basically I have about a hundred or so audio storys and about a hundred
or so music cds that I would like to back up to harddrive and use
squeezebox to play back so I can box the cds up and put them in a box
in the loft out the way. I had been contemplating using a setup using
a shuttle size case with a 300 gig hd and using squeezebox. Only
problem with that scenario is the size and noise of the shuttle box,
small though it is. This would be for a bedroom and so would have to
be as quiet as possible. Also size of the mini mac would be an
 advantage as well.

Would 80 gig be enough for say 200 or so cds? How easy would it be to
set it up? What I want is to have it as :-

Mac mini (plus usb hard drive if size isnt enough?)
connected to wired squeezebox 3, which in turn is plugged into an
m-audio 2496 dac connected to a marantz 66 KI Signature amplifer and
Mission 780 speakers. In a bedroom without any other pc present. I'd
use the existing monitor and keyboard to set everything up, then move
the mac/sb3 into another room and use it there.

Would this be doable and how much would I be looking at to set it up?
Also using macs would I be limited to Itunes to manage cds or would
there be other programs I could use (I know nothing about macs).

 Cheers...

I use a Mac Mini + external 320G LaCie drive for Slimserver and it
works great - I have 3 SBs in other rooms with 2 connected wirelessly
and 1 wired.

I used iTunes to rip my CDs to Apple Lossless.

I use a wireless router for connectivity between the Mac Mini and SBs
and the router assigns IP addresses to each device using DHCP.

If you want to connect the SB directly to the Mac Mini, I think you
will need to configure IP addresses manually - however it makes sense
for the Mac to be connected to a router with internet connectivity as
you will need this when ripping CDs - unless you want to type in all of
the CD track information manually.

I use a Mac Mini as a dedicated music server for my Squeezeboxes and
have had no issues with it (other than the usual set of bugs you get
when trying out the nightly releases...)

You don't need to do any other configuration to install and run
Slimserver.

There are a couple of Mac specific points you should be aware of.

Slimserver doesn't support yet Mac aliases but you can create symbolic
links to do the same thing using the terminal interface (see FAQ for
details)

Also, there are limited options for encoding and tagging FLAC files on
OSX. I've played around with the few applications available but I
don't think any of them yet have the functionality and usability of
iTunes.

[slim] Re: Special characters (accents, etc)

2006-01-04 Thread mikerob

I've had an accented character in a track title crash Slimserver a while
back when using 6.1 nightlies
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1709) and the points I
noticed were:

- the crash happened when playing the track on a SB1 but not a SB2
- I had ripped the track using iTunes. The offending character was an e
acute however if I manually replaced this with an e, or manually
replaced it with an e acute using the Mac keyboard, then the crash
didn't happen.
- I had other tracks with an e acute and other accented characters that
didn't crash

I know very little about this subject, but can only surmise that maybe
iTunes downloaded tag data where an e acute was encoded in a particular
form that the Mac could display OK, but a SB1 couldn't handle. That
would imply that the encoding of an e acute for that particular track
in CDDB or where ever iTunes gets its info from was different from the
encoding if you enter that character directly using the Mac keyboard.

Rather than replace the accented character with an unaccented one, you
could try to replace accented character with the same character using
whatever the keyboard command is for the accented character.

That's correct - the song started to play. The SB display size and
track title and artist length were such that the accented character
wasn't displayed on the SB initially. Then when the SB display
scrolled to show the complete track title, when it reached the accented
character, it repeated itself so the display was filled with the same
character. The track stopped playing after a time - I assume when the
SB buffer emptied after Slimserver stopped.

2005-12-16 Thread mikerob

Although I understand that non-DRM AAC isn't proprietary - it is defined
as part of the MPEG-4 standards.

That's not to say there isn't licensing issues with AAC (just as there
is with MP3 - hence LAME) - but Roku and lots of other applications
have implemented AAC. My Sony Ericsson mobile phone plays AAC tracks as
ringtones without a problem.

I'm sure it is a priority call by Slimdevices - while AAC may not be a
proprietary technology, I'm sure there are lots of other things that
are higher priority than native AAC on the Squeezebox given there
already is a workable solution based on server transcoding.

[slim] Re: Is this possible?

2005-11-20 Thread mikerob

Jim Larson Wrote:
I've finally got my SB2 working ( sounding) great now. What I'd like
to do next is to sync the music playing on the SB2 with iTunes (or
MusicMatch) running on the same PC as slimserver. Then turn on the
G-force visualization, run a cable to my big-screen Sony TV, turn down
the lights, pour up a big glass of Cabernet, and ... instant
 disco/nightclub with synchronized lighting!

 Obstacles:
 1. I've read here that it is only possible to sync the hardware SB's
or SoftSqueeze. I don't see any sync option yet with just iTunes
 playing the slimserver stream.

 2. Even if I could sync my SB2 with a software player supporting
PC-based visualizations, there is still the short buffer delay (5-10
 seconds?)

Anyone here tried something like this yet? Watching the screensaver
visualizations on the squeezebox display is still pretty cool, but
watching an in-sync g-force visualization on a big screen TV would be
 amazing.

 Jim

A very cool idea. As you say, it doesn't seem possible to synchronise
the SB or SoftSqueeze with a slimserver stream to make use of an iTunes
visualiser.

To achieve something similar, I synchronised my SB2 with SoftSqueeze,
then using Nicecast, I broadcast the SoftSqueeze audio from a URL. I
was then able to point iTunes at the URL and use the iTunes
visualisers.

I then connected my PowerBook to the TV. There is a delay of a second
or so between the audio from iTunes and audio on the SB2 but the
visualisers are so abstract that I didn't think this really matters.
(I obviously muted the audio from the PowerBook and TV when listening
to the SB2)

I think there is a PC application similar to Nicecast which allows you
to broadcast audio from a URL but I can't remember what it is called.

One problem with this method is that because I am using Nicecast to
broadcast the audio, you don't get the track information.

I think a better solution would be some sort of integration between
SoftSqueeze and a visualiser like G-Force. I see that G-Force already
supports integration with a number of players such as iTunes, Winamp,
Windows Media Player, J River, Foobar and others - I'll post a note on
the 3rd party plug-ins forum to see if anyone knows if work would be
required on G-Force, SoftSqueeze or both.

[slim] Slow searches in 6.2.1

2005-11-17 Thread mikerob

There seems to be a distinct slow down of web browser searches on my
system since going to 6.2.1.

It takes between 25-30 seconds to return a search result for a 4-5
character phrase and can take as long as 45-60 seconds.

My collection is 4500 tracks with a mixture of AAC, ALAC and MP3.

System is Mac Mini 1.42GHz 1GB RAM running OSX 10.4.3.

I don't use iTunes or many other 3rd party plug-ins (except Music Magic
Mixer but this doesn't make any difference)

Safari and Firefox both give similar search times.

I get these search times with no music playing and the Mac Activity
Monitor doesn't show anything unusual - perl ticking along at less than
5% CPU.

In Home / Server Settings / Performance I have Database Temporary File
Tuning (SQLite) set to Use RAM as temporary storage and Database
Cache Size Tuning (SQLite) set to 30.

Searching used to be a lot faster in previous releases - what times are
other people getting with 6.2.1?

What debug options would be best to collect during a search to see what
is happening?

[slim] Re: Phones that don't interfere with wireless networking

2005-11-10 Thread mikerob

Digital Cordless (DECT) phones available in the UK use a dedicated
frequency of 1900MHz therefore don't interfere with 802.11b/g wireless
networking that uses 2.4GHz.

The 2.4GHZ band is unlicensed and therefore by definition any device
can use this frequency so I suppose you could get a phone using 2.4GHz
that has been imported from the US but I can't say I've ever seen them.

[slim] Re: iTunes radio stations

2005-11-07 Thread mikerob

I successfully added a number of iTunes radio stations to Slimserver
playlists yesterday. I did this indirectly by finding out the radio
stations source from iTunes (e.g. http://www.di.fm/) then went to the
source site where in most cases you could download a .pls file with the
radio station details then copied the .pls file to Slimserver Playlist
directory to listen to the station.

[slim] Accents on Exbrowse3

2005-11-06 Thread mikerob

Exbrowse3 doesn't seem to display track/artist/album names with accents
properly (see attached screenshot)

The problem happens on both Safari and Firefox.

I'll raise a bug report, but is there any particular debug information
that would be useful?

(6.2.1 11-05 nightly Mac Mini OSX 10.4.3)

[slim] Re: Announce: Third-generation Squeezebox, SlimServer 6.2

2005-10-29 Thread mikerob

Well, I saw the SB3 at the Mac Expo show in London today and I have got
to say when you actually see it in real life, it definitely looks
better than the SB2 (in my opinion). While the SB3 design is
understated, I thought it made more of a visual impact than the SB2
which looks more and more like a clock radio every time I look at it
after having seen the SB3.

A friend and I both put in an order for a black SB3 at the show!

A temporary fix would be to edit %SLIMSERVER%/Slim/Web/Pages.pm at line
 188-190 where it says:

 $params-{'song_count'} = _lcPlural($ds-count('track',
 $find), 'SONG', 'SONGS');
 $params-{'artist_count'} = _lcPlural($ds-count('contributor',
 $find), 'ARTIST', 'ARTISTS');
 $params-{'album_count'} = _lcPlural($ds-count('album',
 $find), 'ALBUM', 'ALBUMS');

Change those three lines to read:

 $params-{'song_count'}   = 0;
 $params-{'artist_count'} = 0;
 $params-{'album_count'}  = 0;

By doing this, you lose the statistics on the start page but web access
is just as fast as before 6.2.

I tried this and the browser navigation is virtually immediate compared
to 10-15 seconds previously. A great improvement over the original 6.2.
Would be great to get this speed + the album/artist/track counts...

[slim] Re: Is it me or is the web interface getting slower on every new release?

2005-10-26 Thread mikerob

Just to echo others' comments, I've seen an massive slow-down in browser
response with 6.2.

It is taking 10-15 seconds to navigate between browser pages and the
search function is taking 30-40 seconds to return results.

I'm running OSX 10.4.2 on a 1.42 GHz Mac Mini / 1G RAM - the Mac is
only used for Slimserver - I've got 400 albums / 4400 tracks so not a
large collection compared to some.

I run Music Magic Mixer but don't use iTunes or other third party
plug-ins.

Both Safari and Firefox seem equally slow. I'm using the Default
skin.

The Mac CPU doesn't seem to be maxing out - when doing a search or
moving between browser page the perl process seems to tick away at
around 10% CPU

I ran a lot of the 6.2 nightlies and don't remember the browser
response being this slow before - in particular seach used to be really
quick.

What debug information would be useful to find out what is going on?

I see you will be at MacExpo in London this weekend - will it be
possible to buy a Squeezebox 3 at the show or is still too early for
this?

Will any of the guys from Slimservices be at the show or is it your UK
distributor?

cheers,

[slim] Re: UK Publicity: Squeezebox2 on The Gadget Show CH5

2005-10-05 Thread mikerob

Who does this sort of stuff cater for?

The Great British Public, or 6% of it, which is C5's share of UK
terrestrial broadcasts.

Older episodes of The Gadget Show are also continually rotated on,
Bravo, (I think) which is on Sky Cable so the piece on the Squeezebox
will be seen on UK TV for the next year or so.

From a Slim Devices perspective, I would have thought any publicity
(and the piece certainly wasn't negative) is good publicity.

[slim] Re: UK Publicity: Squeezebox2 on The Gadget Show CH5

2005-10-03 Thread mikerob

I thought that the Squeezebox came quite well out of the feature.

A 2 minute piece on primetime TV covering 4 different products for
streaming music is not going to provide a detailed analysis of any of
them, but from the perspective of the general public, I would think
Squeezebox had the least worst of the disadvantages given for each
product (iTrip : illegal in UK, Airport Express : need to go back to
computer to change tracks, Squeezebox : doesn't play tracks with iTunes
DRM, Sonos : v. expensive)

OK, they didn't mention that Sonos doesn't play iTunes tracks with DRM
either but I think the price quoted for Sonos (starting at GBP1400 for
3 rooms...) would be enough to put off the average viewer - particularly
when they would be more likely to earmark the family budget for the HDTV
kit shown on the first feature in the program...

The viewing figures for the show should be on www.barb.co.uk in a
couple of weeks.

Have the missing albums been filed under Various Artists?

Recent functionality in the 6.2 release means that Slimserver will do
this if the compilation tag is set - I don't know if this is also in
6.1.1.

[slim] Re: Music file question - how do you manage mixed albums?

2005-09-01 Thread mikerob

The majority of my collection are mix CDs that I also rip to individual
tracks.

I would listen to some mixes from beginning to end but despite the best
intentions of the DJ, many mixes can get a bit samey after a while and
have tracks that I would consider bad or indifferent in addition to the
good ones.

I do therefore listen to a lot of random playlists generated by Music
Magic Mixer. Yes, the transition between tracks is never seamless and
some selections are a bit weird or don't work however it is a good way
of revealing some tracks you may have passed over and it sometimes
comes up with some really, really good combinations that has me
scrambling to my computer to make sure I note them down.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox/Slim Server Mismatch

2005-08-02 Thread mikerob

Does the artist title contain accented characters?

I raised bug http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1877 for a
problem where I was getting certain artist names duplicated (+ another
issue which is different)

Tracks from the same artist were from different sources and it appears
some tags were encoded differently.

A fix has just gone in for the bug and I'll be trying it out tonight.

I had exactly the same problem and raised bug
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1709

I tried the 2005-07-07 nightly yesterday and this seems to have fixed
the problem with the exception of one particular album title which is
still garbled on SB and browser. I will investigate this further.

[slim] Re: Accented characters become garbled in SlimServer

2005-06-25 Thread mikerob

I installed the 24-Jun 6.1 nightly and it looks like the fix for this
issue is broken - tracks, artists and albums with accents in their
titles appear twice in listings. One record is garbled (accents don't
display properly) and has the mm icon next to it and the other record
is displayed correctly but doesn't have the mm icon.

This doesn't appear to be the only issue with accents which has
reoccurred.

I raised bug report 1709 yesterday
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1709) for another issue
with the latest 6.1 nightly where tracks with accents in their title
crash the Slimserver and a very similar issue was reported and fixed
back in April

I have same problem with 6.1 on OSX 10.4.

After a number of hours when my Mac isn't being used (e.g. overnight or

What debug information could I collect?
